Jagorawi New Course _ hole 15Jagorawi is perhaps the most famous of all Indonesia’s fine golf courses from an international perspective, invariably featuring in those top 100 Golf Course coffee table tomes.

The Old Course is usually the target of those tomes, however, the New Course is almost as attractive, certainly as challenging – and with the benefit of being able to hire a cart, though we do see that the club is bowing to modern trends and cart paths are currently being put in on the Old Course.

Tee Set participates in the Jakarta Interleague each month from March to October though within the normal Tee Set Sunday framework with all its usual requirements for scoring and prizes – and skirts unfortunately.

Green fees of 955,000 roops including shared buggy and with a first tee time of an earlier than usual 9.30am.

If you haven’t already then sign up here for what promises to be a fun day at Jagorawi.

Newsflash

Nicky Moir is shortly returning to kith and kin in bonny Scotland after a fun packed time in the Big Durian,  time which included 29 rounds with Tee Set. Nicky is keen to hit a few more OBs and say farewell to his Tee Set mates and maybe even have a few drinks with them, before he goes – so join us at Senayan at 11:00 on Wednesday if you can, and help ensure Nicky gets an appropriate send off. Green fees are a bargain basement 400,000 roops for a great course.

We have 15 already lined up for the day but there are more spaces available in the 5 flights we have booked. Let Keith Miller know if you want to fill one of them.

The Day

20140406_114257Travel to the course on the day was something of a breeze if a rather prolonged breeze at around 75 minutes from Kemang – though immediately rewarded with breakfast on the lovely terrace of the Rainbow Hills clubhouse in delightful weather conditions.

Those delightful conditions did not last too long for the 39 Tee Setters who set off a little ahead of the scheduled time of 12:30, however, as a light rain set in almost immediately and was followed, after a few holes, by some very significant Hujan which was to drive us all off the course and into various bolt holes where fine Anker Bir was to distract some, not least with its on-course price of 56,000 roops a can 😦

No worries, Tee Setters are made of sterner stuff than your common or garden weekend golfer and the rain stopped, and play resumed within half an hour when the sun also came out to help dry things up pretty quickly – and put a smile back on the Tee Set’s face, though the Grumpy Pirate’s contract for Pawang Hujan services is now under review. Welcome Backs

No Newcomers for the first time in many weeks but some significant Welcome Backs. most notably former Tee Set President Clyde Wickiser returning to the fold for the first time in just over the year, Nick Shearman who has been away so long that he forgot to pay his Tee Set fee, and Noemi Ross and Dean Kirt who had not been seen since the Tee Set Championship in November.Welcome back to them all – we missed you!

General agreement that Rainbow is a great venue and one that we must return to at least once more this year. Your committee has taken due note.

The Play Prizes Mark HowellsAnother fine round from Mark Johnson to take Low Net for the second week in a row, this time with a 41-40-81-13-68. Mark will be less happy to know that, such are the vagaries of the USGA Handicapping system that his handicap will shortly be dropping like a stone !

Dan Richards played his best round of the 14 he has now played with Tee Set to finish just one stroke behind Mark. Happily, for Dan at least, this coincided with his Matchplay with Dean Kirt who, showing a little rustiness after such a long absence, was put to be put to the sword in a 7 and 6 loss to Dan.

Dan goes on to meet the winner of the Grumpy Pirate v Pulpy Bevege clash while Dean playe the winner of the Ian Barr/Cucu clash. Death, taxes and Sam Westen winning Low Gross? Yep, the same sort of inevitability and even Simon Reynolds now playing his best golf since joining us in late 2012 was a full 5 strokes away in second place. Cross DressersSimon would have been closer to Sam if he had avoided the cross-dressing fate he shared with 6 others on Sunday by failing to reach the ladies tee for the first time ever in his case; those joining him on the trans-gender walkway included the Immediate Past President of Everything who had, for him, an horrendous first 9 of 55 but righted the ship somewhat on the back with a rather more respectable 46 and take Most Improved as some consolation.

A remarkable run of 6 single putts on the back 9 by Mark Fiorello saw him to Low Putts of 29 blows with the flattest club in his bag, and a count back win from the Grumpy Pirate, Pulpy and Mike Webb.

