Next Round – JABABEKA, Sunday 3rd March @12:00 noon

jababekaNext up is the smart and (relatively) “Tee Set friendly” JABABEKA course out on the eastern flatlands off the Cikampek toll road; have a look here for some help from Google maps if needed.

Remember to keep left on the toll at KP28 to enable access to the Cikarang exit; you will not believe how important this is until you miss it.

The course is as far away as we ever get from Java’s “rain central” in Bogor so, with some remote assistance from Tee Set’s own Pawang Hujan, we have hight hopes of avoiding the rain once again.

Cost: 800,000 for green fees, caddy fee, shared cart and light meal(excludes caddy tip)

1st Tee off: 12:00 (CHANGE)

Handicaps for JABABEKA have been updated and can be found here.

If you plan on coming to JABABEKA then do please register your intent by completing the simple “Yes, I’m playing” form.

Hope to see ya Sunday ….

Matoa Monthly Medal, 24th February 2013

Mel as MotherThe day’s fun at Matoa for the inaugural monthly medal got off to a great start courtesy of Mike Garwood who, with perhaps just a little help from his “koki”, provided us with a fine brew of hot chili beans ‘n beef that went down extremely well and, washed down with a few jugs of ice cold Bintang courtesy of President Thwaites, saw the many who participated off to a turbo charged start.

MustafaWith a remarkable 45 joining in our first monthly medal, competition was fierce with honours eventually going to the wily Mustafa Baabad with 40 Stableford points; Mustafa thereby taking bragging rights until the March event, a tray of meat donated by Slaney’s Butchery and a bottle of Gentleman Jack.

Mustafa, God bless him was, immediately and very generously, to donate the bottle of Gentleman Jack back to the troops who polished it off in just one circuit of the table. If ever there was any doubt, then this was proof positive that Tee Set has thirsty troops.

The course was wet and not terribly conducive to the use of carts and it was to turn into something rather more like a motor cross scramble than anything else. In truth, however, the course played remarkably well otherwise, and this despite the rivers of rainwater on the fairways after the 4th hole for a while.

Our Pawang Hujan‘s absence in India has clearly had an effect on his concentration but, apparently, after a consultation with his Indian Naga Sadhus, he managed to restore some of his reputation as play continued in perfect conditions after a couple more holes.

The 9th green was playing a little fast for some, so Tee Set secretary Tuti decided to slow it down a bit by walking the full length of the green in her high heel shoes. They won’t need to core the green for at least a month.

A short delay occurred in working out the scores at the end of play due to cards being nearly unreadable when filled with the results of four players. So, for future Stableford events, there will be a maximum of two players on any one card!

No skirt fines on the day was a rare event and not one the Tee Set treasurer would wish to see repeated. Mel Cantarella, where were you?

AbeNo monster putter this week but nevertheless our little monkey mascot inexplicably  jumped on Abe Borden’s back for having just 11 Stableford points for the round.

Joseph Peries failed to win low gross for the first time this year but that may be because we didn’t have the prize to win. Instead, he won first birdie on hole #1 played. Well done, him.

Next Round – Matoa, Sunday 24th February

GJAfter a bit of a practice at the Stableford format last month, we now look forward to the first Tee Set Monthly Medal in earnest next Sunday at Matoa. Yep, Matoa, if someone (like, erm, us) told you Pondok Cabe then ignore them, they don’t know what they’re talking about!

There will be a bottle of Gentlemen Jack whiskey donated by Peter Reichlmeier for the runner up while the everlasting glory of being the first ever winner will also take home a very fine and generously sized meat platter kindly donated by Slaney’s Butchery of Jakarta.

steakAll the usual prizes and, erm, penalties will also be on offer, so remember to putt out as usual, despite the Stableford element to the day 🙂

Tee off will start at 11:28 from both  the 1st and 10th tees, when charges will be Rp.650,000 with shared cart – and Rp.510,000 walking.

If you plan on coming then, please, let us know here so that we have a good idea on likely numbers when engaging in our weekly battle with the Starter. Hope to see you there for a memorable day.

PS thanks to Ric Wymer for bringing this outstanding example of the focus and dedication that even your average club golfer can bring to his or her game.

Jagorawi New Course, 17th February 2013

NEXT SUNDAY: Tee Set’s 1st Monthly Medal at MATOA!!!

(Full details on Thursday)

JAGORAWI New Course played from the white tee boxes (equialent to blue everywhere else in Jakarta) and using the TWO MAN SCRAMBLE format turned out to be a fun day. The format when coupled with a very imaginative handicapping formulae actually ensured a level playing field for most of the teams.

The course despite a lot of recent rain was in great nick although the greens did resemble a motocross track in places. The management has promised to lift their game on this one negative point.

