The Day
On one of the very hottest days of the year, Jagorawi (or Jagowari as our Aussie mates insist upon calling it – as in no wari’s mate) was not only the scene of the usual Tee Set Sunday but also the last round of the 2014 Interleague and, for once, we will give that a higher billing.
But first, news of a healthy 5 Newcomers, though we suspect that Rex and Tarik, on a business trip to this fair country will feature prominently on the Welcome Back list next time they play with us.
No matter, a warm welcome to all our Newcomers – we just hope the unforgiving Jags layout has not scared you off and that we’ll see you all playing again at some stage – we do have plenty of easier courses on the Tee Set roster!!
Welcome back to Singapore based Dave Allan who played only his second round of the year with Tee Set. though heading the list were the Zoets and the Gressers who all live rather more locally and therefore have rather less excuse!
Being a cart path course, Jags always plays on the slow side but, with a really hot day, a slow but steady pace was just fine.
Interleague
So to the Interleague, where Tee Set entered the final round of Interleague match play full of optimism and enthusiasm, however, while the team looked well-balanced and full of in-form golfers, the Cloggies 4 points lead going in to the day was always going to make overhauling them an uphill battle.
Nevertheless, the team battled to a 5 / 5 tie with a Pocksia side on a mission to redeem themselves after a 10 point gift to Mad Dogs for the dreaded no-show last month. In the end these gift points were the difference between 2nd and 3rd place with Tee Set and Mad Dogs both ending tied on 41 points and Mad Dogs nosing ahead on a count back thanks to those same gifted points 😦
Cloggies took 6 points from Sandbaggers on the day to reach 46 points and be crowned Interleague champions for 2014. Well done Cloggies.
Plenty of new players blooded for Tee Set this year so it won’t be long before the trophy is finally resting in our hands.
Worth mentioning that Jeremy Dwyer of Pocksia went par on hole #10, an ace on hole # 11 followed by a birdie on #12 which helped shut down Tee Set momentum. Three under after 3 holes, not bad for a 15 handicapper.
The Play
In the usual Tee Set stroke play we had 26 Tee Setters playing off two tee boxes in addition to our 8 Interleaguers, bringing attendance on the day to 34, a high this year for a course that seldom brings out the Tee Set in droves.
John Suermondt proved that sharing a buggy and a bottle of 18-year-old Chivas with his playing partner can do more good than harm and managed to shoot the lowest net round of the day with a 72.
Eventually the Chivas was to catch up with him however, leaving the Immediate Past President of Most Things to endure the usual macet on the homeward bound trip with only the sound of John’s snoring for company.
Low gross went to Simon Reynolds yet again, this time with a steady 81 but it wasn’t enough for him to win his Interleague match play, going down on the 18th.
With free beer flowing on the 19th tee courtesy of Jeremy Dymer’s ace, some interesting stories of the day’s play started to emerge, though Tetty being late for the tee off was not to be the biggest surprise of the days as she has become a very worthy challenger to Wina’s previously uncontested weekly Latecomer title – but Craig Ewers taking 12 stokes on a hole was rather uncharacteristic of his revamped game.
Neil Mullins had some difficult moments despite his match play win and was close to having to abandon a lob wedge that had somehow managed to take up residence well above head height in an inconsiderate tree. Clearly a case of what happens on the course staying on the course.
A relatively sparse 2 skirts this week but the lack of quantity was more than made up for by the quality and indeed enthusiasm of these two Tee Set “Sunday Cross Dressers“, Newcomer Cam Marsland and Hossam Elwakil each showing a rare talent. Thanks guys!
The lovely Brenda managed to capture some great shots of a great day while rather more detailed player by player results can be found here.
Next Up
Next Sunday see us at Matoa for the monthly medal at Matoa with an 11:45 tee time and green fees of 600,000 roops (TBC).
Matoa, as any cart rider will tell you, was designed as a walking course but, we are unhappy to relate, has now become a cart-only course and no longer part of the diminishing number of tracks in the Jakarta area offering a decent walk. A number of changes have been made to the cart paths to make getting around in a cart around a little more sensible, however, its origins continue to show.
Don’t miss your last chance to have a look at the Matoa layout prior to the Championship event in November. Valuable prizes available for most Stableford points, nearest to the pin and low putts and other stuff.
With some key players out-of-town for the Bali Classic event this could be your best chance ever to win an award, maybe even win the Monthly Medal 🙂
Sign up here for what should be another great Tee Set Sunday.
We understand there are plans for Tee Set to Challenge for a new record at Matoa. Click here to get an idea of the record they are after.
Se ya there!! ….. Tee Set