More detailed, player by player results can be found here.

Shot of the day was Nathan Belete hitting the flag stick on the full with his tee shot on the par 3 #17. Could have easily bounced into the cup which would have put enormous pressure on his credit card rating.

Next Up

We are at Jagorawi on Sunday for the usual Tee Set and also Round 2 of Interleague when 8 of our our brave Lads and Lad-ettes will also take on Jakarta Loose Impediments to see if we can get our title bid back on track. A tee time of 9:30 and green fees including shared buggy for one of Jakarta’s premier courses of 950,000 roops. Sign up here if you haven’t done so already.

Ric and Peter will be contacting all the Usual Suspects and more to make sure we have as strong a team as possible for the fixture, so don’t switch your phone off.

See yah Sunday!! …. Tee Set

Next up: Rainbow Hills, Sunday 6th April 2014

Rainbow-Hills Rainbow Hills, a quite scrumptious piece of work, awaits the Tee Set on Sunday after a break of several years.

While challenging, Rainbow is a pretty fair course and possessed of a reasonable percentage of Tee Set friendly (ie wide) fairways and, however you play, you will have enjoyed the course and its views and be ready for the first class food in the palatial clubhouse.

Green Fees of a not unreasonable 750,000 roops including shared buggy, however, a rather late first tee off time of 12:30. Every hope of getting away early so don’t be late, plan on getting there no later that 11:30 as we have flights to sort out as well.

If you are not one of the nearly 30 already registered then get your name down here for what promises to be another great Tee Set Sunday.

See yah somewhere over the rainbow, Dorothy … Tee Set

PS It is young Nicky Moir’s farewell to Jakarta round at Senayan National at 11am next Wednesday, 9th April. We have negotiated a special rate of 400,000/pax walking for 5 flights. Please let Chris Murchison know if you intend joining what is likely to be a fun day with Nicky promising to add significantly to his already impressive total of OBs during his relatively short, but never a dull moment, 16 months in Jakarta.

Senayan, Sunday 30th March 2014

Ready for the frayThe Day

Fully fifty Tee Setters turned up at Senayan National on a day of delightful weather blessedly free of rain and with the course in pretty much prime condition.

Great course to get to for most of us as well, and today all were pleasantly surprised not to get caught up in any of the promised political rally traffic around Senayan, we guess Indonesians take holidays seriously.

Once again we were given our own meeting room to play in due to Honda flogging cars in the main area. This makes everything a little more intimate and friendly so let’s hope they have sales conventions there on the last Sunday of every month. If they had increased  the number of servers to meet the significant needs of those 50 hungry and thirsty Tee Setters then that would have made it just about perfect.

Significant last minute shuffling of the groupings is to be expected on such a busy day and this time John Suermondt found himself being bumped from the second group to the last. Hardly a word of complaint from John and he went on to be rewarded for his forbearance as you will read later. Next time we will try for a mini shotgun start from more then two tee boxes.

Despite the last groups going out an hour or more after the first, there were plenty of people still around for prize giving as there were so many prizes on offer this week while Brenda has got the results recording down to a fine art – and an increasingly short lived one at that.

Tee Setters by country of originFour Newcomers  to welcome this week in Erik Milfors, Karen Khetean (KK), Peter Riddell Carre and Tokujiro Kamigatakuchi (Jiro); have fun with Tee Set guys!

Jiro is our first ever player from Japan which becomes  the 29th country to take part in Tee Set since 1-1-2012 – something which made us think about the table to the left where you will also see that Australia is number one, in terms of sheer numbers of players anyway!

A enormous list of Welcome Backs, doubtless attracted in part at least by the course – and headed by Richard Mau who has not darkened our door step since December 2012 for a total of 67 weeks. Richard kindly added yet another prize, a free night’s stay at the very nice JS Luwansa hotel in Rasuna Said

Other Welcome Backers of of note were Mark Fiorello at 28 weeks (away so long he had to ask who the current president was) and at 19 weeks were Steve Wood, Anthony King and Cate McCosker with the last round for the three of them being the 2013 Tee Set Championship.

