Next Up: Riverside, Sunday 9th November 2014

RiversideYes dear Tee Setter, we are up for the sublime Riverside course on Sunday when those who have not played there before are in for an absolute treat, while those who have will be just absolutely delighted to be back.

Located a bit of a drive off the Jagorawi Tol. the course is very far from a pushover and possessed of some pretty challenging holes but, even if it rips you apart as it has your scribe on several occasions, you will be deeply satisfied at having taken it on as you then take on a cold beer or two in its quite delightful clubhouse afterwards.

Green fees of a remarkably friendly 770,000 roops for this quality of course, 700,000 if we get 40 or more players so do make you sure your register by around the end of office hours tomorrow, Friday.

Adding no little interest to the day will be David Baglivo taking on Neil Mullins for the right to take on Peter Bush in the final of the Tee Set Match Play Championship; with the game of all three of them in great nick it should be a fine end to the match play season.

See ya down by the Riverside, down by the Riverside (stop it, ED) ….. Tee Set

Gading Raya, Sunday 2nd November 2014

windowThe Day

An excellent turnout of 44 Tee Setters found a stinking hot day with intensely high humidity at Gading Raya, a day which more than anything else made one feel equally intense gratitude to the guy who invented the golf cart – with only cloud saving the day in bringing some relief on the back nine.

Some consolation could also be taken from some amazingly short journeys from the South of Jakarta brought about by the completion of the JORR’s missing link, something which is making courses out to the West such a pleasure compared to the grinding homeward bound traffic that characterises the Jagorawi Tol.

Our usual flight arranger’s over-sleeping was mitigated by a sterling effort from Mel Meeds in matching up everyone into compatible groups. Only 6 revisions before tee time which is not bad for a group of 44, some of whom showed up very much on the late side, with Wina “Just in time” Nugraha living up to her nickname once again but the title of “Last to arrive” went to Aditya Chitharanjan who didn’t even come bearing an excuse. Wina was most indignant.

The check in system at Gading matches your score card to a bag tag number to a restaurant bill and everything else but, if the cards get mixed up inadvertently, as the Immediate Past President of Most Things was to find out, correct allocation of expenses goes out the window.

A very strict religious local member (aka “The Vicar”) will be asking questions of management Monday as to why he was billed 10 cans of beer and a massage on top of his green fees. In the realms of speculation of course but we have reason to suspect that Craig Binks may know the answer to that particular question.

The latest shirt version has proved very popular with another 7 pieces sold on the day and stocks nearly exhausted. We can hardly wait to see what the Championship shirt will look like but we guarantee it will be worth playing the Championship for the shirt alone.

Welcome backsJust one Newcomer to report in the shape of Tadashi Seki, enjoy your golf with us Seki, while we had a clear winner in the Welcome Back stakes with the visiting Tony Blackburn at a whisker under a year significantly out-distancing the near unpronounceable (to an Anglo Saxon tongue anyway) Aljosja van Dorssen.

Aljosja, based in the Land of the Clog, is an infrequent visitor and has yet to establish a handicap as he has only played with us three times in a little less 18 months and is worried that Ric will, as advertised, wipe out his oldest ones after 18 months – and that he will never get a handicap.

You can rely on the Immediate Past President of Most Things to do the right thing, Aljosja 🙂

Despite the heat and humidity on the first nine, for which we can hardly blame Gading, a great day overall on a great course in great condition. It will most definitely NOT be another two years before we return.

Something else that cannot be laid at the door of Gading Raya is the interesting journey home for those who listened to Michael Seabrook’s declaration that he knew of a miraculous new, traffic free and three lanes each way “East-West Passage” that he guaranteed would get anyone home who followed him even more quickly than they arrived.

A lengthy peregrination of the kampungs of eastern Tangerang later and the convoy of the gullible were almost back where they started. Michael is therefore the inaugural and worthy winner of the Tee Set’s newly established “Vasco da Garma” award – and receives a modest but not unattractive trophy which he gets to keep until anyone else can beat his amazing, erm, navigation skills.

The Play

Skill prizes

Some excellent rounds recorded today with none better than the one from Wina who has just missed out on Low Net so many times previously. This time she roped it in on the back of a very ordinary front 9 but matched George’s 8 strokes most improved on the back.

