The Day

Great weather and a fabulous day at Matoa with few golfers on the course except for our own 26 resilient post-Lebaran Tee Setters, Tee Setters made of stern stuff of course having survived 10 days or more without a driver, jaga or cook 🙂
The greens were a bit furry but thankfully were not Ramadan-spiked like most other courses in Jakarta at this time. The holiday season impact extended to the restaurant where what the staff could provide from the menu went not much further than nasi goring or fried noodles, however, most were pretty happy.
Rather more seriously, Richard Green arrived with an empty cool-box expecting to stock up on a half a dozen cold Bintangs for the round but just a solitary can could be found. No doubt this is why we didn’t see Richard in the winning circle this week – lack of aiming fluid does not help his game. should this happen again in the future Richard we will add 3 strokes to your handicap.
A warm welcome to Owen Evans who had a rather memorable introduction to Tee Set. After going OB on his 3rd hole he tee’d up again only to duff it and fall short of the ladies tee. Welcome to Tee Set Owen!
Key welcome backs headed by a Kenny Black at 61 weeks who blamed soccer duties for keeping him away for so long. Rob Cheng and Livia were a close second at 44 weeks, had no excuses but promised to join next week at BSD since it is close to home. Tony Wood at 19 weeks also well worth mentioning after his stout effort in finally claiming his maiden skirt.
The Play

Details are available for Tony Wood’s skirt courtesy of Laurie O’Conner who was loyal enough to share with us that Tony hit the ground a good 12 inches behind the tee and failed in his attempt to get the ball off the tee box. Craig Binks was however to keep all details of his own skirt quiet so we can only speculate that his fast-as-lightning backswing was his undoing as it has been on many times in the past. Keep your pets and any young children well clear as Binksy draws one back.
Debbie Minicola came close but escaped having a photo with the Monster Putter monkey mask with her 39 putts – less than the 40 required, however, she could not escape the Rp50K fine for most strokes with not one but two 10s. Fortunately she had good company for the photo with Rob Cheng, Laurie O’Conner and Kim Pham all being caught by the same 10 stroke sting.
Owen Evans was our only Newcomer but quickly demonstrated that his golfing was likely to be worthy of future attention and comment. For now we just observe that on hole #14 Owen’s caddy was challenged as to whether to track his ball heading to the green or his wayward 5 iron that had slipped out of his hands in the follow through and spun ever so close to putting a significant dent in his playing partner’s buggy.
The golden rule of golf is stay behind the player taking his shot – or risk unexpected and inconvenient injury.

Ric checking to make sure he is mispronouncing things correctly
Jaturaporn won his match play against that hard-charging campaigner Laurie O’Connor 4 and 3 – and no doubt this contributed to his low net 69 win for B grade low net.
Lis Wymer came tantalisingly close to breaking 100 for the first time ever with her gross 101 to take low net C grade with 69 while Matt Fairey took low net A grade with a 73 although the mathematics might have shown differently if scores were added up correctly on the day.
Low gross went to Ryan Shepard with his 82 off the stick. Ryan never uses a driver and why would you bother when he can hit a 5 iron over 200m off the tee?
The ex-President of Almost Everything was true to his word and came prepared with extra prizes for the key winners. A box of Grand Slam Golf’s rejuvenated Pro V1 balls were awarded to those winners for making the effort to get out of the house during the Idul Fitri “return to Jakarta traffic chaos” worthwhile!
Other winners were Alistair Livingstone with 27 Low Putts, Rob Cheng for 1st Birdie on hole #3, Mark Johnson with 1st Sandy on hole #7 and Tom Alcedo stealing Lis’s thunder with a par on hole 12. And let’s not forget the Vice-President of Almost Everything who drilled two long-range puts to set up Most Improved with two birdies and a 7 shot improvement on his back nine.
More detailed player by player results here while more snaps can be found on the Tee Set Gallery.
