Golfing at Glorious Gading Raya

Finally the men were back in their own locker room complete with new lockers, sauna and whirlpool. I took a moment, after testing the new urinals, to check out the pool, which recommend the use of the urinals first. Anyways no time for a dip but it did look rather flash. I think I will lavish myself in the locker rooms longer next time. Hmmm does that sound a bit strange? Anyways an early finishing Korean golfer hustled past me on the way to lavish himself in the new spa, his footwear got caught on the bottom step’s slip-proof matting and his head hit the top step’s slip-proof matting, deadening the sound of impact. No one was injured just some pride hurt from the bloke head butting steps.

A neat 9 flights lined up today at Gading Raya. Adhe was there in position taking golf fees and offering TeeSetters the chance to join the TeeSet Match Play Championship which starts shortly. So sign up ASAP. There were a few last minute changes and re-arranges as we had an off again on again golfer player and one or two Sunday morning sign ups. Richard Mau was causing a commotion in the TeeSet ladies section with the distribution of a few golf shirts. Indonesians love, tea, coffee, cigarettes and free stuff. Westerners you could probably add beer/alcohol to that list. New Year greetings were being extended as the members welcomed each other back after the holiday season. The weather looked fine there did not seem to be too many others besides TeeSetters in the clubhouse so a fast round was on the cards.

At 11.10 we were informed that we could start, by start they mean locate your bag and cart and head to your designated starting hole. I was 3rd group off on the 1st and the first group teed off a bit after 11.30. Somehow or another Vijay had worked his way into the first flight off the 10th, somethings never cease to amaze me. Vijay in the first flight, astaga! Once we were away the first holes were a bit slow as the groups settled into a rhythm. The first 9 passed in an uneventful manner, except for a stiff breeze that aided and frustrated depending on which direction you were traveling.

Tom had been punching holes in the sky off the tee box with his 3 wood for most of the round and mother nature had had enough by the time we had finished the 11th and down she came. A drenching 10 minute shower, that was followed by intermittent showers of less intensity and duration. Hoping to make up for lost time the President sent a long drive down the 13th so long it had the caddies upset that the group in front were still in range. As much as we explained that it was at the President’s discretion as to when he tee’s off, this fell upon deaf caddy ears and he was frog marched off by the caddies to apologise. Jens said “nice drive but it was closer to Anna” who said ” you were a long way short of danger”. Anyways, caddy rebellion crushed we moved on. There were some truly special moments of golf in my flight today but they are best left unmentioned in order to protect friendships and reputations. Tom did finish with a fine par. We got home in a tad over 4 hours with time lost to rain. The lads and lasses on the other side of the course were not so lucky with Gading sneaking a half dozen extra flights in as they made the swing adding nearly an hour extra to their game.

There was some fine golf played today with impressive scores being found in most flights. Standouts with some cracking scores were Richard, Max, Rosie, Aljosja, Axel and Simone. In all we had 16 players play to or better their handicaps. Ricard has found a deep vein of golfing form. Claudio, we expect to see his handicap drop dramatically over the next few rounds as he works to getting an official handicap.

Off to the winners circle

Aljosja with 43 points. A very happy man. He and his flight had a great round and celebrated with a few frothies afterwards. Well done with 43 points.

Axel gets the low gross lolly money with a very nice 78 gross.

Max gets the prize for the first birdie. Congratulations.

Joe takes low putts with 28. Well done on the slow Gading Greens.
