Sunday 4th March 2018: Matoa Nasional

With the schedule to BSD still under negotiation, we made a late switch this week to return to the home of the Tee Set Championships, Matoa Nasional. A bright sunny day welcomed the 30 Tee Setters who came out this week with several needing to fight the traffic on the way and thus arriving closer to tee off time than they expected. However, traffic on the course was also busy and so we could only send our groups out as carts arrived in from the early starters. Overall there was little delay as the turnaround was managed efficiently by the starter and we headed out just after our 11.30am booking.

Matoa is well known for late afternoon showers and this week was no exception with everyone needing to come off the course for a 20 minute break due to a heavy storm coming through around 2pm. Fortunately it abated fairly quickly and we were all able to go out and finish our rounds without further interruption.

No new comers or long welcome backs this week but 3 match-plays were completed with Matt Otto prevailing on the 19th against Jens Roestel, Matthew Cherrett winning against Arthur Mallari and Dan Javier overcoming Fitrat Ameer. A reminder to send your scores into James Ross as the next round will be announced this week based on the preliminary round results.

A thank you to Brenda for managing the administration and scoring on the day and for Lis Wymer for making sure Brenda had a lift to and from the course with Ric being away this week. Pictures of the day can be found here.

The Play

Matoa is not known for being overly challenging and so we were unusually able to capture both a couple of skirts for Detlef Blumke and Stefan Skibinski as well as Monster Putter for Tee Set stalwart, Laurie O’Connor. Completing the set of fines was Pekka Kivioja for his Most Strokes of 12 on a hole. Pekka however recouped his fine by winning 1st Par for handicaps >=30 for his effort on hole 2.

Always a winner, First Birdie on hole 1 was won by James Ross whilst Arthur Mallari pipped 6 others on 29 putts by caressing his ball 28 times on the greens to win Low Putts. Most Improved was won by John Suermondt who made best use of the rain break to come home 10 shots better than his outward nine.

Despite losing his match-play, Fitrat Ameer again showed his love of Matoa shooting an impressive 75 to win Low Gross. Low B was won on a count-back by Craig Edwards after 4 players tied with net 69’s where he was joined by Low Net A winner, Steve Moruzzi after his net 70 and our best net of the day, Low Net C winner Andrew Shaw who had a net 68. Detailed results can be found here.

With Jagorawi Golf & Country Club having reduced rates for Tee Set and Inter-league this year, we will combine our weekly Tee Set event there on the 6 week-ends when Inter-League is being held. The first round of matches for the Inter-League will begin in just over 2 weeks time on March 18th.

Tee Set will be running 1 team only this year. Please advise Captain Roger Finnie or VP Ric Wymer if you are interested in playing in the Inter-League matches this year. For those wanting to learn more about Inter-League please visit here for more details.

Battle Royale III: 20th – 22nd April in Bali

The dates for Battle Royale III have now been locked in as 20th to 22nd April 2018 and it is to be played at Handara Golf Club, up in the mountains of Bali. We are looking to have a team of at least 16 players as we seek to defend the trophy won last year at Cengkareng but there is no limit as Par 5 Club will match our team numbers.

We have secured an excellent package which covers 3 rounds of golf (2 Saturday and 1 Sunday in the match), 2 nights B&B on the course, a Saturday night function and Sunday prize giving lunch. There are different rooming options but the cost is under Rp5m per head for a single rooming golfer and under Rp4m per head 2 golfers sharing. For those with non-playing partners then the extra charge will be around Rp750,000 on top of the single player cost.

Flights, drinks and Friday night dinner will be on top. Additional golf on Friday or Monday and additional accommodation is available.

More details on the schedule and the pricing based on the options selected will be shared to those who are interested in joining. For now, Captain Nick Gleeson needs to know who is interest in joining and any extra requests so please go here to register your interest.
