Pangkalan Jati, 30 December 2012

Next week: Palm Hill, 11:30, 06 Jan 2013

That was the LAST for the Old Year and we are ready for the FIRST of the New Year. She said!

No parkingOur previous home course, Pangkalan Jati was to put on a very friendly face with reasonable fairways and slow greens, not to mention the most favorable parking spot in front of the no parking sign. As if to apologise for its past poor performance, PJ was soooo good – with everyone finishing in 4 hours or less – and we were even allowed to drive the carts on the fairways 🙂

It was very encouraging to have so many players turn out just one day away from New Year. 17 made an enjoyable day without rain. Our PAWANG HUJAN is away. That must mean something or he can operate from afar! The 17 players included 6 welcome backs and, perhaps unsurprisingly, no new players.

Congratulations to Graham Stallworthy for taking low gross for the second week in a row – and cleverly averting the ire of others by coupling it with a skirt!!

Clyde Wickiser joined us again after a long stint in Balikpapan, however, this intrepid 70 year old hit such a great drive on the 8th he called it a day complaining of chest pains. He also saved the world from annihilation due to his birthday being on 21st September. A misinterpretation of the Myan calendar, maybe?

Jan Janda had a hard time making a birdie but after putting for one 4 times and missing – he finally made it on the fifth attempt. Good one Jan.

BeerDrinks left over from the Championship match somehow found their way to the Pangkalan Jati clubhouse and were eagerly consumed without noticeable consideration for the possible after effects.

Ivan Byriel once again made headlines with low net making him the only player since the Championship to win money every week. It was at this point your President threatened to take over the duties of Handicapper as a way of confirming that Tee Set is not a democracy.

Jesse Baker started a new category, not the cheap Toto but an expensive evening gown – for twice not making the ladies tee box on the same hole. Oh my!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players, committee members and course officials for making 2012 a great year for Tee Set. May you and your families enjoy a healthy and prosperous 2013.

PS. Don’t forget to let me know in advance if you intend to play next week at Palm Hill at 11:30. Last Sunday only 7 of the 17 players sent advice. This makes it very hard to deal with the Starter and get reasonable start times.

Matoa, 23 December 2012

Always check the Web Site for last minute changes

Xmas pudChristmas Party golf day was a great success with 21 players getting away to an early start on two tee boxes with carts permitted on the fairways. (a real plus).  Mike Garwood just made it to the 1st Tee Box as the last group were teeing off. He only lives just down the road but, in mitigation, he only got in from Iraq for Xmas break at midnight last night!

The course was in real good condition and, as could be expected, pretty quiet just before Xmas. The starter did a good job of getting us off early and a couple of caddies helped out with the Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin measuring with Chris Murchison shooting 230m on the fairway and Alan Park finishing only 3.9m from the pin to take the honours.

Mrs Syam Thwaites and friend Mourine, ably assisted by Matoa staff, prepared the Xmas plum pudding with hot custard and cold ice cream with a cherry on top. Together with the season’s music and red and Santa hats, the atmosphere was perfect for some very festive imbibing – and with seemingly no one in a rush to get away. Many thanks Syam.

Matoa provided us with a very favourable rate of Rp 422,000 plus Rp 90,000 for a cart.  A very decent, value for money course – and a fine choice as our home course for 2013 which means we will be back most months.

Tuti, in light brown eyes this time, again did a great job of administration.

RESULTS:

Scores were better than usual in general – perhaps as a results of all those pre-game tinctures having the desired effect – God Bless St Jack Daniel. Well done to Graham Stallworthy on a fine 80, and that after a slow start!

Honourable mention for a Mike Taylor passing through Jakarta from Australia and on his way home to the USA. Mike managed to take low putts with a magical 25, first birdie on hole #1 and most strokes on any hole with 12. Good to have you back, Mike!

Pondok Cabe, 16 December 2012

The day was dark and stormy but not a drop of rain

So Tee Set came out in numbers to play that game again.

