The Day
Our first visit to Modern for the year saw 34 Tee Setters gather to take on a layout which always has the potential to return scores a little higher than the Tee Set averages. Sunday was no exception with only 2 players breaking their handicap on a course which played well despite the recent heavy rain it had taken, including through-out the previous night. We played lift, clean and place on the fairways and the greens played true as reflected by some good putting returns.
As we have become accustomed to at Modern, in the middle of some finely tuned arrangements for the pairings, we got rushed out to start 30 minutes early to get ahead of some slow groups turning at 9 holes and another larger group of players also looking to start around the same time as us. Whilst causing a little bit of confusion as we worked out whether we were all off the first hole, some quick re-organization saw us have a split start as planned. This fortunately enabled around half the field to only suffer a couple of holes of the rain mid-round as the rainy season caught us properly for the first time this season. The back groups and later arrivals did however get washed out towards the end of their rounds and we had to equitably score their remaining 1 or 2 holes before the prize giving.
We had 1 newcomer in Amol Singhal who was given a warm Tee Set welcome and an appearance from an old golfing stalwart on the Jakarta scene, Jens Roestel, who was captured for our database finally.
Nick Shearman after 58 weeks led a quartet of notable welcome backs including Jim Berndt, Brandon Curson and Matthew’s father, Eric Cherrett who was passing through on his return to England following the Ashes Tour. Good to see you all back and we hope to see you out again soon.
Also welcomed back was Secretary Brenda Mayland who managed all the administration on the day. Brenda received our appreciation of thanks for all her efforts on the day and over the course of the past year as VP Ric Wymer belatedly was able to hand to her a shopping voucher which was pending since the Championships.
The Play
The transition of our monthly medal away from Modern to Cengkareng resulted in 1 hiccup on arrangements in that the Long Drive and NTP spotters and banners were out so we played these mini-competitions on the day. James Ross showed his strength off the tee with a drive of 220m to take out the former prize and newcomer Amol Singhal showed his abilities to knock his ball to within 22o cm to win the latter.
Our usual modest haul of skirts at Modern saw father and son, Matthew and Eric Cherrett joined by VP Bill Lloyd and Andreas Stowoky for the photo as Brandon Curson and Nick Shearman were unfortunately MIA at the time of the prize giving. Brandon therefore also missed his photo with the monkey as Monster Putter but we did capture a mystery shot of the Most Strokes winner, reportedly Joseph D’Cruz for an 11 on one hole.
Matthew Cherrett recovered to win Most Improved with a back nine 10 shots better than his front. First Birdie went to Matthew Powell for his effort on hole 3 and First Sandy to Stefan Skibinski for his effort of the first hole despite his initial desire to hand the prize to one of his playing partners.
Low Putts was close affair and after accounting for other prizes, Mark Johnson and VP Bill Lloyd were awarded the prize jointly for their 27 putts on the day. Low Gross was awarded to Jeff Landau for his excellent, and by far best of the day, 77 off the stick which also tied him for Low New A with President Roger Finnie on net 72. Low Net B was won by Doug McQuater for his best net of the day 69 and Low Net C by Juju Juhairiah for her net 79.
As usual detailed scores of the day can be found here and photos here.