Neil Mullins game is sharpening up nicely since he went back to getting out of bed earlier in the day and today saw him take Low Gross with just 77 off the stick while there was nothing wrong with Jiro’s putter as he needed it just 26 times today in taking Low Putts.

Congratulations to Santi Miller who had a fine day shooting 79 off the stick and taking the 1st Eagle award by knocking an 85 meter shot onto the green where the ball bounced once and then ducked into the hole like it was returning home to Mama.

Craig Binks regularly gets his money back and uses a variety of devices to do it, today taking 1st Birdie on his very first hole played while Chris Chan waited a couple more holes to secure 1st Sandy. Richard Mau had some reason to be disgruntled as he made no less than FOUR sandies on the day – but all of them later than Chris’s 3rd hole achievement.

boobies

A healthy crop of five cross dressers taking a Skirt this week, your scribe amongst them. It was a close run thing but, as it was at the very first tee, the Immediate Past President of Most Things, in a notably uncollegiate act, snapped a piece of undeniable evidence. Bastard. Rather unusually, a 100% turnout of cross-dressers for the traditional photo.

skirts

Must have been something to do with the pressure of being secretary for the day once again with Brenda away on other work duties. “Hurry back Brenda, we miss you” was heard from more than one Tee Setter.

The quality of the greens made putting a pleasure today and meant that an unlucky Pieter Groen had to put his hands in his pocket for an amazingly low Monster Putter tally of just 39 putts. Three water balls on the 4th by Pulpy meant that insult was added to injury as he took Most Strokes on a hole for the fist time ever, again with a rather low 10 strokes.

More detailed, player by player results here while a bunch more photos of the day can be found on the Tee Set gallery.

2014 Tee Set Match Play Championship

Just one result today as Peter Bush steam rollered an out-of-sorts George “Pulpy” Beverage by 7 up with 5 to play!! Those three identical balls thrashed into the water on one hole of his unfortunate and rather uncharacteristic front nine of 51 (yes, fifty-one), to the general hilarity of his flight mates, didn’t help either.

Recovering to a more normal 41 on his back 9 was also of little help as George was to quickly run out of holes against an opponent playing very solidly to his handicap.

Peter goes on to play the winner of Neil Mullins and Dave Baglivo in the final. Hopefully this can all be wrapped up before Tee Set Championship day; there is just enough time.

2014 Tee Set Championship

The main news is that we are full up and only a personal impassioned plea to the organiser, the Immediate Past President of Most Thingsis going to get anyone else in.

Everything else is on target with a full roster of sponsors and everything material (solid and liquid) already to hand or on firm order.

Next Up

RiversideThere are not too many courses where we would accept a 12:30 start even from 1 & 10 – but a shot at playing the fabulous (and rather tough) Riverside course (and not Riverville which is where your scribe lives) and facilities has to be one of them.

Green fees of 770,00 are also a tad more than we are used to paying, apart from Jagowari (sic) of course, but well worth the “investment”. If we hit 40 players or more then there will be a certain amount of free beer flowing 🙂

Sign up here for what should be yet another great Tee Set Sunday.

Next Up: Gading Raya

Yep, all that water is just waiting for you :-)

Yep, all that water is just waiting for you on Sunday 🙂

Another of Jakarta’s finest this Sunday with a long overdue visit to the delights of Gading Raya, a challenging but pretty fair course.

We say long overdue because it was way back in December 2012 that we last played there, when the Immediate Past President of Most Things was still a lad and shocked us all by winning Low Net. Lightning surely cannot strike twice?

We have an official letter from the club telling us that we will get away from 1 and 10 at 11:00. Unfortunately we also have an equally official looking letter from them telling us we are away from 11:27 onwards and, as it has a later date on, 11:27 it is – and with little prospect of getting away any earlier than that.

Simon Reynolds has obtained a pretty attractive rate, including cart, of just 675,00 roops, only 15,000 more than we paid nearly two years ago which is something of a bargain for this quality of course, particularly given what your base country currency has done against the roop in the interim. Well done Simon.

30 plus Tee Setters already signed up so if you are not one of them then get your name down here.

Tee Set Championship

Getting closer, however, we still have a just a few places left so, once again, if you are not signed up don’t be shy as the remaining places will open to the great unwashed on Monday next – and we would hate for you to miss out.