The Play

A temporary (we hope) database glitch means that we can’t give you the full results at this time, however, here are the headlines:

Results

Shane RawlesStar performance from Shane Rawles to win the V Door Monthly Medal for highest number of Stableford Points, though on a count-back from the unlucky Immediate Past President of Everything who took the Slaney’s Meats voucher for 500,000 while Mark Johnson hit an impressive 4 under his handicap to take Low Net.

In a development that will surprise exactly nobody, Sam Westen took Low Gross with a 74 off the stick while Keith Miller won Low Putts with 28, something he attributed to “hardly being able to hit a green in regulation today“. He also took the the full-on Aussie breakfast at Ceceili’s cafe prize for his troubles.

Bruce Hector took some consolation for losing his Matchplay with closest to the pin and the JS Luwansa hotel voucher.

Welcome Back Mark Fiorello didn’t take long to get into the swing of things again with a birdie on the 2nd to take 1st Birdie while Craig Ewers didn’t even that long in securing 1st Sandy.

KKA relatively modest haul of just seven skirts on a course that yielded a new record of 12 of the things last time out; who said Tee Setters can’t learn?!?!?

Newcomer KK quickly found the hard side of Tee Set life having to cough up 50,00 for his 46 putts and Monster Putter on the day.

All in all, another great Monthly Medal Day at Senayan, we fear the committee may have stumbled into another great decision.

2014 Matchplay

Four more results from Senayan today

–          Anthony King beat Koen Verheyen 7 and 6

–          Mel Meeds beat Neil Mullins 5 and 3

–          Sam Westen beat Bruce Hector in a putt off

–          John Suermondt beat Wina Nugraha 5 and 4

Anthony and John

Well at least Anthony was colour coordinated!

Great performance by Bruce to take Sombrero Sam to the putting green.

In past years Wina has been one of the most competitive players in match play but this year she has  the dubious honour of being the first to exit the competition after being beaten convincingly by a rampaging John Suermondt.

The  full current Matchplay situation can be found here.

Unfortunately, the remaining unplayed matches are cancelled.

header_wesite_rainbow_hills_golf_chWith Rainbow Hills after Senayan and Senayan after Sentul Highlands; we have probably never had it so good. A stunning mountain course with excellent facilities, Rainbow will undoubtedly prove a hit with the many Tee Setters who have yet to play the course while the battle hardened will be fully aware of the delights ahead of them.

Like Sentul Highlands last week, Rainbow has been off the Tee Set Calendar for some years as the scissors of its price aspirations met the rock of Tee Set frugality. Happily a little tough negotiating by our tough little negotiator was to finally wear them down and 750,000 including shared cart is in our price range, though they were unwilling to give us better than a 12.30 Tee off – but did indicate a willingness to advance on this if their tournament finishes earlier, which it should. Message? – get there in good time.

Finding Rainbow is not so difficult, just take the main Sentul City exit off the Jagorawi Tol and follow the signs. If you look it up on Google Maps you will find that they have managed to move the course quite a few kilometres north to Permata Sentul – so use “Padang Golf Bukit Tinngi” to do your searching instead

Register here as usual if you intend playing Rainbow on what should be a great day on a great course.

See yah Sunday! …. Tee Set

Next up: Senayan National, Sunday 30th March 2014

SenayanFeedback from Tee Setters after the first Monthly Medal in February at our new home at Senayan National was overwhelmingly positive and there is definitely a bit of a buzz in the air over our return on Sunday for the March event, demonstrated not least by nearly 40 players already committing to play.

Green Fees of just 500,000 walking for this fine course though a buggy will set you back another 250,000 – if you can get someone to share a buggy with you!

After Sentul Highlands, the start time from 2 tees seems a little early at 11:00 but with (say) 12 groups to get away, the last group will not go out until around midday and is unlikely to return until some time after 4.30 pm.

If you have not already done so then please let us know of your intention to play on Sunday by signing up here; we have a maximum of 14 flights or 56 Tee Setters which should be enough but be warned that, if there are restrictions, then first come first served will apply.

It is worth stating here our general policy on flights also reflects the principle of “first come, first served”. Clearly there are other considerations that have to be taken into account but it would be true to say that, most of the time, if you show up last then you play last – and vice versa.

