2019 Tee Set Match Play Final
With 2018 Champion Jens Roestel on hand to support the finalists, Tee Set Inter-League Captain Simon Oxley and President Roger Finnie were back this week to battle out round 2 of the Match Play Final after last week’s draw.
Early skirmishes saw Roger take a 2 up lead which by the turn had grown to 4 up but a thrilling run of pars and birdies on the back 9 saw Simon pull himself back to only 1 down by the time they reached hole 16. An exchange of birdies on 16 and 17 saw the pair head down the 18th with Roger still 1 up and visions of a repeat of last week’s draw in both players minds. However, this week a steady par on the last saw Roger take the Ric Wymer Trophy with a 2up win. Commiserations to our losing finalist, Simon Oxley and congratulations to both players for a well played match which ultimately took 36 holes to settle.
At the prize giving, our winner, Roger Finnie, was presented the Ric Wymer Match Play Trophy by the man himself and 2018’s champion.
The Day
Sunday was a rearranged game having advanced our visit to the challenging Riverside course by a week after Emeralda were unable to confirm a suitable time for our scheduled visit there.
A thank you to GM Peng Siong and the team at Riverside for making sure we had an enjoyable visit with the course in excellent condition and the bright sunshine ensuring we had a great day on the fast fairways and greens.
Our mini shot gun start saw the 29 Tee Setters head out as scheduled at 12pm and steady progress saw us finish in good time albeit sadly having lost a couple of our contingent to illness part of the way round. Hope you are feeling better today guys.!
5 newcomers this week and a warm Tee Set welcome was given to Richard Berg, Timo Landgren, Tapio Jarvenpaa, Warut Waramit ad Leith Day. A warm welcome back to Dan Brod after 2 years and Michal Lukasik after 4 months.
Many thanks to VP Ric Wymer for managing all the registrations and scoring with the President being somewhat distracted with the Match Play final and to Lis Wymer for her assistance in the prize giving. Photos of the day are here.
The Play
With the course playing fast those hitting it straight got some good roll but anything wayward would be punished by some tricky holes and unforgiving bushes along side the fairways. The challenge Riverside presents was seen in the results where only 4 players beat net par this week.
The fast fairways were not enough to help our lone skirt on the day with Michael Mueller relishing his time in the spotlight once all dressed up. No Monster putter this week with the greens playing so well but Most Strokes was picked up by newcomer, Warut Waramit. Warut was to recover his fine however with Most Improved.
First Sandy went to Samret Raungrit and First Birdie to Joseph D’Cruz whilst Low Putts went to Christine Lie.
First Par handicaps => 30 went to Mike Riley whilst GM Peng Siong took home Low Gross. Low Net honours went to Roger Finnie, Arnold Castillon and Michal Lukasik although an initial input error saw Michael Mueller stepping up for the photo – I trust you sorted out the beers gentlemen later on :- ) but in the meantime a quick edit of the photo to ensure we have the right faces in the picture….
Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Results riverside 061019
Next Up: Gading Raya Sunday 13th October 2019 11.30am
This week sees us at Gading Raya as the second of our late changes in schedule sees us head back to one of Tee Set’s favourite courses. With an excellent course and good facilities being complemented by relatively easy access for many Tee Setters, this week promises a great Sunday of golf.

Lots of good reasons therefore to sign up here and we look forward to seeing all who can join us on Sunday
Election of the President: Candidates required
The Tee Set President is appointed by a vote of attendees each Championship and serves to the conclusion of the following year’s event. With current President Roger Finnie having served 2 1/2 years already, the Committee are seeking candidates for President for 2019/20.
We would therefore like ask for nominations for the position of President for 2019/20 and also any expressions of interest to join the Committee. Please send your nominations to our master of the electoral process, Keith Miller at: keith.steuart.miller@gmail.com
Nominations will close 1 week before the Championships (17th November) to enable us to prepare the necessary voting slips and thank you to Keith for again assisting the Committee in coordinating the nominations and voting.
Finally, and as always, if nominating some-one other than yourself, please ensure the nominee is willing to stand!