A list of those already registered for the Championship can be found here and, as Brenda is not running the list, you are very strongly advised to confirm your name appears on it if you think you have registered 😦

Matoa Monthly Medal, Sunday 2nd October 2014

IMG_2236

Plenty stayed for the apres golf fun ….

The Day

A great turnout of 53 Tee Setters showed up in plenty of time for the 19th Tee Set Monthly Medal at Matoa on a very hot and sunny day that was thankfully to see us playing in cloudier and therefore cooler conditions before the end. Still no sign of rain though 🙂

There was in fact one major exception to the “plenty of time” observation as the Wiener family driver managed to get himself into the middle of the Jakarta Marathon amongst a number of other missteps – and ended up delivering his boss and family to the course nearly an hour after the first groups had teed off. “Good job we love him” said the tolerant Mitch. Quite.

IMG_2239

yes, we made it 🙂

For most, this was the last chance to get a good look at the course which will host the Tee Set Championship a little later in the year, when all will have observed that there is no lack of investment being thrown at the course, what with the renovated changing rooms, major new cart tracking and starting again almost from the start with the artificial lakes.

In truth they would have been better throwing at least some of that money at many of the fairway edges which have been in a scrubby condition for some years now. The Matoa greens on the other hand have always been the course highlight and remain in great nick.

A welcome innovation by management was the refreshment cart driven around the course by a couple of lovelies from the restaurant. Rp43K for a Bintang can was judged very reasonable compared to some other courses around Jakarta.

With a big DOGS group going out before us as well as our own healthy 53 souls we were all pretty happy with the 5 hours or less that it took us to get around, and with compulsory carts rule now in operation being favoured by most. Interesting to note that by 18:00 the DOGS group were already homeward bound with the exception of a handful who crossed over to join Tee Set – and that come 19:30 quite a number of Tee Setters were still around helping to finish off Bill Lloyds’ last bottle of red.

Welcome backs

A couple of Newcomers to report in Glenn Plumber visiting from the UK, and Tim Jeffrey – hope you enjoyed your first taste of golf the Tee Set way, guys!

Up until tee off Tim actually thought he was playing with DOGS 🙂

Frank and Anna Wilson, returning to Jakarta for their annual pilgrimage, also from the UK, top a rather long Welcome Back list of 33 players, with the Weiner family a little behind on 30 weeks.

Welcome back all – and where have you been!!

Anna had a few words to Brenda over her new single digit handicap of 8 who, after checking, found that one of Anna’s PJ rounds had been entered as 26 instead of 106 and then after correction the handicap became a rather more modest 26. It pays to check you handicap occasionally.

Franks ballIn what was turning out to be an incident packed day for the Wilson family, Frank whacked one of his drives into a white tee marker when his ball somehow stayed on course and ended up 100 meters down the middle of the fairway. Despite then duffing his second shot, he ended up parring the hole. Go figure.

Some great performances on the day with the stand-out being a new record 47 (yes, forty-seven!) Stableford points and what we are pretty sure is a new record Low Net of 61 to go with it. The Handicap Committee is going to be busy.

Another fine Tee Set Sunday.

The Play

Skills

IMG_2243Yes, a week of records as 21 Handicapper Chris Smith, fueled by Santi’s Premium Pies, rocketed to an 82 off the stick and an alarming 47 Stableford points to take the Monthly Medal. Chris’s was, amazingly, matched by another Tee Setter, Ed “YHOG Bandit” Bender Jr who took the red one for his Low Net 61 !

Richard Mau made another of his occasional returns to Tee Set and brought his “A” game with him this time in shooting a five over par 77 to take Low Gross while Low Putts went to Craig Binks with just 25 blows with the flat one. Craig also gets 6 of Santi’s Pies as reward for his labours, though he doesn’t know it yet.

Amongst the minor prizes, Norman Bunter’s startling 2nd shot from 130 metres out at a par four was to find the hole and secure him the rarely awarded 1st Eagle. Most people around the course could hear the roar that went up.

Boobies

Only a couple of skirts to show from a big field on a course that admittedly does not hugely advantage the ladies, but Shane’s performance as we tried to get the thing and a wig on him more than made up for that!

