Jagorawi and Bogor Raya, Sunday 14th April

THE DAY

Tee Setters found themselves split over two courses today, with the Interleague Team being at Jagorawi while the rest of us punters were at Bogor Raya. Rather oddly, our Pawang Hujan-in-Residence, Graham McGeady, decided to add a third venue by turning up at Gading Raya – and wondering why everyone else was so late.

Quite remarkably, the Grumpy Pirate’s driver, Tony, managed to get his boss to the Bogor Raya tee box just in time to join his allotted flight following an heroic 1 hour and 15 minutes drive from Gading to Bogor.

A driver who can do that without killing you? Priceless, though there were however to be other consequences as you will discover by reading on.

JAGORAWI

Rics

Some of Ric’s Raiders preparing for batte at Jags … and nothing stronger than a ‘teh panas’ in sight. Well done team, clearly taking it seriously this year!!

v SandbaggersAfter a solid result against the highly regarded Tin Cups last time out, the Tee Set Interleague team came out to Jagorawi hoping to match or even better that performance, this time against the Sandbaggers, though Richard Newcombe’s last minute withdrawal due to injury was the first hint that the day might not go according to plan though Santi Miller boldly stepped up to the plate to fill Richard’s large shoes.

Immendiate past President and now Interleague captain, Ric Wymer, was quietly confident in his team selections that contained in form players including last week’s low nett winners at Rancamaya. However after four and half hours of intense competition in stifling heat it was the Sandbaggers who prevailed 7 – 3, though nearly all matches went down to the last couple of holes.

With Wobbly Bob firing another handicap busting 77 gross it was always going to be tough for Mel and Graham; we guess Bob knows his way around this course pretty well after being a member for the last 20 plus years.

Neil Mullins taking the wind out of Grumpy’s sails was the highlight of the day for Tee Set, though Jesse and Ric’s stellar effort to take Souders and Dale to be all square at the end came close, and contributed a hard earned point.

With Tee Set membership growing all the time, there is more depth appearing within the ranks and it’s surely only a matter of time before that elusive Interleague trophy will be ours once again 🙂

BOGOR RAYA

Ready for usIt has been far too long since Tee Set took on Bogor Raya and in fact nobody present could even remember if  we had been there before, far less exactly when that was. In any event our return will not be too long delayed.

No matter, the course was in superb condition with only a recent green coring requiring the deduction of half a point. The clubhouse and its fantastic facilities had not been cored in the recent past, however, and took full marks; it has no peer in Indonesia whether in its palatial locker room facilities or the superb dining areas.

Turnout was rather higher than planned with the 4 flights booked proving inadequate for the 24 Tee Setters who eventually played; fortunately the registration system gave us an early indication of the issue and we were able to secure extra flights – and a mini shotgun start that ensured everyone got back into the clubhouse around about the same time.

Judging by the no shows after registering, nicely balanced by nearly as many shows without registrations, it was clear that the previous evening’s HOGFEST had not been a victimless event.

The weather was sublime to start with but clouded up as the round wore on –  with things starting to look bleak around the 16th when  a light rain started and some rather ominous thunder and lightning in the distance which was to get progressively closer as matters came to a conclusion.

One group was forced to finish on the 17th as the time between lightning and thunder got down to around about one second, the caddies had the terrified look that one occasionally witnesses on the faces of air hostesses as one goes over the Bay of Bengal – and the Starter finally sounded the siren to come off. The acting chairman generously awarded all those who didn’t play the 18th a generous double bogey for the purpose of sccoring. Heart of gold that man.

So, we had finally been let down by our Pawang Hujan, clearly he had directed his pre-play prayers, spells and meditations to faraway Gading Raya  – and with near inevitable consequences.

One Newcomer to welcome, Blair Chalmers from Scotland; a very warm Tee Set welcome Blair, just don’t bring your bloody Scottish weather with you next time!

BOGOR RAYA RESULTS

The ladies featured prominently in the prizes with Reka Romango taking low net while Cucu Chanda took 1st Sandy on the third while Jan Janda took low putts with just 29 of them on difficult greens. With Ian Byreil abssent, the 1st par by a 30 handicapper or higher was not to enrich his retirement fund for once.

Remarkable day for James Ross who set himself up for a Most Improved prize with an eye watering 63 on the front 9 – and beating it by 12 strokes on the back!

A rich haul of Skirt money at Bogor Raya, with an unusally large contingent of seen Tee Setters failing to make it past the Ladies tee during the day – enough to bring a smile to the absent at Jagorawi treasurer’s usual stern visage – we are going to have to buy more wigs to cope.

TEE SET MATCHPLAY

Just one 1st round match completed yesterday, a hard fought 2 and 1 vistory by John Suermondt over Nurin Puzey, leaving us with just 4 games left to pla; this is the full 1st round picture. Please check your own results and let Jesse Baker know of any errrors.

Matchplay

The first round will conclude on 30th April come hell or high water with the least guilty being awarded a win at that time in the eent of any unplayed matches.

As you doubtless know, the first round winners go into the Emas (Gold) Bracket while the losers go into the Kuningan (Brass) Bracket. Many first round bracket games are now ready to go and some rather interesting ones as you will see here. They are all knockout games of course; play them as soon as you like!

NEXT SUNDAY

The final leg of our three game Bogor round robin sees us in the wonderful mountain setting of Gunung Guelis.

Rancamaya, Bogor Raya and Genung Guelis on the bounce; and all at reasonable prices – we are an extraordinarily fortunate bunch.

Rp. 688,000 including shared buggy and with a start at 11:30 from two tee boxes.

Please remember to register for next week’s round as usual, as ever it really helps with the planning.

See ya next week …. Tee Set

PS The Charity Golf Season appears to be getting into full swing; here is a flyer from the Jakarta Rotary Club for an event at Cengkerang on Thursday the 25th of April.  The club does some fine work with Indonesian kids with AIDS, cleft lip, polio and cataracts and deserves support.