Gucci Slacks

In case you were wondering, the “other  considerations” include our objective of relatively matched groups in terms of ability, pre-stated preferences for pairing and of course to get Matchplay opponents into the same flight.

Bribery also works.

Finally, a reminder that the Senayan lockers should not be mistaken for the vaults of Fort Knox and that you should not leave anything of significant value in there over and above your prized Gucci slacks.

Tee Set Matchplay 2014

While we know there are bound to be a few “sticky” ones later, there are early signs of willingness to get first round matches played – and with four more due to be fought out on Sunday at Senayan

Anthony King v Koen Verhayen

Bruce Hector v Sam Westen

John Suermondt v Wina Nugraha

Mel Meeds v Neil Mullins

Sentul Highlands, Sunday March 23rd 2014

SkirtsThe Day

It’s been some years since Tee Set played Sentul Highlands due to overly exorbitant green fees there but the view of the 37 Tee Setters who played it today under a special discount negotiated by Wina was, wow, great course!! So great in fact that we will ask Wina to work in another visit or two later in the year. Thanks Wina for making this happen.

A tough but fair course, well laid out with a variety of challenging holes, great food and attentive and polite staff – and all this surrounded by terrific mountain scenery.

A significant amount of money has been spent recently on amenity upgrades and the changing rooms were impressive, as long as you remembered to bring the score card wallet to open the locker’s electronic hand shake.

The caddies looked as if they had wandered in from a nearby beauty contest but the club’s pursuit of eye candy has meant that more time is paid to freshening the make-up than learning about how a putt might break – and with predictable consequences. Wina’s request for a senior caddie scored her a veteran campaigner, all of 23 years of age.

Four Newcomers today in Chris Chan, Kevin Glenton, Tetty Artatie and Tim Wallace all joining us for the first time, although the President of Somethings reckoned Tetty was in fact a firm candidate for the biggest Welcome Back of all time, something Tetty was not to deny. In any event, welcome to you all and we hope you enjoy your golf with Tee Set!

Despite a 12:30 tee off, the bonus of a shotgun start from 8 holes meant that everyone was able to finish before dark though it was touch and go for some as the rounds were a little slow with the fastest being 5 hours. Too many of us spending too much time enjoying the scenery and the jungle?

Overcast all day, the rain gods poked a little fun at us with 10 minutes of semi-serious rain as soon a we teed off before relenting and providing us with perfect overcast golfing conditions for the rest of the day.

Newcomers and Welcome Backs

Dave Tarcy10 Welcome Backs with most notable being former President of Quite a Lot of Things Dave Tarcy’s quick visit after 21 weeks away and of course Ivan Byriel who has been part of  the Tee Set furniture for some years but been missing since the Tee Set Championships; we trust that you will get more than the occasional weekend off from the jungle in future, Ivan!

Despite a 12:30 tee off, the bonus of a shotgun start from 8 holes meant that everyone was able to finish before dark though it was touch and go for some as the rounds were a little slow with the fastest being just under 5 hours.

Overcast all day, the rain gods poked a little fun at us with 10 minutes of semi-serious rain as soon as we had teed off – before relenting and providing us with perfect overcast golfing conditions for the rest of the day.

The Play

Skill prizes

Retuning former President Dave Tarcy made it a happy day by taking Low Net with a two under to take the Blue Ribbon Low Net while, on a course we guess he hadn’t seen before, Sombrero Sam still managed Low Gross with a nine over par 81 off the stick.

On a course possessed of some devilish greens, Nicky Moir’s 28 blows with the putter was the only round with under 30 to give hime\ Low Putts athough, sadly, Nicky was OB when it came to prize giving having promised to be back in Jakarta early to taste a new home grown recipe for Soto Ayam cooked up by a friend.

Newcomer Chris Chan made his mark with a 1st Sandy on the 4th, one of only two on the day. Might have been his new Tee Set attire that got him in the right mood for winning.

Ivan

Terrific to see Ivan Byriel back and taking the weekly prize he sees as his right, first Par for >= 30 Handicappers.

