Tee Set Championships Sunday 24th November 2019

The Day

This is the day when our golfing year comes to the fore in Tee Set calendar with all of the year’s winners and contributors being recognized, our sponsors and committee thanked, our champions crowned and most importantly, a great party shared as we celebrate another year of camaraderie and friendship. Thanks to those Tee Setters who had signed up for the Championships but could not make it informing us in time to accommodate our waiting list, we had 109 players signed up on Saturday night…. and we had 109 players turn up on Sunday morning which was a record turn out for any Tee Set event; much to the satisfaction of everyone who had put so much effort into organizing it.

As usual VP Ric Wymer and his team of helpers had been at Matoa for most of Saturday afternoon making sure everything was ready for the dawn arrival of all the players. Once bags were dropped and registration confirmed, players were able to choose their shirt colour, a new adaptation since the committee couldn’t agree on a single colour this year(!), take a short medical check up kindly provided by Mayapada Healthcare and enjoy breakfast whilst catching up. Around the room was displayed all the statistics of the year, put together as usual by our web-guy Keith Miller.

With everyone expected turning up, there were very few movements in the pre-determined flights meaning we were able to head out onto the course in good time for our group photo and the shot-gun start at 7am.

Our day was blessed with great weather and so despite the high turn-out we were able to move round relatively smoothly. For those in need of sustenance, the Star Deli girls were roving the course with the drinks cart and Hot-Hed Hot Dogs were being served at the Clubhouse through out the round.

After the round, Keith and Brenda collected all the scores whilst everyone changed and got ready for lunch and the prize-giving.

Proceedings commenced as usual with our Commissioner of Elections, Keith Miller calling for a vote of thanks to out-going President Roger Finnie and all the Committee. Keith also advised the room that he had not been inundated with a rush of new candidates for the coming year and so by a show of hands, Roger would be dobbed in to serve for another year. The motion passed with a solitary objection, Roger’s partner!! VP’s Ric Wymer and Bill Lloyd then recognized our sponsors: Asian Tigers, Asia Serv, Hot-Hed, JS Luwansa Hotel, Kojo, San Miguel, Schenck Process, LF Logistics, Bina Nusantara Perkasa, Bintang Sub-sea, Samson Tiara, Mayapada Hospitals and Fugro as well as all the Matoa staff for their hard efforts on the day. With the week being Keith’s birthday, he was then asked to blow out the candles on the celebratory cake provided by Richard Mau and his team at JS Luwansa.

We had 4 newcomers on the day and  Tribhuvan Singh, Steve Vette, Nick Mclean and Marvin Abao were all given a warm Tee Set welcome. The welcome backs were numerous and several well over 2 years so in the interests of proceedings we welcomed them all back en masse. Our long term members in attendance were then called up and those with 20+ years presented with a bottle of wine as a thank you: Anthony King, Mick Mongold, Joe Alchi, Manoj Mishra and Alistair Livingston.

Our average winners for the year’s play were then recognized with Low Gross Tim Knight, Low Average Putts Richard Mau and Low Average Net Roger Finnie all being given a bottle of wine. A photo call was then made for the Tee Set Inter-league team, our Eclectic and Monthly Medal winners to recognize their success during the year.

We conducted our door prize draw before the first major trophy was awarded by Ric Wymer to the Match Play Champion of the year, Roger Finnie, and the runner’s-up prize to Simon Oxley.

The results of the day were then presented as below and with official proceedings closed, the party kicked off.  A few hardy souls made it to dark with former President Pascal Bekaert and Web-guy Keith Miller last seen tucking into some cheese and wine.

Thank you to everyone who made the day run so smoothly and the many, many photos of the day are here.

The Play

Being a regular Sunday we had our regular call up for skirts and so whilst they were spared a fine, Brad Burness, King Tirto, Mark Johnson and Paul Daud all got to parade in front of the assembled masses. Most Improved on the day went to James Ross and First Par Handicaps >=30 went to Timo Karonen. Anthony King took Low Putts and fellow playing partner Kees de Korver First Sandy whilst Doug McQuater and Emil Marcelo shared First Birdie.

Defending Tee Set Champion Richard Mau shot an excellent 73 gross to win the Low Gross Championship and the George Bevege Trophy. A snafu saw Jari Antikainen awarded the Tee Set Champions Trophy but after he grciously pointed out the mistake, the scorers were left with a 3-way tie for the Championship. The count-back went all the way down to the last 3 holes (as played) and finally Mike Riley emerged as the winner just pipping Laruie O’Connor and Eric Mary in the runners-up spots.

Congratulations to all our winners on the day and detailed results are here: TSC 2019 Full results listing for those wishing to check out all the scores.
