Next Up: Jagorawi New Course. Sunday 22nd June 2014

New Course 15Our next challenge is the Jagorawi New Course located in the stunning  jungle setting of the Cikeas River Valley. Construction of the first Jagorawi course started in the same year that construction of  the first Jalan Tol completed in 1979 and the course, uniquely, benefits from what is almost its own private Tol exit!

The course was the first course of modern design in the country and has achieved worldwide recognition for its quality, featuring in all those “Top 100 Golf Courses of the World”  photographic tomes that no self-respecting golfer would be without on his coffee table.

For years (don’t you have a date? – Ed) the Jakarta Interleague has been privileged to take advantage of the New Course and its clubhouse as its regular monthly venue from February to November. Those advantages include being able to tee off 60-80 players around 9:30am in a mini-shotgun format, something which could not be done anywhere else without having to close the course.

Sunday will see the usual Tee Set Plus, ie the full set of Tee Set prizes and penalties for all players plus Interleague against the top ranking “Cloggies” for eight of our number – and with all players also participating in for the Interleague’s Long Drive and Nearest to the Pin prizes for players of various categories.

Arguably Indonesia’s premier golf course, “Jags” charges rather higher prices than we destitute Tee Setters are used to, though the special rate we will pay on Sunday of 805,000 roops, including cart, is something of a bargain for a course of such quality even though the full shot-gun from as many holes as required will not be until 12:45 this week, due to an “event” of course. Sign up for the fun here as usual.

In partial mitigation relatively cheap cans of the amber neck fluid will be available on the 19th.

In case you missed it in our last post, here is the latest Interleague Newsletter again.

Lido Lakes Weekend – 5th & 6th July

A reminder that the fun and games of a Tee Set golfing weekend is just around the corner and, if you haven’t already, then get your skates on and register here.

The Sunday morning tee off time will be at 9am, allowing those who stayed overnight a chance to sleep off the excesses of  the BBQ on the Saturday evening and take a leisurely breakfast and, for those who didn’t, there is time to hike it from Jakarta in the morning and play their usual Tee Set Sunday in the Sun™.

Timing for the event has been cleverly planned for Ramadan so that we can expect lighter than usual traffic both on the roads and also on an excellent course.

See ya at Jags …. Tee set

PS A reminder to come armed with a few extra balls; it’s a jungle out there!

Rancamaya, Sunday 15th June 2014

A change from the usual view of the lovely Gd. Salak, the almost as lovely Rancamaya clubhouse

A change from the usual view of the lovely Salak, the almost as lovely Rancamaya clubhouse

The Day

Thanks to the efforts of long time Tee Setter and Bogor resident, Juergen Degert, the Rancamaya golf course was once again made available to Tee Set at a very affordable rate considering its place as one of the premier private courses in Jakarta.

The club’s management welcomed our 40 players with open arms, although the members straggling in after their morning medal event were less than enthusiastic at seeing our large group crowding out what they consider their personal facilities. Always regrettable to come across such crass rudeness but it’s a feature of life these days it appears.

Stoking up

The day started early for some with a fine big breakfast at Cecilia’s Café on Jl. Ampera to charge up the batteries. Andrew Sincock joining up for his first Tee Set game in 75 weeks was part of the group and even finished his salad when it was pointed out that it might be a long time between meals.

With half a dozen of Santi Miller’s finest pies on-board in case we got lost along the way, the Immediate ex-President of Most Things loaded up the Fortuna with the Sincock family, clubs and secretary Brenda and headed for the Bogor tol. After negotiating some serious macet at the Ciawi toll booth and again at the Sukabumi feeder road intersection, we made the club house in just under 2 hours which all were agreed could have been a lot worse. More on the traffic horror stories later.

The starter was keen to get us out as quickly as possible to free up the facilities for the members and we were more than happy to oblige. The first group teed off before 11:30, the last at 12:45 but this long period unfortunately tends to decimate the 19th tee numbers. Mini shotgun starts can alleviate the problem but requires more player cooperation and planning than we got. Always difficult to do when the group is split between the practice putting green, the warm up massage rooms and the remainder in the restaurant charging up with food and drink. A real nightmare for those tasked with making the groupings.