Lots more photos of an outstanding day on our Gallery (eventually) while you can find fuller, player by player, results here

2014 Tee Set Championship

The great majority of regulars and sponsors are now registered and ready to go, leaving around 20 slots still available for the 2014 Tee Set on Sunday the 30th November. A fantastic day of competitive golf is assured to go with some fantastic catering arrangements, enough drinks to sink a battleship, a new and unique “designer”  Tee Set Shirt and trophies and prizes galore in our 17 prize categories!

If you have not already then sign up now for the Jakarta golfing event of the year for just 1 juta.

Yayasan HOG Texas Scramble – 6th December 2014

Without doubt, the Tee Set’s favourite charity is the Yayasan HOG, an organisation that works tirelessly to raise funds for disadvantaged Indonesian youngsters, especially targeting those born with cleft palate and harelip conditions, conditions which condemn them to a quite miserable life in this country without treatment.

This year alone, YHOG is on track to fund 130 operations on these kids; it really is the most worthy of causes and we would be thrilled to see a good turnout from Tee Set in supporting an event which is 1,500,000 rupiah for what will be a fantastic day based ENTIRELY at the Sentul Highlands course. So sign up for yourself or get a group of four together and name you own team (nb Tee Set Tossers is already taken!).

With all the day’s cost covered by sponsors, you can enjoy the golf and the fun while safe in the knowledge that every single one of those one and a half million rupiah are going directly to helping those kids. Let’s do it!!

Next Up

Gading Raya out in West Jakarta is an outstanding course and a little more accessible these days since the last time we played there in December 2012. Simon Reynold has secured the deal at an attractive 675,000 for this quality of course and with an 11:00 pm tee off from 1 and 10. Well done, Simon.

See ya at Gading!! …. Tee Set

PS with one thing and another we have not seen much of the President of Some Things recently what with marriage and 50th Birthday celebrations getting in the way, which we we can certainly excuse.

Peter has now been forced “against his will” to join a group of avid fisherman and thus miss his weekly golfing fix. Nevertheless he continued to fly the Tee Set flag by being appropriately attired during his days at sea.

See ya soon, suckers!!

Next Up: Matoa Monthly Medal, Sunday October 26th 2014

An end of month return to our home course at Matoa for the Monthly Medal, something which always adds an extra dimension to the Tee Set Sunday fun. With the rainy season a little overdue, we may be bringing our Pawang Hujan out of retirement this week, so please give him a cheery smile as you see him going about his important work. He will grizzle back at you but don’t let that put you off, his grizzle is worse than his bite.

This will be our 19th Monthly Medal since the first back in February 2013 – here is the honours roll since that ground-breaking moment.

Monthly Medal Honours Roll

As you can see, quite a mix of the good and the great and the, erm, not so great – and exactly therefore what the Monthly Medal is all about, allowing players from the full spectrum of abilities to compete on a level(ish) playing field.

Also, and as we pointed out last time, the absence of some of the good and the great in Bali will only increase the chances of the rest of us, so let’s do it!

The usual Slaney’s voucher for the Monthly Medal Winner, six of Santi’s delicious pies for closest to the pin and a Cecelia’s Cafe voucher for longest drive (I think – ED) so a day not to be missed

600,000 for green fees including compulsory cart and an 11:45 tee off from 1 & 10 so, if you aren’t amongst the 30 who have signed up already, then sign up now.

See ya Sunday! … Tee Set

Jagorawi New Course, Sunday 19th October 2014

Tetty was in good time for the noodles though ...

Tetty was in good time for the noodles though …

The Day

On one of the very hottest days of the year, Jagorawi (or Jagowari as our Aussie mates insist upon calling it – as in no wari’s mate) was not only the scene of the usual Tee Set Sunday but also the last round of the 2014 Interleague and, for once, we will give that a higher billing.

Newcomers andf welcome backs

But first, news of a healthy 5 Newcomers, though we suspect that Rex and Tarik, on a business trip to this fair country will feature prominently on the Welcome Back list next time they play with us.

No matter, a warm welcome to all our Newcomers – we just hope the unforgiving Jags layout has not scared you off and that we’ll see you all playing again at some stage – we do have plenty of easier courses on the Tee Set roster!!

