Padang Golf Modern, Sunday 5th January

The scene at Hole #10 after finishing the first 9, perhaps the abiding impression of the day?

The scene at Hole #10 after finishing the first 9, perhaps the abiding impression of the day?

40 Tee Setters made the trip out to West Jakarta and the lovely Padang Golf Modern (PGM) when, in another win for Teeset’s Pawang Hujan, we had yet another mid-rainy season afternoon of umbrella free golf.

At 10 o’clock there were already 11 players waiting with their 100,000 Roops in hand – and this a full hour and half before the scheduled tee time, and by 11 o’clock we had the full complement ready to go with only the exception of a Wina (who else!!) still on the road.

Among the 40 were a couple of Tee Setters who had arrived in the morning on the red eyes from Bangkok and Manila, Evaldo Roos and Sam Westen respectively. Great stuff guys.

A couple of Newcomers in the shape of Aussie Craig Goldthorpe and Jim Walker from Canada. A warm Tee Set welcome to them both.

7-Debbie MinicolaSome big Welcome Backs with the biggest certainly being Debbie Minicola who hadn’t darkened Tee Set’s door since June last year; we hope it won’t be another 29 weeks before we see you again, Debbie!

A high of 8 players joined the first round of 2014 after not having played since the 2013 Championship with, among their considerable number, being 2011 Tee Set Champion, Mustafa Baadaad, though his prolonged absence did not appear to have diminished his wily course sense according to those who played with him.

The PGM Starter did a great job in getting us off 2 tee boxes 20 minutes earlier than scheduled and we were to complete the front 9 in a near record time of 1 hr 45 mins. Shame about the 45 to 60 minute wait between holes 9 and 10 and 18 and 1, as 4 or so groups were inserted into the field at both holes.

Why does this happen, there are only so many people you can fit on a golf course at any one time! And if they had a system, we could at least have taken a break for lunch or something as is done in more organised venues in other countries on those super busy weekend days.

Really rather disappointing, even after the Starters kind provision of several pitchers of beer for the boyz as compensation, as the course was in great shape, the staff in the club house keen and friendly, the food was just fine with the exception of Geoff Thwaites fish apparently – and the beer satisfyingly cold.

Maybe we are looking for perfection in the wrong place and should be happy (or a little happier) with what we get. Any views? That of the Immediate Past PoE was that despite the crowd, the round was still completed in less time than it takes to bowl out a full lineup of English batsmen. Your Pommy scribe has no comment.

The Play

PrizesSam Westen continues to make a mockery of the theory that low handicappers cannot win lowest net; his 70 off the stick from a 3 handicap was good enough to take Low Gross and Low Net if we had let him, however, Tee Set Rules (yes, honestly, we have a few though invariably yet to to be found in written form) state you can only win one prize, so Sam was awarded only the former prize, though in an exception that merely serves to prove that rule, Sam was in fact also rewarded for that rarely seen bird, First Eagle, on hole 5.

KoenWith Sam out of the running, Craig Ewers took the money for Low Net with a commendable 68 while the immediate Past President of Everything pocketed the 100,000 roops for Low Putts of just 26.

PGM’s generally small elevated greens makes them tough to hold and short chips and a one putt became the order of the day and this was certainly to the liking of Mo Maharam who came in with just 25 putts, though his buggering off early meant the low putts award went to the next in line, the past President of Everything who, with 26 putts, was declared winner.

ChristianKeith Miller immediately lodged a protest as he had also taken the same number of blows with the blade in his net 70 – but had rank pulled on him, a matter which will shortly be the subject of a law suit. Seems a little over the top over 8 bucks but “money is money” opined Keith in a prolonged post round session that saw some not leaving the sociable PGM clubhouse until nearly 7pm.

Anlo du Pisani startled his playing partners with an immediate birdie on his very first hole though reality was to settle in a little after that start.

Well done  to Christian Molau who took his first ever prize, that for 1st Par for >= 30 Handicapper, better than a skirt, Christian!

OnJust one skirt on the day, that of long playing member, Koen Verhayen, who told us that he was fooled by water that he “didn’t know was there”. Mmmm.

Special mention to On Shenman who successfully made it through her second game of golf with Tee Set. Keep it up On, don’t let the odd fine worry you, happens to the best of us 🙂

Fuller, player by player results. Some more photos of the day.