Pondok Cabe with its fee so low

Attracted eight groups but play was not that slow.

Ric Wymer won low net four weeks in a row

So now his handicap will take a blow.

(4 strokes at least will calm that beast)

Jeffrey Leaver was not so slack shot 39 on the back

To win low gross and keep his game on track.

Ivan Byriel with handicap over 30 won first par 4 weeks in a row

Handicapper take note of Ivan the Terrible and strike him low.

The end of year is coming near, so we all just had another beer

To say farewell to those who will be with their families dear.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

When you get back we will have another beer. (And golf with a cheer)

Thanks to Santi Miller for arranging such a great deal at short notice, only Rp.300,000.- and to secretary Tuti with her eyes transforming from blue to light brown (aren’t soft lenses great) for her efficient administration processing.

No serious complaints registered even after close inquisition from the President. The starter got us away early to justify his tip and the club house staff looked after us efficiently bar one minor fault of running out of canned beer.  Lucky the big bottles were readily available. No doubt we’ll be back to this value for money course in the not to distant future.

Gading Raya, 09 December 2012

Always check www.teesetgolf.com for potential last minute changes (we are at the mercy of the course managers)

39 golfers registered at Gading Raya for what turned out to be a rain free day of golf on a near perfect course with greens and fairways as good as you’ll get anywhere in Jakarta.

Joseph Peries squeezed the management down to an unbeatable Rp 660k green fee  including carts. Many thanks once again to Joseph.

The course Starters and Marshals did a great job as they were fully booked in the morning’s session and again in the afternoon with Mr Lee’s 10 groups and Tee Set’s 10 groups but all got through the day without any major dramas with the Committee doing a sterling job in getting everyone registered, paired up and out onto the course close to our allocated tee time.

Unfortunately a few of our players had to leave prior to the award of prizes but ultimately the treasurer did not complain about this.

Recently retired ex President Ric found that 6 cans of beer really does help his game – finishing with an amazing 38 on the back nine after some very ordinary golf on the front. Wait for the screams of sand bagger from Gary Selby.

OTHER NEWS

Sadly we must say goodbye to Monica Slavin who is taking up a new assignment outside of Indonesia. Her introduction to Tee Set was just over a year ago when we were playing Big Sawangan. The sight of the Benders and friends breaking open bottles of JD before ending the breakfast of nasi goring may have been a little daunting to the new arrival but Monica took it all onboard and eventually went on to rack up a very impressive 24 games for the year. Monica has asked me to pass on her goodbyes to all her friends in Tee Set and hope to meet up again in the future.

Many of our flock will start the end of year holiday break this week so for those going away for Christmas, have a safe journey and we look forward to having you back safe and sound next year. For the others who are staying, I look forward to seeing you at Pondok Cabe this Sunday.

Karawang International, 02 December 2013

Karawang with its 27 holes located some 50 km from town put on a wonderful day – and with just a few minutes of rain!

The staff, greens, fairways and food were great.

I would rate this course highly for play during the any season.

Four groups arrived in time to tee off at the scheduled hour when Tuti once again did a magic job with the registration and management of the event.

Thanks for coming, cheers, Geoff

Tee Set 2012 Championship – Matoa, 25 November 2012

Dear All,

The location was Matoa National Golf club and the time was 6:50 am, 10 minutes before the shot gun start of the 2012 Tee Set Championship. The situation was chaotic as golfers searched around looking for their playing partners and which cart had their golf clubs. The drinks cooler boxes needed filling and the servers from Mad Dogs and Murphy’s Pub had no transport out to their respective drinks kiosks. Little wonder the author shot a triple bogey on the very first hole played. Well if it was going to be like this all day then bring it on. But hey, the next hole was only a bogey and the day started to get better.

Brian and Tuti in the drinks buggy caught up with our group and thus armed with a smoothie and a cold Anchor, index #1 hole was tamed. It continued to get better throughout the day up until 11:15 am when the heavens opened up and all sensible golfers made their way back to the club house to sit out the storm.

