The Day
Tee Set’s year traditionally finishes on the last week-end of November and we returned to Matoa Nasional last Sunday to celebrate the end of the golfing year, to crown our Champions for 2018 and to recognize all of the contributions which go into running a successful society.
A full house of 112 registrations, 107 players making it to the first tee – up from 87 last year, more countries represented, more women players and more sponsors supporting us all show that Tee Set is in good health despite the changes in the economy which has seen many departures in recent years.
A lot goes in to holding the Championships with the day being the culmination of around 6 months of effort and so we’d like to offer a special thanks to a number of people. Firstly, to our sponsors: Asian Tigers, Asia Serv, Hot-Hed, JS Luwansa Hotel, Kojo, Loesche, San Miguel, Schenck Process, Bintang Sub-sea, Samson Tiara, Mayapada Hospitals and Fugro who contributions ensure Tee Set has the wherewithal to hold its Championships and put on a day worthy of our end of season event.
The Tee Set Championship Committee put in many hours of work preparing for the day and a special thank you to VP Ric Wymer, Web-guy Keith Miller, VP Bill Lloyd, The Singing President Craig Ewers, Coach Ken Runyon and the ever smiling Richard Mau for their tireless contributions. A lot of this work comes together just before the day, and a special mention to Lis Wymer, Ledy and Mike Riley and Matoa’s Weny and Putri who all came down on Saturday to help Ric with the set-up.
Matoa have been a great partner to us over the years and whilst there were some challenges on the course condition in recent weeks, partly exasperated by the heavy rain, Reza and his team made a special effort to present the course in the best condition possible. All the Matoa staff were invested to ensure the day went smoothly and our appreciation was acknowledged to all of the team there.
Lastly, a thank you to all the Tee Setters who came along and supported the day and ensured we celebrated in some style until dark.
Being the event it is, the Championships brings together a diverse cross-section of the Tee Set universe. VP Ric Wymer and President Roger Finnie both played over 4o of our 53 events this year whilst newcomers last week, Matthias Coessens and Aurelie Neufkens were back to experience the Championship as their 2nd event. Norman and Lina Bunter timed their visit from the UK to join us and former President Peter Reichlmeier was a notable welcome back along with several other players including Helmy de Korver, Rod Ritson and Jakob Sorensen.
Our sponsors were out in force and were there to also help welcome newcomers Per Sorensen, Marcel van Til and Joe Cortez who all chose a great week to come for the first time – this happens once a year guys just FYI!
Details and the awards for our annual play are below as are the results of the day.
The day itself, saw the course open at 5am and first there were President Roger Finnie, straight from the St Andrew’s Ball held on Saturday night and a more rested James Ross. Upon registration, Mayapada Hospitals were offering a free mini-medical check up which was popular although the results did give some food for thought. Having found lockers, cart partners and starting holes, everybody gathered for breakfast and refreshments. After the photo, we headed down to find our carts and stock up on further refreshments for the course and our shot-gun start.
Despite some thunderstorms threatening mid-round and which gave a good reason to get out the new Tee Set umbrella from the goodie bag, we stayed dry and so the only hiccup in play was the accommodation of too many additional groups even after a full shot-gun. This caused some delay as people turned from 18 to 1 but with the Hot-Hed van offering hot dogs, the club-house drinks supply ably managed by the Star Deli team and VP Bill Lloyd, hopping on his broken foot and therefore unable to play, roaming the course with mobile refreshments, all were able to stay well fed and watered during the day.
After changing, we gathered in the function room where after lunch, President Roger Finnie open proceedings by welcoming everybody and shared some high-lights of the Tee Set year.
Our thank you’s and acknowledgements above were followed by former President Peter Reichlmeier saying a few words in memory of long-time Tee Setters Clyde Wickiser and Ivan Byriel who both passed away this year and raising a toast to absent friends. Peter then raised a toast to Tee Set following which the cake was cut and distributed as dessert to all assembled.
With the Tee Set Presidency running Championship to Championship, Keith Miller had distributed a request for nominations but with none received and incumbent President Roger Finnie happy to continue, the existing committee was re-elected serve again for 2018/19 year.
With scoring done, a door prize lucky draw was made for gifts donated by Asian Tigers, Mayapada Hospitals and Walter Jardine before we proceeded to the prize giving.
Following the prize giving, we gave a present to Secretary Brenda Mayland in appreciation of all her hard work and contributions to Tee Set and said a fond farewell to the departing David Baglivo who leaves Jakarta shortly to return to the USA.
With the formalities completed, the presentations were closed and we partied the rest of the afternoon away to the sounds of the Singing President and his band.
The Play
Prize giving on the day recognized both the play during the year as well as the results of Sunday’s round for the Tee Set Championship. Tee Set returned mixed results in its matches against other societies: the Battle Royale Cup again went to the home side as Par 5 won at Handara whilst Tee Set prevailed at the 3rd time of asking in the Juergen Degert Cup versus DOGs at Rancamaya; in the Inter-League Tee Set were wooden spoonists but contributed significantly to the revival of JIL in 2018.
In our internal competitions, the inaugural weekend trip to Surabaya for the Finna Cup was a great success with Fernando Gaggino winning the 2 day eclectic event whilst the Tee Set World Cup was again won the Ladies from Indonesia. We recognized our Monthly Medalists and Eclectic winners from the year and captured those present for prosperity.
Tee Set also recognizes the best play from all rounds played over the course of the year. President Roger Finnie took home both the Low Average Putts and Low Average Net trophies whilst Jeff Landau won the Low Average Gross trophy. Jeff was presented his trophy along side last year’s winner Simon Reynolds since he was not present in 2017 to collect it.
Our skill prize winners on the day saw Tim Knight and Efsi Hayati take home the long drive honours and receive a bottle of wine each. Whilst nobody claimed the hole in one prizes sponsored by Matoa and Mayapada Hosptials, JS Luwansa sponsored 2 nearest the pins which were won by Leon Bivolaru and Matthias Coessens.
No fines this week so a week off for the Tee Set dress up bag but we did still recognize our usual skill prizes. First Birdie went to Lina Bunter, 1st Sandy to Nuri Puzey, First Par for handicaps >=30 to Renny Sperry and joining the ladies was Brad Burness for Low Putts.
Low Net prizes went to Jari Ratu in A Grade, Matt Otto on a count-back in B Grade and Dede Nielen-Groen in C Grade.
Lastly, we recognized our major champions for 2018. The Match-Play Championship and Ric Wymer Trophy winner was Jens Roestel who defeated 2017 Tee Set Champion Santi Miller in the final. The George Bevege Trophy winner for Low Gross on the day went to Ken Runyon for his gross 75 whilst just edging him out for the overall Champion was Richard Mau who shot an excellent net 64.
Congratulations to all our winners. The day’s summary result is here and the many, many photos of the day can be seen here.

Well covered Roger although the reference to Halliburton had me guessing for a minute. Can’t wait for next year 🙂