Booby Prizes

With the Ladies Tee on several holes at Sentul being more than 100 meters ahead of the blues, the Treasurer was confident of some significant additions to his coffers on the day and his optimism in this respect was not out of place as a handsome crop of 9 skirts was to prove him right. The Treasurer was seen to breath an audible sigh of relief on the very last tee box where he managed to just squeeze past the red tees for a gross zero skirts for the day.

Mike SThat rare bird, an Eagle, for Mike Spencer on his third hole as played in what was a remarkable day for this 15 week Welcome Back as he also managed an “unimprovement” on his back 9 of 21 and took Monster Putter with 43. Welcome back, Mike!

Fuller, player by player details here, while more action from the day can be found on the Tee Set’s photo website.

Footnote:

The 6 hardy golfers that took on Gunung Geulis the day before rate a mention for their dedication to fun. Best score was a 99 from Evaldo and the worst was an 108 from David Shenman but the scores were poor proxies for the day’s fun value. After waiting an hour for the Puncak road to open again at 7pm it was off to the Swiss Embassy Villa located at the very top of the Pass. Steaks, sausages, salads, fried rice etc etc all washed down with wine, beer and plenty of whisky. As a result there were a couple of us who nearly could not stand unassisted for Sunday’s tee off. Many thanks to Evaldo Roos for all his generosity in making the event a memorable blast.

Tee Set Matchplay Championship

Three results from Sentul Highland.

Tom Alcedo beat Santi Miller 5/4 – Tom played solidy with his 30 handicap to leave Santi up against it – her birdie on an early par 5 was answered by Tom with a par 5 to make it a push – leaving the lady wondering just what she had to do to win a hole!!

Craig Ewers beat Peter Reichlmeier 1 up – with reckless disregard for his future, Craig beat the President of Some Things by playing less awfully than the latter – in Peter’s own words.

Peter Bush beat Wina 1 up – but only after having been 5 (6?) up at one stage when Wina staged a hell of a comeback to leave the result on a knife edge. In golf it’s never over until it’s over. Just ask Adam Scott.

Next up

Last Sunday of the month of course, so it back to Senayan National, our luxurious new base in the heart of the city, for the March Monthly Medal. Usual 500,000 V Door voucher awaiting the highest Stableford points winner and the 500,000 Slaney’s Meats voucher for Low Net, while we have another regular 150,000 prize from Cecilia’s cafe for home made meat pies and freshly brewed coffee. All these, most of the regular prize categories, Long drive and Nearest to the Pin, mean there is plenty to go for at Senayan.

The Long Drive and Nearest to the pin Tee Set banners are now safely stored at Senayan so, if we remember to tell the course to put spotters on the appropriate holes, we have every hope of actually awarding these prizes this time.

First groups will be teeing off from 1 and 10 at 11:00 having paid their 500,000 roops for walking this distinctly flat course, to which you will have to add 250,000 per pax if you want to take a (shared) buggy.

A couple of reminders, firstly that there have been a number of occasions in the last year where golfers have lost valuables left in their locker at Senaya. You are strongly advised to make alternative arrangements for your family jewels if you choose to bring them along for some reason.

Secondly, we have a deal with Senayan for Tee Setters to get a discounted price of 40,000 net on cans of Bintang. Last time they were only available at this price from the vending point just outside the Pro shop. We are trying to resolve the issue but, to be safe, you might restrict your purchasing activity to just that location.

We have 56 places reserved for next week which should be enough but in the event of this not being the case then it will be first come first served, so you might consider signing up a little earlier than usual this week to make sure you get to join in what promises to be a great day.

See yah, Sunday! … Tee Set

Next up: Sentul Highlands, Sunday 23rd March

Sentul Highlands Golf ClubAs you may observe on the road signs leading to the club, Tee Set’s Gary Player designed venue on Sunday has had more name changes than Gary Glitter but now appears firmly settled on Sentul Highlands.

Sentul Highlands is pretty straight forward to get to using the Jagorawi Tol and taking the main Sentul City turn off before going straight on for a few clicks to a well sign posted destination. The club’s own map here.

A semi-mountain set up with delightful views, fast greens and good fairways (and several very challenging holes), the quality of the course has been somewhat variable over the years but around its best of late – and it will be interesting to see what has been achieved in the relatively recent upgrade to the clubhouse.

