Sunday 2nd December 2018 Gading Raya

The Day

With the 2017-18 Tee Set golfing year brought to a close last week, this week saw us open the new year with a visit to Gading Raya. Although usually a quiet week in the Tee Set calendar, the popularity of the course and its proximity to many Tee Setters’ homes ensured we had a healthy turnout of 33 players despite there being a few weary bodies amongst us as both the DOGS end of year party and the JIPL finals were held the day before.

All in all it was an excellent Sunday of relaxed golf with the weather being dry, the course playing well despite the recent heavy rains and the Gading Raya staff ensuring we got off on time & round with little hold up. This meant the first groups were finished in just over 4 hours and we could all change and complete the prize-giving by just after 5pm, leaving plenty of time to enjoy some food and refreshments together and still be home early.

Being the first event of our 2018-19 golfing year, newly re-elected President Roger Finnie was given the “honour” of hitting the first tee shot and he was relieved to see it go down the middle given the watching gallery of Tee Setters and with VP Ric Wymer being on hand with his camera just in case….

We welcomed our first newcomer of the year, Matthew Scheitlin and the only notable welcome back was Matt McGowan after 12 weeks.

A thank you to Ric and Lis for managing the scoring and prize giving on the day and photos can be found here as usual.

The Play

Although not a complicated lay-out, the tricky greens and some long carries to the red tees ensured we also recorded our first fines of the year too. Detlef Bluemke was our  inaugural fine of the year with a skirt on his first hole and he was joined by Hakim Moui and Mike Webb in enjoying a choice from the Tee Set dress up collection. Most strokes went to Matt Otto for his 13 on a hole whilst Monster Putter was Gary Mond after his 43 putts.

Most improved was a 3 way tie with Detlef recovering his fine and being joined by Joe Callahan and Matthias Coessens in improving by 6 strokes on the back 9. 1st par for handicaps =>30 went to Lina Bunter and Stefan Thiele for their efforts on hole 3 and First Sandy to Laurie O’Connor for his effort on hole 2.

Master of the greens was Eric Mary who navigated them with only 28 putts whilst First Birdie, also on hole 3, went to Doug McQuater.

Although not turning his good drive on hole 1 into a simple par, Roger Finnie kept out of trouble and returned a 79 for Low Gross whilst our Low Net honours went to Fernando Gaggino  in A Grade (68), Arthur Mallari in B Grade (68) and Kim Pham in C Grade (65).

Detailed results are here and congratulations to all our winners.

Xmas Charity Drive: Lombok and Palu

Whilst the initial news has passed and many valuable contributions have been made to support the main relief efforts, news from families of Tee Setters with direct connections to these 2 locations report that there are many people who have lost all of their belongings and are therefore short of some basic necessities including clothing.

Therefore, under the initiative of Santi Miller, we would like to ask you to go through your wardrobes and find any serviceable old clothes and bedding which you would be happy to donate. Be conscious of what would be practical given the environment – no high heels for example – but otherwise all donations are welcome. We are asking for both adult and children’s clothing plus bedding but not food, toys etc…

Donations can be brought the Tee Set events to be held over the next 3 weeks (BSD, Cengkareng & Riverside) and passed to Santi or Roger Finnie. If you wish to donate but cannot make these events then please contact Roger, Santi or Keith Miller and we will give you an address where they can be sent to be added to those collected on each of the next 3 Sundays.

Santi and Jane will be going through all the donations and creating shipments to be donated to families in both Lombok and Palu for the New Year. Thank you in advance for all your donations to support these worthy efforts.
