The Day

A pretty decent turnout as usual at PJ with 34 Tee Setters turning up on a blessed weather day, and with the field getting round the course in an acceptable 4.5 hours making it especially blessed. The course was also in good condition with none of the spiking issues we have seen on other courses recently, and friendly enough that no one had the 40 putts required to qualify for the “Monster Putter ‘Prize’ ”

Volunteers queueing up to reprogram PJ’s billing software …

We did however have the usual PJ pantomime about not being able to settle one’s green fees for the cheaper afternoon round before midday, though a couple of Tee Setters found that simply leaving a credit card with the cashiers five minutes before seemed to be acceptable. All completely fixable nonsense.

Three Newcomers to welcome today in Shaun Dickson, Edwin Liew and Pat Baumgartner. A warm welcome to you all.

Great to have Edwin visiting from Brunei in the group today, it was priceless to watch Simon Reynolds’ reaction to not winning Low Gross for once!

A couple of notable Welcome Backs in Christian Molau whose return to Denmark more than three years ago makes sure he tops the leader board today with Andrew Chee in second place at a mere 58 weeks.

Christian is here on a family visit for a couple of weeks only and tells us that the last time he played was indeed with Tee Set all those 157 weeks ago – and a certain rustiness was indeed evident in his play, though his capacity for Danish curses seemed undiminished, averaging much better than one per hole.

With a malfunctioning printer being handled by Ric writing down the results from the computer on paper somewhat indecipherably, Roger sat out from his usual MC-ing the prize giving allowing Ric to take on the challenge of reading his own writing and, in particular, making sure we all had rides or a map to the Tee Set BBQ immediately following. The latter at least seemed to work with everybody making it in good time as far as we know.

PJ proved once again what an attractive overall package it provides. While the days of it being our home week-in week-out are long gone, it is a fine element in our overall mix – and, thankfully, always ready and willing to take us in the short-term fixture “emergency” situations that crop up from time to time.

The Play

PJ is no walkover and sub-par nets were as rare as hen’s teeth, however Axel, Tony and Mike took the A, B and C Grade honours respectively, with the pick being Tony’s net 67, a result that will surely attract the attentions of the handicapper πŸ™‚

Newcomer Edwin Liew played Β the course sight unseen but had the game to shoot a 9 over par 81 and take Low Gross honours. Clearly Interleague material however commuting from Brunei once a month might prove a challenge too far.

This week’s quiz question – who’s that hiding in the wig?

Huge Welcome Back Christian featured heavily, managing to take Most Strokes on a hole and a skirt as well as Low Putts in the absence of Jochen Sautter.

Christian was joined by 8 others in the Skirts hall of shame; bringing a satisfied grin to an otherwise rather financially challenged Treasurer today.

More detailed player by player results here and photos of the day can be found on our gallery.

2017 Tee Set Matchplay

The matchplay moves on with wins for Simon Reynolds who drained a long putt on the 18th green to edge out Roger Finnie while Mick Dodsworth took full advantage of his large handicap to overcome Jon Pipe – with this match also going to the 18th.

The Tee Set BBQ

Our entrant for “Masterchef Australia” this year ….

The hardest working man on the night …….

We mentioned in our last post that the Treasurer was “loosening the purse strings” a little for the Tee Set BBQ at the Immediate Past Singing President’s new gaff in Cipete.

Sting Mullins showing off his formal wear …

That was to prove something of an understatement however as we were to be assailed on all fronts by beers, quite superb Margaritas and much else on an industrial scale – and this to wash down similarly generous amounts of fine steaks, sausages and pork chops.

A huge array of great sides too thanks to the efforts of Yunita especially but also Santi.

And last but not least a big thank you to Craig for doing such a great job on the barbie – he alleged he hadn’t done one since he left Australia in 2010. It didn’t show.

The cute if a little chubby fellow above was not, to the undoubted relief of Neil Mullins back in Aussie, to feature amongst offerings from Craig’s BBQ, instead proving the centre of attention wherever he wandered during the evening, a shade more formally dressed than the rest of us.

Wimbledon corner

The venue was just about a perfect for such an occasion with lots of space to spread out and socialise with fellow Tee Setters, including a group passionately following the Men’s Finals from Wimbledon – Federer seemed to be a popular winner.Β The only underused asset was, in spite of most predictions, the swimming pool, a pool which was to receive attention only of the voluntary kind, this from just young Tom Miller and his Dad.

Our bigly thanks to Craig and Yunita for hosting the event and all the hard work they put in to making it happen and giving us such a fantastic evening. A word of thanks also to today’s Grade B winner for ensuring that the Treasurer’s purse opening didn’t totally bankrupt us! And finally thanks to the Official Tee Set Mixologist, Jamal, for making surely the best Margaritas to be found in Jakarta and its environs if not the whole of Indonesia. Contact Ric if you ever need Jamal’s services at really rather reasonable cost.

Plenty more photos of the evening’s fun can be found on our gallery here.
