Next up: Pangkalan Jati, Sunday 11th May 2014

Pangkalan JatiOn Sunday we are, after some shuffling about and unavailability, back to our “go to” course in a crisis, Pangkalan Jati.

Don’t get us wrong, Pangkalan Jati was the Tee Set’s home course for years, offering as it does a decent bit of grass, reasonably priced green fees, cheap beer and decent food, all most admirable qualities.

Ok, the caddies are all rather old and gnarled in the main and don’t own a handbag between them but the last 18 months or so has seen the quality of the course improve significantly and it is now firmly in the middle of the pack.

Green fees including cart of 545,000 or 445,000 using Shank’s Pony.

Tee off at 11:00 but with every prospect of getting away early so don’t cut it too fine or everyone else may already be out there by the time you arrive.

With the weather now wonderful most days, at least through mid-afternoon, this is not one to miss, so if you haven’t done so already then do sign up here as usual.

The fine Tee Set Scorecard Wallets kindly sponsored by Geoff Thwaites’ Kojo will also be available to all who have played 5 rounds or more with Tee Set this year.

Tee Setters

You may have wondered why Brenda has been taking pictures of all and sundry over the last few months. At least part of the reason can be found in the new menu item you will see above, “Tee Setters“.

Santi’s Premium Pies

PieSanti’s pie business is now open for business and, to make sure we all understand just how good they are, she will be bringing plenty of them along for a late breakfast on Sunday so that you can try them out – they will be served as hot as is possible given the 4 kilometre journey from her oven to the course.

Norwegian Constitution Day is the National Day of Norway and observed on May 17 each year so Santi promises that all sons and daughters of Norway playing Tee Set on Sunday are guaranteed a full pie to themselves, and a Bintang to wash it down!!

Conflict of Interest Declaration: the author of this post sleeps with the proprietor of Santi’s Premium Pies every night.

See yah Sunday!!! ….. Tee Set

Jagorawi New Course, Sunday 11th May 2014

Le Mans start

The usual Interleague Le Mans start ….

The Day

A really enjoyable day of golf at Jagorawi even though it was to get extremely hot for the final holes of the round. The course was in very good condition, though the thick rough around the greens seems to swallow the ball deeper each time we play there 😦

In a pleasing development, with a majority of  the regular Tee Setters involved for the first time in the shotgun start,  the first two groups back in the club house were Tee Set flights which makes a pleasant change from being the last in with the Interleague awards already done and dusted and people on their way home.

Newcomers

Just one Newcomer to report in the shape of Johnny Tommerbakk, a warm Tee Set Welcome to him.

Two extraordinary Welcome Backs in John Thompson, on a flying visit from home in Abu Dhabi, who has not played with us for 76 weeks while topping even that was Peter Groen, with our biggest ever Welcome Back at an awe inspiring 161 weeks. Peter had lost none of his winning ways, taking longest drive for B players on the day.

Wina’s Queen of the Late Arrivals crown is showing signs of slipping as Tetty once again played in the last group after showing up after most people had their rounds well under way.

Secretary Brenda was especially industrious with the camera today and you will find lots of pictures of the day in our Gallery.

The Play

Prizes

25 Tee Setters played on the day including 8 also involved in the Interleague match against Tin Cups of course.

Chris MDespite what you see above, the usual shuffling about to spread the prizes – compounded by putt concession invalidating some scores, the major honour this week goes to Mike Garwood for his 72 off the stick while Chris Murchison took Low Gross with an 82.

Simon Reynolds took some solace for his Interleague Matchplay loss in securing Low Putts with 29 blows with the flat blade.

Amongst the minor prizes most notably was Carolyn Taylor’s second in a row Most Improved with 7 – but a far cry from the 17 improvement last time she played and won the prize!

Booby prizes

Just a couple of skirts today on a course which usually produces rather more for the Treasurer with only Jaco Zaayman and Johnny Tommerbakk joining the cross dressers with Tommy also taking Most Strokes on a hole with a relatively modest 11 (it will get better Tommy!) while Anirudh Jain took Monster Putter with 42.

Fuller, player by player results can be found here.

