30th Birthday Round, Matoa, Sunday 1st September

82 Tee Setters all in a row

The Day

Under strict orders from the President of Everything to keep it simple, it all became, erm, a little more complex, not least due to the PoE’s propensity for adding stuff as we went along!!

Registration went smoothly enough with Tuti, acting as secretary for what turned out for the last time, having everything under control while ALL 82 registrants arrived in what must surely be a Tee Set first!

Tee Set Brownie Points for Jesse Baker turning up with his wife on the verge of giving birth to their first child. Jesse was to leave just a little early, and swaying only slightly, with the power of modem communications assuring him that all was still well at home!

The first thing to assail our sense after claiming our Tee Set 30th Anniversary Shirts were Mike Garwood’s fabulous Chilli Beans for breakfast. Given a little extra oomph today in honour of the occasion, word had it that they were powering many players best drives of the season. Mike tells us that the secret is actually not in the chillies but in the frozen Margaritas he adds to the brew; who are we to doubt? …  the result was just outstanding!

The 30th Anniversary Round – final details

After a day of ins and outs, we ended up with 82 players firmly committed for Sunday and we can now, as promised, advise the composition of  the flights for Sunday’s 30th Anniversary round. Unfortunately however, we cannot yet tell you the tee box or time for the flights as we will hopefully have mini shotgun start – and the details of this arrangement have yet to be made known to us by Matoa. All will be revealed Sunday

Flights

One thing we can tell you about for certain on Sunday are the prizes which will be as follows:

Prizes

Handicaps for Matoa can be found here – blue teesred tees

Finally a reminder that tee offs will start from somewhere at 11:00 and that green fees, including cart, will be 650,000 or 540,000 walking.

Good luck to all  – and most of all, enjoy Tee Set’s 30th birthday!

See yah, Sunday … Tee Set

30th Anniversary Round registrations CLOSED

unsmileyRegistration for the 30th Anniversary Round at Matoa is now CLOSED as, with 80+ players already signed up, we have more than reached the limit of what can reasonably be accommodated.

Full details of the arrangements for the day, including flights and handicaps will be posted later.

Should you have registered but now look like not being able to play then do let us know, it will make someone on the standby list very happy!

Cheers, Tee Set

JABABEKA, Sunday 25th August

The Day

caddies at restJABABEKA, out on Jakarta’s eastern flatlands, attracted 33 Tee Setters by being a very decent course with excellent facilities, reasonable F&B pricing and, by and large, cute and knowledgeable caddies.

Regrettably, however, we get shafted every time we go there by a Starter looking to optimise his income stream. Today was to be no exception with a “promise” to start from tee boxes 1 and 10 melting in the hot sun of the best weather of the year so far, and this together with bunching of anywhere between 3 and 5 groups at some of the par threes, a 5 hour plus round was to be the order of the day – on top of the last groups having to wait an hour or more for their tee time to roll around.

Really all rather depressing and we will not be back in a hurry – to say the least of it.

toko JABABEKA

All that said however, traffic each way was relatively light, the weather had everyone in a good mood and the course is relatively “Tee Set Friendly” – while the rather unique toko at the side of the 14th (?) allowed stocking up with beers, fruit and veg, golf balls, golf gloves and heaven knows what else, and all at very reasonable prices. Not that one or two carts needed much in the way of stocking up, resembling from the start something more akin to the Kemang Duty Free Shop than anything else!

Next up: JABABEKA, Sunday 25th August

JABABEKAYep, that fine course, JABABEKA, provides your last opportunity with Tee Set to fine tune your game for the 30th Anniversary round at Matoa on the 1st September.

If you intend playing JABABEKA (we have 18 eager Tee Setters registered already) then please fill in the usual form here.

Tee off will be from 1 and 10 at 11:50 with green fees etc, including shared cart and a really rather decent meal after the game at 800,000 roops.

