As Clyde has had such a long term impact on and involvement with Tee Set going back to its earliest days we lead off our post with this tribute. Also, thank you to Ric, Jack Calcote, Geoff Thwaites and Keith Miller for their contributions.
Clyde Leon Wickiser 1942-2018
It is with sadness that we share the news of the recent passing of Tee Set’s longest active member, Clyde Wickiser.
Although not noted as one of the participants at Tee Set’s initial gathering in 1983, it may be purely by accident that he was not there as Clyde was already based in Jakarta and an active part of the Jakarta ex-pat scene at that time. Certainly from his first recorded participation in 1984, Clyde was an ardent supporter of Tee Set golf and everything the society stood for: fun golf, camaraderie and a few bintangs after the game washed down by an active debate on the state of world affairs or one of his famous stories.
Born in Belleview Nebraska and educated at Brentwood High School, Missouri, Clyde served in the US military in Europe from 1963-1966 before entering the world of Oil and Gas. Like many before and since, this brought him to Jakarta where he met and married Pinkan (“Pinky”) Warouw in May 1983. With Pinky being a well-known singer on the Jakarta pub circuit, in his usual deferential manner Clyde would often introduce himself as Pinky’s Husband.
The introduction of Tee Set’s rule of “You must be able to Stand unaided on the First Tee” could well have been made for him as Clyde was well known for his regular week-end routine: Top Gun for Friday lunch, Amigos, the Green Pub or wherever Pinky was singing on Saturday night and Tee Set at Pangkalan Jati on Sunday – with Clyde often believed to have come straight from Saturday night to PJ. Clyde was always one of the last to leave on Sundays having put the world to rights and he participated in Tee Set as a member, as Handicap Secretary, as President and as a supporter for more than 30 years before ill health stopped him being able to come out and play just a couple of years ago.
On Sunday, VP and old friend Ric Wymer said a few words in memorandum for Clyde and on behalf of all the Tee Set family, our commiserations go to Pinky and all his family in Indonesia and the USA. RIP Clyde and your spirit will live on in Tee Set folklore.
The Day
Happy Chinese New Year to all Tee Set members and we hope the year of the Dog will bring you happiness, success and good health. Taking advantage of the long holiday week-end, a good turn-out of 37 Tee Setters made the short trip to Senayan Nasional in the center of Jakarta.
We were greeted by fine weather and an empty course meaning we were able to navigate our rounds in very good time with the first groups home well before 4pm. This gave us plenty of time to enjoy our refreshments afterwards with most players enjoying a good discussion and meal before the announcements.
It was a pleasure to welcome 3 new Tee Setters, Hana Ariestya, Frans Heuken and Detlef Blumke as well as welcome back Niclas Roos and Joe Callahan after 53 and 32 weeks, respectively. We look forward to seeing all out again soon.
A thank you to Beby and Lis for assisting with all the registrations and scoring on the day and pictures of the day can be found here.
The Play
Although not the longest course we play, there are a few longer carries for the men to the ladies tees as well as some visually intimidating tee shots which helps to explain our healthy return of skirts on the day: Amol Singhal, Arthur Mallari, Dan Javier, Geoff Thwaites, Joe Callahan, Matt Otto, Mike Harling and Niclas Roos all getting to share the Tee Set dress up outfits.
Although benefiting from the 1 fine rule, Geoff Thwaites and Mike Harling remained on deck for their Most Strokes photo for shooting 11 on a hole. The greens at Senayan always play faster than we normally see but Sunday saw 4 Tee Setters getting close to a half century of putts. 3 players tied with 45 putts, but they were out done by our new comer Frans Heuken who needed 49 shots with the flat stick and took home Monster Putter. Getting less value on the greens was President Roger Finnie who only had 29 putts but was rewarded with Low Putts on the day.
Although missing from his usual skirt photo, Stefan Skibinski was not to be out done by his wife’s win last week and came home 15 shots better to win Most Improved: however it seems he was so excited that he could not keep his hands still long enough for us to capture the photo clearly! Rosie Putri took home First Birdie for her Sandy Birdie on hole 2 and Ian Butcher First Sandy for his effort on hole 3.
Continuing her fine run of form, Tee Set Champion Santi Miller had the best score of the day with a Low Gross of 79 strokes. Our Grade winners on the day were Aljosja Van Dorssen as Low Net A with a net 68, Amol Singhal with a net 67 to win Low Net B and repeating his win from last week, Dirk Kruip for Low Net C with his net 69.
Congratulations to all the winners on the day and the detailed results of the day are here.
Next Up: Cengkareng Sunday 25th February 2018
Being the last Sunday of the month, we head to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues at Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s 2018’s Monthly Medals. This week will also be the 3rd round of the Cycle VII of the Eclectic.
Whether you wish to enjoy a pleasant stroll or ride the a hover-board over the rolling fairways, Cengkareng is always an enjoyable experience with its well trained caddies to guide you round and its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.
A reminder that there are just 2 weeks remaining to get your preliminary round completed in the Match Play so please, if you have note already played, reach out to your opponent and arrange the match either this week-end or next. A reminder also to send James Ross your results when they are in so they can be officially updated.
If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp800,000 please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual

Thanks for the well written tribute to Clyde. He will be sorely missed.
