The Day
The last round of the Jakarta Inter-league 2019 Season saw 68 golfers turn out at Riverside on what was a beautiful golfing day; 34 of them joining the Tee Set regular event. The course was playing in perfect condition, still running fairly fast but freshened up with a little rain over the past week.
The day kicked off with Bloody Mary’s and other refreshments put on by the JIL Committee thanks to the coordination and sponsorship of Asia Serv and Jack Calcote. After the round, we had our usual end of season BBQ kindly coordinated by Tin Cups’ Captain Iris Rothenberg. A warm thank you to both of them for the arrangements.
In addition to the 3 matches being played with JIL, we had a further 5 flights of golfers. Unfortunately, play was a little slow as we were teeing off after a morning competition but we were all finished in good time to enjoy the end of season BBQ, recognize the Tee Set winners of the day and the overall winners of the JIL competition.
A warm Tee Set welcome back to Phil Mckean (who predated the data-base and therefore fell into the newcomers bracket), and both Christain Engstrom (254 weeks) and Jess Kindler (84 weeks) who are just a little more regular!. This week was also the last week of the current visit for Mike Taylor and we wish him a safe return home – see you all again soon.
Many thanks to VP Ric Wymer for taking care of the scoring and presentations as well as to Jens Roestel and Simon Oxley who assisted with the administration on the day.
The Play
A few misunderstandings from the reporting on the score sheets as we had no skirt on the day, nor any eagles…. and as our Most Strokes and Monster Putter winner, Oliver Fritz, had already departed, our Treasurer was to finish the day empty handed. On his last round before heading home, Mike Taylor put in a sterling effort on his back nine to win Most Improved. Lis Wymer and Graham Parsonage shared First Birdie whilst Jari Antikainen had Low Putts and Brett Shields 1st Sandy.
Continuing a run of form, Roger Finnie took home Low Gross whilst our Low Net winners on the day were Santi Miller, Jens Roestel and Timo Karonen.
Congratulations to our winners and the detailed results are here: Riverside Results 17-11-19
In the JIL presentations, a warm vote of thanks was given to Peng Siong and his team at Riverside as well as to all the Team Captains and Committee who ensured the season went smoothly. A further warm appreciation to Iris and Jack for ensuring everyone was well fed and watered during the party.
Tee Set under the leadership of Captain Simon Oxley had a much improved JIL season, ultimately finishing 2nd on the table after last year’s wooden spoon. The mantle of the wooden spoon was taken up by Sandbaggers whilst Tin Cups again proved too strong and retained the Cup won in 2018 – metaphorically at least as the actual cup seems to have gone walk-about and we had to use a model-double for the occasion.