Interleague

First up, the Immediate Past President of Most Things has to be congratulated for his efforts in single handedly organising the Interleague competition in the absence of any other committee members. It was noticed that for the second time in 3 weeks however that he presented himself to Sunday Tee Set without a Tee Set shirt on and the Committee members is currently mulling over the appropriate fine/penalty for outrageously poor dress sense. (Late breaking news: the penalty has already been applied, banned for one game and condemned to sharing a cart with Brenda for two hours riding around the course taking Interleague photos)

Even more importantly, the overall result was a Tee Set 6-4 victory over Tin Cups

After 7 straight singles victories Sam Westen finally showed he is human by losing to Joseph Peries, 4 and 3. In the other singles Simon Reynolds put up a great effort against an extremely talented young Indonesian National team lady, Ika, before going down by 2 and 1.

The Tee Set “Old Boys” were not to let us down with all three of the paired teams triumphing as follows:

Mike Garwood and Peter Reichlmeier won their match 5 and 3

George Bevege and Chris Murchison won their match 2 up

Geoff Thwaites and Mel Meeds won their match 2 up

 Next up

In a hastily rearranged fixture due to the Interleague moving to today without us noticing, and Pondok Cabe having a competition, we will be at the ever popular Pangkalan Jati next week.

Recent close inspection by a number of Tee Setters confirmed that PJ is in very good condition, perhaps as a result of their latest attempts to keep carts off the fairways – and will offer many unusual and sometimes unique challenges.

Tee time is 11:00 but there is every chance that acts specifically approved under the USA’s FCPA mean that we are likely to get away as much as half an hour earlier so don’t say you haven’t been warned Wina/Tetty/Others. Register at “Yes, I’m Playing” as usual.

Green Fees etc of 545,000 roops including shared buggy or just 445,000 walking.

See yah Sunday!! ……. cheers, Tee Set

Next Up: Jagorawi, Sunday 11th May

Tee Set are back to Jagorawi on Sunday for the usual fun and games but with the added spice of Interleague Round 3 when the team will take on Tin Cups as well as writing down their failures to reach the Ladies Tee.

A 9:30 mini-shotgun start for all and green fees of 955,000 roops including shared cart, a significant saving over Jags normal non-member rate for a Sunday morning. If you haven’t registered already then get your name up here as usual.

Tee Set Scorecard Wallets

Talking of writing down, we are very pleased to advise that wet Tee Set scorecards can be a thing of the past!

ScorecardThanks to the generous support and work of former President Geoff Thwaites, we now have 100 high quality scorecard wallets embossed with the famous Tee Set logo and that of our sponsor.

The wallets will be made available to any Tee Setter reaching 5 rounds with us this year – a list of those already qualifying is here, so, if you are on the list, make sure you claim yours from our Secretary, Brenda, next time you play Tee Set.

PS you are allowed to replace the tee with a pencil or whatever else you wish 🙂

Schedule

You may very well have noticed that there has been a slight reshuffle in the schedule with the Interleague moving forward to this coming Sunday and moving out Permata Sentul.

Unfortunately, Permata Sentul have a competition the following week and a straight swap of dates has proven impossible, so we will instead play the ever popular Pangkalan Jati on Sunday 17th May. Rather a shame as Permata Sentul is a really nice course with most delightful caddies so we will be rearranging a return for as early as possible in the second half of the year.

See yah Sunday!! … Tee Set

Matoa Nasional, Sunday 4th May 2014

Back at MatoaThe Day

Today saw Tee Set take the “long and winding road” to Matoa Nasional, however, traffic was strangely quiet and all pretty much arrived in good time. The booking was for 11.30 am however, and most happily, course management informed us we could tee off from tee boxes 1 and 10 from 11am and, as a result, we had all 12 flights on the course by 11.30. Good result.

