Palm Hill, Sunday 3rd November

The Day

Something of a cavalier decision to take on Palm Hill given the recent rains, however, the gamble was to be richly rewarded with some sublime weather, hot and sunny to start with, pleasing cloud cover on the back nine providing a delightful coolness and, to cap it all, a downpour just one minute after the last group got into the clubhouse 🙂  Our Pawang Hujan in Residence, Graham ‘Grumpy’ McGeady, took full credit for this showing of course!

The starter commenced getting groups away a full one hour before the official tee off time so some late arrivals were to find found an empty clubhouse though, luckily, there were empty slots in the last groups still waiting on the tee boxes.

A good turnout as always at Palm Hill, with 39 Tee Setters attracted by its increasingly well known virtues; and a relatively smooth journey back on the Jagorawi Tol for those leaving after prize giving was something of an unexpected bonus.

We were to find a course in prime condition, certainly the best that your scribe has ever seen it and, with the 2014 programme currently being put together, we intend to ensure that Palm Hill is blessed with our presence on at least 4 occasions during next year’s play.

Lovely scenery throughout, not least from both our caddies and the clubhouse staff who must surely put Palm Hill right up there in the top 3 of Jakarta courses in these respects at least. Here is the newly scalped President of Everything fulfilling one of the more pleasant of his many duties by showing his appreciation to the restaurant staff after  the prize giving. We guess someone has to do it. Continue reading

Next Up: Palm Hill, Sunday 3rd November

palmhillWe last played Palm Hill on the 5th May when, in something of  a tribute to the quality of the course and indeed the reasonableness of its green fees, 46 Tee Setters showed up – and witnessed Joseph Peries shooting 74 off the stick to take Low Gross while Nuri Puzey and Cucu Chandra both shot net 68s to take Low Net honours.

With Jakarta and environs on the cusp (and very possibly more) of the rainy season, this will be our last trek down the Jagorawi Tol for a while so join  the 25 Tee Setters who have already signed up for a last look at the mountains this year.

Green Fees of 508,000 including shared cart won’t kill you, while a shotgun start at 1pm has its attractions for many too, so, if you haven’t already, register here as usual.

Find your handicap for Palm Hill here – Red, Blue

Tee Setter RoundsWe are coming up to the 2013 Tee Set Championships of course and it is looking like it is going to be a great event once again with a full house looking forward to all the fun and games – 90 players already registered so this is probably your last chance to grab a place for arguably the best Society golf day of the year available in Jakarta.

We are compiling the usual stats ready for our annual bean feast and can share some interesting play statistics with you about Sundays played by Tee Setters since the last Championship. A minimum of 15 Sundays played constraint still gives us a remarkable 35 Tee Setters on the list.

You will see that the President of Everything has been beaten out of his “most played” title for once, with only home leave ever keeping everyone’s favourite Swiss off the course on a Sunday morning. Well done, Evaldo.

See yah, Sunday …. Tee Set

PS In an unfortunate development, Chris Murchison’s golf bag and clubs were stolen from his place a couple of weeks ago – the bag is a dull green material with the Manila Dogs logo. while the irons and driver are all Taylormade. Keep an eye out for them, the bag at least is unique in Jakarta anyway!!

Matoa Monthly Medal, Sunday 27th October

20131027_103651

The Day

Yes, Tee Set is starting them off younger and younger in its search for the next Tiger Woods, and above is our newest young recruit, and we don’t mean Geoff Thwaites, we mean Steve Wood’s little lad Zach of course, pictured above taking the risk of being dropped by Uncle Geoff, though with Dad keeping a close eye on things from an HSE point of view 🙂

At a Matoa that has clearly benefited from the recent light rains, we were to have a more acceptable track than that rock hard and rutted affair with which we were presented last month. On the day, however, the weather was sublime and rain-free, though it is clearly time for Graham McGeady to dust off his Pawang Hujan skill set and get it back into action on our behalf.

Prize giving chaosParticularly pleasing to see so many stay for the Medal prize giving this week and it was all a lot of fun – even though the President of Everything was at half normal volume due to a condition whose nature and cause he was reluctant to discuss in any detail at all.