Welcome back to Singapore based Dave Allan who played only his second round of the year with Tee Set. though heading the list were the Zoets and the Gressers who all live rather more locally and therefore have rather less excuse!

Being a cart path course, Jags always plays on the slow side but, with a really hot day, a slow but steady pace was just fine.

Interleague

So to the Interleague, where Tee Set entered the final round of Interleague match play full of optimism and enthusiasm, however, while the team looked well-balanced and full of in-form golfers, the Cloggies 4 points lead going in to the day  was always going to make overhauling them an uphill battle.

Nevertheless, the team battled to a 5 / 5 tie with a Pocksia side on a mission to redeem themselves after a 10 point gift to Mad Dogs for the dreaded no-show last month. In the end these gift points were the difference between 2nd and 3rd place with Tee Set and Mad Dogs both ending tied on 41 points and Mad Dogs nosing ahead on a count back thanks to those same gifted points 😦

Cloggies took 6 points from Sandbaggers on the day to reach 46 points and be crowned Interleague champions for 2014. Well done Cloggies.

Plenty of new players blooded for Tee Set this year so it won’t be long before the trophy is finally resting in our hands.

Worth mentioning that Jeremy Dwyer of Pocksia went par on hole #10, an ace on hole # 11 followed by a birdie on #12 which helped shut down Tee Set momentum. Three under after 3 holes, not bad for a 15 handicapper.

The PlaySkills

In the usual Tee Set stroke play we had 26 Tee Setters playing off two tee boxes in addition to our 8 Interleaguers, bringing attendance on the day to 34, a high this year for a course that seldom brings out the Tee Set in droves.

A Chivas fuelled John Suermondt taking a firm grip on his prize :-)

A Chivas fuelled John Suermondt taking a firm grip on his prize 🙂

John Suermondt proved that sharing a buggy and a bottle of 18-year-old Chivas with his playing partner can do more good than harm and managed to shoot the lowest net round of the day with a 72.

Eventually the Chivas was to catch up with him however, leaving the Immediate Past President of Most Things to endure the usual macet on the homeward bound trip with only the sound of John’s snoring for company.

Low gross went to Simon Reynolds yet again, this time with a steady 81 but it wasn’t enough for him to win his Interleague match play, going down on the 18th.

With free beer flowing on the 19th tee courtesy of Jeremy Dymer’s ace, some interesting stories of the day’s play started to emerge, though Tetty being late for the tee off was not to be the biggest surprise of the days as she has become a very worthy challenger to Wina’s previously uncontested weekly Latecomer title – but Craig Ewers taking 12 stokes on a hole was rather uncharacteristic of his revamped game.

Neil Mullins had some difficult moments despite his match play win and was close to having to abandon a lob wedge that had somehow managed to take up residence well above head height in an inconsiderate tree. Clearly a case of what happens on the course staying on the course.

Boobies

A relatively sparse 2 skirts this week but the lack of quantity was more than made up for by the quality and indeed enthusiasm of these two Tee Set “Sunday Cross Dressers“, Newcomer Cam Marsland and Hossam Elwakil each showing a rare talent. Thanks guys!

Skirt 2

The lovely Brenda managed to capture some great shots of a  great day while rather more detailed player by player results can be found here.

Next Up

Next Sunday see us at Matoa for the monthly medal at Matoa with an 11:45 tee time and green fees of 600,000 roops (TBC).

Matoa, as any cart rider will tell you, was designed as a walking course but, we are unhappy to relate, has now become a cart-only course and no longer part of the diminishing number of tracks in the Jakarta area offering a decent walk. A number of changes have been made to the cart paths to make getting around in a cart around a little more sensible, however, its origins continue to show.

Don’t miss your last chance to have a look at the Matoa layout prior to the Championship event in November. Valuable prizes available for most Stableford points, nearest to the pin and low putts and other stuff.

With some key players out-of-town for the Bali Classic event this could be your best chance ever to win an award, maybe even win the Monthly Medal 🙂

Sign up here for what should be another great Tee Set Sunday.

We understand there are plans for Tee Set to Challenge for a new record at Matoa. Click here to get an idea of the record they are after.

Jagorawi New Course, Sunday 19th October 2014

InterleagueYep, it is squeaky bum time for the top 4 in the Jakarta Interleague – any one of them could win it if the results go their way on Sunday at Jags, not least Tee Set!!

