Fairway to heaven??

We mentioned in the last post that Rancamaya was “a course perhaps more loved than any other on our itinerary”.

Perhaps the “perhaps” was a piece of English understatement as you will see from this list of the 15 highest attended events (excluding the Tee Set Championships and 30th Anniversary) since January 2012, which is probably the same as all time. Top 15

As you see, Rancamaya features in 3 of the top 4 places and five times in total on that list; the only reason it doesn’t appear more often being that we have only played there five times since detailed records began on 1-1-2012.

As we also mentioned Tee Set have been given 12 flights or 48 pax for Sunday and, while we find it difficult to imagine that they will actually turn any Tee Setters away, they are rather strict on our having to provide them with a timely list of players by Friday. So, if you haven’t already, please get your name down as soon as possible.

Green Fees are marginally up to 580,00 roops this year but are clearly one of the finest bargains available in Jakarta – and beers are on “special offer” at just 40,00!!

A higher than usual number of players are looking for transport to the course and we might once again run the Tee Set charabanc from Hero in Kemang, so let Ric Wymer know if this would suit you. Please let Ric know also if you have any spare seats going in your car so that a final decision can be made on Friday. Those who have taken the charabanc before speak highly of its sociability, not least because Tee Set usually throws in some liquid refreshment for the journey home.

While on the subject of superlatives, we have received notice of the 2014 Society of Petroleum Engineers event being held at Jagorawi Friday April 25th. SPE members get first dibs at registration before it is thrown open to non-members starting next Monday, March 10th.

The SPE really is Jakarta’s premier expat golf event (apart from the Tee Set Championship of course) and, going on previous experience, the event will probably have filled up by next Tuesday so,  if you want to play then have a look at their rather charming flyer and get your name down tout de suite. And remember, the money they make goes to the excellent if rather forlorn cause of educating Rock Doctors.

Palm Hill, Sunday 2nd March

The Day

A beautiful hot and sunny day stolen from the dry season was the reward for the 32 Tee Setters who made it to a Palm Hill course in pretty good condition all things considered, though the greens were not at their best after recent weather and a hard weekend of play. Just to prove the point, the heavens opened not long after play had finished to provide some post prize giving fireworks.

Just one Newcomer to record, visitor Dave Pegler, though the return of Joe Rizzoli was nearly in that category so long is it since he played Tee Set. 13 Welcome Backs in total with perhaps the other notables being a Matt Fairey and Nuri Puzey last seen at the Tee Set Championship back in November – and a James Ross absent for 8 weeks nursing his poorly body parts. A warm Welcome and Welcome Back as appropriate to all.

An outstanding performance from this week’s  Late Team who finally left the clubhouse rather the worse for wear, and having solved world hunger, a little after 9pm. Special mention for meritorious conduct from George Beverage who managed to run up a new record restaurant and bar bill of nearly a million roops to the appreciation of an astonished Palm Hill staff.

In something of a mysterious development, George’s bill included a “pulpy orange”, hard to believe it was George’s but he paid for it anyway. Ian Barr managed to come to the course without his wallet, so that may not be unrelated to the size of George’s bill – and perhaps even the pulpy orange.

If you saw our secretary Brenda with a wider smile than usual today then that is probably due to the old Tee Set IBM laptop finally being sent into long overdue retirement together with its dicky BIOS – and replaced by something modern and one third of the weight 🙂

Very positive reception to the Immediate Past President of Everything making handicaps available online, Tee Set may be a “mature” group but we seem pretty receptive to the wonders of the new online world. Expect further developments there.

Finally, congratulations once again to Wina for arriving just as the first group was teeing off, thereby ensuring that she and her group were last off again. Another long established Tee Set tradition.

Happiness came  to Leona Jelinkova in the shape of her first ever Low Net win with a 68.

You can expect some close attention to that 35 Handicap from the Committee, Leona!

Sam Westen played his worst round of the year to come in with 83 off the stick but that was still good enough to see off our perennial bridesmaid at Low Gross, George “Pulpy” Bevege.

A relatively high 29 putts was good enough to win Low Putts for Ken Runyon while, clearly enjoying the company of the ladies, Simon Reynolds once again birdied his first hole to take 1st Birdie with little ado.

Amongst the minor prizes, Jorge Gonzalez took 1st Sandy with Sam barred from winning more than 1 prize while James Ross celebrated his return to Tee Set action with a Most Improved of 7 strokes.

