Tee Set 2016 Championship, Matoa Nasional, 27th November 2016

The Day

An unusually early wake-up time for Tee Setters was offset by breakfast and dawn cocktails.  Far too many no-shows forced last minute flights re-organizations, but following the traditional group picture, with the not so traditional drone this year, almost 100 Tee Setters managed to tee off on the shotgun start.  But not even the frozen smoothies could save us from the heat, as we cannot remember a warmer start to the morning, with the sun at full heat at 8am only to give way to more humid conditions as the day went on.  We took casualties, with one early return to the clubhouse and a number of others drenching themselves with cool water and having a lie down between holes.  Of course, the casualties would increase later in the day, but for other reasons.

The Play

Chris Smith won Closest to the PIN with 1,4 m and after voting an exception to the “one prize rule” also won First Birdie for his first shot of the day on hole #12 while Kees de Korver won the Lucky Draw amongst the around 20 people who managed to land their tee shot on the hole #12 green.

Peter Bush managed to keep it in the fairway to win Longest Drive for men with 265m, while Cucu Chandra hit it 185m to win the honour for the women.

On the course Peter Nielen-Groen won ‘Nearest to the Brenda’ with 11m, but seemed very happy to get much closer to her here:

First Sandy Par went to Nick Thomas on his second hole.

First Par over 30, on his 4th hole, was awarded to president-elect Pastis Pascal.

And the biggest prize of the day, Tee Set 2016 Champion with a net 66 went to Mick Dodsworth, who seemed to have been invigorated by his trek up the Himalayas and a sneaky little practice round on Friday afternoon with the Singing President where he showed some form, their tee shots captured by our spies at Senayan here.

Following Mick, 3 were tied on net 68, but after a count back Barbora Gaislerova was declared runner-up, Divya Prakash third and John Suermondt fourth.

Complete player by player results can be found here.

As the mood seemed more joyful than normally, the booby prizes were not really considered on the day, including the Skirts that on record only King and Jari would have got, but Andrew McKelvie was awarded the Tee Set Skirt Queen title for 2016 for his high 0.6 propensity during the year.

The Elections

After the bunch of door prizes were awarded, the results of the election for the new Tee Set President were announced and as soon as Pastis Pascal was declared the winner he asked the defeated Roger Finnie to join him on the new committee as Vice-President, joining the perpetual V-P Ric.

After a short speech from the new President, who first shocked the audience by jokingly saying French would now be the official language of Tee Set, and then more seriously thanked the hard work of the of Championship Director Ric Wymer, the Web Guy Keith Miller who as usual did great work in the shadows on the banners, statistics, etc. that can be seen here, our lovely secretaries Brenda and Aisha and of course the now Singing ex-President, it was down to the partying.

The Party

In true Tee Set spirit the singing, partying and dancing was wild, up to the point that when the Band from Bandung sponsored by Geoff T and Kojo tried to stop the music, some generous Tee Setters chipped him to have them go a bit longer. We again also distinguished ourselves in the drinking department, as the 4 gallons of margaritas disappeared rather quickly, so did the rest of the drinks, last but not least the new President Pastis that was shared in the “poisoned chalice”.

The traditional sunset three club challenge was too much for us after a massive day.  A few Tee Set stalwarts were seen struggling to leave the premises, but the hardened ones including the Champion and new President were later spotted around a pool table in South Jakarta.

Even though we are still missing a lot of them, you can already enjoy hundreds of pictures of the day here.

Thanks also to the Tee Set Championship Sponsors, helpers and staff at Matoa for a great day.
