The day’s fun at Matoa for the inaugural monthly medal got off to a great start courtesy of Mike Garwood who, with perhaps just a little help from his “koki”, provided us with a fine brew of hot chili beans ‘n beef that went down extremely well and, washed down with a few jugs of ice cold Bintang courtesy of President Thwaites, saw the many who participated off to a turbo charged start.
With a remarkable 45 joining in our first monthly medal, competition was fierce with honours eventually going to the wily Mustafa Baabad with 40 Stableford points; Mustafa thereby taking bragging rights until the March event, a tray of meat donated by Slaney’s Butchery and a bottle of Gentleman Jack.
Mustafa, God bless him was, immediately and very generously, to donate the bottle of Gentleman Jack back to the troops who polished it off in just one circuit of the table. If ever there was any doubt, then this was proof positive that Tee Set has thirsty troops.
The course was wet and not terribly conducive to the use of carts and it was to turn into something rather more like a motor cross scramble than anything else. In truth, however, the course played remarkably well otherwise, and this despite the rivers of rainwater on the fairways after the 4th hole for a while.
Our Pawang Hujan‘s absence in India has clearly had an effect on his concentration but, apparently, after a consultation with his Indian Naga Sadhus, he managed to restore some of his reputation as play continued in perfect conditions after a couple more holes.
The 9th green was playing a little fast for some, so Tee Set secretary Tuti decided to slow it down a bit by walking the full length of the green in her high heel shoes. They won’t need to core the green for at least a month.
A short delay occurred in working out the scores at the end of play due to cards being nearly unreadable when filled with the results of four players. So, for future Stableford events, there will be a maximum of two players on any one card!
No skirt fines on the day was a rare event and not one the Tee Set treasurer would wish to see repeated. Mel Cantarella, where were you?
No monster putter this week but nevertheless our little monkey mascot inexplicably jumped on Abe Borden’s back for having just 11 Stableford points for the round.
Joseph Peries failed to win low gross for the first time this year but that may be because we didn’t have the prize to win. Instead, he won first birdie on hole #1 played. Well done, him.