RM Welcome backsWith the club members gone, we had the course and the afternoon to ourselves and the light rain on the back nine did nothing to dampen the joy of playing the finest Jakarta area course. In fact the rain cleared the air and we were treated to the vision of Genung Salak and surrounding mountains rising into the heavens like something out of a script from Lord of the Rings. Just breathtaking to see and a key reason why this course is one of the very best in Indonesia.Brothers James and Peter Thio joined us for the first time and we hope they enjoyed the day enough to return again soon – the traffic is seldom that bad guys!

Welcome backers included David McKeown at a startling 110 weeks to take the honours for most weeks away, followed by Andrew Sincock’s 76 and Alan Fenwick at 29. Not so long next time, guys!!

The Play

RM MelBragging rights for the day went to Mel Meeds with a fine 68 Low Net win. Well timed show of form from Mel as we approach Interleague again.

Simon Reynolds is getting ever more confident in his game and took Low Gross again with a jaw dropping 77 off the stick. No longer is low gross the immediate privilege of our lowest handicapper but Sam Westen still got his money back with a 1st hole sandy nevertheless.RM Sam

Others in the money were Jiro taking Low Putts with a commendable 27 slaps and Ken Runyon’s 1st Birdie once we sorted out this was on his first hole played and not hole #10.

There is a very useful legend on  the Tee Set scorecard that says – Hole # above is “as played”- – it might just as well be written in invisible ink for some 🙂

Ah, always nice to meet new people

Ah, always nice to meet new people

Geoff Thwaites proved again the theory that improvement on the back nine is directly proportional to the amount of Bintangs consumed while Christian Molau took  1st Par for handicap >= 30 to wisely hedge against the likelihood of an underachievement “award”.

Noemi Roos and  Giovanni Mignano shared Monster Putter with 43 slaps while Andrew Sincock, like Noemi, had to dig deep into Dad’s pockets to find a Rp50K note to pay for his Most Strokes.

Christian Molau wearing that familiar "not another bloody skirt" look as well as the skirt itself ....

Christian Molau wearing that familiar “not another bloody skirt” look as well as the skirt itself ….

The skirts group was small but colourful as you see above. For those unable to recognise the cross dressers, the underachievers today were (L-R) Jaco Zaayman, a Brad Sincock in heavy disguise, Alan Fenwick and Christian Molau,  .

The immediate past President of Most Things brought the event to a close by thanking Juergen for his facilitation and wishing all a safe trip home. By all accounts everyone made it safely although the 2+ hour drive home which left a lot of wives wondering which watering hole their husbands had stopped off at on the way.

More photos of the day on Tee Set’s photo website and fuller, player by player results here.

Tee Set Matchplay Championship

Rounding out the play was Peter Bush defeating Mustafa Baabad 3 and 1 in the only matchplay of the day. Well done Peter, former champion Mustafa is no pushover when it comes to match play, or anything else for that matter.

Next Up

Interleague at Jags (see report from  the last event here) woven into the usual Tee Set and our brave lads up against the highly fancied and league leading Cloggies. Tee Set has always looked good on paper but has not delivered too often but our boys are a handful of very competitive regulars playing competitive golf week to week so the Interleague heavyweights would be best not to rest on their laurels.

Tee off is a late 12:45 but it’s a shot gun start off all holes on the New Course so the round should be quick and green fees a less than usually punitive Rp805K including shared cart.

All Tee Setters will play for all  the usual awards and also get into the Interleague long drive and nearest to the pin awards – and there should be some discounted beer back in the club house after the game to top off the day.

All players, whether or not expecting to play Interleague should register here as usual for a Tee Set Sunday of Fun in the Sun.

See ya Sunday at Jags … Tee Set

PS and it’s Selamat Jalan to them as they set off bravely into the Ciawi night for the long journey back to Jakarta.

.... and its good night to them ...

…. and its good night to them …

Next Up: Rancamaya, Sunday 15th June 2014

Hi Attendence tableRancamaya’s place in most Tee Setters hearts has long been assured and only newcomer Senayan’s fantastic location together with an amazing turnout at Palm Hills last week prevents its hegemony in this table that shows the top 10 and equal non-championship events by attendance since 1st January 2012 – for which can safely be read “all time”.

Strong early registrations indicate that this affection is not on the wane.

A rather later than usual 12:30 start on Sunday due to a Members Medal event, however, a “mini-shotgun” is promised to ensure we finish well before darkness sets in.

Rancamaya mountain viewGreat value green fees of just 580,000 roops including shared cart and cute caddy makes Rancamaya a “no brainer” if we ever saw one. Get there early and enjoy brunch and a chat with your mates on Rancamaya’s iconic terrace with its magnificent views towards Salak.

