This week sees us again take advantage of the lighter traffic on the Jagorawi Toll to visit another of those gems of a course, Emeralda Golf Club.

With its 27 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer you can walk the footsteps of legends whilst enjoying one of the more picturesque courses we will play this year. Usually difficult to get good group booking slots at a reasonable price, Emeralda has been off our calendar for a couple of years so we are pleased to include it this year to our schedule. The rate of Rp950k includes the cart and dinner afterwards and with an early tee time we will be able to enjoy fully the day and not be too late returning home.

This week also marks the golfing farewell to Tony Howarth who will be moving before the end of June. Tony has been a strong supporter of Tee Set activities and we wish him well on the next leg of his adventures.

To come wish Tony farewell and join in all the fun of a Tee Set Sunday please sign up here.

Rancamaya 3rd June 2018: Tee Set versus D.O.G.S.

The Day

Rancamaya has developed into one of the main events on our calendar and this year was no exception with it proving to be a popular and hugely successful week-end. With so many players cross-pollinating the D.O.G.S. and Tee Set memberships, the numbers captured for Tee Set do not tell the whole story of well over 50 players and family enjoying the traditional Saturday night BBQ and 74 players heading out on Sunday to participate in the Tee Set versus D.O.G.S. match or to enjoy a social round with friends and participate to one of either Societies’ weekly event.

Logistically this all requires good administration and so a huge thank you to Mark Johnson who handled all the hotel bookings and BBQ planning, John Brown for the course bookings, Glen Menyennett for the extra meat which made sure there was enough for the BBQ, Bill Lloyd for his music and Ric Wymer and Beby who along with Mark and the D.O.G.S. Committee ensured the week-end went as smoothly as we could manage. We also would like to thank Dan Javier and Arthur Mallari of San Miguel who kindly sponsored our beer refreshments on Saturday night, which proved very popular with everyone.

All good organization cannot however survive first contact with Golf Course management and so as usual we needed to adapt our planning as extra groups on Saturday appeared around our flights. Nevertheless, we managed to get everyone back in time for an early BBQ on Saturday which, as always, proved a fun and sociable evening and which was capped off by a formal toast to the inspiration behind the week-end, our dear departed friend Juergen Degert.

Sunday again saw Mark and Ric needing to manage not only the match and players but also manage the starter who was trying to push our flights out 90 minutes early: a challenge for those who stayed over and wished to recover from Saturday night’s party and of course, for those coming for the day only who arrived for a 12pm tee time. Some patience and firm control saw everything get organized and both the 8 flights of the match and 11 other flights went out by just after 12pm so we could all be finished in good time to finish off any remaining refreshments from Saturday night and enjoy the good Club House F&B whilst the prize giving was conducted.

No newcomers this week but a notable welcome back to Connor Dodsworth after 118 weeks and Sofie Bright after 33 weeks.

Clearly there was so much fun going on that the photo taking was a little light – we missed Pascal’s keen eye for a picture this year. What we have is posted here and if anyone has more pictures to share please forward them to the Tee Set email and we will add them.

The Play

Despite the challenges of Saturday night for many, there were some impressive results on the day as you will read further of below. Rancamaya however can also prove to be tricky and so it proved for Andrew Shaw and Jeff Durham who were caught out to collect a skirt apiece. Most Strokes of 13 and Monster Putter of 44 both were secured by Kathy Scalabre who chose to have her photo taken with the Monkey. Lis Wymer had the most improved for her back 9 which was 11 shots better than the front.

First Birdie went to Simon Oxley who birdied hole 1 to guarantee himself a prize. Some juggling of the prizes saw Jaturaporn Pibankul awarded 1st Sandy for his effort on hole 6 and David Baglivo Low Putts for his 26 shots on the greens as part of his impressive net 66 despite still feeling the effects of a heavy Saturday night.

Best Gross of the day again went to Gary Hing for his excellent 76 off the stick whilst Richard Mau (72), Geoff Thwaites (71) and Andrew Shaw (72) took home the prizes for Low Net A, B and C, respectively.

Having completed the presentations for both D.O.G.S. and Tee Set’s weekly competition, the last order of business was for the Juergen Degert Trophy to be awarded to the winning Captain, Ric Wymer, with Tee Set having prevailed on the day 10-6. This is the first time Tee Set have won on its 3rd event so we will be looking to even up the score next year!
