This wimpy nature is thankfully not present on TeeSet. We bear our crosses like true sportsmen and recognise the jest and light heartedness that is prevalent through our golfing community. More about crosses later let’s get into Sunday’s game.
The cream always rises to the top and last Sunday was no exception. Present were last year’s Match Play Champion and Runner-up also. Some of the finest Italian golfers to ever play with TeeSet were there. Jovial Jude, smiling as usual like a Cheshire Cat was there. The ever competative Holger was there, wearing the latest in comfort hybrid golf type shoes from NB. These may catch on, curently NBing as typing. The finest of the fine, the guys and gals you can rely on in trying times. The golfers that can drag their sorry hungover arses out of bed on an overcast Sunday and get out and play golf.
After the rain that Jakarta had been hit with over the last few weeks the course was in reasonable conditions a bit of scurvy on a few greens being the only concern but the pins were placed well away from those areas. The open expanses of Riverside were a blessing after JGC the day before and the first slice of the day missed the tree line by metres and only found a bunker. The 3 ball I was with, Patrick and Arnold, took it in turns to play good golf with quite a few pars across the first 15 holes the highlights being a great par by Arnold on the 3rd, one of the courses more challenging holes and myself and Patrick both getting 7s on the index 1 hole in spite of incurring 2 penalty strokes each. Basically crap golf with some good shots and putting at the end of the 7th.
Ominous clouds were seen gathering in the south and the group in front of us, who had been making great pace suddenly slowed. The sky grew dark the wind began to blow and the golfers knew just what to do. Pick up the pace heading to the 16th the rains came. This fool wanted to tee off but wiser heads prevailed and to the shelter shed we went. The heavens then opened and the golf carts could barely be seen just metres away. Weather radar painted a grim picture. Having hashed in this area for years I knew how hard and long it can rain here so finally conceded a return to the club house after 30 minutes in the shed. Awaiting us were Roberto, Alessandro, Irene and Diarmuid already eating and drinking and looking like they had been there for 30 minutes. In their defense when the storm hit they were about to tee off on the 13th so the club house is but a pitching wedge away.
The rain did not abate for another 40 minutes by which time we were deep into our second jug of beer (best value for beer at Riverside). AN hour or so later with the aforementioned foursome having departed and our 3rd jug having departed also the warriors of Jude, JP, Holger, Claudio emerged from the gloom on the 18th green. There had been a hard fought tussle between JP, Jude and Holger fighting for low gross, low net. Unfortunately there could only be two winners today and the weather was not one of them. JP mastered the elements with low net and Jude took low gross. A couple of quick beers and it was time to stick the car on auto-pilot and head back to Jakarta another day’s golf in the bag
A big thanks to Peng for allowing Teeset to play at the contrated price albeit with a small turnout. As a note to TeeSetters you are under no obligation to play except when you want, but the club uses its numbers to negotiate very competattive weekend golf rates as do the DOGS. Our minimums are typically 24. If these numbers cannot be met the clubs reserve the right to jack the price, so your support is vital to continued cheap weekend golf.