We would appreciate it if you could get your registration in before 4pm on Friday if at all possible. Later registrations than that give us some small but irritating admin issues and we would be happy if they were the exception rather than the rule for all. That said, if you wake up on a Sunday morning and suddenly feel like a game then, as always at Tee Set, just showing up will get you a round – and just maybe a scowl.

On Rancamaya Sundays we run the Tee Set bus from Hero Kemang if there is sufficient demand – cost around 175,000 roops including cold ones on the way back. Send Ric an e-mail if you fancy the fun of the charabanc which offers is own unique atmosphere, particularly on the way back as you kick back, relax and try a few of those cold ones as the less fortunate battle through the return traffic 🙂 We guess the Bus will leave Hero at 9.30 but Ric will confirm.

2014 Tee Set Matchplay Championship

The battle of the Millers didn’t last too long on Tuesday as an in-form Santi blasted her husband off the Rainbow Hills course 7 and 6. The normally opinionated male of the species was silenced for long periods by the quality of his wife’s play – with those silences only to be disturbed by occasional complaints about the quite huge distances to be found between the blue and red tees and “why did you save your best golf of the year for me?”

See yah at the lovely Rancamaya! … Tee Set

Palm Hill, 8th June 2014

PH James Farmer stays cool

Newcomer Giovanni finding that la Dolce Vita can also be found in the land of the Durian ..

The Day

PH Newcomers

Sixty Jakarta residents decided that Sunday golf at Palm Hill was just about what the doctor ordered and a great day out is what they got.

Perfect timing to get away from South Jakarta where the local authorities believe they have every right to close public roads to all traffic so that the local community groups can set up a local bazaar selling items of questionable value.

How do the real businesses operating in Kemang Raya put up with that every year?? Nevertheless traffic jams was not something our group had to contend with today, though we still had Tee Setters arriving up to just 10 minutes before tee off.

Luckily no last-minute reshuffling of groups was required and we ended with 15 full flights much to the relief of the Immediate Past President of Most Things.

The starter did a grand job of finding enough buggies and caddies to fulfil our requirements even if it was all a bit piece meal in terms of process. Those waiting for a buggy were condemned to while away the time in the restaurant watching the cutest array of waitresses ever assembled in a golf club.

Top marks to the management’s idea of fitting out the girls in World Cup soccer shirts and shorts. The jury is out as to what country won but certainly the standouts were Miss Argentina and Miss Russia in the writer’s “expert” opinion.

Nearly 20% of the group, a record-breaking 11, were Newcomers and of multiple nationalities including our first Finns ever to play Tee Set, three of  them! Other nationalities included Japanese, Italian, Indonesian and the UK, A very warm welcome to Tee Set to you all, we are becoming a right old United Nations.

Welcome back players were also there in some abundance with Kathy Hill taking the prize at 35 weeks without a visit. Mark Rae at 28 weeks was not far behind but based on his exceptional day out, it’s almost guaranteed he’ll be back next week. Good to see Joe Rizzoli out for a hit although he didn’t get past the finish line, begging off with a bad back or another “commitment” depending on whom you consult.

The course was in pretty good shape, with the rainy season finally out-of-the-way, Buggies were allowed on the course for the first time in memory although if a marshal was watching the rough needed to be the track to follow, if not then straight down the fairway was just fine and dandy.

Greens were true but as hard as concrete so impossible for a spinning ball to hold. Ball marks from a pitch in from 70m were notable only by their absence .

The latish tee time could have caused a problem but all groups were in the club house well and truly before the sun dropped behind the Bogor Hills.

Well done to Wina for organising the course at such short notice – and to Brenda for coping with the hordes.

All in all, arguably the finest Tee Set Sunday this year.

The Play

PH Prizes

Sam Westen’s non-appearance for the second week in a row means he loses his lead in the race for the title of most games played in 2014 – and gave the opportunity to take low gross to the next tier level of weekend warriors.

Three tied on 82 but Jeff Landau got the nod for the money over Ken Runyon and Simon Reynolds as they had prizes waiting in other categories.

Low net with a 67 went to Mark Rea who allegedly shot his first sub 90 round in a decade. A bit of confusion over low putts but we now believe the winner is Mel Meeds with a 27. We owe you, Mel.

PH Mark HowellsKen Runyon took first and only eagle, Simon Reynolds took money for first birdie, while Mark Howells grabbed first sandy on hole 1 but gave the money back. Thanks Mark.