Booby Prizes

A relatively low haul of 7 skirts at what has historically been a very nice earner for the treasurer – but some significant names did join the weekly cross-dressers as it is not often we relieve Geoff Thwaites of his 50,000 or indeed the Immediate Past President of Everything (and current treasurer).

Despite prize giving within minutes of the last group getting in, attendance was only a little over 50% with many players anxious to get into the mess at the entry to the Jalan Tol as soon as possible. The Treasurer wishes to thank all those who consequently contributed their prizes for the common good.

2014 Tee Set Matchplay

Ten Tee Setters took the very first opportunity to get their first round matches played at Palm Hill yesterday with the following all rather clear-cut results:

Chris Murchison beat Ric Wymer 4 and 3

Jan Janda beat Paul Evison 3 and 2

Mustafa Baabad beat John Suermondt 4 and 3

Chris Smith beat Matt Fairey 4 and 3

George Bevege beat Ian Barr 4 and 3

No heroics on the 18th or the putting green this time so congratulations to the winners, you go into Bracket Emas while the losers go into Bracket Kuningan, the Bracket which almost invariably produces the eventual winner – so shed no tears.

Next up

A course perhaps more loved than any other on our itinerary next week as we brave the Jagorawi Tol all the way to Ciawi and beyond to reach the Rancamaya Golf and Country Club. Actually it is the couple of kilometres “beyond” that normally provides the greatest challenge and, with the recent rains having had their usual effect on road conditions, we can expect more of the same this time.

As regular Tee Setters know so well, what awaits after that challenge makes it all tremendously worthwhile with a stunning course ever in top class condition and all for a great value 580,00 roops including shared buggy – and as well as that fine rate, long time Tee Set member Juergen Degert has also managed to secure us a preferential beer rate of 40,000 for the day!

Tee off at 11:30 from at least two tees but with numbers allegedly limited to just 48 players, you might be well advised to get your registration in early this week.

The present President of some things was seen reconnoitring golf courses for us in Bali today but will be back in time to knock us into shape at Rancamaya

Yep, we are back to that very attractive course out on the Jagorawi Tol, Palm Hill, a course whose attractions include being real easy to find – just come off the Tol at the Sirkuit Sentul exit and then go straight on through the Sirkuit Sentul security post. They may stop you at the security post so just shout “Golf!” if they do,  and they will let you through when you will find the course about a kilometre or so further on.

Green fees including compulsory cart are a reasonable 608,000 and we have an 11:30 tee off from 1 and 10. Register here for the round as usual.

2014 Tee Set Matchplay

Registration is now closed and the draw was completed at Senayan last week and details of the competition, including contact details for all 44 participants, have now been distributed appropriately by organiser Fernando ” El Guapo” Gaggino.

Most have already coughed up their 100,000 registration, however if you haven’t then please sort out with Brenda next time you play. PLEASE also report results to Brenda if you play your match on a Sunday at Tee Set – or direct to El Guapo otherwise.

Handicaps

Tee Set purchased a Handicap System around 1997 and a faithful servant it has proven since, despite being quite unaware of years post 1999. The latest generation of the same software provides a number of advantages, not the least of which is making data available online via the Internet and your committee recently decided to go ahead and plunge into the 21st Century and invest some of your money in the update.

The more observant may have noticed an extra option on the menu above for “Handicaps”. The option takes you to Tee Set’s new handicap system online where you will be able to see your own, and everyone else’s current handicap online. After being  taken to the NSI eHandicap site, just enter “Teeset” as the Club ID and use “Wymer” as the password. You should then select “Course Handicap Member List”, the course you want to see handicaps for and then hit the “Generate Report” button when …….. BINGO!

Later, after more hard work from the immediate past President of Everything, you will be given a personal account on the system and will be able to see your own data in detail including just how your handicap has been calculated, though we don’t imagine this will stop those regular complaints along the lines of “I have never shot better than 90, why is my bloody handicap 17?”

Monthly Medal, Senayan, Sunday 23rd February

The Day

The rain came down in biblical proportions on Saturday which no doubt threw doubt into some players minds as to whether it was worth showing up for the Senayan outing. We probably had a half dozen drop out because they couldn’t find boat transport but, despite all the obstacles, we still managed to get 57 to the hit off, the second highest of all time outside special events. Brenda coped admirably, so well done her!