Next Up

Our new Schedule Meister, Wina Nugraha, is doing great work on putting an exciting schedule together for us and we will be able to reveal this, and our new home for the Monthly Medal, in the near future. In the interim however we are pleased to advise that next week’s Tee Set will be at the re-modelled and top class Senayan GC in the heart of the city and possessed of some of the finest  turf and greens in Jakarta and its surrounding areas -and certainly the most luxurious and superbly equipped clubhouse.

Tee off will be from 1 and 10 at 11am prompt, with green fees etc of 700,000 roops walking an eminently walkable course while a cart runs to a sensational 600,000 – you may care to share it with a friend to halve the cost. We suspect most Tee Setters will walk on principle.

Unfortunately, we have now been advised that we can have only 32 slots on the day at Senayan. We could have spit the dummy and moved elsewhere, however, the opportunity to play this course as Tee  Set for the first time proved too much even for our truculent nateure – and your committee decided to live with the limit.

So, it is especially important to register early this week if you want to be sure of a place at Senayan as numbers are limited to that 32 – and will be strictly allocated on a “first come, first served basis”. We will close registration as soon as we get 36 Tee Setters, with 33-36 going on the waitimg list. We will advise the lucky Tee Setters as soon as they are all known.

It hardly goes without saying that it is essential that if you get a place for Senayan that you tell us if you subsequently find that you cannot play, this in order that we can bring in the wait listed of course.

See yah Sunday!! …. Tee Set

Next up: Padang Golf Modern, 5th January 2014

PDGJakarta’s Western flatlands, far away from the rain prone Bogor area, are the destination for Tee Set’s first round of 2014 – at the high class Padang Golf Modern course.

You may find it useful to check out Modern’s location etc as while it is easy to get close to, things then get just a little more involved. If you are in the centre of the city the Merak Tol is the way to go while, for Southerners, hanging a right at the end of the Serpong Tol is your route of choice.

Green fees etc, including the usual compulsory cart, are the same as this year’s 650,000 roops, a friendly price for a class course for an 11:30 tee off – if you haven’t already then please get yourself registered here if you intend playing.

In an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to distract attention away from a New Year “head” your webmaster ran a few queries of possible interest against the Tee Set database in respect of 2013. First up is proof positive that we are not in fact surrounded by Aussies; maybe they just make more noise than the rest of us and it just seems that way at times? 🙂

BY COUNTRY

Can anyone remember the South Korean????

Of those one thousand nine hundred and thirty three rounds played, we have to take off all the ones which didn’t have full stats recorded eg the Interleague rounds and cards not handed in etc which leaves us the following stats:

STROKES

So, there you go, the number you always wanted, you have a 12% chance of getting a skirt on any given round. On average of course.

Some other stuff.

Matoa Monthly Medal, 29th December 2013

HP taking over

Smart phones even taking over Tee Set now 😦

With the mountains of Bogor visible in the distance on a clear day anyway, a late December appointment at Matoa carries a significant rain-risk, however, the Tee Set’s legendary luck held once again and we were to have a blissfully cool, overcast and rain free day for very possibly the last ever Monthly Medal at Matoa. Given the high number of Tee Setters “out of town” for the holidays, a very reasonable 21 hopefuls showed up for the last round of the year – and a much better than usual chance  at taking the Medal itself.

Early arrivers reported that the traffic to the course from the city was fine while the many latecomers reported that it was appalling. There may very well be a moral in that somewhere .

Sad to report that the course condition is in what appears to be terminal decline with large tracts of the fairways covered in grass free patches. The signs saying “Herbisida” are themselves also showing significant signs of age, having been there since at least August – and appear to be no more than an excuse for the conditions. The greens were rather better and certainly no worse than one would expect towards the end of a weekend of heavy use. The condition of the fairways and the statement above that this is possibly the last ever Monthly Medal at Matoa are not unconnected. Watch this space.

Two Newcomers to the party, Richard Pitt who has been here in Indonesia for donkeys years but has only now discovered us, and On Shenman who is not unknown to us as she has been accompanying husband David for several months but only as far as the clubhouse previously! A warm Tee Set welcome to them both.