Rounds were played in a fairly standard 4 1/2 hours, however, the pace was fantastic, everyone moving at the same speed with no waits or hold ups at all.  Thanks to all for their diligence in keeping the game moving and respecting players behind then. Thanks to all for cooperating with the President of Some Things impassioned plea, before the start of play, to get those score cards coming in quickly after the round, and before shower/massage/whatever. The cards were also pretty much mathematically correct on the whole and we were able to get to prize giving before almost anyone had left for home. This is how it should be, so let’s keep it up 🙂

NewcomersAnother healthy crop of Newcomers with Rod Ritson (of whom more later) introducing two of them while Mark Johnson also continued his one man recruitment campaign. Well done both.

Fantastic to see young Ghavy Puzey joining his Grandmother (yes, hard to believe!!), Nuri, and Matt Fairey at Tee Set for the very first time and enjoying himself so much. We all look forward to seeing you progress, Ghavy 🙂

Rumour has it that this was not only Davin Kort’s first Tee Set but also the first time he has moved from the driving range to the green grass of a golf course. Joining a single handicapper group including Sam Westen and Simon Reynolds must have been something of a baptism of fire but by all accounts he did well and kept pace with the “guns” while scoring a really not bad first effort of 119 off the stick.

A warm welcome to all five Newcomers, enjoy your golf with Tee Set! “Just” 9 Welcome Backs, after the tidal wave of them we saw at Senayan last week, most notably Geary Bowles who returned after 17 weeks to tell us that “work is a bitch at the moment”,  but we were in any event to get a very healthy turnout of 45 Tee Setters on the day to celebrate the return to our former HQ at Matoa Nasional.

Pleased to report that the new Matoa changing rooms are outstanding, as are the new top quality carts. While the course does continue to improve from last year’s dubious condition, there are still many bare spots and tight lies on the sides of the fairways and around the greens and tee boxes. The greens themselves however were  in pretty good nick we are happy to say, with the strongest evidence for this being the highest putts recorded of just 37 ….. by 5 Tee Setters!

The staff, service and food at Matoa are good – and their management of each person’s bill an object lesson to many other courses. Santi Miller’s Steak Pie samples before the round were to be universally well received, though George Bevege suggested they have more pepper in, to which the never slow Santi replied “bring your own pepper, George”!! Santi’s Premium Pies website is currently under construction and will be available shortly for making orders. Subdued traffic on the way home completed another very fine day for the 45 Tee Setters present. The Play Prizes

Rod gets his just rewards ..

Rod gets his just rewards ..

Having recently played his fifth game with Tee Set and acquired a handicap, Rod Ritson wasted no time making use of it with a sparkling Low Net of 66 to pip Geoff Thwaites’ fine 67. Well done, Rod, and expect attention from the handicap committee in the very near future 🙂

Sam Westen wins Low Gross so often that he is required to put it on his tax return, however, Simon Reynolds, who has been running him closer and closer in recent weeks, finally got there with a fine 75 off the stick to shade Sombrero Sam by a stroke.

Simon ponders what to blow his 100k onCongratulations to Simon – keep it up, Sam needs the competition.

Craig Binks “stole” Low Putts from Keith Miller by just 1 blow with the flat blade in taking 26 while Chris Murchison wasted no time in taking 1st Birdie at the very first hole though Chris Smith had to wait until the 6th hole to take 1st Sandy.

Peter Bush had a massive improvement of 11 strokes on his back 9 to secure Most Improved though was required to give back half his winnings for winning Most Strokes on a Hole with 11.

As we mentioned above, fully five players qualified for Monster Putter with 37 putts – a total so low that the President of Some Things, in an uncharacteristically kind hearted moment, decided that there would be no fines in the category this week.

But a single Skirt owned up to this week, so well done Jess, we need the money 🙂 bOOBY pRIZES More detailed player by player results here and all the photos taken on day can be found on our photo gallery.

2014 Matchplay Championship More excellent progress today in the Matchplay with 4 matches completed – and most of them going down to the line.

George Bevege beat Dan Richards 5 and 4

Paul Evison beat Jess Kindler 2 and 1

Craig Binks beat Chris Smith 2 and 1

Neil Mullins beat Alistair Livingston on the putting green after they were all square after 18 holes!