We make no apologies for repeating, for the benefit of the inexperienced and/or forgetful, that it is possible to come seriously unstuck getting to the course by failing to come off the Cikampek Tol in time. Here is the President of Everything’s guidance on the issue, in a vivid red so that even the half awake might notice it.

We seldom visit JABABEKA without a casualty from failing to exit early enough on the Cikampek Tol heading east – get into the far left lane at no later than kilometer post 27 and exit at the next gate, Cikarang Barat (?). Failure to do so will ruin your day, trust us in this matter.

Finally, we are struggling to work out how many will be attending the 30th Anniversary round though, having 95 shirts ordered for the event, and even discounting double and overseas based Tee Setters orders, we suspect it will be quite a lot more than usual!

Can you please therefore help us if you intend playing by, as SOON as possible, completing the form on this page with the simple details requested.

See yah, Sunday! … Tee Set

Rancamaya, Sunday 18th August

SalakhThe day
As mentioned in our “Next up“, there is absolutely nothing not to like about the divine Rancamaya, though we can tell you there is now a small caveat about beer prices, since two cans of the amber aiming fluid will leave you no change from a Rp100K note. Luckily a few red ones were still available in the wallet after paying the very reasonable green fees of Rp550K.

Otherwise, just an absolutely glorious day, though a few groups were deprived of play on the last hole by some nasty late lightning.

Thankfully, predictions of traffic doom and gloom as a result of the ending Mudik festivities proved wide of  the mark, and those taking their time after the game were treated to very decent catering, a wonderful sunset and a delightful view of a cloud-free Gunung Salak.

The event was set up by long time Tee Setter, Juergen Dergert, and we thank him once again for his sterling efforts to win over course management to our cause.

Forty seven golfers showed up over a 1 hour period prior to tee off which created quite a challenge for the President of Everything (PoE) who was tasked with balancing the groupings. Apologies to those who ended up being bumped around a bit but a little confusion is inevitable with the large numbers of players showing up these days.

Alan and AnnSecretary Tuti, fresh from her 2 week Mudik break, was also challenged by 10 new names out the 47 players appearing in the score sheet. Welcome to all our new players – we hope you’ll be back for more next week at Jababeka and/or many weeks thereafter.

Pictured are Allan and Ann Lees, holiday making in Indonesia but hoping to get back from time to time!

The play

Prizes

Ric and Richard

Sad to report that Richard Newcombe played his last game with Tee Set after 58 starts over the past two years. However he can now breathe a sigh of relief as the only Tee Setter in living memory who has avoided earning a skirt over such a protracted period. Nonetheless, being his last event we made him wear it, and  the wig, anyway.

skirts

The real culprits on the day who truly earned the privilege to wear the skirt were Evaldo Roos, Mehdi Davoudi, Ben Kidd, Marshall Jones, Dale Drader, John Suermondt, Mike Webb and Edwin Thieroff who helped put a smile back on the Treasurer’s (PoE) face after some lean weeks. Harold Haynes reports that he has purchased a new driver that performs so well that he is now able to reach greens in regulation again…but only if he is allowed to tee off from the white tees. On Sunday he got such a wish since the green keeper had moved the blues up to the whites on most tee boxes. So how many greens did you hit in regulation, Harold?

An exciting finish to the match play between Joseph Periers and Koen Verhayen. All square with one to play with Koen having 2 strokes in hand coming to the last tee box. So how did he lose? Makes a great story but not enough space here to describe it – so get it first hand when you catch up with either one of them.

Peter “Rancamaya” Reichlmeier played Anthony King in his long awaited match play but went down 6 and 4 on Anthony’s home course, Jagorawi. Double whammy for Peter who also missed out on playing his favorite course.

Malcolm McDonald and Joseph Peries both shot 75 to share the money for low gross although Malcolm gets bragging rights by having the better back 9, low putts and first sandy. Neil Mullins playing in the same group as Malcolm took low net with a sparkling 67. Bill Tevruchte, also in the same flight, might have felt a little intimidated by these performances, especially since it was his first round in two years. Welcome back Bill – and the other 14 returnees who we haven’t seen around in a while.