We play lowest ranked Sentul Swingers on the last day of the season – when another 10-0 would do very nicely, as would an out-of-the-box performance from Tin Cups who play leaders and favourites, the Cloggies.

Whether you are playing regular Tee Set or Interleague it looks like being a fine day out on of Jakarta’s premier courses with the weather continuing to smile on us every week – and decent beer at 35,000 a glass at the 19th. Mind numbing prices on the course though, so you may care to take the usual mitigating measures.

Green fees, including cart for a 9.30 -10:00 tee off are 955,000.

If you plan on joining the fun then please register here.

See ya at Jags! … Tee Set

Imperial Golf Klub, 12th October 2014

Skirt

Greg and Mark sharing the duties – and sensibly use Brenda as a distraction ….

The Day

We didn’t play Imperial from it opening for more than twenty years until late in August when we lost our virginity for the first time (eh?-ED) and are back again less than two months later – and will play again in the round before Xmas. Hard to know why we left it so long, we love the whole set up there and they love us – a marriage made in heaven – and 43 Tee Setters thought so today.

There were plenty of reports of 20-30 minutes to get to the course from various parts of South Jakarta using the JORR’s recently opened “missing link” and some brilliant weather kept the pessimists at bay (“isn’t it supposed to be rainy season already?”) while the course was a dream, with a galaxy of cute caddies to join in that dream together with a clubhouse and staff that were faultless.

Newcomers and welcome backsOK, some of our play was on the roapy side but you can’t have everything for heaven’s sake.

Just one Newcomer to report in Tony Amato who proved he is no slouch off the stick with a 43-40-83 – and can expect a knock on the door from the Immediate Past President of Nearly Everything with his Interleague Captain’s hat on. Welcome to Tee Set, Tony.

Couple of impressive Welcome Backs in Bill Tevruchte, who finally found his way back to Jakarta from a far distant kampung, to break bread with a few old mates – and Nenden Fleischmann, reigning Club Champion who unfortunately fell victim to Sukarno’s Revenge around the turn. Don’t worry, she will be back to defend on the 30th November!

The most notable Welcome Back, though you will not find her in the table above was, in your ‘umble scribe’s opinion, the return of Brenda after a two-week working “holiday” which coincided with the absence of the grown-ups and left him with far too little time to pay proper attention to the blandishments of Mr Walker (J.). So a rather heartfelt Welcome Back to her too.

The Play

Skills

With Handicaps not having been updated for some weeks due to the absence of our Secretary, the fast improving Craig Ewers took advantage, to loud and near universal derision, to shoot Low Net with a 65. With Brenda back in the saddle, Craig can expect a radical update to his handicap in the very near future 🙂

JorgeJorge Gonzalez shot an astonishing 14 less on his back 9 to take Most Improved while John Suermondt’s return from family duties in Ozz made sure the Jelinek family hegemony over 1st Par for HC>=30 was broken!

Chris LeverSimon Reynolds took Low Gross with a 79 off the stick to take full advantage of the absence of Pulpy and the Boy Wonder while Chris Lever showed he is learning Tee Set ways with his Low Putts total of just 26.

Greg Fields didn’t take too long to secure 1st Sandy, coming out from the beach and one putting on the very first hole he played.

boobies

A pretty good skirt return as might be expected from a course where the red tee can be up to 80 yards in front of the blue equivalent – with 6 Tee Setters falling to the curse – and Jeremy Aniere making it a double with Monster Putter to go with it.

A very fine win by some margin in Most Strokes for Tom Grace with a magnificent 14 on one hole to leave Tetty in the clear on 11 – and a veritable throng breathing a collective sigh of relief on 10.

Tee Set Championship

Everything coming together very nicely for the Championship with three gold Sponsors signed up, leaving space for one more if you or yours are interested; drop Ric a line if so.

Tee Setters who had played the requisite minimum number of games from the last Championship until some date a couple or so weeks ago have signed up in abundance for the Championship as you will see here. If you thought you had signed up by replying to the e-mail you should have received, but your name doesn’t appear here, then drop us a strong e-mail of complaint here.