The first round match between the Marks,  Howell and Bekkering has passed the 30th April deadline without being played so it has been decided that the former goes into Bracket Emas and the latter into Bracket Kuningan. Interesting to note that both Winner and Runner up from 2013 are now out!!

2014 HOGFest

As previously advised, one of Jakarta’s outstanding events, the HOGFest, will take place next Saturday night at Senayan. A fantastic night of varied fun with tickets at just 700,000 roops including food, beers and soft drinks – and with proceeds going 100% to supporting Indonesian kids, most especially those born with the curse of cleft lip/palate – and also a number of orphanages.

Drop Ibu Rio a line if you want to reserve and pay for tickets or pick them up at the Satu Lagi Bar after 7pm on Thursday night and, if there are still tickets left, then you will be able to pay at the door on the night itself. Be there or be square.

Next Up Round 3 of Interleague next Sunday (and NOT Permata Sentul as previously scheduled) when all are invited to join even if you are not in the Tee Set Interleague team. Everyone, including those participating in the Interleague will also join in  the usual Tee Set format.

Green Fees of 955,000 including shared cart and a mini-shot gun start at 9:30 for the Interleague, and others at around 10am. Register here as usual. See yah Sunday! …. Tee Set

Next up: Matoa Nasional, Sunday 4th May

matoaWhile there was some concern over the deteriorating state of the fairways last year, Matoa was a popular home base for many, with those same fairways being relatively Tee Set friendly within an attractive course overall and this, plus welcoming and attentive staff and caddies and less than predatory pricing, kept us coming back for the popular Monthly Medal there.

Green fees of 690,000 roops including shared cart while walking is an attractive option at 540,000 on a notably walking friendly course.

We will tee off from 1 and 10 starting at 11:30, though we have every hope of getting away a little earlier, so don’t cut it too fine, Wina.

Jan JelinekLast time out at Matoa, Mel Meeds took the day’s honours with a Net 67, Sam Westen’s 78 was enough to take Low Gross while Jan Jelinek got up close and personal with the Monster Putter Monkey .

If you haven’t already then let us know if you are playing in  the usual way.

2014 Tee Set Matchplay

As promised you will find the current status on the Matchplay here. A couple of matches already scheduled for Matoa on the weekend sees the good progress to date continuing. Still plenty of time left to screw things up of course.

HOGS Day

The President of the Yayasan HOG has let us know that the take from Sunday’s smashing event at Senayan was 11,230,000 roops, great stuff, many thanks to all who supported what was a great day and one which seems certain to become an annual Tee Set fixture.

One for the diary

We have updated  the forward schedule to accommodate Pangkalan Jati on the 1st June after which the President of Some Things will be hosting a long overdue Tee Set barbecue at his place in Kemang. The previous ones have been great fun and featured unexpectedly great food and, rather less unexpectedly, oceans of things with which to wash it down 🙂

See yah Sunday!! ….. Tee Set

PS Cecelia’s Cafe

Cecelias

We somehow managed not to award the voucher from our generous sponsor,  Cecelia’s Cafe, at last week’s Monthly Medal at Senayan but, fear not, it will instead go to this week’s Low Net winner.

By way of apology to Cecelia’s Cafe, we share with you their latest menu of tasty offerings from which you will see that one of those vouchers will get you a nice lunch for two.

Cecelia’s cafe is located on the corner of Ampera Raya and and Pejatan Barat but reasonably local delivery is free for orders over 100,000 roops.

Please mention Tee Set when you order, we would like to encourage them to continue their sponsorship!

Senayan National, Sunday 27th April 2014

HOG breakfast heart starters ...

breakfast heart starters all round  …

The Day

NewcomersThe Tee Set Monthly Medal at Senayan is fast becoming something of an institution, invariably drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd of Tee Setters and, with a boost from the HOGS today, saw a new all-time record attendance for a regular Tee Set Sunday event of fully seventy players.

7 Newcomers joined an extraordinary 39 Welcome Backs, some of startling vintage, and 24 Regulars on a day that
was affected, but not marred by, a couple of bouts of heavy rain early on. A warm Tee Set welcome to all of those Newcomers, we hope you enjoyed  the unique atmosphere of our group and that we will see you back again soon.