Geoff Thwaites didn’t complete his warm up session before heading out to tee box 1 so suffered badly on the front nine but when he turned for home there was a definite spring in his step for whatever reason resulting in an 8 shot improvement and so took the money.

Lina Bunter playing in a ladies only group managed first par handicap over thirty, an achievement we can put down to her playing her own game without male supervision. 🙂

PH Booby Prizes

At the other end of the scale we had some under achievers.

PH Lina SibsonKathy Hill took most strokes at 12 (you’re not getting out on the green stuff often enough, Kathy!) while Newcomer Lina Sibson used her putter a remarkable 50 times in establishing her relationship with the Monster Putter Monkey – and that was just on the greens.

Getting past the Ladies tee box has always been a bit of an issue at Palm Hill and continues to be so.

Some old, some new ......

Some old, some new, something borrowed, something  …… pink?!

Daniel Tandjung has real issues when he puts a ball on a tee and failed 5 times to get past the reds. Nevertheless one failure or 5 makes no difference since the fine is the same as for Christian Molau, Ewan Kindness, Hannu Hirvela, Marku Suokko and Thurmond Borden who all failedto get past the red tees, but just once.

Skirt ratio is an important statistic at the end of the year and hopefully Daniel will improve on his current rating of 1oo% “success”.

Fuller, player by player, results can be found here while lots more photos of the day are up there on our Photo Gallery.

2014 Tee Set Matchplay Championship

Mel Meeds beat David Shenman 5 & 4

Tom Alcedo beat Frank Musgrove 3 & 2

Mel lost his long yellow tee after 2 years of faithful service and was quite inconsolable, not even his win could cheer him up.

Next Up

We are definitely being spoiled; a 1 pm start at Tee Set’s favourite course next Sunday at Rancamaya for the wallet-lite price of 580,000 roops.

Tee off a little late due to their Members Monthly, however, we will be starting from more than  the usual 2 holes is the word on the street. Sign up here for what will be another great Rancamaya day on that fabulous course.

See yah at Rancamaya! …. Tee Set

PS If you think you can carry your kit round in a violent pink “Hello Kitty” bag without it coming to the notice of the Tee Set Photo Mafia, then think again 🙂

League TableThe venue on Sunday, Palm Hill, is certainly one of our most popular as you will see from the “League Table” of those events that have drawn 45 or more Tee Setters since 1-1-12.

Clearly the result of Tee Setters voting with their feet and it is equally clear that Sunday will be no exception, with close to 40 of us having already cast our votes by registering to play on Sunday.

Tee off time will be 12:00 but with the likelihood of getting away a little earlier so don’t cut it too fine.

Green fees etc. remain the same as last year and represent good value at 608,000 including compulsory cart.

Better not to have to make the decision whether to walk the course in the baking hot weather to be found hereabouts at this time.

If you haven’t done so already then sign up in the usual place to join what should be yet another superb Tee Set Sunday.

See yah at Palm Hills!!! … Tee Set

PS and yes, the caddies are even more attractive than your average Tee Setter ……

Yep, the caddies are even more attractive than the Tee Setters :-)

Permata Sentul, Sunday 1st June 2014

PS Caddies and resto staff

The Day

Newcomers

The sunshine, a challenging course, free pitchers of beer, attractive restaurant waitresses and cute caddies proved an irresistible combination for the 42 Tee Setters who showed up today, with attendance getting a small boost from 5 DOGS regulars who found themselves in between courses this week and unable to resist a game. Great to see them all; any time guys.

Three Newcomers to report this week with two of them being DOGS, David Carpenter and Peter Thorley and the third being visiting Brit, Richard Holliday, a warm Tee Set welcome to them all. Jeff Landau led the welcome back brigade after being away 29 weeks, closely followed by Larry Crowley at 23 weeks.

Your scribe’s cart, with brakes so poor that even General Motors would have recalled them years ago, was eventually to be replaced when he was to sensibly give the new one’s brakes a test.

“Very sharp” was the conclusion as the following cart, went straight up the replacement cart’s rear end, scattering the cuties hanging on like pigeons with a cat about. Damage zero fortunately.

PS KSM at the keyboardSecretary Brenda was away on family duties this week so Keith Miller stepped up to the plate and did a great job logging all the results although sadly he certainly doesn’t brush up anywhere near as well as our lovely Secretary – hurry back Brenda, we miss you.