Nice to finally have some pretty female caddies to choose from after what seemed a life time of putting up with cranky male caddies at Jags.

Tee Set fielded 18 players (9 two-man teams) and I am pleased to announce that one of our teams won the overall low net competition with a score of 65.5. Great work by Evaldo Roos and Yohannes Pesch. Second place but closely contested was Mick Kilfoyle and Michael Noyse with a net 66.6. Mike Garwood took closest to the pin for the A grade player so it was almost a clean sweep for Tee Set.

So, is this perhaps a sign of better things to come for Tee Set in 2013? Wooden spooners last year but Interleague captain Peter Reichlmeier has been busy scouting Blok M for new blood (and capable golfers) so the old guard will have to pick up their games to be eligible for team selection this year. The real Interleague match play comp will commence next month. Remember that Tee Set will continue to host its normal Stroke Play event commencing immediately after the Interleague shot gun start at 09:30.

Very little rain experienced on the day so our regular Pawan Hujan once again did an outstanding job although not playing on the day. It was dually noted that beer purchased wholesale for less than Rp10,000 a glass was sold for Rp50,000. A bit tough on the regular Tee Set drinkers, Edwin!!!

Tom Grace arrived late after missing the toll exit for Jags. Bet he’ll never make that same mistake again. On the plus side he finally took home his bottle of Black Label won during last year’s championship event.

Yohannes took home a bottle of wine donated by Geoff T and Mick/Michael grabbed a bottle each from Tee Set. Evaldo the remaining winner will get his bottle next week if he shows up.

Next Round – Jagorawi, Sunday 17th February

The usual reminder that this coming Sunday sees us at Jagorawi New Course for the Interleague 2 man (or woman) scramble, when we will enter as many teams as we can fill before the “shotgun” goes off at 09:30!

All in fees will be Rp.1,000,000 per player, including cart and the Interleague Fee. There will be no Tee Set fee but there will be a couple of bottles of Australia’s finest for the leading Tee Set pairing on the day.

Remember to complete the “Yes. I’m playing” form if you intend playing and haven’t done it already.

You can see your handicap for Sunday here.

Great Grey SharkWe received a short e-mail with a couple of photos enclosed from Michael Baraniak and from which it appears that Tee Set’s fame is spreading wider and wider now – with even the Great Grey Shark seeking out our fabled players these days.

The clear lesson here is to alway carry spare tees and at least 50% proof alcohol in your bag – and maybe a pencil sharpener.

Pic of Daniela to the right; we trust that Tee Setters can agree with the committee’s brave decision. As you will notice, Daniela will not be bothering with carts for a few years yet.

Kedaton, 10th February 2013

A strong field of 35 Tee Setters arrived at West Jakarta’s Kedaton Course in bright sunshine in a new high turnout for the course – and this while our usual South Jakarta haunt was experiencing the finest thunder and lightning show seen this side of New Year – and rain to match.

Remarkably, no one was late and or to miss the toll exit lane thanks largely to the very fine and accurate directions provided in last week’s posting. VP Peter Reichlmeier, standing in for the still absent Geoff Thwaites, was heard questioning what all the fuss was about finding the course!! (Peter has his own driver of 20 years of course)

The Kedaton course was in great nick, however, some long and narrow holes with water running the complete length of the fairway on most holes makes for a greater premium on driving accuracy than is your average Tee Setter’s preference it has to be said, though the submitted score cards were not to reflect this elevated degree of difficulty.

Next Round – Kedaton, Sunday 10th February

KedatonTee off: 11:30

Green Fees etc: 600,000 (about 75,000 less if walking)

Difficult to think of a stronger contrast between two courses than this week’s, Kedaton located in Jakarta’s Western flatlands, and last week’s, Rancamaya, tucked away in the scenic but rainy Bogor hills. No worries as no challenge is too great for your optimistic Tee Setter.

Kedaton offers you a chance to put your Pro V1 into an aqueous and premature grave on nearly every hole, but is a mature and most pleasant course with a convivial clubhouse and staff, excellent Soto Ayam and caddies both pretty and talented in the main.

DangerWe have put the Google map on Kedaton’s own page here but you should pay very special attention to the following piece of advice borne of the hard-won experience of our immediate past President.

“It is VERY IMPORTANT to remember to take the extreme left toll booth when exiting at KP31 on the Merak toll road as we lose one or two every time we visit Kedaton. All other lanes will not allow you to access the overpass to Kedaton. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!”

Tuti has manfully updated the handicaps with the 68 Rancamaya score cards and you will find your own handicap for Kedaton here.

If you plan to come but have yet to register your interest then please do so here.

Finally a reminder of a very worthwhile event next Thursday to aid the Memey Trust – and the many sick and disadvantaged Jakarta kids it helps. Please support if you can, it is a fine initiative and remarkably for Jakarta, untainted by corruption, every penny going to benefit those kids.

