Next Up: Pondok Cabe, Sunday 6th October

Pondok cabeHands up all of you who think they are going to Karawang on Sunday to check out their nice new club house.

Put your hands down, because you’re not, they couldn’t find our booking, offered us a 1pm start and hiked the price 30%. Very far from the end of the world however as, after running up a significant phone bill, Wina got us into Pondok Cabe at 11:30 with fees of 400,000 roops including shared cart or 325,000 if you choose to hoof it round this eminently walkable course.

Pondok Cabe is where that band of house husbands, the unemployed and those able to sneak out of the office take their pleasure every Tuesday morning – and they tell us that the course is in fantastic shape for  the time of year and puts Matoa with its concrete fairways and the rest to shame. And the big bottles of Bintang are something of a bargain and the Soto Ayam top drawer.

No need  to change your registration for Sunday if you have already made it, but, if you haven’t registered, then please do so in the usual place.

Matoa Monthly Medal, 29th September

The Day

A dearth of rain over the last couple of months had all of browned, hardened and roughed up the Matoa fairways to such an extent that even a mishit could go 150 yards – and “preferred lies” were to be declared the order of the day. This was not so good for our usual haul of Skirts.

starting chaos

Registration was indeed even more of a zoo than usual

Claiming to be too busy to arrange Nearest the Pin or Longest Drive or even delegate the task, the President of Everything rather generously decided to double all the other prizes – inducing groans from the man charged with looking after the budget for the Tee Set Championship coming up in November – and smiles on the faces of all the day’s winners of course.

Cunningly the President did redeem himself, however, by waiting for most of the winners to pulang before giving out the awards.

New secretary Brenda did a stellar job of getting all 37 players scores input correctly and even managed to smile through the shock of a table rocking slam dunk score card mid-way through the process.

A warm Tee Set welcome to Sherrie Wolff and Mark Bekkering, both playing Tee Set for the first time today – come back regularly both!!

Welcome back to Chris Smith, Brad Sincock, Tom Alcedo, Chazz Hassig, Steve Flint, Mike Spencer, Anna Wilson, Tetty Donelly and Rina Zoet – many of whom we haven’t seen for a considerable time. Good to see you all!

Tee Set’s got Talent!

The Day

Sam and NickyThe Indonesian finals of  the “ASEAN’s got Talent” competition concluded last evening at the Jagorawi Golf and County Club at Karanggan – and with Tee Set providing 13 of the 16 singers and entertainers taking part, with the top 3 progressing to the regional finals in Kuala Lumpur on 13th October.

The Birthday boyYes, it was Geoff Thwaites 70th birthday celebration and Geoff put on drinks, hot dogs and a live band to entertain the many  choosing to stay after the round.

The band from the Bandung Bash spun their magic over the audience and it wasn’t long before a wide array of hidden talents bubbled to the surface, not least those of many Tee Setters.

It really was all great entertainment and top marks to those Tee Setters, and others, who got up on the stage and gave it a go; Interleague popularity would go through the roof if it were followed by this level of fun after every competition round!!Louis Armstrong II

We suspect that our new secretary, Brenda, who was along for intensive training, may well believe every week will be like this. We wish.

Many thanks to Geoff for his generosity, may you have many more birthday parties, Geoff!

The Play

By amazing coincidence, today also saw Tee Set return to take on the Jagorawi New course and a tenacious Sentul Swingers in Round 6 of the Interleague competition. On the back of the Interleague team resurgence this year, the regular Tee Set group also showed support so that, all in all, there were 21 Tee Setters present – not a bad turn out for a difficult course not to everyone’s taste.

Happily, the Interleague match went in our favor with a 6 and 4 win taking us up to a comfortable mid-table position. Sombrero Sam continued his great match play form by winning 5 – 4 in the singles, while Mike Garwood appeared more intent on benefiting the local economy by spraying plenty out of bounds in losing his match by 5 and 4.

The evergreen combination of Peter Reichlmeier and birthday “boy” Geoff Thwaites won their match in a hard fought 2 and 1 while Chris Murchison and Nicky Moir combined well to win 3 and 1. Neil Mullins and Tim Davies fought hard all day and took the game to the 18th only to go 1 down.

All of this puts the team into 4th place on the Interleague ladder – and with still a chance to overtake Tin Cups in the final round. Well done. team.

Bill and Shane celebrate a shared Most StrokesChris Murchison had a moan about paying the Rp100K match fee but got it back anyway with his low gross 87. The other star of the day was Shane Rowles who has somehow reinvented his game – and his current handicap will shortly be in free-fall after taking low net for the second time in three weeks with a solid 70 – and this despite a few hiccups along the way, including a skirt and most strokes on a hole.