A few groups stayed out, however, and managed to finish their remaining two or three holes despite the flooded greens. Even the winner of the 2012 Match Play final was decided on a flooded green with Dave Baglivo prevailing over Mike Garwood on the last hole.

A great effort from Mike to even make the final since at 06:00 that morning he was still one hole down with one to play against Dean Kurt from the day before uncompleted match. To cut a long story short Mike marched through to the final after a sudden death putt off. By 11:50 we were back out to finish the round but the weather turned bad again to make the conditions very difficult.

From the 97 players that started, 91 managed to finish their rounds. What came next was round two of organized chaos, getting everyone changed, into Matoa’s upstairs function room, fed and suitably intoxicated while Tuti and the Tee Set committee attempted to work out who had won what.

The most important result to announce was Su Jones becoming Tee Set Champion for 2012 with the best nett result of 67. Congratulations to Su who also won the Rp1M meat voucher donated by Slaney’s Meats.

Other awards are listed below.

Full score sheet is attached in pdf together with the stats sheet compiled by our chief statistician, Keith Miller.

Thanks to Keith also for running the Match Play event during the year despite all the other demands on his time.

.

1. Tee Set Champion 2012 – Lowest nett – Su Jones (nett 67)
2. Runner up – Ric Wymer (nett 67)
3. A grade low gross – Joseph Peries 74
4. B grade low gross – Jesse Shaw 87
5. C grade low gross – John Suermondt 99
6. Lowest putts – Malcolm Liewellyn 25
7. 1st Birdie – Tim Davis (revised result)
8. 1st Sandy – Reka Romango and Oddvar Knardal
9. 1st par > 30 handicappers – Ivan Byriel and Shawn Millen
10. Longest drive Men – Kees De Korver (214m)
11. Longest drive Women – Cucu (177m)
12. Nearest to the Pin – Mark Rae (2m)
13. Money list winner for 2012 –  Geoff ‘burglar’ Thwaites
14. Match Play Champion 2012 – David Baglivo
15. Match Play runner up – Mike Garwood

Once all the trophies and lucky door prizes had been given out, the remaining task prior to sending everyone packing was to choose the new president for 2013. I use the word ‘choose’ rather then ‘elect’ because the first to put up his hand was ex-president Geoff Thwaites and nominations were closed immediately thereafter. Exactly 4 years ago the same ‘election’ process was used on the writer. Déjà vu working in reverse. Congratulations Geoff – you can count on plenty of support from the troops in the coming year. Geoff’s first task will be to get all the photos from the event onto the web page.

There are a number of people who contributed greatly to the success of this event and I’ll start by first mentioning Peter Reichlmeier who organized the trophies, Pin High shirts and Titleist caps, goodie bags, prizes, score sheets and gave advice when needed. Bob Fleischmann who provided his trailer B-B-Q and the hot links/hot dogs, buns that kept us from starving before lunch. Jack Calcote for getting us all fired up in the morning via Bloody Marys and throughout the day via his famous Smoothies. Octa did a great job getting all the goodie bags filled during registration and helping out with the trophy presentations. Brian Wilson and Den Rogers organized the ice boxes and drove the drinks carts throughout the day ably assisted by Tuti and Ulan from Star Deli.

We also had two girls from Murphy’s Pub and two from Mad Dogs to run the drinks kiosks on the course. Lis, Rahma, Dita, Lady, Baby and Lis’s dad all helped with organizing ice boxes, serving the drinks and general support. Tee Set secretary Tuti worked tirelessly making sure the registrations were correct and entering the scores into the results spread sheet.