Welcome Backs

Leading the pack of those 39 being welcomed back were a bunch of 4 HOGS – with Phil Weller being the “winner” at an extraordinary 70 weeks.

Another notable Welcome Back, after a 22 weeks absence, was Chazz Hassig, newly recovered from his wrist operation.

Chazz was to tell us that while he agreed that putting all the prize money on the day into the hands of the HOGS, a Tee Set without prizes was like a horse without a cart – and promptly insisted on donating 6 bottles of the finest to the prize fund.

Well done Chazz – and welcome back!

20140427_132521

Rain, what rain?

There were a few complaints about slowness of play and indeed it was not a quick round for some, but this should be seen in the context of the 70 players, or 18 flights, we put out there today – something which compares with our standard agreement with Senayan of just 50 players and the 60 they were eventually, and reluctantly, to agree to. And the rain stoppages didn’t help either.

Overall the club did well by us and deserves particular praise for fitting us all in.

As you will hopefully know, prize awards are contingent upon the winner being present when the prizes are being given out, a 30+ year Tee Set tradition that we are not going to change anytime soon. With one or two winners missing today, there was a bottle of Australia’s finest left over at the end and, after some vigorous bidding, this went to 34 week Welcome Back Jeff Durham for 1,250,000 roops to nicely supplement the HOGS take from the day which, from all sources, must have been around 10 million.

Well done Jeff – and well done to all for supporting the HOGS today – they all work hard for a great cause and are fully deserving of our support – and that support today, in the most meaningful terms, gave three Indonesian kids a future worth looking forward to, it is as simple as that.

Anyone who might like to more directly support the HOGS activities should get in touch with Ralph Duckworth or Ed Bender Junior. You really don’t need to own a Harley Davidson to participate (more than half of them don’t) just a willingness to give desperately needed service to the community. You would be welcomed with open arms.

Another 30+ year tradition unlikely to change real soon  is that a Tee Set handicap is required  to qualify for Low Net, Stableford and Matchplay prizes and events, and this requires a minimum of five scorecards to be registered in our handicap system, though we try to make it as easy as possible for Newcomers to achieve this by allowing cards from any course in the world to be submitted.

Finally, great to see the HOGS turning out in good numbers today to support us supporting them – come back soon y’all!

The Play

Prizes

OdiNo doubt about today’s big winner (we checked his card a much needed three times, he is an engineer after all) with an extraordinary 43 Stableford points in shooting a net 61 (sixty one), Oddvar Knardal who was later to put down his success to clean living and good beer. Well done Odi who took  the 500,000 roops V-Door voucher supplemented by a bottle of J&B Rare.

NuriWell done also to Nuri Puzi who took Low Net of 66 and the Slaney’s Meat Voucher for 500,000 and the other bottle of J&B Rare – and in the process saw off partner, and last year’s champion, Matt Fairey by 4 and 3 in the Tee Set Matchplay.

Other highlights were that rare bird the eagle, for Erik Milfors, and of course 1st Eagle  – and a Most Improved for Carolyn Taylor of 17 strokes in what must have been a quite extraordinary round of 58-41-99, a Nearest to the Pin for Bruce Hector at just 96 cm and a Longest Drive of 291 yards for Matt Fairey as some consolation for his early exit from the Matchplay.

Booby Prizes

Such a large turnout could be anticipated to see an equally large number of Skirts and we were not to be disappointed with a relatively rich haul of 10 would be cross-dressers, though the “winners” showed an amazing propensity for finding a reason not to be present when the skirts and wig were being handed out; c’mon guys, it is a badge of honour!!

RicWell done to Immediate Past President of Almost Everything, Ric Wymer, for doing the decent thing and taking Monster Putter with a relatively low 40 today while King Tirto’s 12 strokes on a hole found him in possession of Most Strokes for the week.

Fuller, player by player details here while there are a bunch more photos of the day on our photo website.

2014 Tee Set Matchplay Championship

Five results today with the stand-out being a 4 and 3 win by Anthony King over Sam Westen, and this despite the latter wining the day’s Low Gross with a 74 off the stick!