One thing one would not wish to have changed is the quality of the food available in the clubhouse which was top notch and one hopes still is. Beers are on the upside of pricing aspiration, a full esky is recommended for lovers of more than the odd one on the course.

Tee off is scheduled from 1 and 10 at 12:30, though we are advised that we might get away a little earlier so arrival no later than 11:30 please. Green Fees etc. including shared cart are at the “Club Privilege” rate of 735,000 roops, a not insignificant saving against the walk-on rate for a Sunday afternoon of 1,505,000 🙂

If you haven’t already, then get your name down here if you intend joining in the fun on what promises to be a very fine day.

Tee Set Midweek

For various most excellent reasons, Tee Set Midweek has fallen into a near somnambulent state with just one event at Senayan to its name this year. Something of a shame as a significant number of Tee Setters have declared an interest in mid-week when there are terrific bargains available around Jakarta’s many great courses for everyone including, not least, those over the age of 55!

Tee Setter Kiat is keen to get the thing on the road again and has agreed to put some effort into it so, if you are interested in playing midweek once a month or more, please drop Kiat an e-mail here.

Jagorawi, Sunday 16th March

Going to be a great day .... Jess and newcomer Aaron ..

Going to be a great day …. Jess and newcomer Aaron ..

The Day

A nice early start to Sunday morning golf was made even more pleasurable by a drive from Kemang to Jagorawi that took a total of just 20 minutes.

18  joined up to play on the day, with 8 joining Interleague for Tee Set and another ten playing regular Tee Set Sunday.

The Reigning President of Some Things started his day with a bang in making sure that George, Ian and Ric were all awake by backing his Kijang into a concrete wall while navigating a 3 point turn at the bottom of the Immediate Past President of Everything’s road. No golf clubs damaged, so no problem there then 🙂

After that exciting start, play commenced in very warm, extremely muggy weather and play was slow going. The course however was in great condition and there was even some run on the fairways, remember run on the fairways?  …. well it will be back full time soon. We hope.

Debbi

Debbie shows how versatile she can be …

The weather improved as the game wore on however and, happily, the speed of play increased in tandem. By the 15th hole cloud cover and the odd spit of rain was making for perfect golfing conditions.

In what is the only real meeting of Jakarta golf societies it was possible to see quite a number of regular Tee Setters wearing “foreign” uniforms and playing for other teams, however,  to even things up we had members of other teams join the regular Tee Set event, so great to have you with us again Brad and Debbie!

Just one newcomer on the day, Aaron Prato, so a big Tee Set welcome to him, come back often Aaron!

Most importantly, everyone greatly enjoyed their day amongst the general mayhem that is an Interleague Sunday.

The Play

Interleague

Simon Reynolds could also do with backing up into a concrete wall to get him going in the morning apparently, the alarm on his BB failed to fire resulting in a late showing and a missed opportunity to play in the Tee Set Interleague team.

Happily, past President and Tee Set Interleague stalwart Geoff Thwaites was on hand to come off the bench to take Simon’s spot!

Disappointingly, the Tee Set went down 4 and 6 to a Mad Dogs team who played to their potential with most shooting their handicap or better 😦

Sam Westen won an epic singles battle with Iris Rothenberg where, despite Sam shooting a round that included 7 birdies and 72 off the stick, it took a lengthy putt on the last hole to win the match.

George Bevege had a rare off-day and was well beaten by regular Tee setter Craig Binks (did anyone check his handicap!) in the other singles match 5 and 4. George last seen taking solace in Bir Bintang!

The pairing of Peter Reichlmeier and Mike Garwood had no answer to a very hot and in-form Oddvar and Arvid and went down 4 and 3

Mel Meeds and Geoff Thwaites came up against the Mad Dogs pocket rockets in Yati and Sue Jones and were no match for a couple of very in-form ladies, going down 2 and 1.

Chris Murchison and Nicky Moir saved some Tee set respectability by winning their match against Geoff Thomson and AN Other while further consolation was gained by Chris Murchison who took Nearest the Pin on that relatively short but always treacherous 11th hole over the water – 2 metres from the hole and sank the putt, well done, Chris!