For a full summary of results please open the link to the score sheet here.

Next Sunday

In line with Interleague advice we had listed next Sunday as an Interleague day for a number of months, however, now it isn’t –  so, happily, Tee Set will play together as just one group next Sunday – and at JABABEKA. The fee of 800,000 roops on this high quality cart-only course includes a post-round meal so don’t forget to take it – you’ve paid for it!!

Please register your intent to play at “Yes, I’m playing!” as ever.

We have had issues with sub-par Starter performance at JABABEKA on at least our last two visits, so there will be no Starter Tip until after the round this time – with its dimension entirely dependent on performance. Conversely the last year has seen better traffic conditions to and from JABABEKA on the Cikampek Tol than to be found on the Jagorawi Tol, so we have fingers crossed for a smooth journey both ways.

We seldom visit JABABEKA without a casualty from failing to exit early enough on the Cikanpek Tol heading east – get into the far left lane at no later than kilometer post 27 and exit at the next gate, Cikarang Barat. Failure to do so will ruin your day, trust us in this.

Finally, a reminder that the Tee Set 30th Anniversary event is coming up the week after, so if you haven’t already, then get that into your diary as it promises to be a lot of fun! The 30th Anniversary shirts will be delivered during the week and will only be available on the day itself unfortunately. On top of the 95 shirts ordered (and mainly paid for) we have 30 extra in a full range of sizes for sale on the day or the rest of the year, so don’t worry, we have you covered (sic).

See yah, Sunday!! …. Tee Set

Next up: Rancamaya, Sunday 18th August

RancamayaThere is absolutely nothing not to like about the divine Rancamaya, except its location which can be something of a trial when competing with Puncak traffic on a Sunday afternoon, something which one would struggle to describe as fun.

Hopefully, with Lebaran just over, the locals’ desire for visits to Puncak will be at a low and we will only have to compete with stragglers coming back after their “Mudik”.

Register for the round here at “Yes, I’m playing!” if you haven’t already.  There has been little demand for the Tee Set Magic Bus from Hero Kemang and so has been withdrawn and alternatives provided for the few needing transport.

Tee off from both tee boxes 1 and 10 at 11:30 with every chance of getting away a little earlier, so do plan to get there no later than 10:45 when, in very stark contrast to last week at Pondok Cabe, we will have a little time to sort the flights out.

Green Fees are an unbelievably attractive 550,000 roops for a course of this quality, including shared cart. There is no walking option.

Handicaps for Rancamaya can be found here – Blue Tees, Red Tees

See you Sunday!!

Cheers, Tee Set

Pondok Cabe, 11th August

The Day

Pondok Cabe was once again to come up trumps with probably the best weather of the year so far, certainly the hottest; wallet friendly beer pricing and fairways in pretty lush condition. The greens left a little to be desired in truth, though an overall average of 33.8 putts shows that they were in fact to the taste of most Tee Setters, being pretty flat and true in the main.

We don’t keep details of Tee Setters’ dates of birth, however, we guess the average age would be somewhat north of 45, so it is always good to see fresh young blood joining us to bring down the average. Here is our latest recruit, pictured in a rather windscreen affected photo between Mum and Dad!

Family Romango

Regrettable late withdrawal by an Ivan Byriel afflicted with a bad dose of “Sukarno’s Revenge” – get better soon Ivan!!

The Play

Prizes

Sam Westen’s golfing experience continued to broaden with his first round at Pondok Cabe where unfamiliarity with the course led to “only” a six over par 78 – but still good enough to take Low Gross. Keith Miller’s first round for a month due to shoulder issues was richly rewarded with a net 71 to take Low Net.

Sam gets his just rewards

Sam gets his just rewards ….

For reasons that remain unclear, the President of Everything, freshly returned from witnessing the Baggys being trashed by the Poms in the UK, decided to award Keith an “Ashes” cricket ball to go with his 100,000 roops.

