Padang Golf Modern

Guru Bahasa Indonesia semua ……

Those who wasted (?) significant time on Sunday on the 10th hole drinking Bintang and chatting up the caddies improving their Bahasa will see from this trip down memory lane to January 2012 that slotting in golfers at the 10th hole is a time humoured trick of the PGM starter – and right from Tee Set’s very first round there as you will read.

Good to be brought back memories of Jim “Fog Horn” Noller, a man who was never more worthy of his nickname 🙂

The sharper eyed might also notice that it is a Tuesday and the following Sunday’s venue is still something of an issue. Golden days …..

Dear All,

The rainy season continues to keep the Bogor mountain courses off limits so consultation with the rain gurus are needed to select alternatives.

Last Sunday was the first time for the group to try out the Padang Golf Modern track in Tangerang but after the round all the criteria boxes for a return visit were ticked by our chief fun day appraiser, Geoff Thwaites. If there was a down side it would have to be the starter slotting in groups ahead of Tee Set as we made the turn but this is an inherent trait of most courses in Indonesia and will not be overcome unless we have a 5 star general or bold movie star playing in our group. James Noller (now known as fog horn Jim) berated the starter for his lack of golf etiquette which was good for entertainment value but had zero effect of getting rid of the two groups of VIP Asians rudely placed in front of our groups at the turn.

Estimated traffic congestion is a consideration that cannot be overlooked when choosing a course but with the Chinese New Year holiday looming the day after it was rightly adjudged that traffic would be light. For those not getting lost on the way or getting run down by a TransJakarta bus while trying to enter the toll road, only fifty minutes were required from Kemang Dalam to the course car park.

Thank god that so many courses around Jakarta are reachable within one hours on a Sunday. Twenty players registered to play and only a hand full of them had ever played the course before.

Keith Miller showed up without his clubs on the pretext of forgoing the game to instead run secretary Liza through his new sexy scoring software. Lovely piece of data manipulation and as a result proof of our weekly golf failings will be recorded and there for all to see for ever and ever. Makes life easier for me because now just have to attach the pdf of the results to the newsletter.

I’m happy to report that Liza has managed to find a decent camera so the monster putter mug shot is posted here for all to see. Robin is trying hard to kick the smoking habit but is finding it tough.

Ladies tees were pretty close to the blue tee boxes so no skirts last Sunday. Liza was most unhappy since it means less money in the bank for her end of year jaunt to Bali.

No new players this week but a bunch of returnees that included Marni and Cameron Fisher, Robin Martin, Bob Fleischmann, Peter Carver, Craig Binks, Cathy Brownell, Jeff Leaver and Stefan Merchant. The final incident to report was three freshly showered orang bule seen in the car park pushing a Panther diesel in the hope of clutch starting the beast. Certainly good entertainment value for the locals.

Still looking around for the venue for next Sunday. Watch this space or check out http://www.teesetgolf.com later in the week.

Cheers,
Ric
