The Day

Padang Golf Modern validated our decision to establish it as our Monthly Medal home for 2017 by treating our 37 Tee Setters to a welcome drink, Tee Set markers on every tee, their own banners for the Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin, on time start and pretty quick round of around 4.5 hours and a challenging course producing only 1 under-par net round on the day. The weather was also quite enjoyable with clouds all day, but only the occasional drizzle to cool us off.

The early finish allowed us to be done with the awards ceremony before sundown, after which our hardcore group enjoyed watching the Australian Tennis Open final at the club, and then most of the committee and some members completed the all sport day by playing pool in central Jakarta.

We had 2 Newcomers, Mark Manderson’s visiting nephew Tom Watmough and his lovely wife Courtney. We also had a few Welcome Backs worth mentioning, lead by Richie Tiblani after 19 weeks, followed by our favorite Dane Rasmus Kilde and Geoff ‘Caddy Whisperer’ Thwaites after 9 weeks.

The Play

The bearded Fernando Gaggino won Low Net A Grade for his net 72, Pieter Nielen-Groen won Low Net B Grade with 72 on a count-back from Karan Khetan, while Laurie O’Connor won Low Net C Grade for his net 73. All pictured below with a big smile following a comment from the crowd on the youth of the trio.

Mark Manderson was once more awarded Low Gross for his excellent 81 off the stick.

Mark Donnelly won Low Putts with 28.

Marcelo de Jesus won First Birdie on his 1^st hole, disappointing the President who thought he might have won it for one of his very rare birdies on his 3^rd hole.

First Sandy Par was awarded to Mark Johnson for his effort on his 3^rd hole.

Lis Wymer won First Par Over 30 on her 8^th hole, having no competition as no other high handicapper managed a par on the day.

Most Improved went to Jon Pipe for shaving 10 shots on his back nine.

In the Monthly Medal only awards, Pieter Nielen-Groen won Longest Drive Men with 205 meters and Debbie Minicola won Longest Drive Ladies with 140 meters.

While Jon Pipe won Closest to the Pin with 4.8 meters.

And the biggest prize of them all, the Monthly Medal, was awarded to Arthur Mallari for his 40 Stableford points accumulated during the only under-par net round today with his 68. For his performance Arthur will get his named engraved on our Monthly medal shield and received a medal and 2 vouchers for complimentary weekend rounds at Cengkareng.

On a rare occasion our Monster Putter Monkey stayed in the bag, as nobody deserved a picture with it, as everybody had a good day on the greens given the highest number of putts was a respectable 37.

Most Strokes went to Don Duttlinger, referred to as ‘Blue Eyes’ by our lovely secretary Brenda who probably troubled by them forgot to take his picture during the ceremony, for his 12 shots on a hole.

And finally Modern only produced 4 skirts: Jari Antikainen, Mark Donnelly pictured with a lot more hair than normally, of course President Pascal Bekaert who continued his roll for now 6 consecutive skirts, and Rob Davies who avoided the photo:

Special Awards

Our Web Guy extraordinaire produced last week some interesting statistics since he started keeping them in January 2012:

that allowed him to determine that Pieter Nielen-Groen was our 10,000th round since then, when he registered last week, pipping the President who registered one too early, and for which Pieter completed a very lucrative day by being awarded a bottle of his choice from the Tee Set cellar.

Also recognized and awarded a bottle was VP Ric Wymer for playing the most rounds during that period with 219.

And our Web Guy Keith Miller for his hard work since then, which seems to have left him exhausted and in need of that bottle.

Bob Fleischmann’s 70th birthday celebration

A good contingent of Tee Setters attended Bob’s birthday celebration at Star Deli last Saturday night, during which Bob was awarded a special award for his long and continued support of Tee Set.

5th Annual St. Paddy’s Charity Golf Day

On Wednesday March 15th 2017, our friends at Murphy’s & Molly Malone’s Irish Pub will host their 5th Annual St. Paddy’s Charity Golf Tournament at Cengkareng Golf Club with all the proceeds going to the Gentur Cleft Foundation & Syair Foundation for children with HIV, for which you can find more details in our “Classifieds” page.