Regular Tee Set

PrizesIn a refreshing reminder that Sunday golf is all about fun, Aaron shot 137 and just could not get the grin of his face, best fun you can have with your clothes on he told us … he will be back!!

The Interleaguers must have been very busy filling in their cards between holes as they joined in the regular Tee Set Sunday stuff too as well as their matchplay against Mad Dogs.

Sombrero Sam’s 72 off the stick was of course good enough to bring him back into the winners circle after an unprecedented week’s absence while an amazing 5 players shot a Low Net 70 including Sam who was however barred from sharing in that prize too.

In the absence of our new computer and the time saving bespoke Tee Set score cards, all the other prizes and booby prizes were left unawarded for once.

The usual detailed, player by player results, can be found here.

Matchplay

Just one result to report today, from Pangkalan Jati, where Graham McGeady held off a strong challenge from Cucu Chandra to move into Bracket Emas bracket with a 3 and 2 win.

Culture Corner

Tee Setters are known throughout the land to be people of culture and refinement and as such will be keen to learn that a quite fantastic Czech violinist, Pavel Sporcl, is coming to town and will be playing at the Gedung Kesenian on Wednesday 26th March at 8.pm. Find more details here.

Next up

Old Tee Set hands seem pretty convinced that Tee Set has played Sentul Highlands before, but are rather hazier on just when that might have been in our 30+ year history. The Immediate Past President of Everything relates that the course was in fact a regular Tee Set haunt before they got over-ambitious with the setting of their green fees a few (?) years ago.

No matter, we play the course next Sunday in, at the very least, the first time in a long time as the good news now is that Wina has been able to negotiate a rate which, while hardly bargain basement, puts it in our range at 735,000 roops all in – no walking option.

Less good is that the agreed start time will be a something less than optimal 12:30 – but with an indication that we may very well get away a little earlier. So plan to get their at 11:30 latest in order to enjoy their posh new clubhouse – and for us to get the flights organised.

Sign up to join in the fun on a great course on a ground breaking day for Tee Set. With Royale, Senayan, Rancamaya and Bogor Raya also on the 2014 schedule, can it be long before Pondok Indah et al succumb to the charms of our feisty little Schedule Meister?

See yah at Sentul! … Tee Set

Tee Set has the second event of Interleague 2014 on Sunday at Jagorawi, where we play Mad Dogs in a 3 doubles and 2 singles teams Matchplay format. Tee Set has a proud tradition in the competition and has played every year since its inception.

With the recent swelling of Tee Set ranks by so many new and some very handy players we have become far more competitive than in recent years. Jakarta Loose Impediments captain Brad Sincock got wind of this and was seen mingling with the Tee Set group with apparent intent at one of our recent Sunday outings.

Accusations of poaching were met with mild denial but that was the last time we saw Brad! Guilty as charged? Nevertheless if you went through each team in Interleague you would find a significant majority are either current or former Tee Setters.

Leading the fight against Mad Dogs this Sunday will be Sam (Sombrero) Westen, George (Pulpy) Bevege, Chris Murchison and Mel Meeds all former low gross winners together with a Nicky Moir also hitting some form in taking low nett last Sunday at Rancamaya. Captain Peter Reichlmeier will be on hand to choose the pairings that are most likely to bring the Dogs to their knees.

For those not in the match play team, there is the usual stroke play event starting immediately after the Interleague shot gun start at 09:30.

Green Fees etc including shared cart are 955,000 and in addition there is a Rp50,000 fee to be paid to the immediate past President of Everything that goes towards the Interleague end of season b-b-q, an event well entrenched on the Tee Set calendar and not to be missed.

Hope to see ya Sunday. Come early for a spot of breakfast and a freshly brewed coffee. If you haven’t done so already then please register here if you intend playing Jagorawi in whatever capacity on Sunday.

Rancamaya, Sunday 9th March

After a long time trying, George finally breaks his Low Gross duck!!

After a long time trying, George finally breaks his Low Gross duck with a fine 79 off the stick!!

The Day

JuergenFirst up are big thanks to Juergen Degert for once again not only getting us access on favourable terms to Tee Set’s favourite course but also securing cans of beer at an equally favourable 40,000 roops. We were happy that though Juergen was unable to join us for play, he was able to join in some vigorous apres golf!