Paul Lowndes suffered similarly, also picking up a skirt and most strokes on a hole – but without the consolation of a prize in his case.

Ric Nicky Brenda

Nicky Moir got his money back with a birdie on # 2, Robert Humberson his with a sandy par on #4 and Mike Garwood somewhat redeemed himself with a 7 shot improvement after something of a debacle in his front nine.

Fuller, player by player details can be found here.

Next Sunday

Next Sunday is of course the last of the month so we are back to Matoa once again for the monthly medal – and the chance for glory, bragging rights, Slaney’s finest meat and, if the President of Everything remembers to bring it, the September Monthly Medal itself.

Tee off is at 11AM from two tee  boxes and there is a choice of riding a cart at Rp650,000 or walking at Rp550,000.

As ever, please register at “Yes, I’m playing!!” if you haven’t already.

See yah, Sunday! …. Tee Set

Next up: Jagorawi New Course, 22nd September

Jagowawi

The beautiful Old Course unfortunately – a little more Tee Set friendly than the New

The Interleague team and the rest of us are reunited next Sunday at Jagorawi New Course in what promises to be a fun day in the sun – and in the bar afterwards when we will be celebrating Geoff Thwaites reaching septuagenarian status. Be there, Geoff is getting his wallet out!!

Green Fees etc, including shared cart, will be 800,000 roops and there will be a scramble like start at 12:45 from as many tee boxes as required. Register at “Yes, I’m playing” as usual.

Bintangs Golf DayAnother event that might attract your attention is the Jakarta Bintangs Texas Scramble at Palm Hill on Friday 27th September.

The Bintangs are a group of Aussie Rules players and aficionados – and the event is allegedly the equal of the recent Aussie Embassy day at Gading Raya – and therefore likely to be a whole lot of fun, Get all the details from the flyer here.

Finally, a significant number of Tee Setters expressed an interest in mid-week golf when they registered – and this is to let you know that a number of the pensioned, housewives and sundry other Tee Setters not required to participate in the rat-race take to the fairways of Pondok Cabe every Tuesday morning at 9am. No fees, no registration, no fines, no skirts, no prizes, no nothing – just turn up before nine to take advantage of a very decent course with embarrassingly low mid-week rates in the company of a few of your Tee Set brethren.

See yah Sunday, ….. Tee Set

PS Billy McCarroll is looking to buy a 47″ (or bigger) TV – drop him an e-mail if you can help, he describes the situation as “desperate”!

Royal & Ancient Fatmawati, 15th September

Waiting for the start 2The Day

With the Star Deli Tournament at Matoa taking the attention of many -including the President of Everything, a Star Deli regular- and a couple of no-shows due to the failure of the alarm clocks needed due to an almost unprecedentedly early tee time of 8am, there was a relatively small field of just 17 Tee Setters for the Fatmawati Iron Man competition.

No matter, those playing were blessed with glorious sunshine and Fatmawati fairways in really reasonable conditions for so far into the dry season. As promised, however, the Royal and Ancient’s greens were, erm, “unique” and regularly induced the most bizarre of behaviour in even the most expensive of golf balls.

Joe AlciJoe Alci returned for one of his rare outings and was to pay the penalty with the lack of hand-hardening activity bringing about a lot of skinning. Playing more often will spare you the pain, Joe!

Cheap and cold beer, excellent Bakso Kuah, a 10 minute journey to the course for many, great weather and small and crap greens, who could want for more ? – all agreed that it had been a fun day and that we should return to Fatmawati again – but that once a year was enough 🙂

wot a green

The Play

Prizes

Proving rather more Ancient than Royal, Fatmawati was a significant challenge, and certainly no pushover with just five irons in the bag.

Two Tee Setters revelling in the Challenge posed by greens that wouldn’t be out-of-place on an army assault course were Santi Miller who shot an amazing 39 on the “back nine” to take Low Gross with a total 85 – and Paul Evison who played probably his best ever round to take Low Net with 66. So, Tee Set’s first “Ironman” is ….. a woman ….

“I’m leaving my driver in the bag in future” was Paul’s view after a round in which he was to stay on the fairway with far greater frequency than is his wont. Santi also took Low Putts by some way with 29 – but suffered under the “one prize only” rule – and was also less than 12 inches away from her second hole-in-one of the month at the par three 9th!!