Next up: Monthly Medal at Matoa

xmas golfWe trust that you had a great Xmas Day with family and friends, got that set of clubs you were hoping for from Santa – and are ready to return to the fray!

With the Tee Set Championship conflicting in November, it is a couple of months since the Tee Set Monthly Medal was held so it is good to be back in business at Matoa on Sunday.

Also returning, as Monthly Medal sponsor, is Slaney’s Butchery after something of an interregnum, which means that the winner will once again get a 500,000 rupiah voucher to spend on whatever they want at Slaneys. The aroma smoked leg of lamb looks like it would be a splendid addition to your New Year’s eve spread but your choice, we will eat anything you put in front of us!!

Tee Time will be 11:30 and will be from at least two tees. If you haven’t done so already then let us know of your intention to play here.

See yah Sunday! …. Tee Set

Riverside, 22nd December

Christmas Tee SetThe Play

Heavy overnight rain slackened off some in the morning but the odds against play looked reasonably long as some decided not to travel, with just 25 optimists turning up at the clubhouse with the intent of taking on the mighty Riverside.

With a fairway or two still flooded and water everywhere, the starter was eventually let us go around 30 minutes late and in a light drizzle, while one group sensibly decided it wasn’t worth the candle and retired from the scene

The lunacy of the remaining 21 players was to be rewarded, however, as with a relatively quick round of a little more than 4 hours, and the rain remaining at no more than a drizzle with occasional rain-free patches, the course recovered to play amazingly well, not least the greens which were impeccable.

Tee Set’s new clubhouse?

All who survived the day were to agree that their patience and endurance had been well rewarded – and their rain jackets well exercised, on what was a very fine course – and blessed with really very good caddies.

There is a strong possibility that we will shortly agree with Riverside club management to move our Monthly Medal to the Riverside course for 2014 – and at a really rather attractive rate for what is a top class venue – watch this space.

Just one Newcomer made it to the 1st tee box, Gultom Pungkas, so a warm Tee Set welcome to him in his baptism by rain. Welcome Backs were far more numerous at eleven and therefore too numerous to list but included Rod Ritson and Mark Johnson after 28 and 20 weeks away respectively, Robert Bellavance and Barry Poulter after 16 weeks apiece and a Mike Garwood returning for Xmas after 10 weeks of “looking after” his woolly friends in New Zealand.

Confusion as  always with the bills at Riverside’s pleasant restaurant though happily, and in stark contrast to last time we were there, just one unpaid bill at the end of the evening, a really modest one for a beer and a coffee in the name of “Mr Ray Ham” – anyone owning up to it should refund the President of Some Things.

The Play

PrizesThe highlight of the day for some was the sight of Barry Poulter’s ball going just short of the green on a par 3 and being stalked and carried off by a largish dog when, such was the mirth of Barry’s playing companions, that play was unable to continue for several minutes. No photo unfortunately.

Low Net Shared by Sofree Abdul and Peter Reichlmeier, though Sofree was OB and Peter had already shared  Low Putts, so no prize award!

Turning to the “real” prizes, with Sam Westen having a rare “bit of an off day”. Low Gross was up for grabs and Mark Blake’s 79 from the blues at Riverside was good golf by anyone’s standard and a deserved winner.

25 putts (the green were is great shape despite  the rain) will get you Low Putts most Sundays, and this week saw two Tee Setters on that number, a George Bevege who is becoming a regular fixture on the winners podium – and Peter Reichlmeier.

Finally, another rich, 7 skirt haul, to put a smile on the absent Treasurer’s face. Only 5 pictured but we collected all!!

Xmas Skirts
Fuller, player by results can be found here and more photos here.

Next Up

In the middle of the holiday season, we are not expecting a huge turnout next Sunday, however, as we have already bought the December Monthly Medal the show goes on, and someone from the diminished field will surely grab the chance of their 15 minutes worth of fame at Matoa – when half a mill of Slaney’s meat will also be back on the menu as a prize for the winner!

Let us know if you are playing by registering in the usual place.

Merry Xmas to all – and see yah at Matoa ….. Tee Set

Next up: Riverside

RiversideThe last time Tee Set played Riverside was back in October 2012 when 30 brave souls were to take on what is, by common consent, one of Jakarta’s very finest courses, and indeed the #1 in the view of some.

