Matoa Monthly Medal, Sunday 28th July

ClubhouseThe Day

Geoff putting lessonFor some, the day of the Monthly Medal was to start a little earlier than is your average Tee Setter’s preference with the putting clinic by coach Mike Shelton requiring the rather ungodly starting time of 9:30.

No worries, however, as all 10 who had signed on the dotted line were to show up – and more or less on time. Hell of a lot to cover in an hour including a whole bunch a new terms, however, we suspect that everyone picked up a solid tip or two – and Mike has promised to provide some reading material to reinforce what was covered in the day.

In a few weeks we intend having another 1 hour clinic, this one covering chipping.

With immaculate timing and, as is becoming something of a tradition, Mike Garwood then provided his excellent Chilli Beans for all so as to see off any lingering Saturday night induced languor.

Chilli Beans

Congratulations to Sam Westen for setting a new lateness record for website registration at 02:33 on the morning of the Medal – some 8 hours and 27 minutes before tee off!!

Amazingly, Sam’s record was not to stand for long as at 06:51 Mustapha sent in his own registration – and asking for car pooling!! No comment.

Reinforcements arrivingWe have been using Matoa as our Home Course for more than nine months now and it is pleasing to see that they are getting used to our ways and anticipating our needs, with this chap spotted ensuring sufficient supplies of Bintang are on hand to meet the needs of thirsty Tee Setters at the 19th hole being just the latest example.

With the President of Everything being on a UK Tour watching his homeland having its butt kicked by the Poms in a variety of sports, immediate past President Geoff Thwaites stepped into the breech to ensure that appropriately abusive words were said and prizes awarded, so many thanks to him.

The Play

Prize Awards

With 42 putts, hugely over par and losing his matchplay, Ben Kidd had a pretty rough old Sunday at Rainbow Hill last week and was the first to sign up for today’s putting clinic! Must all have been good for his soul as he stormed back to form with a 7 under par net 65 and 41 Stableford points to win the July Monthly Medal from perennial bridesmaid, Chris Murchison, and Norman Bunter, both with 40 points..

Happ Medal Winner

A fine off the stick 77 from Joseph Peries took low gross.

In a clear demonstration that the 1st hole needs a few more bunkers or something, all of Joseph, Graham McGeady and Norman Bunter birdied the thing to share 1st Birdie while Chris Murchison took a little consolation with the only sandy of the day to take 1st Sandy.

A happy Mike WebbWith only two skirts on the day, the absent Treasurer aka the President of Everything, will be delighted to see that THREE players managed to share Most Strokes with 10 – including Mike Garwood who was to shoot a remarkable 43 on the front 9 including this blemish!

While Mike Webb took one of those skirts, he was to shoot 71 net and was delighted to be on the receiving end of a 100,000 note as you will see in this photo of him sans skirt for once!

Full, player by player results, can be found here.

Next Week

We are back to the delightful mountain scenery of Gunung Geulis next week, when we have an 11:30 tee off from both boxes. With relatively light Ramadan traffic promised this should be less of a challenge than usual.

Green Fees are expected to be around 700,000 roops including shared cart which we will confirm later in the week, however, sign up now as usual at “Yes, I’m Playing!” if you intend taking the pleasure.

See yah Sunday, Tee Set