Judi Helsing had something of a dream day with First par for >= 30 handicap – and then rubbed it in with her first ever birdie! Husband Ed was also in the money with a share of Most Improved.

A warm Tee Set welcome to both David Shenman and Mike Spencer; trust us guys, the courses get much better! Mike immediately entered into the spirit of things by taking 41 putts therby enriching the Tee Set treasury.

Also adding to the pile needed for the Tee Set Championship in November were Jan Janda, Joe Alci. Mel Meeds, Mitchell Wiener and Nicky Moir, who each failed to reach the ladies’ tee on at least one occasion during the day. And Santi Miller proved a most enthusiastic “enforcer” by ensuing all fines were collected for once.

Waiting for the start

Full player by player results can be seen here.

Next Sunday

As trailed last week, the whole Tee Set group, both Interleague team and “socialites” alike, is back together at Jagorawi New Course on Sunday 22nd September for the first time this year in a long pre-arranged date that, for once, has not changed.  Rather unfortunately, the club’s propensity for treating its agreement with the Interleague as a convenience has not entirely gone away – and tee time will be at “around” 12:45 rather  than the usual 09:30.

With a shotgun start promised, all should at least finish before dark. Relatively reasonable green fees etc for a course of this quality of 800,000 roops, including shared cart, are somewhat offset by beers at 50,000 a shot.

Geoff Thwaites confirmed that his upcoming birthday is actually his 70th and not as previously and erroneously reported, his 69th; a Freudian slip on our part one imagines. Also confirmed is that, immediately after the Interleague formalities are over, Geoff will be standing his hand at the Jagorawi bar for all those who would wish to join him in celebrating this milestone in a lifetime of hard work – and an awful lot of golf and fun!!

Should be a great day, so do sign up at “Yes, I’m playing!” if you haven’t done so already.

See yah Sunday, Tee Set

Fatmawati and Jagorawi

fatmawati 1

Fatmawati – no carts, but the caddies are willing to carry you ….

Bakso to die forFor those who haven’t done so already, a reminder to fill in “Yes, I’m playing!” for the Royal and Ancient Fatmawati on Sunday, starting at 8am when a fun day in the sun is promised, not least for lovers of fine Bakso washed down with a cold one from Anker Bir.

Early this year it was decided by the people asleep at the wheel your hard working committee that an alternative venue to Jagorawi would be offered each time the Interleague team played there. The reasoning behind this was principally that many of us, erm, less skilled golfers, were paying a very premium price for the privilege of shooting 10 or more strokes higher than usual due to the punishing nature of the Jags New Course.

The policy has been pretty successful and combined attendance at Jags plus the alternate have been significantly higher than we used to get at Jags alone.

Geoff Thwaites - a man of many talents

Geoff Thwaites – a man of so many talents

In a one-off reversal of that policy however, it has been decided that we will all play at Jags on the 22nd September – for one they have dropped their price to a still high but rather more reasonable 800,000 roops all-in including shared cart – and it also gives us a chance to celebrate 2 time President Geoff Thwaite’s 69th (?) birthday immediately after the Interleague prize giving.

Geoff is throwing a wedge behind the bar to get the party going – and who knows what other “fun” he has up his sleeve?

You will be relieved to know, however, that before agreeing to the party, your Committee wisely obtained a firm commitment from Geoff not to sing the “Purple People Eater” again.

See yah at Fatmawati – don’t miss what will be one of the fun days of the year!! …. Tee Set

Next up: Fatmawati Iron Man Competition, Sunday 15th September

iron-manThe last few months have see us visiting some of the very finest courses that Indonesia has to offer including Bogor Raya, Royale Jakarta, Rancamaya, Genung Geulis and Jagorawi. Next week we visit somewhere rather more prosaic, the course affectionately, if rather cynically dubbed the “Royal and Ancient Fatmawati”.

Fatmawati holds a place dear to the hearts of many expats who have spent time here in Jakarta having seen, as it has, the start of so many dodgy golf careers over the years with its totally laissez faire to play and players. An ideal launching pad for a golfing career as they care little about dress and even less about your swing or handicap, with paying your green fees and the caddies being the only criterion for entry to its half decent fairways and rather unique greens.

Adding to Fatmawati’s attractions are the excellence of the Bakso Kuah, acknowledged to be the finest available on a Jakarta golf course – and beer nearly as cheap as you will find at your local IndoMaret , hardly surprising as that is where they get it from.