The intervening inactivity is certainly not the result of any lack of enthusiasm for the course or indeed its top class clubhouse and facilities but, rather, due to the club deciding to put their fees out of the range of what we consider Tee Setters are on the whole, happy to pay, especially given the many good alternatives available.

Christmas always sees demand for play on every course dwindling, however, and newly appointed Tee Set Schedule Manager, Wina, has been able to secure an excellent rate of 795,000 for this Sunday, including shared cart, a rate that will come down to 745,000 if we are a minimum, coincidentally, of 30 players.

Riverside has a reputation of being a tough old course but Tee Setters laugh in the face of adversity and, last time out, Craig Selbie “tamed” it with a Low Gross of 81 followed by a whole bunch on 84; 5 players actually shot under their handicap while “only” 5 of us picked up a skirt!

On the other hand, John Suermondt will  be happy to be back in Aussie for the Christmas period as he shot a highest of the day last time out at Riverside, coming in with a 59-57-116. Asked  to explain this enormous score, John shrugged and replied “I was putting very well, particularly on the back nine”. Happy Xmas, John!

christmas touchRegistrations are already a healthy 15, so get your name down now for what will be an interesting and challenging day of golf, and with a bit of fun afterwards as we celebrate Christmas just a little early.

As mentioned above, the club has excellent facilities which include a swimming pool, so you might think about bringing along the wife and kids – someone else’s if you don’t have any of your own.

We understand that Father Christmas hats are de riguer but, thankfully, Christmas Carols are off the menu.

See yah Sunday! …. Tee Set

PS The Indonesia Golf magazine has published a comprehensive report on the 2013 Matchplay Championship which you will find on page 13 of the magazine – particularly useful for those many whose memories of the day are less than crystal clear.

PPS Your committee is planning a Tee Set Weekend Mountain Retreat at the Lido Lakes resort sometime during the 2014 Ramadan and, by sheer coincidence, you will find a report on the place on page 8 of the same magazine.

Palm Hill, Sunday 15th December

Ready to rock ...The Day

Golfing in Jakarta can legitimately be compared to a lucky draw – with each imposing heavy limits on one’s ability to control the outcome.

Bad weather for example is the primary killer of golf outings and the one we are least able to control, with or without our resident Pawang Hujan. Over booking tee times has been known to keep us away from courses such as JABABEKA, the course “Starter” slotting flights of slow playing Koreans between Tee Set groups has been known to absent us from Pangkalan Jati as well, while poor course maintenance currently has us  looking for an alternative monthly medal location.

Buddy, can you spare a cart?

Buddy, can you spare a cart?

One course that has however never let us down in the past is the normally Tee Set friendly Palm Hill  – but they were to try exceptionally hard on Sunday. At our allotted tee time of 12:16 there were 38 enthusiastic Tee Setter ready to do battle off two allocated tee boxes – but golf carts were nowhere to be seen. The morning golfers returned two carts every 10 minutes, so it was a good hour before we all got away – and then only to be held up on every tee box. Three hours for the first 9 holes was asking a little much and there were some early retirements.

Next Up: Palm Hill, Sunday 15th December

Palm HillA prompt return to a course of some quality is in store for those willing to venture out on Sunday for a round at the delightful Palm Hill Golf Club.

One of the easiest courses to find on the Tee Set itinerary, just come off the southbound Jagowawi Tol at the Sirkuit Sentul exit and follow the signs for a couple of clicks. Tell the guy who will stop you at the Sirkuit entrance that you are going to the golf course and he will let you pass.

With the rainy season starting to get into third gear already, we have our very own Pawang Hujan fully mobilised and he has assured us that he will be “on the spot” to ensure uninterrupted play on Sunday.

15 signed up for Palm Hill already but plenty of room for more, so sign up here if you haven’t yet for a very reasonable 508,000 roops including shared cart and an 12:16 tee time.

See yah Sunday! … Tee Set

PS in an exciting and hot off the presses development, the following week on Sunday 22nd December sees us return to the top class Riverside GC course for the first time since October 2012 – and at the reasonable price of 745,000 roops if at least 30 Tee Setters show up, 795,000 if less than 30 ….