With Tee Setters already registered, and the slots we reserve for our generous sponsors, that really doesn’t leave too many spaces left – so don’t hang about if you want to play in the Tee Set event of the year by getting your details down here.

Sunday sees us at Jagorawi for all the usual fun plus the final round of the Interleague competition.

For this Sunday’s Interleague event, it’s the moment of truth for the at least 4 teams still in the running to take out the season’s top award – with Tee Set being one of these teams.

Just think, one wayward drive or missed putt could be the difference between finishing top of the pile or a few places down the ladder. The front-runners are preparing their strategies but their opponents will not give in without a good fight. Does it get any better than this? Golfing folklore in the making.

The Interleague shot-gun start is 09:30 while Tee Setters playing the normal stroke play will hit off immediately after.

Come support your Interleague team and in the process enjoy one of the premier courses of Jakarta. Should you need additional motivation then at the 19th hole there is draft San Miguel on tap at around Rp35K a glass .

Green fees with cart will be Rp955K and 50% of your Tee Set registration fee goes towards the Interleague B-B-Q organized for November 23rd – the week before the Tee Set Championship.

Get yourself signed up here for what could be an historic day.

Imperial was most certainly one of the highlights of the year so far when we were last out there in August, as anyone who was there on the day will tell you – and Sunday should be just as good and something of a bargain with green fees at just 675,000 for a top class set-up.

Call for nominations for Tee Set President 2014/2015

electionWe have had a strong response to our call for nominations. Something we should have mentioned on the page from the start is that none of the current committee of Peter, Rick and Keith are available for nomination, though the two latter are both willing to continue to support whoever is elected President.

If you nominated any of the three of them then we don’t want to see your nomination wasted as you only have one bullet- so if you indeed nominated one of them then you can can have your bullet back – and nominate any other candidate you see on the list if you so wish.

Registering for the Tee Set Championship

Finally and perhaps even most importantly, tomorrow is your final chance to preferentially sign up for the Tee Set Championship on the 30th November – and receive the discounted rate of 900,00 roops which is the bargain of the year for what is going to be the best ever!

All those who qualified for these preferences, ie who have played 6 or more Tee Set Sundays since the last Championship, received an e-mail with a link to the registration page last week and, of the 89 qualifying Tee Setters, 55 have already registered. We know some of you have left the country but for the rest, we don’t want you to miss your chance so take action now. If you have “lost” the e-mail with the link then let us know.

From the 11th October, the remaining slots, after an allocation to our sponsors of course, will be made available to Joe Public.

See ya at Imperial!! … Tee Set

PS Tom Alcedo is offering some high class new/barely used equipment in the Classifieds this week, while there is a junior set also available from Hal Hayne if you have a budding Tee Setter under 6 in the house.

PPS we have expanded what is available under “Handicaps” to provide background on what they are for, how they are calculated and hopefully reduce the frequency of questions and complaints about them from Tee Setters, not least Newcomers!!

The main message is that your handicap is aspirational and most certainly not the arithmetical average of what you score every week!!

Pangkalan Jati, Sunday 5th October 2014

Skirts

most of today’s large crop of cross-dressers, though the reason for Michael Seabrook’s curious choice of headgear remains unclear 🙂

The Day

A bad day for our 4-legged friends meant a good day for Tee Setters with the journey to the Pangkalan Jati course achieved in record time in super light traffic for the turnout of the healthy number of Tee Setters showing up, 37 – and a car park, clubhouse  and course nearly as empty to go with it.

Regular Monthly Medal “Neary” Sponsor, Santi’s Premium Pies, got many of us off to a fine start with samples of her latest creation, the Beef Rendang Pie, a pie to which even Master Baker Pulpy George was to give exceptionally high marks. Many thanks to the eponymous Santi!

Already allocated an early tee off at 10:30, the starter needed little persuasion to get the first groups off from 1 and 10 at 10am – unprecedented, and the pace on the course was also good, with most groups coming in at around three and a half hours.

Welcome backsJust one Newcomer to report this week, Dave Collecott, so a warm welcome to him. Dave registered for play at 8.59, just 61 minutes before tee off so well done him, just a little earlier next time though Dave when you will get your own scorecard!

14  Welcome Backs with Wally Walters heading the list with an impressive 172 weeks since last played though he does have a good excuse having left Indonesia back in 2011 and just being on a business visit this time. Well done for remembering and re-joining us, Wally.

