HOG breakfast heart starters ...

breakfast heart starters all round  …

The Day

NewcomersThe Tee Set Monthly Medal at Senayan is fast becoming something of an institution, invariably drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd of Tee Setters and, with a boost from the HOGS today, saw a new all-time record attendance for a regular Tee Set Sunday event of fully seventy players.

7 Newcomers joined an extraordinary 39 Welcome Backs, some of startling vintage, and 24 Regulars on a day that
was affected, but not marred by, a couple of bouts of heavy rain early on. A warm Tee Set welcome to all of those Newcomers, we hope you enjoyed  the unique atmosphere of our group and that we will see you back again soon.

Welcome Backs

Leading the pack of those 39 being welcomed back were a bunch of 4 HOGS – with Phil Weller being the “winner” at an extraordinary 70 weeks.

Another notable Welcome Back, after a 22 weeks absence, was Chazz Hassig, newly recovered from his wrist operation.

Chazz was to tell us that while he agreed that putting all the prize money on the day into the hands of the HOGS, a Tee Set without prizes was like a horse without a cart – and promptly insisted on donating 6 bottles of the finest to the prize fund.

Well done Chazz – and welcome back!

Rain, what rain?

There were a few complaints about slowness of play and indeed it was not a quick round for some, but this should be seen in the context of the 70 players, or 18 flights, we put out there today – something which compares with our standard agreement with Senayan of just 50 players and the 60 they were eventually, and reluctantly, to agree to. And the rain stoppages didn’t help either.

Overall the club did well by us and deserves particular praise for fitting us all in.

As you will hopefully know, prize awards are contingent upon the winner being present when the prizes are being given out, a 30+ year Tee Set tradition that we are not going to change anytime soon. With one or two winners missing today, there was a bottle of Australia’s finest left over at the end and, after some vigorous bidding, this went to 34 week Welcome Back Jeff Durham for 1,250,000 roops to nicely supplement the HOGS take from the day which, from all sources, must have been around 10 million.

Well done Jeff – and well done to all for supporting the HOGS today – they all work hard for a great cause and are fully deserving of our support – and that support today, in the most meaningful terms, gave three Indonesian kids a future worth looking forward to, it is as simple as that.

Anyone who might like to more directly support the HOGS activities should get in touch with Ralph Duckworth or Ed Bender Junior. You really don’t need to own a Harley Davidson to participate (more than half of them don’t) just a willingness to give desperately needed service to the community. You would be welcomed with open arms.

Another 30+ year tradition unlikely to change real soon  is that a Tee Set handicap is required  to qualify for Low Net, Stableford and Matchplay prizes and events, and this requires a minimum of five scorecards to be registered in our handicap system, though we try to make it as easy as possible for Newcomers to achieve this by allowing cards from any course in the world to be submitted.

Finally, great to see the HOGS turning out in good numbers today to support us supporting them – come back soon y’all!

The Play

Prizes

OdiNo doubt about today’s big winner (we checked his card a much needed three times, he is an engineer after all) with an extraordinary 43 Stableford points in shooting a net 61 (sixty one), Oddvar Knardal who was later to put down his success to clean living and good beer. Well done Odi who took  the 500,000 roops V-Door voucher supplemented by a bottle of J&B Rare.

NuriWell done also to Nuri Puzi who took Low Net of 66 and the Slaney’s Meat Voucher for 500,000 and the other bottle of J&B Rare – and in the process saw off partner, and last year’s champion, Matt Fairey by 4 and 3 in the Tee Set Matchplay.

Other highlights were that rare bird the eagle, for Erik Milfors, and of course 1st Eagle  – and a Most Improved for Carolyn Taylor of 17 strokes in what must have been a quite extraordinary round of 58-41-99, a Nearest to the Pin for Bruce Hector at just 96 cm and a Longest Drive of 291 yards for Matt Fairey as some consolation for his early exit from the Matchplay.

Booby Prizes

Such a large turnout could be anticipated to see an equally large number of Skirts and we were not to be disappointed with a relatively rich haul of 10 would be cross-dressers, though the “winners” showed an amazing propensity for finding a reason not to be present when the skirts and wig were being handed out; c’mon guys, it is a badge of honour!!

RicWell done to Immediate Past President of Almost Everything, Ric Wymer, for doing the decent thing and taking Monster Putter with a relatively low 40 today while King Tirto’s 12 strokes on a hole found him in possession of Most Strokes for the week.

Fuller, player by player details here while there are a bunch more photos of the day on our photo website.

2014 Tee Set Matchplay Championship

Five results today with the stand-out being a 4 and 3 win by Anthony King over Sam Westen, and this despite the latter wining the day’s Low Gross with a 74 off the stick!

Graham McGeady conceded to George Bevege

Anthony King defeated Sam Westen 4 and 3

Frank Musgrove defeated Keith Miller 2 up

Simon Reynolds defeated Chazz Hassig 2 and 1

Nuri Puzey defeated Matt Fairey 4 and 3

The roar for Sam Westen being beaten in his matchplay was all in good humour of course and as anyone who know Sam would know, taken that way.

Sam is unbeaten for Teeset in the Interleague in 12 months of competition, a fine young fella and sets the pace for the rest of us Tee Set Hackers. The even bigger roar for past President, Ric Wymer’s  Monster Punter was, on the other hand, totally justified.

Matt’s loss ensures continued domestic harmony while Frank Musgrove’s win ensures that Keith Miller is condemned to play his wife in the next round.

Pleasing to see the progress to date in the matchplay, which in the past has had the adjective “glacial” applied to it more than any other; some credit surely to El Guapo who is guilty of “applying the whip” to good effect. We will include the current status in Thursday’s post so that you can see clearly your next opponent, get your match set up and thereby avoid Fernando’s further ire!

Next Up

A sentimental return to last year’s Monthly Medal venue next Sunday when we will have an opportunity to see if the fairways have improved over the rather poor state in which we left them.

Matoa is otherwise a most charming course and the always warm welcome from the club and staff means we have the makings of another fine Tee Set Sunday next week.

A tee time of 11:30 from 1 and 10 and green fees of 690,000 roops including shared cart, or 540,000 on foot on an eminently walkable course. Register here as usual to secure your place.

See yah Sunday!!! … Tee Set