Another bumper day for Newcomers this week so a warm Tee Set welcome to all of Aljosja van Dorssen, Daan Zoet, Josiana Derguini, Tim Parson and Villy Parson. Come back soon. Continue reading

Next Up: Matoa Monthly Medal

Mels a winner

The monthly hunt for a Tee Set medal resumes on Sunday when last month’s rather surprised looking winner, Mel Meeds. will, along with 6 other past winners, be trying to become the first two-time holder of the coveted award

Around forty others will be trying quite hard to stop them. and amongst their number will be one man very anxious to to get his name etched on the Honours Board by taking advantage of a brief visit to his former home in the sun, Dave Tarcy. Welcome back, Dave!

At Matoa of course with a tee off from tee boxes 1 and 10 at 11:30 – and green fees etc of 540,000 roops walking, or 610,000 with a shared cart.

Golf Coach Michael Shelton is offering Tee Setters looking to improve their game a discount of 20% against rack prices for normal single lesson and 5 lesson packages and 10% on others, this is good until the end of 2013; check out the classifieds here.

We will once again try to get early arrivers away first on Sunday, so don’t be late, especially as the started is pretty confident of getting us away a little after 11:00 –  if you haven’t done so already then please register here to help us get the administration in shape for what will undoubtedly be a busy day.

Despite our new policy, Peter Bush arrived early and got off in the last group at Rancamaya last Sunday; we will right that wrong this week, Peter!

See yah Sunday! … Tee Set

PS with a little luck, the additional 30th Anniversary shirts, which are newly arrived in Jakarta, will be logo-ed up in time for us to bring them along on Sunday for those who are registered for the Medal.

PPS the Tee Set Midweek have a change of plan and instead of Tuesday next week at Pondok Cabe, they will be trying out the upgraded Senayan Course at a special 11:00 rate of 350,000 roops. As ever with the Midweekers – just turn up and play.

Rancamaya, Sunday 20th October

starting offOn the cusp of the rainy season, we were taking something of a chance in booking the lovely Rancamaya course, however, this was a gamble to be richly rewarded as we got a course in tip-top condition in what turned out to be lovely weather conditions; even 5 minutes of light rain around  the turn was to play to our advantage as we continued without break in temperatures that suddenly dropped a lovely 5 degrees!

Jagorawi TolTraffic to the course in the morning was pretty light though was something of a trial in the evening as we joined the Puncak return traffic. You may very well have noticed the Jagorawi Tol traffic going from bad to worse despite the Jakarta end being widened to 4 lanes each way, and will be something less than surprised at the statistics to the left – and 2012 and 2013 will undoubtedly show over half a million vehicles a day 😦

A lower than average Tee Set turnout affected of course by the mass migration to the charms of Bali for the weekend’s “Bali Classic”, so 39 Tee Setters turning up was a suitable tribute to the pulling power of a wonderful course.

Next Up: Rancamaya, Sunday 20th October

Rancamaya mountain viewUnarguably one of the very finest courses in Indonesia is Rancamaya at the end of the Jagorawi Tol. By happy chance, and through the good offices of long time Tee Setter Juergen Degert, the club offers us the irresistible rate of just 550,000 roops, including shared cart and, as a quid pro quo, we like to give them a nice big turn out.

So if you can play this Sunday get your name registered in the usual way – when we can also give them our list of players beforehand as they require.

Rancamaya, you got to love it – so give yourself a treat this weekend.

See yah there, Tee Set l

Pangkalan Jati – 13th October 2013

The Day

Before we start, we have to relate  that the absence of the all seeing President of Everything looking for Interleague glory at Jagorawi meant that we forgot to take any photos of the day. Apologies from him.

Pangkalan Jati saw 28 Tee Setters blessed with another afternoon of sublime weather, the eighth in a row, a co-operative starter who got us away on time from both 1 and 10,  a decent and more varied than average course in very decent condition – and a reasonably fast round of a little less than four hours. We should perhaps play it more often than we do these days.

A fine day also for new Tee Set recruits, so a warm Tee Set welcome to all of Amanda, Joan. Simon, Renny and Mum and Son combo, Julia and Daniel Wiener. Daniel enjoyed his round very much and even recorded a respectable 44 putts but, at just 9 years old, we kept him out of the Monster Putter competition!

At a similarly sun kissed Jagorawi, the Interleague boys went down to to a 6-4 defeat at the hands of Pocksia, leaving the team in fourth place at season’s end – a significant improvement on last year’s wooden spoon position.

Next Up: Pangkalan Jati, Sunday 13th October

Cute Caddies

It would be unwise to expect to see many of these on Sunday …

Tee Set has probably played Pangkalan Jati more often than any other course over the years and it is therefore pretty much of a known quantity to most of us.