Graham McGeady conceded to George Bevege

Anthony King defeated Sam Westen 4 and 3

Frank Musgrove defeated Keith Miller 2 up

Simon Reynolds defeated Chazz Hassig 2 and 1

Nuri Puzey defeated Matt Fairey 4 and 3

The roar for Sam Westen being beaten in his matchplay was all in good humour of course and as anyone who know Sam would know, taken that way.

Sam is unbeaten for Teeset in the Interleague in 12 months of competition, a fine young fella and sets the pace for the rest of us Tee Set Hackers. The even bigger roar for past President, Ric Wymer’s  Monster Punter was, on the other hand, totally justified.

Matt’s loss ensures continued domestic harmony while Frank Musgrove’s win ensures that Keith Miller is condemned to play his wife in the next round.

Pleasing to see the progress to date in the matchplay, which in the past has had the adjective “glacial” applied to it more than any other; some credit surely to El Guapo who is guilty of “applying the whip” to good effect. We will include the current status in Thursday’s post so that you can see clearly your next opponent, get your match set up and thereby avoid Fernando’s further ire!

Next Up

A sentimental return to last year’s Monthly Medal venue next Sunday when we will have an opportunity to see if the fairways have improved over the rather poor state in which we left them.

Matoa is otherwise a most charming course and the always warm welcome from the club and staff means we have the makings of another fine Tee Set Sunday next week.

A tee time of 11:30 from 1 and 10 and green fees of 690,000 roops including shared cart, or 540,000 on foot on an eminently walkable course. Register here as usual to secure your place.

See yah Sunday!!! … Tee Set

Next up: Senayan National, Sunday 27th April

SenayanThe last Sunday of the month means a return to Senayan National in the heart of the city for all the fun of our Monthly Medal and its wide array of prizes, none of which are likely to endanger your amateur status but do come complete with priceless bragging rights. .

We are pleased to say that in our first venture into this area, the net proceeds of the day will be donated to the Tee Set’s favourite charitable organisation here in Jakarta, the Yayasan HOG, an organisation run by a bunch of  “charitable givers with a biking problem” who do an enormous amount of great work in supporting disadvantaged kids here in Jakarta, notably through the Gentur Foundation.

Around 100 kids with cleft palate and/or cleft lip have had their lives and prospects transformed with operations funded by the Yayasan HOG in 2013; let’s help them in their mission to help many more this year.

We have not yet been advised of the limit, if any, on our numbers for Sunday but it’s undoubtedly best to get your name down early just in case we need to apply the “first come first served” principle as our usual large numbers for Senayan are likely to be swollen by HOG golfers wanting to support the event.

Green fees of just 500,000 roops on Sunday, plus 250,00 if you share a cart. First tee time of 11:00 from tee boxes 1 and 10 – or perhaps more tees if the Immediate Past President of Most Things proves the worth of that silver tongue on the Senayan Management again.

See yah, Sunday!! … Tee Set

PS The report on Tee Set’s fun packed round at Pangkalan Jati will follow but only on Thursday – in the interim you may care to speculate on who got this amazing “hole in one” there on Sunday – and on which rule of golf applies!

Skirts

The Day

The Jakarta roads over Easter were as deserted as could be imagined, with most of the residents of the big Durian having disappeared in the Friday exodus to the popular holiday destinations of Puncak, Bandung and Anyar.

For those remaining in town, quicker then usual transit times from home to course were the order of the day though, for those taking taxis at least, the X factor as usual was whether the driver knew the way. Going through the Fatmawati market was a breeze for those taking that route – and reward for a very brave decision given its infamous record.

Our 20 starters at PJ all had stories to tell about their trips to the course but the end result was a tee time 30 minutes before our allotted time; a development that earned the PJ Starter a big enough tip to pay for his cigarettes for the next month.

Five flights were a great turn out for a Bandung Bash weekend, so many thanks to Ivan Byriel for taking over the organising responsibilities in the absence of our President of Some Things and Secretary Brenda who were both out of town enjoying themselves.