The trip back to Jakarta on the toll was a breeze and almost  as fast as the journey there and this despite the prediction of a log jam from returning Puncak holiday makers. Permata Sentul to Star Deli on a Sunday evening in under an hour is very nearly  a record.

All in all a very fine day and we will certainly have Permata Sentul in the second half schedule.

The Play

Skill Prizes

The Permata Sentul course has some challenging aspects to it with tight, sloping fairways, many elevated greens and some seriously unfriendly pin placements.  Putting from above the hole on the likes of # 6 and #11 saw the ball increase in speed with each rotation no matter how delicate the putting stroke. Nevertheless 6 golfers were able to get under 30 puts with James Ross taking the money with a miserly 28 slaps.

PS Jorge with MonkeyJorge Gonzales on the other hand took 16 putts more then James which earned him the Monster putter award which, judging by the width of his smile he didn’t seem too unhappy about.  We guess he has a soft spot for our little furry friend.

Happily Jorge balanced the books by taking the First par >= 30 handicap while Christian Molau was recognized for shooting the first and only birdie for an over 30 handicapper. We don’t see many of those animals.

First birdie overall went to Fernando Gaggino with a great drive on #12 and a fearless second shot across the pond to hit the green in regulation and hole out the putt.

Fernando also shared 1st Sandy with Geary Bowles on hole #1 but the money went to Geary for this one while Evaldo Roos almost refused to acknowledge his Most Improved total of 9 until the red bill was actually waved in his face.

Jeff Landau enjoyed the layout shooting 11 pars and 1 birdie to take Low Gross with a 78. Not sure Sam Westen could have beaten this effort had he played on Sunday.

PS Lina BunterLina Bunter is thoroughly enjoying her golf with Tee Set and took the Low Net award with an impressive 67.   That by itself may very well bring her back next week so long as Norman’s nose isn’t put out of joint!

Jaco Zaayman struggled from a lack of match practice and leaked 12 strokes on a single hole to take Most Strokes.

Booby Prizes

Daniel Tandjung has taken a Skirt in his first two outings with Tee Set and deservedly gets a pat on the back from the treasurer. Others joining him were Douglas McQuater, Ian Barr, Jorge Gonzalez, scribe Keith Miller and Richard Holliday who, as a first timer, must have been wondering what the hell the cross dressing thing was all about.

Fuller, player by player results here – and more photos of the day on the Tee Set Gallery.

2014 Tee Set Match Play

Two matches played today with Chris Murchison beating Mark Howells 2 up while it took a birdie on the last hole to get Mark Bekkering into a a putt off before finally overcoming the Vice President of Most Things.

Tee Set Weekend at Lido Lakes

All the makings of a terrific event and we have seen a good start to bookings for the Tee Set Weekend at Lido Lakes on the 5th/6th July but, for those who intend playing but have not yet registered, can we encourage you to do it as soon as possible so that we can give the hotel a reasonable idea on the number of hotel rooms required?

While dubbed a family weekend, just a confirmation that this is just as much for Tee Setters who will be flying solo, you will have plenty of company!

Next Up

Another treat as we return to the ever popular Palm Hill – and this popularity despite its regularly producing a rich crop of skirt income for the Treasurer due, at least in part, to just how generously in front of  the blue tees its red tees are to be found :-(.

Sentul Sirkuit exit off the Jagorawi Tol, just like this week but, instead of hanging a left for Permata Sentul, it is straight on through the Sirkuit itself. If you are stopped by the Satpam then just shout “golup”!! at them – and they will let you through.

Green fees including compulsory shared cart are good value at 608,000 for a Premier League course which should be in peak condition right now. Tee off from 1 and 10 at 12pm if not a little earlier, so register at “Yes, I’m playing” if you are up for another treat in the sun.

Permata Sentul - mountain view
We are off down the Jagorawi Tol and the Sirkuit Sentul exit on Sunday for a round at the delightful Permata Sentul, a course that has been disgracefully neglected by us for nearly a year.

The delights of the course, unarguably the cutest caddies in Jakarta, green fees of a wallet-lite 700,000 including cart (no walking) and a decent tee off time of 11:00 has already seen registrations to date of nearly thirty, so it has all  the makings of what should be an excellent day in the sun.

Speaking of the sun, we witnessed so many exhausted Tee Set walkers coming off the relatively flat Senayan last Sunday that the cart-inclusive structure of the charge for the rather more challenging Permata Sentul is likely to appeal to most.

