Monthly Medal at Modern, Saturday 24th June 2017

The Day

The highlight of the day, apart from everyone’s superior golf of course, was to be the weather which was cloudy, cool and overcast all day, with your scribe failing to come off “sweaty-wet” from an Indonesian golf course for the first time after 11 years of trying. Wonderful, now just have to wait another 11 years.

Just one Newcomer to report in Hal Loevy while there were two notable Welcome Backs in Arne Tjaden at 115 weeks, and a scarcely believable 26 weeks from Cucu who has been a Tee Set bedrock for so long. We hope to see you all regularly in the future!

Some interesting swing comparisons …..

Course in good condition generally, though the greens were a little variable thanks to the man who goes to work every morning with a spike and that cursed bag of gravel tucked under his arm.

Under the odd happenings label we can relate that the Vice-President of Almost Everything was wrapping up and telling anyone who cared to listen where we were to play next week when a bright spark in the audience reminded him that he had yet to announce the winner of  the Monthly Medal!!

Completely unabashed, Ric duly awarded a completely unfazed Dave Baglivo his second Monthly Medal award in three attempts for his splendid 41 Stableford points. Well done Bags!

Finally we took the opportunity to thank the resto staff in the time-honoured fashion for their consistently great service.

Even on the eve of the Eid they were not to complain about more than half a dozen of the Usual Suspects exchanging war stories until after 7pm. Great staff, they serve us well, well done them.

The Play

With the red tees not terribly far advanced for once there was but one Skirt today – and there are no prizes for guessing who got it. The Immediate Past President of the West confessed that under a less kind regime than our own he would have got three of them. He is special as we all know 🙂

No Monster Putter award again today with the highest number of putts being but a respectable 38, though Joe and Mick each took 11 strokes at a hole to “win” Most Strokes.

Grade winners C, B and A above were Mike Harling, Tom G and Richard with excellent net scores of 68,68 and 69 respectively.

Longest Drive at 245 meters, against the wind, went to Arne Tjaden while Closest to the Pin after some discussion went to Stuart Wigley.

Once again the VP of Almost Everything had to point out that the “only one prize rule” applies just to our regular prizes and NOT to the once a month (at best) prizes of Long Drive and Closest to the Pin.

Fuller, player by player, details can be found here and more photos of the day on the Tee Set Gallery.

Tee Set Matchplay

Match plays as follows:

Divya beat Chris Lever 1 up on the last hole.

Simon Reynolds beat Pieter Groen 2 and 1 (?)

Tom Grace beat Joe Callahan 7 and 6

Divya and Chris played an absolute cracker of a game with Chris holding the lead most of the time. With four holes to play Chris was up by 3 but Divya who is a soccer buddy of Chris knew it was not over until the fat lady sang and took full advantage when nerves stopped his opponent closing out the match. With two pars and a birdie Divya had the momentum and it all came down to the last hole, the par 5 18th.  Chris managed a respectable par that under normal circumstances would have been the game but Divya drained a birdie putt from 2 meters and it was all over.

All square would have been a fair result but there is nothing fair in golf.

Golf Addicts

We all have it in varying degrees however walking amongst us are a couple of addicts in spades, doubled. As is their wont, Wina and Efsi were not happy with 18 holes played in under 4 hours on Saturday so they took off on a mission to get another 18 in before darkness. Imagine the girls motoring down the fairways in their buggy playing speed golf but nevertheless completing their bonus round before dark in a little under 2 hours.

A hard act to follow ladies.

The Tee Set Presidency

With the other members of your committee point-blank refusing the poisoned chalice, they were instead to wholeheartedly recommend that Roger Finnie become the new President of Tee Set – a choice that was to be confirmed by unanimous acclamation of the membership after prize giving today. Congratulations Roger!.

Roger is of course already heavily involved in committee work, not least with running our Interleague participation – and tells us he is looking forward to serving further as President.

If you need something doing give it to a busy man.

Next up

Please note this is a change from the original scheduled venue due to course modifications and maintenance

As a result of the course being in the middle of renovations and heavy maintenance, we have agreed with Cengkareng management to cancel our scheduled visit there on Sunday and, as Cengkareng is perhaps the memberships most popular course, find somewhere in the programme for the rest of the year to substitute

We have been able to secure Matoa for Sunday instead, 600,000 including a shared cart and with a first tee-time of 11am from 1 and 10. Sign up here for the fun and competition and get some very early practice at the home of Tee Set’s 2017 Championship

See yah at Matoa …. Tee Set
