Sunday 6th January 2019: Gading Raya

The Day

Our first game of the New Year saw us return to Gading Raya where we welcomed 45 Tee Setters on what was a dry and sunny day. It was an opportunity for several players who had just flown in to get out and stretch their legs to help get over the jet lag; none more so than birthday boy Jens Roestel and Shawn Berg who had arrived in from Germany and Canada, respectively, the evening before. Good to see everyone out after the New Year.

Although hoping for a smooth day, we had a couple of curve balls to deal with in the pre-round arrangements with firstly an accident on the toll delaying the arrival of the VP of Almost Everything along with our secretary and then the caddy master sending out some of the groups fully 45 minutes early despite 1/3 of the group had not yet arrived.

Whilst the administration coped as normal, this meant there was long gap between the front and back of the field and so the post-round gathering was a little quieter than normal. After the scoring was collated, several headed over the DOCKS where we enjoyed some food and drinks kindly laid on by Jens to celebrate his birthday.

4 newcomers welcomed on the day and a warm Tee Set welcome was given to Tim Evershed, Dominic Wong, Jack Harkness and Ben Jenkins. We also gave a warm welcome back to Kathy Scalabre and Arnold Castillon who were both back after 7 months away. We look forward to welcoming you all again soon.

Thank you’s on the day to Jens for his hospitality, Beby for managing the scoring, Craig Edwards for the registrations and VP Ric Wymer for almost everything else needed to make the day run smoothly. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

Whilst relatively flat, Gading Raya has some tricky rough, soft fringes and undulating greens which can reward good play and catch-out the unwary. The scores today reflecting these characteristics as they do during most visits.

Monster Putter was a close run thing with Tim Evershed just pipping Tim Henssen with 44 putts on the day. Tim however was not to escape as he was fined for his skirt along with VP Ric Wymer and Stefan Thiele. Unsurprisingly perhaps, Shawn Berg ran out of steam on the back 9 which included a 10 to share Most Strokes along with Tan Chee Hua. Most Improved went to Nick Gleeson who tightened his game up to come home 8 strokes better whilst Kim Pham secured first Par for handicaps >=30 with her effort on hole 4.

On the skill prizes, First Sandy went to Lorenzo Marengo for his effort on hole 1 where Chris Chipman also secured First Birdie. Completing the trio was Keith Gorman for his Low Putts of 27.

Low Gross was awarded to both President Roger Finnie and Tee Set Champion Richard Mau as their gross scores of 80 could not be separated by a simple count-back. In the Low Net category, Gading Raya specialist Fernando Gaggino was back to secure A Grade after a net 69 with Arthur Mallari (67) and Kathy Scalabre (70) taking Grades B & C, respectively.

Congratulations to all our winners.

Although we made a late change to play our last game of 2018 there just 2 weeks ago, our previously planned scheduling sees us make a quick return to the excellent Emeralda. We have requested to play the River/Lake combination to mix it up from our last visit.

With its 27 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer you can walk the footsteps of legends whilst enjoying one of the more picturesque courses we will play all year.

The rate is Rp950k including cart and with an 11.30am tee time we will be able to enjoy fully the day and not be too late returning home. To come and join in all the fun of a Tee Set Sunday please sign up here.

Tee Set Match-Play 2019

The 2019 Tee Set Match Play Championship is now open for registrations.  Games will start the first week of February.  We will hold a drawing for the placement round at the monthly medal on 27 January 2019.

Please submit your details on the form here to join the competition to try to wrest the Ric Wymer Cup from current Champion, Jens Roestel.

Tee Set Schedule 2019

Your Tee Set committee has put together a strong schedule for 2019 and the details are here for you to peruse and mark any key highlights into your calendar. Three items of note:

  1. It is fluid so please check it from time to time as we make changes based on feedback from courses on competition days or other potential complications to our expected smooth rounds. Your President is happy to receive feedback on potential new courses to be added to the schedule should slots open up during the year;
  2. There are 2 Thompson Cup events which fall on Saturdays and are not part of the Tee Set official schedule but given many of us play in it, its been added it to the schedule for information;
  3. In addition to the week-end at Rancamaya when we have our BBQ and match with The DOG’s, we are coordinating 3 other potential over-night events. Firstly, a visit to Gunung Geulis in July. Secondly, following on from the success of our inaugural visit in 2018, a return to Finna in Surabaya and thirdly, a new trip to Merapi, Jogjakarta. The dates of these latter 2 events are to be scheduled but please look out for more details as we fine-tune them with our tour masters, Craig Ewers and Axel Hertzke.