In fact organising 20 rather agreeable golfers was never going to be too much of a challenge for Ivan considering his day time job is running truculent land seismic crews in the deepest, darkest jungles of Indonesia.

Newcomer Hugo

Welcome back Bob

play more golf, Bob!!

Welcome to our sole newcomer this week, Hugo Doelman, who managed to get around the course despite a sprained ankle from playing hockey the day before.

Hugo is new to Indonesia and from the Netherlands but we suspect he had Welcome Back player Jason Van de Linde to discuss how gezellig Tee Set is.

Welcome Backs were a lot busier at 11 players, or more than half the pack, and headed by Bob Fleischmann who played his first round with us since the 2013 Tee Set Championship back in November, while Su and Marshall Jones had their first run out of 2014. Bob made a bit of meal of it by recording his worse score in memory.

The only way back to form is to play more golf with Tee Set, Bob 🙂

The Play

Prizes

SofreeNeil Mullins finally hit some form to take Low Gross with 84 while Sofree Abdul played his regular steady golf topped off with a birdie on the 18th to secure Low Net with a fine 69.

Matt Fairey tied with Sofree for Low Putts with 26 to take the money while 1st Birdie went to Jiro, first Sandy Par to Ric and Most Improved to KK with 13 strokes. Marshall Jones rounded off the prizes with his 1st Par for a 30+ handicapper.

Deep throatOur Monkey Monster has been subjected to many indignities over his lifetime but experienced an unwelcome first today as Mike Harling celebrated winning Most Putts with the Monkey Monster’s longest and deepest ever French kiss!!

An astonishing 35% of the Tee Setters playing contributed to making Ric, with his Treasurer’s hat on, a very happy man by failing to reach the Ladies Tee and getting a Skirt this week as you will have seen above. Perhaps the most notable catch was Matt Fairey who had failed to cross-dress since 16th September 2012!

More detailed player by player results here.

2014 Tee Set Matchplay

Craig Binks was pushed to the brink by Nuri Puzey with their match going right to the last hole before Craig finally secured his place in Bracket Emas. And it goes without saying that Nuri Puzey against Matt Fairey in Bracket Kuningan should be an interesting tussle!

Next up

With 45 already registered for Sunday’s  V-Door Monthly Medal at Senayan National, you are strongly encouraged to get your name down now just in case we need to apply the “first come first served” principle.

If you have already registered then you will play – and all participants will be confirmed by e-mail on Saturday.

As you will be aware, the net proceeds of the day will be donated to the Tee Set’s favourite charitable organisation here in Jakarta, the Yayasan HOG, an outfit run by a bunch of  “charitable givers with a biking problem” and a bunch of guys and gals who do an enormous amount of great work in supporting disadvantaged kids here in Jakarta, notably through the Gentur Foundation.

The Yayasan’s biggest annual event is the famous HOGFest, to be held this year at the Maggala Wanabanti on Gatot Sabroto in Senayan on the 10th May. A fantastic evening is promised as ever and tickets will be available on Sunday from any of the many HOGS supporting the event.

Green fees of just 500,000 roops on Sunday, plus 250,00 more if you share a cart. First tee time of 11:00 from tee boxes 1 and 10 – or perhaps more tees if Wina’s current endeavours are successful.

See yah, Sunday!! … Tee Set

Easter bunny

Something of a schedule conflict on Easter Sunday of course, though we reckon that if you get up early enough then you can get to church, hide and find the kids Easter eggs and still be out at Pangkalan Jati in good time for the 11:30 tee time.

Pangkalan JatiGreen fees including shared cart of just 460,000 – or 360,000 walking on what is an eminently walkable course.

If you plan on joining the fun then please register here if you haven’t already. We have 8 flights which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The Day

Tee Setters are relatively unaccustomed to the “crack of dawn” 9:30 start that Jagorawi provides us with on one Sunday a month during the Interleague season but, while 29 managed it today, former Tee Set Vice President Lucas Sheard thought he was still in the 90’s when tee off was usually 10:30 at Pangkalan Jati though, happily, both he and the equally late coming Tetty managed to get to the first tee box in time to find a group.

