TeeSet Annual 4 Club Challenge at Pondok Cabe

The elite of the elite turned out for TeeSet’s annual 4 club event. Then there was me. Players were seen practising their putting with wedges, woods and rescues. The clubhouse banter was all about what you were carrying in your bag today. Most had a drive and a putter I had neither of these. Different is special.

It was a wasted exercise having a caddy today to lug your 4 clubs around but we must support the local economy. I did draw the line at driving around. My caddy was the height of the golf buggy so at times it was strange to see, what looked like, a self-propelled buggy heading down the fairway. He was short and if he sat on Steve’s caddy’s shoulders the pair of them would still be way shorter than me. There was some last minute jockeying of the flights and then we were off. The groups off the back 9 had a couple of slower movers in the front of them but they were comfortably slow, and speed of play was reasonable. Choosing between 4 clubs kills a bit of the time wasting I dare say.

Tom was long and strong off the tees and Steve was whacking a nice 3 wood out there, me with my rescue being the poor cousin. I definitely came to this shooting match with not enough fire power, but the rescue doubled well as a putter. A nice Scotty Cameron is available on EBay. Our 4 ball played consistent golf but luck was not our side with both Tom and Steve lipping out or leaving it on the edge of the cup on several occasions. Rosita provided the rap dancing moves on the putting greens and general words of motherly advice. The President was severely reprimanded for his coarse language. Rosita can hear a pin drop.

The groups behind us were never too faraway and may need to be moved back in the future as once more Diarmuid was whacking balls at the President, like an Irish Kneecapper in heat. We can add Viboon to the assassins list, he managed to get his projectile within 5 metres of the President. Surely the longest slice goes to Simone who was seen playing the first hole over past the green by the drain on the 3rd hole. That is a slice above the rest. Whilst we were ducking and weaving on the back 9, the players off the front 9 seemed to find conditions more favourable with Velma, Richard, Roger and Andrew all reveling in the challenges on hand at Pondok Cabe. Andrew was distracted by a late arriving caddy and his game deteriorated but his smile didn’t. Talking of caddy distractions, Tom had the best of the day. Having just walked off the 7th with a handy par and having been amongst the stableford points throughout the day he arrives at the 8th. After a drive that was a little bit disappointing the caddy heads off in search of the ball. I see the caddy find the ball I then see the caddy pick up the ball and cross the creek and place it. Tom also saw it and asked him what the puck he was doing eh. The thunder and rain might have made it hard for the caddy to hear so he was asked again. The caddy then re-traced his footsteps where he laid it in another incorrect position. Tom’s steam levels were rising and rain was evaporating off him in clouds of steam. God only knows what the caddy was thinking but it certainly ruined a pretty good round that Tom was putting together.

The day had started hot and it just got hotter over the first couple of hours a sure sign that rain was not far off. Sure enough the wind increased and the clouds began to gather and we were hit with the first drops on our 12th hole. It came and went and the bumbershoots came out and went back into their sleeves. But with 3 holes to go it had truly set in and this is where the chaff is separated from the wheat. The two flights behind sought shelter and worse, several players were found to be made of icing sugar and disappeared in the rain. The rest of us shouldered the brollies and soldiered on getting pars and triples on the way back to the clubhouse.

The survivors of the 2 flights off the front 9 were already into their cups on our arrival and the wait for the final 2 flights to finish took a while. Finally they arrived and we could get to the winners.

The Golfer in Pink gets the pink notes. Velma with a pretty handy 40 Stableford points the 4 Club Challenge Winner. Well done.

Roger pinches the low gross with a pretty handy 83.

A very deft chip in birdie by Steve gets him the money. Well played.

Second in the Stableford was Andrew and takes home the inaugural award for second place in the 4 club challenge, The Presidential Butt.