If you haven’t already, then sign up at “Yes, I’m playing” as usual so that we can advise the course of numbers and get the scorecards prepared. It really helps your scribe if you get your registration in before 3pm on Fridays as the cards are then printed at a certain kind company’s expense rather than his own.

2014 Tee Set Matchplay

Progress remains significantly ahead of the curve but don’t let that slow you down. Current situation in both brackets here.

Senayan National, Sunday 25th May 2014

Senayan view to the barNewcomers

The Day

One of the many attractions of Senayan National is its central location, a location so convenient for many, and pretty much all of us were to enjoy a short and relatively macet free journey to the course, the only exceptions being those who failed to take into account  “Walking Day” on Thamrin/Sudirman. Learning is a journey and not an event of course 🙂

An on-time start, great weather, a course in excellent condition (though a few of the greens were a little bumpy after a hard weekend of play – and all of them rather tricky), cute bilingual caddies (metres AND yards) and reasonably priced beer, at least if you bought them in front of the pro-shop, all made for an excellent day.

The consensus of Tee Set members is certainly that Senayan is a great venue for our Monthly Medal and your committee are working hard on extending the arrangement from its current end in July 2014.

Senayan’s opening shot in the process can mildly be described as avaricious but we have hopes that negotiation will bring their aspirations back down to earth. Tee Set’s principle leverage is that we fill their bloody course and bar/restaurant nicely on a Sunday afternoon, an afternoon when both would otherwise be nearly empty as far as we can see and chief negotiator on this occasion, Mike Garwood, has used the force of this simple logic to get negotiations back on track.

Newcomers

Just two Newcomers to report this week, Arne Rahnel and Daniel Tanjung, a warm Tee Set welcome to them both. Daniel came all the way from Kebon Jeruk to join the event and, if we are not mistaken, becomes our first member from Jakarta Barat.

Plenty of Welcome Backs on the other hand with Steve Harper leading the field at a very significant 54 weeks since last playing with us while Amanda Laverick came in second with a still very significant 26 weeks; and even remembered that she owed us 50,000 from all that time ago – and paid up. Well done Amanda.

In joint 3rd place came Dawn Rae, Harry Hill and James Young all at 26 weeks, with James so embarrassed at such a prolonged absence that he made a significant donation to Tee Set funds! Really was no need James – but much appreciated 🙂

We have had a run on Tee Set shirts with 4 more sold today and stocks are now exhausted on all but the smallest sizes and we are considering doing a limited run for those looking for the larger sizes.

Drop us a line if you would like a Tee Set shirt or corner the Vice President of Quite a Lot of Things in one of his rare moments of free time.

The Play

Prizes

Mike GarwoodDespite the mental turmoil of the contract extension, Mike Garwood was to enjoy a splendid day’s golf and garnered 42 points to win the Stableford based Monthly Medal, pipping James Ross for the VDoor voucher worth 500,000 roops, though James was to take no little consolation in his Slaney’s Meat voucher for the same amount by winning Low Net.

1st Birdie shared by Sam Westen (yes, he’s back after a relative break of exactly one week – he leads the attendance table with 19 rounds this year) and Koen Verhayen for striking on their second holes as played, however, Pieter Groen disputed the call after the money had gone out – it turned out he had a birdie on his first hole played which happened to be hole #10.

The lesson here is fill in all the boxes on your custom designed Tee Set score card which makes it so much easier for Brenda’s to get the results right. And the number you record for 1st eagle, 1st birdie, 1st sandy and 1st par >=30 is the hole number as played and NOT necessarily the hole number which may very well be different – as clearly noted on the weekly Tee Set scorecard but not the Monthly Medal scorecard as we ran out of space 😦

Sam boosted his day’s earnings further by whacking the ball 311 yards on the Long Drive hole. Most of he rest of us were quite happy to get to Sam’s long drive marker in two shots 😦

Nearest to the pin went to Erik Milfors with a shot to within a little less than. A great effort on such a viciously slopping green.

James shifts sand, quite a lot of it ......

James shifting sand, quite a lot of it …… in the second of three attempts to escape from this bunker 😦

Low Putts shared by Mel Meeds and Xandy Cuneo with a relatively high 29 putts which tells you something about the trickiness of  Senayan’s greens. Mel got the Cecelia’s Cafe voucher and Xandy the 6 Santi’s Premium Pies. 20 minutes in an oven preheated to 220 centigrade, Xandy.