The New Course was in great shape, the greens a little slow but easy to get adjusted to. The longish rough around the greens was the downfall of many, with comments such as “they getting ready for an international tournament or what?” being heard; there is of course only sure fire remedy for long rough … don’t go in there.

Heavy rain interrupted proceedings on the back 9 but luckily this happened around the 15th tee box with its strategically placed and well stocked drinks kiosk . Nevertheless not all groups hung in there so only 15 completed cards were to make it back to the scorer.

Anirudh JainA rich crop of Newcomers this week with Anirudh Jain (pictured), David Beenie, Imran Marzuki, Mike Arnold and Steve Sutton all playing their first round with Tee Set. A big Tee Set welcome to them all

Lucas SheardHuge Welcome Back of course to one time Tee Set vice president and current Bali Classic Champion, Lucas Sheard. The Immediate Past President of Everything had seen Lucas play in the Classic and immediately cut his handicap by two strokes but that was not enough to stop Lucas tying for Low Nett.

Many, many more Welcome Backs but the stand-out was surely Harvey Hayman, absent for fully a year!

The Play

Jags

Low gross went to Steve Wood with 83.

Low nett was shared between Geoff Thwaites and Lucas Sheard with 75.

First birdie on #1 was Ric Wymer.

First Sandy Mel Meeds at #16.

Most Improved was Jess Kindler with 13.

Most strokes was Tetty with 11.

Skirts? …  only one recorded although that may very well mean that only Tom Grace was man enough to come forward.

Interleague

As usual the team looked strong on paper, however, as per the first round, our opponents, Jakarta Loose Impediments played some very good golf, to their handicaps and proved hard to beat and the mtch ended in a 5 and 5 tie.

Sam Westen continued his unbeaten Interleague streak winning 2 and 1. Simon Reynolds was unlucky, at 1 up with 2 to play when the rain interrupted, and the gentlemanly thing to do was call it all square and seek the refuge of the clubhouse.

The battle hardened team of Peter Reichlmeier and Geoff Thwaites were reunited for the day and got the job done with a 5 and 4 win. Chris Murchison and Steve Wood battled hard all day but were always one or 2 holes down and the match concluded that way. Nice to see big Steve playing some regular golf again and his game coming back into line. 38 on the front 9 with a double bogey adequate proof but as stated not good enough to win the match.

Mike Garwood and Mel Meeds met a rampaging opposing team that could not be tamed and were well beaten 5 and 4. Something of a mixed weekend for Mike therefore having won his Tee Set Matchplay against David Baglivo 4 and 3 the previous day. Apparently Dave struggled on the twice around Jags Z-9 cunningly demanded by Mike!

Next Up Pangkalan JatiThere was a time when Pangkalan Jati saw a whole lot more of Tee Set than they do nowadays, when a rather more varied diet of the many fine courses in the Jakarta area is the order of the day. So it is that nearly three months have passed since our last visit which saw Tee Set playing the first Monthly Medal of the year there, this in the hiatus between Matoa and Senayan National.

The charms of the course are undoubted, however, with a wider variety of holes available than on any other course in Jakarta with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 11th, 17th and 18th all presenting their own unusual  if not unique challenges.

A man who certainly found Pangkalan Jati’s charms to his taste last time out was George Bevege who swept the board in the major prize categories with the most Stableford points (40) to win the V Door Monthly Medal, Low Net and Low Putts with a nearly unbelievable 24 swipes with the flat blade. Not that he actually got more than one prize of course 🙂

Adding to the course’s charms are good food and beer at reasonable prices though, on the downside, the age and gender profile of the caddies are not to the taste of all. Green fees including shared cart of 460,000 roops, or 360,000 walking, can only be described as wallet-lite and, unless you are particularly unlucky then access is not too much of an issue either.

Tee off will be from both 1 and 10 at 11:30 though we are limited to 8 flights or 32 players so do register early if you want to join in the fun.

See yah Sunday! ….. Tee Set

PS Geoff Thwaites tells us that there are still a few spare slots for the Bandung Bash coming up this weekend so do give him a call on 0811 706 237 if you fancy some golf and socialising in the mountains!