Lastly but most importantly I’d like to thank the sponsors that made this event happen. They are as follows:

Gold Sponsors: Hot-Hed, PT International Paint Indonesia, Samson Tiara

Silver Sponsors: Quest Geophysical, PT Fugro Indonesia

Bronze Sponsors: Seascape Surveys, Peter Reichlmeier, Kojo, Star Deli

Those donating prizes or other support: Bob Fleischmann, Roland Fong, Murphy’s Irish Pub, Jack Calcote, Mad Dogs, Grand Slam Golf, Raymond Leong, Ivan Byriel, Dick Slaney, Stephane Mauger, Mike Garwood, Peter Reichlmeier, Brendan Green, Ed Bender Snr, Evaldo Roos, Ian Barr, Nick Grant, Anthony Sinclair, Mrs Sisi, Kristal Hotel, Risti and Now Jakarta. Ricky Cunningham gave a sample taste of his new hobby, raising Australian Yabbies in Indonesia. They were delicious, mate.

Pak Reza and his staff at Matoa National were fantastic in their support of our event and contributed greatly to its success. Recommend we book Matoa for next year’s event and to return on a regular basis throughout next year.

Tee Set’s 2013 season kicks off this Sunday December 2nd with a visit to a rarely played course, Karawang International. Tee off is 12:30PM but be early in case we can push the starter to get us off earlier. Take the Cikampek toll and exist just after Km 46. Travel time is about 55 minutes from Kemang. Car pooling available if required.

Don’t forget Yayasan HOGS 3rd annual Ibu Arti golf scramble on Saturday Dec 1, 2012 at the Sawangan golf course. Further details can be found via the attachment.

Finally I’d like to thank all those that supported Tee Set during my tenure as President. Especially to the committee loosely made up of Peter, Geoff, Keith, Santi, Graham and Octa. Has been a great ride and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the comradeship of the Jakarta golfing fraternity. It’s a great group and we can boast having in our membership many different nationalities and people from all walks of life. The common denominator is the love of chasing that silly white ball around the beautiful golf courses of Indonesia and having a good yarn together after the game.

Cheers and happy golfing,
Ric

PS Apologies if I’ve left something off this newsletter I should have mentioned – or forgotten to thank someone. It’s been a long day.

Jagorawi Old Course,18 November 2012

Dear All,

Fantastic day at Jagorawi last Sunday to finish off the Interleague year. Tee Set although wooden spooners for the match play comp came good during the Texas Scramble to take low nett overall with a stunning 51. Congratulations to Mel Meeds, Ivan Byriel, Richard Newcombe and Jackie Craig who salvaged some Tee Set pride. Longest drive for handicap B flight also won by Mel.

Many thanks to the Interleague committee of Kees, Matt, Anthony and Jack who made the competition throughout 2012 so enjoyable. Although Peter Rancamaya did a commendable job as Tee Set captain the rumor going around is that Dave Tarcy will return in 2013 to take over the captaincy and herald in a new phase of Tee Set competitiveness.

This Sunday 25th is the Tee Set Championship 2012 at Matoa National. Registration begins at 6 am and the shot gun start is 7 am. The low nett champion for 2012 will be decided together with the 2012 Match Play Champion. The rules for the event are attached so please open the file and read its contents.

We have a full complement signed up already however if there are still those out there interested to play then drop me a line and I’ll see what can be done. (bribery may help your cause) Green fees will be Rp600,000 for those with a minimum 5 games played with Tee Set for 2012 or Rp800,000 for those not meeting this criteria. Plenty of carts available for those who need one. Breakfast and lunch provided together with drinks around the course.

Many thanks to our sponsors who have supported Tee Set for this event.

Gold Sponsors: Hot-Hed, International Paint Indonesia, Samson Tiara

Silver Sponsors: Quest Geophysical, Fugro Indonesia

Bronze Sponsors: Seascape Surveys, Peter Reichlmeier, Kojo, Star Deli

Those donating prizes or other support: PT Petro Bangun, Engineering, Murphy’s Irish Pub, Asia Serve, Mad Dogs, Hotel Kristal, Anthony Sinclair, Now Jakarta, Evaldo Roos, Cobra, Raymond Leong, Ivan Byriel, Dick Slaney, Stephane Mauger and Brendan Green

Guarantee a fun day so see you all Sunday,
