Palm Hill, Sunday 3rd November

The Day

Something of a cavalier decision to take on Palm Hill given the recent rains, however, the gamble was to be richly rewarded with some sublime weather, hot and sunny to start with, pleasing cloud cover on the back nine providing a delightful coolness and, to cap it all, a downpour just one minute after the last group got into the clubhouse 🙂  Our Pawang Hujan in Residence, Graham ‘Grumpy’ McGeady, took full credit for this showing of course!

The starter commenced getting groups away a full one hour before the official tee off time so some late arrivals were to find found an empty clubhouse though, luckily, there were empty slots in the last groups still waiting on the tee boxes.

A good turnout as always at Palm Hill, with 39 Tee Setters attracted by its increasingly well known virtues; and a relatively smooth journey back on the Jagorawi Tol for those leaving after prize giving was something of an unexpected bonus.

We were to find a course in prime condition, certainly the best that your scribe has ever seen it and, with the 2014 programme currently being put together, we intend to ensure that Palm Hill is blessed with our presence on at least 4 occasions during next year’s play.

Lovely scenery throughout, not least from both our caddies and the clubhouse staff who must surely put Palm Hill right up there in the top 3 of Jakarta courses in these respects at least. Here is the newly scalped President of Everything fulfilling one of the more pleasant of his many duties by showing his appreciation to the restaurant staff after  the prize giving. We guess someone has to do it.

Ric thanks the girls

IMG_1331It has been a long time since we had no Newcomers to welcome to Tee Set but – nobody to welcome this week. We did however have plenty of Welcome Backs, most notably Tuti Potter, who we haven’t see for a long, long time but who is now getting back in shape ready for the Tee Set Championship she tells us! Welcome back Tuti, we missed you!!

A great day.

The Play

Prizes

Joseph Peries once again displayed a liking for the Palm Hill course with a fine 75 off the stick to take Low Gross, though was OB by the time the prizes were given out, as was Mo Maharam whose 69 took Low Net – therefore a good day also for the President of Everything with his Treasurer’s hat on.

Joint runners up in the Low Net were Dad and Daughter combo, Evaldo and Noemi Roos; welcome back Noemi!

Neil and GillesThe greens were fast and true and Nathan Belete took advantage with very low Low Putts of 25 to scoop the award while Neil Mullins and Gilles Tressens (both pictured above) shared 1st Birdie with both going one under par at their second hole as played. Neil was rather less impressive with an 11 which narrowly failed to qualify for a share of Most Strokes – Any Hole.

skirtsA goodly crop of skirts on the day with Miller, Lowndes, Wymer and Grace all qualifying for one of the 15 minutes of fame budgeted for each. We keep the club running, guys.

Tee Set Matchplay Championship 2013

Three results from a busy Matchplay day

Joseph Peries beat Mustafa via sudden death on the putting green.

Matt Fairey beat Anthony King one up.

Bob Fleischmann beat Chris Murchison 2 up.

The Tee Set handicapper ensured close results were once again the order of the day – and none closer that of Joseph who continues to play well enough to see off the opposition despite the weight of his handicap. Bob Fleischmann after being the first to exit the competition in 2012 is flying under the radar this year and knocking out players with his steady play. Will Fernando find his Waterloo when he takes on Bob next week?

Wina and Matt Fairey just need to get their match played to resolve the Bracket Emas half of the draw and reach the final on Tee Set Championship day.

The other half of the draw, Bracket Kuningan, is rather less mature with the winner of Bob Fleischmann and Fernando Gaggino matching up against Joseph Peries for the right to play the patiently waiting Alistair Livingston in the bracket playoff. If your correspondent’s arithmetic works then it is not possible to get the final played on the 24th November unless there is a midweek match somewhere in the mix; we will be in touch!!

Tee Set Championship

Your committee has been working especially hard recently getting the orgainsation into shape and all is looking good for the great day.

With all 96 places now taken, any further bookings will go straight to the waiting list. Still worth doing, however, as there will undoubtedly be the usual “attrition” as we approach the date itself.

30th Anniversary Shirts – Supplementary Order

Pleased to report that these hugely popular shirts are finally here in Jakarta – and in the hands of the people who put on the embroidering! This means that we will be giving them out next Sunday to those 12 who have ordered, so bring your money if you haven’t paid already.

The balance of 13 shirts are in a variety of sizes and will be also be available for purchase on the day at 250,000 roops a pop.

Melbourne Golf Cup

In case you weren’t listening when John Suermondt was talking after prize giving, the Cilandak Rotary Club is holding a Melbourne Cup breakfast and more on Tuesday 5th November, an Indonesian public holiday, starting at 09:00 at the Satu Lagi bar of the Kristal Hotel.

All proceeds to Indonesian Children’s charities and an excellent breakfast and champagne at just 100,000 roops; it hardly goes without saying that there will be more damage to your wallet though, with all the usual raffles and sweepstakes, so be prepared to dig deeper for good causes! Dress  code according to John is pretty frocks and hats for ladies at least, while the male of the species can “come as they bloody like”.

Likely turnout has been been variously and publicly estimated by John over the last couple of weeks to be “around 50/60” and “somewhere between 150 and 200”. Whatever it turns out to be, it is likely to be a lot of fun and heavily flavored by Tee Setters and Aussies, so not an occasion to be missed if at all possible.

Next Sunday

Those Tee Setters who have played Bumai Serpong Damai GC (BSD) speak very highly of its qualities and we are therefore delighted to confirm that Tee Set will pay it a visit for the first time ever next Sunday. At a rather stiffer than average 880,000 roops, the green fees including shared cart reflect the course’s quality , but we judged it well worthwhile to get access to this top class course.

Tee off will be at 11:30 from tee boxes 1 and 10. Particularly important to register here as we need to give BSD notice of names by Thursday at the latest – PLEASE oblige by completing now, and guaranteeing yourself a place!!

See yah soon, Tee Set