If you can’t make the scramble event itself then you might consider making a donation to the Memey Trust Bank Account as follows: BCA Kemang Mansions, 6220296626 in the names of Farida Ariyanti & Irene Hanim.

Rancamaya, 3rd February 2013

Dear All,

A huge day’s golf last Sunday at a sun blessed Rancamaya. Some uncomfortable moments for booking/organizer Juergen Degert as the numbers swelled during the week from 10 booked flights to 68 players – and 17 flights required, a new record for a regular Tee Set Sunday in the memory of those present.

Bloody hell

Luckily the Geoff Thwaites initiated model of early booking confirmation worked like a charm and the starter well-informed of the numbers as they swelled to mini tournament proportions – and earned himself a tidy little tip by managing to organise 8 tee boxes for a mini shotgun start.

carts carts carts

A shame the club house restaurant staff could not raise themselves to even attempt to match such good service – and the price of beer was up too 😦

The reputation of our resident Pawang Hujan, Graham McGeady, is growing from rather better than adequate to absolutely legendary. Who in their right mind would attempt an afternoon’s golf in the Bogor hills during rainy season?

Prior to tee off Graham made no promises but, nevertheless, was to deliver perfect sunny weather despite almost missing the event by failing to check his car’s serviceability before leaving home.

Traffic was non-existent going there and coming back, icing on the cake for a great day. The trip home for those taking the Big Bird bus was so quick in fact that all beers in the essky could not be consumed by arrival time at Kemang Hero. No worries, just meant that an unscheduled secondary stop was required at Star Deli to top up the alcohol levels.

Some very important welcome backs to mention, Ivan Byriel came out for a hit after having his ticker de-coked just two weeks ago but didn’t manage to corner his usual first par prize. Veteran Tee Setter Dave Tarcy was happy to be back for a flying visit although having to push Graham McGeady’s car 5km down the Jagorawi toll road was not what he was expecting.

12 new players showed up which was way too many for our results spread sheet to display correctly. Matt Rosa, Ashley Souter, Jonathan Reid, Robert Hung, Syahrudin, Hector MacKay, Dennis Kloeth, Ronald Lim, Martin Duke, Peter Collier and Christian Engstron……we welcome you all to Tee Set.

Sadly, we have to say good-bye to Rune Tufta who will return to Norway where he will be playing other (snow based) sports on Sundays. Come back soon, Rune!

Santi Miller was to be seen sporting a red face, not from too much sun, but rather from making a rather rash promise in the heat of the game. From 170 yards out, in light rough, on a slope and under a tree, she foolishly made the offer to playing partner James Ross to “ kiss your bum if I make the green”, only to put it to within 4ft of the pin. What happened next??? Uumm, ask Santi, James is too much of a gentleman to tell you.

Results

Joseph Peries shot a great even par for the day to take low gross while playing partner Dave Baglivo shot 5 under his handicap to take low nett. Just shows what a few squirts of JD before tee off can do for the swing. Harry Hill took nearest to the pin and Matt Fairey a fine longest drive.

Full prize results were as follows:

Prize Winners

???????????????????????????????An excellent day for  the Tee Set treasurer with a rich haul of Skirt penalties including one for Peter Boyd who managed to pair it with Monster Putter and provide us with a photo opportunity we don’t get every week. Well done, Boydie, you took it like a man!

Many thanks to Dennis Kloeth for his generosity in donating some of his golfing products for the major winners.

Next Week

Next Sunday, February 10th, we are at Kedaton with an 11:30 tee time. Green fees with cart are Rp600,000 or rather less than that if you would like to walk the course. It is VERY IMPORTANT to remember to take the extreme left toll booth when exiting at KP31 on the Merak toll as we lose one or two every time we visit Kedaton. All other lanes will not allow you to access the overpass to Kedaton. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Many thanks to Wina for getting us on this lovely course.

Don’t forget to click on “Yes, I’m Playing” so we can track numbers expected to be playing.

Tee Set has history

Yep, nearly 30 years of it, and we just love to hear about it from the “old timers” out there. This week we got an e-mail from Stan Cooke in Aberdeen telling us how he instantly became known as a Sandbagger when joining Tee Set back in 1991 – and advises us that he is much younger than Steve Jacobs 🙂

Classifieds

Classifieds as a member service is now getting going as, in addition to the opportunity to buy Santi Miller’s city runabout at an outstanding price, you now also get a chance to buy some of Chazz Hassing’s sparkling red or a solid teak shoe and purse cabinet from Tom Alcedo or maybe even treat yourself to a lifetime membership at Genung Geulis from Michael Xiao!

All the best, Ric

(yes, still standing in for Geoff Thwaites)