Pangkalan Jati, Sunday 8th December

The Day

Official tee time was 11:30 but players were still drifting in to register after 11:15. The reason for the late shows was traffic but why would anybody in their right mind want to take on the Fatmawati market at 10:30AM. Peter Rancamaya excluded of course since he just loves close encounters with the Metro Mini drivers and the push and shove to get through the market sellers without running someone over.

IMG_0456Pangkalan Jati has always been a walking course but the management in recent times has decided to accommodate the more senior players by offering  carts. Nevertheless the Rp410,000 for walkers is still hard to beat even with the bribes needed for the starter to get us off on time. The food and beverage selection, quality and price are still good compared to many other courses.

There were a number of skeptics saying we wouldn’t finish the round because rain was predicted however all the groups made it through although the last two received a bit of a drenching for being slow.  Goetz Ebbecke was our only newcomer, a warm welcome to him, and in the welcome back category were Joe Alchi and Mark Blake, the latter of whom we haven’t seen since his last visit from Down Under in December 2012.

The Play

PrizesEight skirts would have to be close to a Tee Set record since the PJ course and this despite not being set up to favor the ladies in any special way – unlike Jagorawi for instance.

IMG_0465

IMG_0457Joe Alchi in fact stated that the red tee boxes were too close and added pressure to his tee shots because he was intimidated by being able to see the red tees out of the corner of his eye while addressing the ball. Nathan Belete owned up to a skirt missed by his flight buddies and was looking for favor from the ex President of Everything but this fell on deaf ears as you will see from the photos.  After all Nathan. Tee Set is not a charity.

When considering the 30 male golfers who played Sunday, 8 skirts on the day equates to nearly a 30% likelihood of earning a fine. So many in fact that the skirt photo shoot had to be broken into two sessions.  That said, it does seem rather harsh to award Leona a skirt. Your scribe missed Sunday, so shome mishtake here shurley?

Other observations worthy of mention was returnee Mark Blake taking on Sam Westen for low gross. Sam came out on top in the end with a 73 but without shooting his usual eagle. Mark would have taken low net with his 69 had he had the required minimum 5 cards for a Tee Set handicap.

IMG_0468Mark subsequently promised to provide the required number of cards even if they are from his home course in Brisbane. Sam was next in line with his 70 but already had low gross so James Ross’s net 72 was the score that took the money. Sam was also in line for low putts but was matched by Graham McGeady’s 26.

There was quite a number of sandy pars but we had to go all the way up to hole 17 to find a winner who didn’t already have a prize or had not left for home before the awards.

Fuller. player by player results can be found here.

Next Week

Just six weeks since our last visit to that fine and reasonably priced course off the Jagorawi Tol, Palm Hill. On that occasion Joseph Peries took Low Net with a 74 off the stick while Mo Maharam put in one of his best performances of the year with a Net 69. With the holiday season coming up we are, however, unlikely to match the 39 Tee Setters we saw out on that occasion.

Tee off from 1 and 10 a little later than usual at 12:16 when green fees etc including shared cart will be just 508,000 roops. There is no walking option as the course went “cart only” earlier in the year. Let us know if you intend playing by registering here as usual. See yah Sunday! …. Tee Set

Next Up: Pangkalan Jati, Sunday 8th December

This is NOT the PJ starter

This is NOT the PJ starter

We have had our issues with Pangkalan Jati in the past, largely due to the starter’s propensity for inserting large numbers of Koreans into our field, however, there is no doubting that it is a very decent course and worthy of our attention from time to time.

No straight up and down track this, possessed as it is of a wide variety of interesting holes, as all those who have tried putting a second shot over the river at the par five 1st, the graveyard at the par 5 twelfth or, for the truly brave, going atop the jungle with their drive at the par 4 seventeenth will testify.

An 11:30 tee off from 1 and 10 as ever at PJ – and while the clubhouse remains incommunicado we believe green fees to be a reasonable 475,000 including cart, or 375,000 for walking an eminently walkable course. If you haven’t already then let us know if you intend playing here.

We recently provided a link to the Golf Indonesia report on our activities in October and a copy of the whole magazine was in the recent Tee Set Championship goody bag. If you have read any of that lot then perhaps you could spare 5 minutes to provide them with some feedback here?

Golf Indonesia’s support of Tee Set will continue in December with a full report on the Tee Set Championship itself
