Sunday 18th March 2018: Jagorawi Golf & Country Club

The Day

The Tee Set network has been working overtime the last few weeks and this week saw us welcome a further 7 newcomers; mostly recruited thanks to a mixture of work and social connections from our members but a special mention to the enterprising Tee Setters who recruited one of our newcomers during the rain delay last week at Modern. All in all, very encouraging for us to see numbers growing again after a period when there were more departures than arrivals.

A special Tee Set welcome to Jongchun Kim, Lim Jongwha, Kidakorn Angkanarak, Patrick Pech, Thomas Praming, Somchai Nuimark and Zahren Mohamed and we look forward to seeing you all at future events soon.

Sunday also saw us welcome back Dhitpong Viraikorn after 50 weeks and Christian Molau after 35 weeks.

Our newcomers and welcome backs joined a tremendous turnout of 46 Tee Setters who descended on Jagorawi for the early morning start at one of Jakarta’s top golf courses, the fine weather, the improved pricing we have been able to secure this year and to support the launch of the 2018 Jakarta Inter-League Season.

With 46 Tee Setters and approximately 35 other JIL participants, we were able to secure a 10 hole shot-gun start on the New Course and after the initial groups headed out we enjoyed a steady round with little hold-ups under clear blue skies.

As Tee Set was out in large numbers, we were also able to support some of the other teams who were short handed so that all the JIL matches were held with full complements of players. Sadly, it was not to help the Tee Set team who failed to fire on the day and went down 10-0 to Tin Cups. After the round we were able to enjoy the excellent F&B on offer at the club whilst the results and presentations were held and thanks to the early start, we were all finished mid-afternoon so everyone could enjoy an earlier than normal return to Jakarta.

With VP Ric Wymer nursing a sore elbow having been hit by another of our members whilst out on a social round, he was out and about collecting lots of photos on the day and these can be found here. A thank you to Ric and to Brenda Mayland who as always, managed all the registrations and scoring on the day with her usual efficiency.

The Play

With JIL involving 16 of the registered Tee Set players, we decided not to award Monster Putter or Low Putts since the match-play affected the putting stats for those participants. However we otherwise had our usual recognition of the daily winners and fines.

Chris Smith was recorded Most Strokes on a hole with 12 and was therefore captured with the Monkey whilst our skirt photo was well populated again with Amol Singhal, Chris Lever, Christian Molau, Dan Brody, David Baglivo, Detlef Blumke, Kidapron Angkanarak, Laurie O’Cnnor and Pekka Kivioja all sharing the Tee Set dress up outfit. Amol however was our Most Improved on the day with 13 strokes to offset his fine for the skirt.

John Suermondt was in the winners circle for a second week in a row, picking up First Par for handicaps >=30 whilst Paul Daud was awarded First Sandy for his effort on hole 8. After 50 weeks away Dhitpong Viraikorn was straight into the winners circle with his effort on hole 1 to win First Birdie.

Our newcomer, Jongchun Kim was the Low Gross on the day for his 86 off the stick whilst Jagorawi showed it difficulty with net pars taking home our 3 Low Net categories. Another winner from last week, Matthew Powell, won A Grade and he was joined Kongkiat Chaisri (B Grade) and Matt Otto (C Grade) in being recognized for their excellent rounds.

Thank you to everyone who turned out and supported the day and the individual detailed results are here.

Next Up: Cenkareng 25th March 2018: Monthly Medal and Eclectic VII final round

Being the last Sunday of the month, we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s 2018’s Monthly Medal.

Thanks to the generous support of Ken Runyon and his team at Accel Golf and Golf and Special Events Management we will recognizing the Low Gross and Low A, B & C winners with a trophy in addition to presentation of the Monthly Medal to the overall winner.

This week will also be the 4th and final  round of Cycle VII of the Tee Set Eclectic with James Ross currently leading after 3 rounds with an Eclectic score of 56. With a number of big movers last month, the pursuing pack caught up somewhat so there is still a lot to play for over the final round this Sunday. For those wishing to check their scores and current placing please check out the Eclectic web-page.

A reminder that the match-play has entered the knockout rounds and in order to help us get the games completed in good time, please look on the Match Play web-page to see your opponent and reach out to them and arrange the match as soon as possible. Also do not forget to send to James Ross your results when they are in so they can be officially updated.

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant stroll or ride the a hover-board over the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp800,000 please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual. A note that we are limited to 64 players on the day so please sign up early. Should we exceed 64 sign-ups we will run a waiting list based on first come first served.

Battle Royale III: 20th – 22nd April in Bali

The dates for Battle Royale III have now been locked in as 20th to 22nd April 2018 and it is to be played at Handara Golf Club, up in the mountains of Bali. We are looking to have a team of at least 16 players as we seek to defend the trophy won last year at Cengkareng but there is no limit as Par 5 Club will match our team numbers. Presently we have 12 players signed up so are looking for some extra players to join so if you think you can join please check your diaries and let us know as below.

We have secured an excellent package which covers 3 rounds of golf (2 Saturday and 1 Sunday in the match), 2 nights B&B on the course, a Saturday night function and Sunday prize giving lunch. There are different rooming options but the cost is under Rp5m per head for a single rooming golfer and under Rp4m per head 2 golfers sharing. For those with non-playing partners then the extra charge will be around Rp750,000 on top of the single player cost.

Flights, drinks and Friday night dinner will be on top. Additional golf on Friday or Monday and additional accommodation is available.

More details on the schedule and the pricing based on the options selected will be shared to those who are interested in joining. For now, Captain Nick Gleeson needs to know who is interest in joining and any extra requests so please go here to register your interest.

John Suermondt with a handicap over 30?? I have been playing Tee Set since the mid-1980’s and with Suermondt since early 2000’s. You’ll need to break his knee to make that right…

Steve it is great to hear you are following Tee Set still as we love to hear from members like yourself who were part of the Tee Set history here in Jakarta. John says he is waiting for you to come and join us again for a game so he can share his practice tips in getting his handicap to where it is. He also says he now has enough winnings to buy you a bintang to catchup on old times too.
