The Day
Sunday saw us head to Matoa for our traditional Anniversary Scramble event to celebrate Tee Set’s 35th Birthday. The day is always a lot of fun and attracts a good turnout with teams made up of players from different societies coming together with the Tee Set regulars to enjoy the day.
As always the day was well supported by our sponsors and so a big thank you to Asia Serv, Hot-Hed, JS Luwansa, Asian Tigers, San Miguel & Anker and Kojo as well as VP Ric Wymer and Rudie Basson who made some personal donations for the prize giving.
With few changes this year to teams on the day, registration was relatively smooth so players could enjoy some refreshments before the round to wash down the ever popular hot dogs from the BBQ and study the rules. All players were given a commemorative ball marker to mark the day whilst the President and VP had time to remember the good old days of 1980’s drivers whilst they arranged the set up of the novelty holes for the day. We also captured a proper photo with the shield of Craig Edwards after he won the Monthly Medal in July.
Apologies for anybody we may have missed but we were pleased to welcome for the first time Bernard Carr, Simon Caduff, Siegfried Sariowan, Clive Carlin, James Evans, Mark Souders and Rakesh Surampudi. We also had a welcome back to Jaco Zaayman who returned to the golfing fold after a serious illness.
With the refreshments on ice, the 18 teams and 73 golfers headed out on time under sunny skies to go and enjoy themselves whilst getting regularly served by our roving carts supplying cold drinks across the course to ensure the day was well oiled.
Although there were reports of a full moon before we finished, we were in fact all done in good time and able to enjoy the prize giving in the private room well before dark. Thank you to Pascal and Ric for bringing their cameras on the day and the pictures posted so far can be seen here; others will follow in due course once the VP has finished moving house this week.
The Presentations
President Roger Finnie opened the presentations by welcoming everyone to the Anniversary Event and thanking our sponsors, the team at Matoa and the Tee Set committee members who had all contributed to making the day special.
VP Ric Wymer then shared a few words on the history of Tee Set before long time member and sponsor Jack Calcote was asked to raise a toast to absent friends. Most recent amongst those long term stalwarts of Tee Set to depart was Clyde Wickiser who was a part of Tee Set from its first years right up until he passed away earlier this year.
Such was Clyde’s influence and support of Tee Set, President Roger Finnie then announced we would award a new trophy each year at the Anniversary event in honour of Clyde. The trophy is to be awarded to our Clubman of the Year and given his great contribution behind the scenes and iron-man support in turning out to over 75% of all events for many years, Roger announced VP Ric Wymer as the first recipient of the Clyde Wickiser Memorial Trophy.
After accepting the award, Ric offered a few more reflections on his memories of Clyde and we all agreed he may even have been a little emotional in accepting the award…. Congratulations Ric and well deserved as we all recognize and appreciate everything you do to make sure we play week in and week out.
With the club having run out of beer (!!?) early into the prize-giving we recognized that the wine ready for presentation as prizes was the only alcohol left in the room so we moved swiftly on to the rest of the agenda; starting with the cake cutting so it could be shared around whilst the winners on the day were recognized.
However, this was not before we recognized the great work of the Yayasan HOGS Group which we support with a donation on behalf of all Tee Set members. This year, being our 35th Anniversary we presented HOGS with a cheque for Rp15j. This was followed by a whip round which added another Rp4.1j meaning around 5-6 operations could be supported on children with Cleft lip by HOGS.
Nearest the Brenda was won by Wayne LaRosee and Nearest the Pin by Efsi Hayati whilst our long Hitters with the 1980’s driver were Livia Rivaiova and Edwin Thieroff. All received a bottle of wine for their efforts.
We also recognized the iron-men efforts in anchoring their teams off the tee with King Tirto winning the prize for Handicaps >=30 and Matthew Powell the prize overall with their contributions of 4 and 10 drives, respectively.
On the team prizes we had the remarkable return of all 18 teams having a gross score of under par – last year it was 10 teams from 22! Therefore the team prizes came down to the odd missed putt or unlucky bounce with less than a stroke covering most of the prize places for 1v2 and for 3rd place.
Best Gross on the day with a score of 65 went to Alcoholics Not Anonymous comprising of VP Bill Lloyd, Ken Runyon, Paul Daud and Don Duttlinger. 3rd place on the day was the team of 5, with one of its members having turned up late and slotted in, of Mission Impossible: Wina Nugraha, Efsi Hayati, Lis Wymer, VP Ric Wymer and Albert Arcenas. Second by a whisker was Ball Away: Manfred Borer, Simon Caduff, Stefan Thiele and Gary Mond with the winners being The Internationals: anchored by last year’s runners up Pieter and Dede Nielen-Groen and joined by Axel Hertzke and Jaco Zaayman this year.
With the prize giving done, The President looked forward to another good event next year, turned on his 1980’s music and joined everybody left in enjoying the prize giving wine as we partied the evening away.