The Senayan club house was a hive of activity with firstly the promotional launching of yet another new Japanese car series with all the fanfare and long legged models that come with that – and Sahid Sahirman Hospital group doing free medical checks for Tee Set. Luckily all 57 players passed their medicals and were declared fit to stand on the first tee box without assistance.

This event was of course the inaugural Senayan Monthly Medal and although there are a few bugs to iron out with getting all the groups away in a timely fashion, on the whole it was a great day’s golf in outstanding weather.

The course has a lot to offer with a reasonable green fees, though those requiring a cart to carry their beer esskies and ghetto blasters around the course get gouged with 250,000 roops per player for the privilege and, while we had Nearie and Long Drive banners out, that was as far as it went 😦

The current President of some things is working through his connections to get all these minor hiccups sorted out before our next Monthly Medal.

Huge number of Newcomers and an even longer list of Welcome Backs including Dave Allan who had not darkened Tee Set’s door since April 2012! Welcome and Welcome Back to all!!

Nicky Moir carried an umbrella all day to hide eyes which resembled pee holes in snow. The story goes that he found himself marooned in the Cazbar due to the rains and was forced “against his will” to consume a full bottle of vodka. The rest is folklore.

Next Up: Senayan International, Sunday 23rd February

SenayanYep, it’s the one we have all been waiting for, Tee Set’s first Monthly Medal at our superb new home in the city, Senayan International.

We will start at 11:00 from two tee boxes as Tee Setters go in hunt of the V Door Monthly Stableford Medal and the Slaney’s Butchery Low Net Award – with each prize worth 500,000 roops – or exactly enough to cover the very attractive green fees etc if you are walking.

Cart fees are a rather less attractive 250,000 per pax where shared, however, carts are something less than a must for most on a course which varies from the flat only where the services of a bulldozer have previously been engaged.

As ever on Medal Sunday, there are additional prizes for Long Drive and Nearest to the Pin so long as your hard working, if occasionally forgetful, committee manages to remember to bring the banners.

Just days to go to the draw for the 2014 Matchplay and, with 36 Tee Setters already signed up, we have a few spaces still available for latecomers. The draw for the first round will take place just before the prize awards on Sunday so make sure that you are there to ensure all is above board 🙂

Interleague 2 man-scramble, Jagorawi Sunday 16th February

Interleague 2 man scramble with a 9.30 am shot gun start is an absolute luxury and was once again to prove very popular and enjoyable. Tom Grace, clearly an early bird, confirmed he would play more often if Tee Set had such an early tee time every week. We suspect that not all would agree.

In the 2-man Scramble format you are a bit more in the game than with a 4 man team but still have a mate to back you up in the event of an ill-advised swipe into the Jagorawi jungle!

The format is far from a pushover although 17 out of the 32 groups managed to break into the net 60’s with the staggered handicapping proved to be a fairer system then the typical 20% of total handicap although it did challenge the team captains’ mathematical prowess.

The course was in great condition considering the recent rains though the greens were a little slower than usual but generally true.

Tee Set was well represented on the podium with Tom Grace nearest to the pin winner at 2.4 metres but confessed he missed the birdie putt, while the team of Mel Meeds and Peter Reichlmeier won lowest net on the back of some great par saving puts and 2 chip ins while Joseph Peries and Mamovu Fukuzada from Tin Cups didn’t need a handicap, shooting 65 off the stick to win low gross.

The committee broke from its traditional prize structure and instead awarded each winner a bottle of Australia’s finest red. In true Interleague fashion a large percentage of participants stayed around for a few cold ones and the post match post-mortem – although the Sentul Swinger’s team was nowhere to be seen. Chris Murchison took the money once again from his good mate George Bevege in a weekly battle that is gaining some notoriety in Tee Set. Also under active discussion was whether Simon R had broken the Sergio Garcia record for the number of grip and re-grips during ball address. George apparently won money on this outcome and was heard to quote, “you can finish a cigarette during Simon’s set-up routine, mate.”

The Interleague season starts proper with the first round of match play competition on March 16th. Tee Set enjoys an ever increasing number of new players to choose from and will no doubt trouble the traditional front runners of the Sandbaggers, Cloggies and Tin Cups who finished ahead of Tee Set in 2013.

The immediate past president of everything is now on the Interleague committee and was very prominent in carrying out organisational duties before and after the game – not least due to the rest of the committee being nowhere to be seen! Many thanks to him.