Harry H1st par >= 30 handicap to Davin Kort in only his second venture out on grass – and his first ever par. Well done, Davin – but don’t give up the day job just yet.

1st Sandy to Harry Hill was not the toughest decision your committee had to make all day as he had not one, but three of them. Where your scribe comes from that counts as showing off. Anyway Harry was so happy that he decided to eat his prize money.

Most Improved of 10 shots went to all of Clyde Wickiser, Ric Wymer and Noemi Roos. In a moment tinged with conflict of interest challenges, the Vice President of Lots of Things decided to give 100,000 to each of them.

Clyde is by the way our longest-serving active Tee Set player with 30 years of participation. With each passing year of golf he dreams of the elusive Nirwana, shooting his age off the stick though, with his handicap now blowing out above 20, his dream could remain just that. A dream.

Booby Prizes

Fuller player by player details here while more photos of the day are on our photo website.

Cash Grant

The Tee Set e-mail inbox had the good fortune to receive an e-mail this morning from the World Bank.

Good day, I represent the World Bank Group. Your email address was submitted by the google search directory qualifying you for a cash grant. For comprehensive details send a reply with subject “Cash Grant”. CONGRATULATIONS!

Mr.  Wei Li (Representative), World Bank Group, weili08@mit.edu

We were a little sceptical at first but with the “World Bank” and the “Massachusetts Institute of Technology” involved  and Google having “submitted” the list of those qualified surely establishes its bona fides beyond all reasonable doubt – and we are in!!

No doubt Nathan will confirm the bona fides.

Next Up:

A little bit of a treat as, due to some other factors coming into the equation, we will be playing the lovely Permata Sentul next Sunday rather than Pangkalan Jati – which means that the Presidential BBQ is delayed a little, to just when will be advised later.

Inexplicably, it is almost a year since we played this really nice course with arguably the cutest caddies in Jakarta. We will certainly be there again once more in the second half of the year. A Tee Time of 11am off 1 and 10 and attractive green fees, including shared cart, of 700,000 roops – and a pitcher of beer thrown in for each flight. Another no brainer.

If you find all that irresistible then sign up here.

SenayanThe ever popular monthly medal at Senayan on Sunday of course and, with registrations for the event already well over 50% of our newly advised limit of 60, don’t delay registering any longer if you want to join in what is always a great Tee Set day in the heart of the city.

Green Fees etc. of 500,000 roops – with an extra 250,000 if you choose to use a shared cart on what is probably the most walkable course in the Jakarta area. With apologies to the late, great Frank Sinatra, If you can’t walk it there, you can’t walk anywhere.

Red Nose Benefit at the VDoor

If you haven’t anything else planned for Saturday night then an excellent way to spend it, and benefit some excellent charities at the same time, would be to slide along to the V Door in Kemang for the Red Nose event being held there from 7-11 pm.

A live Band, some great VDoor food including yabbies/crawfish, cute entertainment from the Red Nose Kids and free flow beer and wine – and all for just 350,000 roops.

A no-brainer in fact and an event well worth supporting – and we don’t tee off on Sunday morning  until 11 🙂

See yah Sunday!! … Tee Set

PS a reminder that valuables have gone “missing” in the past from the Senayan lockers. Do not leave anything of greater value in them than you would be willing to shrug off.

Pangkalan Jati, Sunday 18th May 2014

From the dark side

emerging from the dark side

The Day

A (comparatively) early morning of blissfully light traffic meant that many were congregating the Pangkalan Jati clubhouse fully two hours before the alleged tee off time of 11:30 – when they were to find the service and food all very good – and the beer prices a most pleasant surprise after the likes of Jagorawi, Sentul Highlands and Senayan  though it was a bit of a shock on the downside later on to find the historic beer stop after the par 3 16th being no longer in action.

Starter performance in getting us away half an hour was to attract a gratuity once again and the course was in pretty reasonable nick, though most of the greens were on the slow side.

Welcome backs

Only one Newcomer to report in Mark Sawyer who was to shoot a creditable 89. Welcome, Mark.

Other than On Shenman there were not too many notable Welcome Backs this week, in terms of weeks since played though the return of long-time member, Clyde Wickiser, after only 6 weeks was good news.

Clyde used his caddy of some 20 years as ever, for info Clyde is the senior of the team!

Clyde was up to his old habits and talked politics from the time he arrived until his leaving for home. The only difference this time was it was Indonesian politics rather than Barack Obama!