Another big turnout at Rancamaya with 45 Tee Setters joining in the fun on the peerless Rancamaya course in fine condition despite months of rain, though the greens were slower than usual.

Numbers needing transport from Kemang were so large that the specially hired Tee Set Charabanc was inadequate to carry them all and we had to take up Thurmond Borden’s kind offer to carry the overload in his own bus. Well done and many thanks to Thurmond!

Newcomers and Welcome BackThree Newcomers this week in Joseph d’Cruz, Scott Huffman and Samret Raungrit, a warm Tee Set welcome to them all.

10 Welcome Backs in all with the longest absence being that of Aljosja van Dorssen at 19 weeks followed by Ed Tarog who hadn’t been seen since the Tee Set Championship and Ziad Khalaf for whom this was probably a Tee Set swan song before he leaves for a particularly nasty place elsewhere.

The starter putting a number of Korean flights between our flights was a red rag to the bull and he was to take a real ear full from Juergen who forbade our making the usual contribution to the Starter’s Benevolent Fund.

There was a bit of traffic on the way back due to an accident and the usual Sunday return to Jakarta ASAP madness which wasn’t even noticed by the bus passengers. Some Aussie bashing was well handled by outnumbered Aussie pair Graham Barbour and John Berry to the point that by the end of the trip the karaoke crooning was in full swing from all nationalities and the beer esky empty apart from one pulpy orange bought specially for George “Pulpy” Bevege who we understand loves the stuff. All that was missing to make the bus trip complete was some of John Suermondt’s tales of his past love life and brushes with the medical profession.

To the added chagrin of a winless Sam, Evaldo gets best dressed award this week. Obviously receiving his wardrobe advice on how to be cool from his daughter, Noemi, who was yet again to fail to get out of bed in time for Tee Set this morning.

The PlayPrizes

Nicky gets the bawbees.

Nicky gets the bawbees.

Top billing to Nicky Moir for his Low Net of 68 and his first ever major prize while George Bevege shot a fine Low Gross of 79 to finally lose his perennial bridesmaid label in that category. With George rewarded elsewhere, Newcomer Scott Huffman took Low Putts to get his money back and is clearly providing some further competition for Sam in the Caddy Magnet stakes.

All of this meant that Sam Westen failed to recoup his Tee Set fee for the first time in longer than we can remember. We don’t expect this to recur for a while.

Some extraordinary competition this week for 1st Birdie with 14 birdies by 14 different players in total on the day, including one on every one of the first 5 holes, however Graham Barber’s on the 1st took the prize while Oddvar and Mark Johnson shared 1st Sandy on the 5th.

Aljosja vanDorssen took time to get used to his new Tee Set shirt but improved by 9 strokes on the back nine when he discovered how to break it in – by dribbling some beer down the front if it.  This improvement presented the Immediate Past President of Everything with an amusing pronunciation challenge which with the help of another (sort of) Dutchman, John Suermondt; he was by common consent reckoned to have made a decent fist of it.

Christian Molau had an up and down round when in his first 9 he shot well under his handicap with the help of 1st Par for a player with handicap over 30 on the very 1st hole,  a birdie on his third and a Sandy Par on his sixth. On his back 9 and with a deterioration of 12 shots he would surely have won “Most Unimproved” should there have been such a thing.

Booby prizesJess Kindler had a bad day at the office for as well as losing his Matchplay, he also took Monster Putter and Most Strokes on a hole. No worries Jess, there will be better days again!

Money business for Jess

Special mention this week for Mel Meeds who, on the 4th, put his drive well right when his ball hit a tree, bounced back onto the cart path and continued bouncing back for a total of more than 50 meters, finally landing 1 metre from where it started and behind the blue marker. With refreshing disregard for human sensibilities this led to a total collapse into fits of laughter by all present, even Mel – though better than OB we guess.

Mel chose to leave early to avoid the shame of wearing a skirt traffic.

Fuller player by player results here and more photos of the day on our photo website.

2014 Tee Set Matchplay

Another two matches played at Rancamaya today:

David Shenman beat Alistair Livingstone 4 and 3