2014 Tee Set Matchplay Championship

Though we have 40 Tee Setters already registered for the 2014 Championship we still have room for more, however, with the draw for the first round on Sunday before prize giving at Senayan, time is running out – so let us know if are joining the fun here. Mustafa Baabad is so keen to get going that he has now signed up three times, way to go Mustafa!

2 manWell, you can’t complain about lack of variety at Tee Set for, as well as 20+ different courses a year, the Matchplay Championship, the Tee Set Championship and the Interleague, we now offer you the chance to join in that rare bird, a two-man Texas Scramble.

If you have not already bagged a playing partner, unlike George Bevage who nabbed Sam Westen 2 seconds after hearing about the event format, then leave that to us and just register your intent to join in the fun here. If you have already agreed with someone else about forming a 2 man team then let us know in the comment box.

Handicaps are always a lively discussion point at Texas Scrambles though, with big events invariably being won with net scores in the 50s, it seems that the discounting applied is too generous by and large. Sunday’s schema is noticeably less generous, and as follows:

  0-7 player                 15%

        8-14                          20%

        15-25                        25%

        26-28                        30%

Then add the two handicaps together

         Example     Player “A” handicap 7 and Player “B” handicap 16

                            Player “A” is 7*15% = 1.05

                            Player “B” is 16*25%= 4.00

                            Team combined handicap is 5.05

A shotgun start at 9:30 with green fees etc including compulsory shared cart of  950,000 roops  which together with an an Interleague charge of 50,000 to be collected by Ric, brings it to a nice round million; there will be NO Tee Set charge for this event.

Matoa, Sunday 9th February

The Day

The return to Matoa was all quite painless with traffic good both there and back.

No doubt due to the torrential over night and early morning rain, the course was pretty quiet, as evidenced by a near empty car park and a nice even 28 Tee Setters showed up to play with n0-shows nicely balanced out by walk-ons, though no carts, due to the overnight rain, meant some unplanned exercise for a few.

The starter did us proud with all 7 flights away by 11am, something which took a few by surprise, having to change their coffee orders to “to go”

Those who were expecting a cold wet day and stayed away got it wrong. Although the course was a little wet and mushy in places the days was ideal golfing weather, with sun and wind burn rather than wet clubs the outcome. Also great drinking weather for a certain group that went a Bintang a hole for 18 holes and were still quenching well after the round had finished.

Ricky Cunningham RIP

Ricky CunninghamVery sad to report that part time Tee Set golfer – and full time great guy, Ricky Cunningham – passed away on the afternoon of Wednesday 5th February in Kemang.

Long time Jakarta resident Ricky was very well known to, and close friends with, many of the regulars here at Tee Set.

Ricky was the main driving force behind successful local business “Tucker Box – Aussie Craw”, established in 2011 using breeding stock from Australia and – since 2012 Ricky has supported the Tee Set Championship with sponsorship and, even more importantly, a steady supply of fresh Aussie yabbies.

Ricky epitomised the Aussie “battler” and has been taken from the world before his time – and just when the fruits of his labours were coming through so strongly.

Condolences from all at Tee Set to Ricky’s family and all those close to him.

RIP Ricky. You will be sorely missed, mate.

Next up: Matoa, Sunday 9th February

Welcome to MatoaThe good news, as reported by the immediate past President of Everything in our last post, is that Matoa (Where Heaven Found in Golf) is back in somewhat better shape after a miserable 2013 – while the bad news, maybe, is that the Starter has already advised that carts may not be allowed on the course on Sunday.

Bit of a pain, if rather understandable in the current circumstances. A final decision will be made on Friday allegedly; anyway, we will keep everyone who has registered for the round in the picture as it becomes clearer to us.

Whatever the outcome, Matoa is in fact an eminently walkable course and we have an 11:00 tee time and, as ever, every prospect of getting away earlier. Those who like that little extra time in bed on a Sunday morning are on warning that they may end up in an otherwise all-Korean group like Mo Maharam last week. Not that there is anything wrong with that of course, you do get as much extra time as you want to line up your putts.

Green fees although increased over last year, still represent fair value at 540,000 roops walking or 690,000 with a shared cart if available – and the beer prices are also attractive, at least when compared to last week’s venue.

Finally, a reminder that registrations for the 2014 Tee Set Match Play close soon so, once again, if you haven’t already done so then sign up here; time is running out as the draw will take place on Sunday 23rd February after the Senayan Monthly Medal. Just remember that, with new broom Fernando “El Guapo” Gaggino cracking the whip this year, matches are expected to be concluded on schedule – or else!