... while Miller gets his cherry

… while Miller gets his cherry

As we have commented before, the infamous skirt has lost some of its original terror and Mike Sperry was positively anxious  to get the pink thing and its accompanying wig on, when he was  to fully enter  the spirit of an hilarious prize awards session by adopting a number of most attractive poses; we can only believe that there is an opening (sic) for you in Blok M, Mike.

Mike gets the dressGood number of Newcomers this week, with all of Anlo du Pisani, Craig Ewers, Giles Taarland, Mike Sperry and Muhammad Alhamami making promising starts – a warm Tee Set welcome to them all!

A very happy Mike Webb took his first ever 1st Birdie while Graham McGready took 1st Sandy on the 3rd for heaven’s sake. Keith Miller was actually in both fairway and greenside bunkers on his way to a par – but on his 16th hole as played.

More detailed, player by player, results can be found here.

In a quite unprecedented piece of lateral thinking, your committee has decided that each winner of the Monthly Medal will receive, wait for it ………. a medal!! The only previous winner of the Monthly Medal present, Mustafa – who took the first event in February – duly got his.

Mustafa gets his medal

Finally well done to Cucu Chandra who was to beat Ric Wyman in the latest installment of the Tee Set Match Play drama; the President of Everything was somewhat reluctant to provide further detail at the time but voluble crowd encouragement finally elicited the result as a 7 and 6 beating, a development that was to draw the loudest cheer of  the day. Ric was to take little consolation in his Most Improved prize and rather unsportingly complained that Cucu “got a stroke on nearly every bloody hole!”. Hee hee, that’s Match Play, Ric!

The BBQ

Great food at the Miller’s BBQ where about 16 turned up after the round to enjoy the Grumpy Pirate’s superlative BBQ-ing skills performed on some excellent beef, chicken and some heavenly pork, and Santi’s wide array of stuff to go with them, address world hunger issues, play some pool (the evening’s champion was Fernando who played alarmingly well and commented that it was better than his golf ) – and generally have a lot of fun. We are anxious to find a volunteer for the next one, so let us know!!

A couple of minor rents in the Lebak Bulus space-time continuum were discovered by John S as he left, with the one under the pembantu‘s chair in the garage being as unfortunate as it was amusing in its result to others, while the second nearly crushed to death our gracious hostess for the evening, who, happily, was to emerge relatively unscathed. Well done to John also for the slab of excellent Bintang donated to keep the party going.

Next Week

Tee Set’s all time record attendance for a regular Sunday event is held by Rancamaya with 68 Tee Setters spoiling themselves rotten earlier this year by making the journey to Ciawi to enjoy what, in the opinion of many – including your humble scribe -, is the finest course in Indonesia.

Get yourself registered at “Yes, I’m Playing” as usual, when, courtesy of Blue Bird, you will also have the opportunity to book yourself on the “Tee Set Express” which will whisk you from Hero Supermarket in Kemang directly to the course.

Cost is just 150,000 roops and guaranteed to be a lot of fun, especially on the way back when, legend has it, the hospitality levels are even higher than at the clubhouse itself. We have the opportunity to take a 9 or 14 seater coach and would appreciate earlier than usual registration this week so that we can make a decision and secure the appropriate vehicle.

Next up: Pondok Cabe, Sunday 11th August

PCFirst up, Selamat Hari Raya Idul Fitri to all!!

After the delights of the inimitable Gunung Geulis, we are back to a rather more bread and butter course this Sunday, Pondok Cabe, a course not without its own attractions, including green fees of just 400,000 roops or 325,000 if you would like to stretch your legs.

Light immediate post-Lebaran traffic is a given and a civilised 11:26 start from the 1st and 10th tee boxes should help make for an enjoyable round.

Please register here if you intend playing on Sunday.

The Millers, living in Lebak Bulus on the road back to Jakarta from Pondok Cabe, are threatening to put the fire under their barbecue after prize giving and open their capacious fridge, so that could be fun too.

