Sunday 25th February 2018: Cengkareng

The Day

No newcomers this week but, as one of Tee Set’s favourite venues, Cengkareng always attracts a healthy turnout and this Sunday was no exception. With 2 weeks to go for the Match Play preliminary round, the Monthly Medal, 3rd Round of Eclectic VII and the promise of a relaxing margarita at the end of the round, there was a lot to attract players this week and the call was heeded with 51 Tee Setters turning out on the day. Our highest regular turnout since Cengkareng 50 weeks before…. and more on that later.!

We welcomed back Tony Blackburn after 107 weeks and he like the rest of us was treated to a wonderful sunny day and a golf course playing dry, fast and true: perfect conditions for a fun day out.

Possibly due to the hotter temperatures affecting the speed of play for some groups and/or a couple of groups getting inserted in between us around the turn, but we were quite slow to finish this week although everyone just got completed before dark, including one match play which went to an extra hole.

Thanks to Ken Runyon and his team at GSE, who came on as sponsors for the Monthly Medal in 2018, we also had our first trophies to award as prizes for Low Net and Low Gross in addition to the Monthly Medal.

With 51 players, we kept our Secretary Brenda Mayland busy with the pre and post round administration and thank you to Brenda for making sure the day ran smoothly as usual. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

A healthy turnout translated into a healthy set of fines this week, principally for skirts as usual with 12 Tee Setters getting caught out during the day: Aljosja Van Dorssen, Brett Shields, Craig Edwards, Dan Brody, Dan Javier, Goetz Ebbecke, Matt McGowan, Matthew Cherrett, Mike Webb, Rob Cheng and Rudie Basson all getting the photo call with the skirt.

David Baglivo heeded the call of Monkey for his Most Strokes of 13 on a hole whilst Monster Putter went to Livia Raviova obviously showing some rustiness after 28 weeks away, getting some extra practice with 41 strokes with the putter.

Richard Green was our Most Improved this week shaving 11 strokes off his outward score coming home and Mark Fiorello won Low Putts for his 29 strokes on the greens – both absent at the prize giving. Ivan Byriel scored our first and only par for Handicaps =>30 on hole 2 and always a First Birdie winner is a birdie on hole 1, this week scored by Holger Guenzel.

With Ken Runyon graciously passing over his donated Low Gross prize, Roger Finnie took home this trophy whilst our Low Net A winner was Ian Butcher on a 2 way count-back from Ken and Steve Moruzzi with a net 73. With net 69’s, our B Grade winner was Lis Wymer and C Grade winner was Richard Bolton, both also collecting their trophies.

Our Long Drive prizes were won by Santi Miller and Andrew Waite whilst Wina Nugraha was closest to the pin.

Back to the “deja vue”…. the last time we had 50+ players at Cengkareng was March 2017 and Axel Hertzke shot 80 gross for a net 67 to win Low Net A on the day. Repeating the score precisely on Sunday saw him take home the Monthly Medal this time and join the illustrious list of winners on the shield.

Congratulations to Axel and all the other winners on the day and you can check out the detailed scores here.