The day was also notable for the near total absence of Tee Set officials with Ric and Peter away on yet more marriage related duties one presumes, while Brenda is tied up with Financial year-end accounting matters in her day job.

All this meant that the Web Guy had to do more or less everything, though Mel Meeds stepped into the breech to sort out flights while Santi, despite not being able to play today, did a flawless job extracting money from all and sundry – and managing to take some photos while she was about it. Many thanks to them all.

Also worth a mention for Jess Kindler who registered on Friday with the following:

Comment: I have to buy the wife a dog on Saturday afternoon so as long as that happens I’ll be there, so please print me a scorecard…

With dog duly bought Jess turned up in plenty of time, and was the central figure in one of the day’s highlights as he took his third shot from BEHIND the Ladies’ Tee but somehow still managed to avoid a skirt. You will have to ask him yourself!

All in all a great day at our former home course, with the course in good nick, the weather glorious if a little hot and the beer cheap and plentiful. And, as a final bonus, the early start, fast pace of play and record-breaking results recording etc. meant the shouting was all over by 4:30, allowing the many who wanted to watch various major sporting events to both support the day and get home in time to watch their favourites on the box.

The Play

Boobys

A day to warm the cockles of the absent Treasurer’s heart as, to go with a healthy crop of 8 Skirt fines, we had a 6 way tie for Most Strokes and even a two-way tie for Monster Putter for a total of 800,000 roops in fines going to Tee Set funds – and what must surely be a record for one event.

Thanks to all for your generosity this week!

Prizes

Shome, mishtake, shurely?

Shome, mishtake, shurely?

Good job we had all that money coming in from fines as there were also an unseemly number of ties for the skills prizes as well, with three Tee Setters sharing Low Gross, 2 sharing 1st Birdie and even 1st Par >=30 being going to two of our number for achieving that on the third hole, the latter cementing the iron grip the Jelinek family has recently established over that particular prize 🙂

Low Gross - Craig EdThe day’s major prize on the other hand , Low Net, went to but a single first time winner, Craig Edwards, who took full advantage of his handicap and more to come in with a net 65. Well done Craig, expect a significant adverse move in your handicap as soon as Brenda returns to action 😦

Fuller results of the day can be found here while what photos of the day that were taken can be seen on the Tee Set Gallery as ever.

2014 Matchplay Championship

Just one of the few remaining games played today and it really couldn’t have been any closer with 7 handicapper Pulpy Bevege only squeezing out 29 handicapper Tom Alcedo on the putting green after finishing even after 18 holes. Great stuff guys!

Your committee has, in its wisdom, decided that given the (comparatively) excellent progress made this year under hard-man Fernando “El Guapo” Gaggino, that the Matchplay Final will be played ahead of Tee Set Championship Day, thereby allowing the finalists to fully enjoy the fun of our biggest day of the year.

2014 Tee Set Championship

51 of the 89 Tee Setters who have played 6 or more times since the last Championship have been invited by e-mail and have confirmed their participation in this year’s event on the 30th November.

Together with Sponsor allocations this means that there are just 25 or so slots left to fill. If you received our e-mail inviting you to play but haven’t yet confirmed your intention to participate in the Championship then you have just five more days left to do so – and receive the preferential rate of 900,000 roops and indeed participation, as the remaining places will be thrown open to all on a first-come first served basis on the 11th October at a somewhat less advantageous rate. Do it, and do it now to avoid disappointment and tears.

Next Up

Imperial Gold ClubWithout doubt, one of the very finest days of the Tee Set year was our first ever round at the Imperial Golf Klub back in late August.

Thanks to the efforts of our tireless course scheduler, Wina, we have a very welcome early return to a fine club in every respect, a club moreover that made us really very welcome to boot so don’t miss the opportunity of joining in the fun and get yourself signed up as soon as possible for what should be another fabulous day. 11:47 tee off from 1 and 10 – and green fees of a bargain 675,000 roops.

To add to its attractions, access to Imperial, out at Lippo Karawaci on the western flatlands and just off the Merak Tol, has been made much easier for South Jakartans by the completion of the last section of the Outer Ring Road.

Selamat jalan and see ya at Imperial !!! …. Tee Set