Finally, Jesse Baker is downsizing his booze stocks, not least his Jim Beam, and you will find a list of what he is offloading and their prices here. Get in touch with Jesse if you are interested in helping him out.

See yah, Sunday

PS I you really must drink beer then the large Bintang bottles are a bargain, the cans less so!!

Genung Geulis, Sunday 4th August

GGW - hole 1

Hell of a hole – courtesy of Thwaites, G

The day was to got off to the best possible start with the “post-Lebaran exit” traffic in Jakarta and surrounding areas at a level that can only be described as blissful. Despite a nearly empty car park, and a West course in a similar state, play before 12:00 required payment of an extra 400,0000 and not too many bothered, wisely taking breakfast instead.

The writer is firmly of the opinion that the very last time to take a holiday from Jakarta is a week either side of Lebaran as, with the city’s teeming millions largely emptied out into the rest of Java, traffic is a breeze, the courses drop their prices and four hour rounds and faster become the norm. This is not however a view held by all, with lots of Tee Setters on leave and we had a rather low turnout of just 21 therefore for the lovely scenery and reduced fees of Gunung Geulis on a splendid day when the rains were but an ugly, if still vivid, memory.

A number of relatively new Tee Setters who had never played there before, described the West course as pretty wonderful – and as being even better than the Royale Jakarta course recently played. It is indeed rather special.

Just one Newcomer on the day, so a warm Tee Set welcome to Sinta who even managed to improve the scenery and who we hope will return soon if she can ever get Frank off his Harley again.

Joe Alcis' rocks

Joe was there, and there, and …

Many Welcome Backs, most notably Joe Alchi who hadn’t picked up a club in more than a year and who shot a round that proved it, hitting most of the rocks on the course on his way round. You have to play more often, Joe, come back soon!

The Results

Prizes

Fine round from Graham McGeady to take Low Gross with a 79 for his second best ever round off the stick with Tee Set.  Steady golf from the Grumpy Pirate with 11 pars and 7 bogeys and a net 66 took Low Net too.

A small but not insignificant body of opinion had it that there should be a 10 shot penalty for playing the Tee Set course the day before, however, the Committee’s view is that everybody else is perfectly free to do the same and that there should therefore be no such penalty. Case closed.

Tricky greens as ever at Gunung Geulis and a relatively high 30 blows with the putter were enough for Richard Newcombe to take Low Putts.

Cucu with MonkeyJust two birdies on the 378 holes played with one on the 6th for Neil Mullins being good enough to take 1st Birdie. Well done Tom Alcedo for improving by 7 on the back 9 to take his first prize for a while; he was a happy man.

Depressing day for the Treasurer as there were NO SKIRTS – and Monster Putter, Paul Lowndes, was OB when it came to collecting the penalties!

The various flights finished over a very long two hour period and we took a precautionary snap of Cucu before she left early as she was looking a very strong candidate for Monster Putter before she was rescued by Paul.

As it was the only snap your incompetent correspondent managed to take during  the day, Cucu therefore gets to star with the monkey she didn’t deserve 🙂

Full player by player results can be found here.

Next Week

Pondok Cabe is always a popular course with Tee Setters, offering as it does a very decent (and much improved) course at a rate that only a National Oil company could offer at 400,000 roops including shared cart, or 340,000 if walking. Tee off will be from 1 and 10, starting at 11:26 – or rather earlier if as quiet as we expect it to be on the first Sunday after Lebaran.

While Pondok Cabe has a poor reputation, with some, for its traffic, knowing the right way to go helps and traffic next weekend, with millions of vehicles still out of the city, can be expected to be light.  Steak, beers and wine are offered to those up to it after the prizes are given out, at the Miller’s place in Lebak Bulus, conveniently on the way back to the Outer Ring Road at Pondok Indah.

As usual, kindly register here at “Yes, I’m playing!” if you intend doing so.

See yah Sunday ….. Tee Set