Ivan Byriel was bemoaning to all who would listen that his handicap is down to a level where he can no longer win the 1st par over 30 (something he has had a stranglehold on for last 5 or more years). 3 months back in the jungle will help Ivan.

Coming to the 7th Tee, the Immediate Past President of Everything’s flight was rather surprised to find the group in front still milling around the tee box after, it was learned, several minutes of fruitless searching for a tee, yes, a bloody tee!

The tee’s owner, Chris Smith, looked particularly depressed at his loss and left to play his second shot looking so unhappy that Ric’s flight continued the search and eventually found it five metres behind the tee box.

You will see from the photo just how delighted Chris was to be reunited with his wandering tee – “it’s a wonderful tee” Chris told Ric as the latter formally handed it back to a happy Chris at the 8th tee box.

Also on the chuckle front, the President of Some Things found himself having to explain to secretary Brenda today that Tee Sets 1st Par over 30 prize category referred to handicap and not age 🙂

Santi’s Premium Pies samples were well received and polished off quickly; and will become a minor Monthly Medal sponsor in the future as you will read below.

With so many nationalities represented in our ranks we will be mentioning them as they come along from now on; today if was Norwegian Constitution Day – and Oddvar Knardal celebrated it with what we can only imagine was a Norwegian folk dance – before declaring that PJ is not his favourite course 🙂

Finally, we were able to give out plenty of the score card wallets today; may thanks once again to Geoff and Kojo for their sponsorship of this item which will be an especially valuable accessory when it rains.

The Play

Prizes

JamesAfter some rather indifferent recent form it all came good for James Ross today, highlighted by some great driving which went their usual huge distances – but very often finishing on the fairway, something which is rather less usual – helping him to take Low Net with a 68, just pipping Alistair Livingston’s 69.

A happy NeilWith the Young Guns both absent for the first time in a long time, Neil Mullins took advantage, and did his chances of a rapid return to the Interleague team no harm at all by shooting his second best ever Tee Set round with an 80 off the stick – and take Low Gross in the process.

“It’s a funny old game” as they say in football – and it appears to apply equally in golf; to prove it Mel Meeds took just 25 blows with the flat one today to take Low Putts – a startling 16 fewer blows than he took at Matoa in January when winning Monster Putter on that occasion!

Booby Prizes

Johnny TJohnny Tommerbakk may have taken some consolation from Mel’s experience as he stood to be pictured with the Monster Monkey having taken a “winning” 40 putts today.

From Zero to Hero can happen – and Johnny was to take further balm from sharing the 1st Birdie award.

A useful crop of skirts to keep the Treasurer happy, with Keith Miller back in the winners circle after an unusually long 10 weeks absence. Well done all, we need the money.

Fuller, player by player results can be found here – and here many more photos of the day.

2014 Tee Set Matchplay

Further progress in the match play with two matches played at PJ today:

Mike Garwood beat Craig Binks 2 up in a match that went to the 18th

Peter Reichlmeier beat Paul Evison 1 up

The President of Some Things described his own match as a race to the bottom which opponent Paul was only to win on the last hole. Work that one out.

The full situation after today’s games is pretty encouraging in terms of progress so, please keep it up; at this rate there is every chance of not having to wait for Tee Set Championship day for the denouement.

Lido Lakes weekend – 5th/6th July

While in the works since January, somewhat extended negotiations have stopped us from sharing many details for this Tee Set family weekend at Lido Lakes until now.

With negotiations now complete you can find probably more than you need to know here – and can also sign up for what should be another great Tee Set event.

Next up

The last Sunday in the month falls rather early in May so it is off to Senayan for all the fun of the Monthly Medal with the major prizes as usual from the V Door in Kemang and Slaneys Meats for the Stableford and Low Net respectively while there is a voucher from Cecelias’s Cafe for 1st Birdie – and for the first time six of Santi’s Premium Pies for Low Putts, a category disgracefully neglected in previous Medal events in Santi’s view – and indeed Chris Murchison’s.

Tee off will be from 1 and 10 at 11:00 with green fees of 500,000 walking or 750,000 with a shared cart as usual.

Following 70 players turning up for last month’s medal, we are told by Senayan that our numbers are restricted to just 60 in the future,  so it would be as well to register early if you are keen to play next Sunday, as participation will be on a first-come first-served basis.

See yah at Senayan!! …. Tee Set