For relative newcomers, however, we can tell you that  the course is Tee Set friendly (ie not devastatingly long and with an opposite fairway to catch those big hooks and slices on most holes) as well as being reasonably priced and comes with good cold beer and decent food.

On the downside, due to the course being established long ago in the days before cute caddies became de rigeur, the caddies are male, old and crusty in the main but most of them can read a green.

Green Fees etc are 375,000 walking and 100,000 for a shared cart. Tee off from 1 and 10 at 11:30. Please register here as usual.

See yah, Sunday! … Tee Set

Pondok Cabe, 6th October 2013

A what of caddiesThe Day

With the management starting off a seemingly endless procession of Koreans from tee box 10 we were, with an unexpectedly high 46 Tee Setters showing up at Pondok Cabe, left to get everyone away from just tee box 1 – and 12 groups at 8 minute intervals takes a while.

While a pain, we were lucky to get in at all at short notice we suppose and the patience and good attitude which is the trademark of Tee Setters – and a willingness to eat and drink and blather to while away the time. meant that it was a fun day despite this, though about half our group had, perhaps understandably, left by the time we got around to prizes.

All this did mean, however, that Tee Set did very nicely in raising a nice sum towards the very large expenses involved in the upcoming 2013 Tee Set Championship.

A third of the group were ‘Welcome Back’ players and some such as Frank Wilson, Mike Taylor and Jeff Leaver we haven’t seen in a very long time. And Mike flew off immediately after the round, so see you next year, Mike!

New players to welcome were Mark Stuart, and Clint and Karen Armstrong. We are sure you enjoyed yourselves enough to show up again next week, especially Karen who needs to pass the Monster Putter monkey on to the next winner.

The Play

Prizes

A happy Deddy shows us the money ...

A happy Deddy shows us the money …

We do believe that Deddy’s net 68 and the Low Net award was his best performance ever and, as was said at the time, Deddy is no sandbagger so well done to him. Low Gross to Simon Reynolds for a fine 79 was immediately followed by an urgent invitation tor him to join the Interleague team next week, where he and Sam Westen would be nightmare opposition for anyone.

A couple of those Tee Set Matchplay Championship matches also got played with Bob Fleischmann turning Paul Evison over 3 up, while Alastair Livingston took until the 19th hole.  literally, to overcome the challenge of a fired up Jan Janda. Well done all, not least because this releases the Matchplay logjam.

scrubbed up wellFinally, just two skirts today for the grievous crime of failing to reach the ladies’  tee, though only Keith Miler hung around long enough to cough up his fine – and be pictured in the full regalia while complaining volubly that the President of Everything had chosen the wrong week to remember to bring the kit along.

The very lovely Valerie Svobodova, as winner of the Most Strokes award, snuck into the picture to provide a yardstick as to just how well Keith brushes up in the regalia.

Fuller, player by player results can be found here.

Tee Set 30th Anniversary Shirts

The shirts we had made for our 30th Anniversary event proved to be something of a hit with Tee Setters – and those who didn’t order originally have inundated us with hopeful “orders” for their own.

As we have had to put in an order for five of them “lost” somewhere in the supply chain, adding some more has not been an issue. But please check this list if you think you have put in an order and not received a shirt as there is another week before the restocking arrives with our supplier, and perhaps another week for the embroidering to be done. Let us know here if you have an issue like your order not being on there.

2013 Tee Set Championship

In  the near future, Tee Setters who have had played 5 or more matches since the last Tee Set Championship will receive an e-mail invitation to register for play in this year’s Championship. To secure your own place and preferential “Tee Set regulars price”, you will need to register within 1 week of the invitation; after that the balance of the limited places available will be thrown open to everyone. Please make a note for your diary, 24th November 2013.

Next Sunday

The Interleague team are at Jagorawi for the 7th and final round of the Interleague for which Ric will be in touch while for the rest of us, we visit our former home course at Pangkalan Jati. Very reasonable Green Fees etc excluding cart at 375,000; last time we played the cart fee was 100,000 per player if shared. Please register on “Yes, I’m Playing!” If  you intend joining in the fun.

We are relieved to say that tee off at PJ will be from both tee boxes 1 and 10 after the challenges of Pondok Cabe and, with the Interleague team engaged at Jagorawi new Course, we expect the numbers to be rather less demanding this week.

See yah, Sunday