To celebrate its part in Jakarta’s golf history, Fatmawati  will be the setting for Tee Set’s first ever Iron Man Competition next Sunday, with rules as follows:

– you may only carry 5 irons (the definition of which for these purposes includes a putter if you want one – but NO rescue clubs, woods or drivers please)

–  otherwise standard Tee Set stroke play with all the usual prizes and forfeits

First tee off will be at 8am and, with Fatmawati being a 9 hole course, Tee Setters are free to stop off for a relaxing refreshment break halfway through their round. Green Fees etc will be just 155,000 roops walking – they don’t do carts!

Kedaton, Sunday 8th September

The Day

21 players made the trek along the Merak Tol on Sunday to reach the delightful Kedatan Country Club.

The flight path from Singapore into Cengkarang airport often crosses over this course and the view from the air is quite frightening with nearly all fairways following a water course on the left or right side. Back on the ground however it was not so intimidating and some pretty low scores were posted.

The course was in exceptional condition and showing no signs of dry season wear and tear. Greens were true and smooth as proven by the fact that nobody succumbed to the monster putter penalty as, with just 37 putts being the highest recorded, even out flint hearted treasurer refused to take the money!!

The caddies were friendly as always, the course un-crowded and the restaurant staff attentive. Doesn’t get much better but GT may beg to differ on one item at least.

Warm welcome to new player David Shenman who avoided most penalties except the skirt.

Finally, congratulations to Jesse Baker on the birth of his baby girl. Well done mate and we’ll see you next week at the Iron Man event…..correct? Or is it nappy changing duties?!

The Play

Prizes

Welcome back to long time Tee Setter Alex Kushnir who was back from the States for a visit. Alex was back into the money immediately in snatching a low gross shared by Steve Wood who has finally hit some form.

A big welcome back also to Alex;s wife Elina who missed out on a skill prize put still managed to secure a special edition Tee Set cap to take back to the good old US of A.

We haven’t seen Nicky Moir for a while due to visiting spouse issues and we assume no golf has been played during that as, after a woeful front 9 he improved by 9 shots to take most improved. Paul Lowndes played the best round of his life to shoot a net 66 but was short of the necessary 5 cards top get an official handicap. Nevertheless we still allowed him to buy a bunch of beers after the game to celebrate.

Low net honours went instead to Mel Meeds who is looking for a bit of confidence before taking on the Interleague match play on the 22nd.

Graham McGeady thought he had the worst caddy of all time (again) until she gave him the right line to sink the first birdie put on hole 4.

Other prizes were longest drive to Steve Wood with 242 meters and closest to the pin for David Baglivo with 7.4m. David by the way made the mistake of playing his match play game against Wina on her home course. No surprise when Dave was smashed 5 and 4.

Evaldo and Unknown skirtsOthers who earned a skirt beside David Shenman were John Suermondt and Evaldo Roos who we’ve put on the disciplinary panel’s watch list due to their distinct lack of humiliation in wearing the wig and skirt. Hey guys, this is suppose to be serious penalty!!

Full details of player by player results can be found here.

Next Sunday

To celebrate its significant part in Jakarta’s expat golf history, Fatmawati  will be the setting for Tee Set’s first ever Iron Man Competition next Sunday, with rules as follows:

– you may only carry 5 irons (the definition of which for these purposes includes a putter if you want one – but NO rescue clubs, woods or drivers please)

–  otherwise standard Tee Set stroke play with all the usual prizes and forfeits

First tee off will be at 8am and, with Fatmawati being a 9 hole course, Tee Setters are free to stop off for a relaxing refreshment break halfway through their round. Green Fees etc will be just 155,000 roops walking – they don’t do carts!

Next Up: Kedaton, Sunday 8th September

KedatonThat fine if exceedingly “watery” course, Kedaton, out on the Merak Tol is our destiny for Sunday’s round.

Not unlike the infamous JABABEKA, it is possible to go badly astray on the Jalan Tol, so here are some wise words from the President of Everything.

Heading west on the Merak Tol and at Kilometer Post 30 get into the left lane that brings you to the far left toll booth at Kilometer Post 32. Do not enter any other booth because there is a road divider. After exiting the booth take the fly over that crosses over the toll road. Drive north for a short distance and take the next left that takes you into the Kedaton Golf Estate.

Green fees etc of 610,000 roops including shared cart or just 500,000 walking – and a reasonable tee off time from 1 & 10 at 11:00. Hard to beat that.

Finally, quite a number of you took the trouble to visit our “appeal” page  about a fellow expat in need of help. You may be interested to know that the campaign to get experimental stage drugs for Nick, the only thing that can prolong his life, has gained some further momentum with this article published in the Sydney Morning Herald earlier today.
