The Day
Twenty one players showed up after twenty two were registered. Not a bad turn out with so many away for the Lebaran weekend. Most arrived early for a beer and a mie goreng before the scheduled 12PM start. A simple food menu but the sop buntut was excellent and there was plenty of cold cheap beer to wash it down with.
A few candidates for the Vasco De Garma award. Perhaps most startlingly, former President Geoff, after perhaps 40 years of going to the course, missed the turn off to Pondok Gede from the tol, the Singing President went straight towards Taman Mini instead of left at the Mall meaning a 45 minute loop for him while Brad Burness ended up at Halim 3 instead of Halim 1. Just shows the modern technology of WAZE and Google Maps is pretty useless if you don’t know where you are going – or your handphone battery goes flat.
Halim 1 is a quirky but mature course with a straight forward layout designed not to challenge those interested in shaping the ball. Tee box 1 is almost as wide as it is long and a perfect starting hole for those feeling a bit seedy after the previous night’s activities. Many compared it to the suburban or rural public courses on which they first played the game in their own countries. Very reasonable green fee of Rp466K puts Halim 1 on the to be re-visited list.
The caddies are generally aged and not of the handbag carrying sort and therefore rather less glamorous than usual, but were lots of fun and willing to provide the usual Halim free-coaching.
Welcome back to Kenny Black who has not played for so long that he does not show up in the web guy’s records. However he was sporting a 2011 Championship shirt so with some rough cals we deduced 197 weeks since last we saw Kenny play Tee Set. Just one new player to welcome from Finland, Jari Rahtu, who also took out First Sandy on the 6th. The web guy may confirm this …. he is a real gentleman on the course. Likes the occasional Bintang or two as well….
The Play

(The Web Guy confirms that Jari is the in fact the 7th Finn on our books)
Note the immense club-shaking power of Former President Geoff as he tees off on the first on the way to his birdie after hitting the green in regulation and sinking the 3 metre put. A par on the next hole showed his intentions were for a low round and this was proved with the low net B grade prize.
Supreme recovery from a nasty bout of bad beer poisoning last week…well done young fella!
Brad Burness, had an eventful round earning both the only skirt and most strokes on a hole with 12. However he was to be all square on the day taking most improved with 14 strokes. In a rare Tee Set occurence, Brad got to wear both the skirt and the wig. Come back soon, Brad!
Anlo was again in fine form, winning Low A Grade and Simon took out Low Gross with an 83, a round that promised much more after an excellent 37 front nine. Luiz shot a net par round to win Low C Grade.
Lots of ties for prizes meant that the Former Immediate Past President for Almost Everything took over the reigns at the presentation ceremony, with first birdie going to James Ross on the 5th after Simon and Geoff had won other prizes.
Small, slow but true greens meant for a rather modest putting outcomes on the day. Chris Smith was on fire on the front nine and won Low Putts with 29, again because Simon won low gross. He tied with Mike and Geoff but won on a countback. Again the 40 putt threshold was not reached so no Monster Putter this week.
Sunday’s round was the last in Jakarta for Thurmond Borden after first playing with Tee Set on the 26th August 2012 at Kedaton.
After 43 rounds with Tee Set, Thurmond is still enjoying his golf although the handicap remained just as stubborn to budge as the day he arrived.
We wish him all the best in his retirement back in the States and for that handicap to go into free fall with unlimited golfing opportunities
