Remembrance Day Round – JABABEKA – 11 November 2012

Dear All,

Remembrance Day last Sunday. (11/11) Respect for our fallen heroes grows stronger with time. Lest we forget.

I do apologize for not including in last weeks newsletter a map and key words of advice for finding Jababeka. But after all, if Ivan Byriel can manage to find the course, I’m sure anybody can. Navigating your way out at night after a few beers however is another matter unless you’re smart enough to tailgate the writer’s car out to the Jakarta toll road as David Baglivo did. Congratulations to David who moves into the Tee Set Match Play final on the 25th November after a hard fought tussle with Grumpy Pirate Graham McGeady that went down to the wire and was only decided on the practice green after an all-square result.

Left standing in the way of David’s march to the cup is either Mike Garwood or Dean Kirt who will play their semi final match on the 17th. Jababeka turned out to be a good choice to play last Sunday since all 7 groups completed their rounds before dark and the day was dry except for a 10 minute rain interruption mid-way through the round. The Star Deli tournament was not so lucky at Matoa since they were rained off after only 9 holes. More time in the club house drinking beer was their only consolation.

A number of newcomers joined the Tee Set group so we welcome Terry Lavigne, Kieran Walshe, Ken Runyon, James Young, Paul Preston and Greg Garrett. In addition we had 9 welcome back players including our current Tee Set Champion Mustafa Baabad who is honing his skills ahead of defending his title on the 25th. Managed to take low nett on the day which shows he’s on track to be the first ever back to back Championship winner. New comer Paul Preston took low gross attributed mostly to his superior knowledge of the course since he is a Jababeka member.

For the remaining awards please open the attached PDF file. The ladies get a distinct advantage on this course with their tee boxes being on some holes over 100m in front of the blues. A couple of us struggled to get past the red tee boxes and their photos are attached. Mark J was less thrilled with wearing the tutu and managed to get his identifying features out of the photo. However Evaldo after achieving two skirts was less conservative and actually looks like he enjoys wearing the tutu. Many thanks to Wina who organized the tee time and to the Jababeka starter who managed the grouping organization very well despite the usual overbooking of flights.

This Sunday 18th we are at Jagorawi for the season final Interleague Texas Scramble. Tee off is 09:30 as usual and we are looking for at least 5 or 6 teams to enter the event. Tee Set may have ended up with the wooden spoon in the Interleague comp but we remain the most enthusiastic golfing society. There is a B-B-Q after the game and probably a keg or two of beer. Let me know who will attend so I can advise Kees on the numbers for catering purposes.

Only two weeks to go to our club Championship at Matoa on the 25th. If you haven’t registered but want to play please drop me a line to confirm your place. There is a cut off for how many we can accommodate so get your names in now to avoid any disappointment. Guarantee the day will be huge!!!

See ya Sunday.

Regards,

Ric

Padang Golf Modern, 22nd January 2012

Padang Golf Modern

Guru Bahasa Indonesia semua ……

Those who wasted (?) significant time on Sunday on the 10th hole drinking Bintang and chatting up the caddies improving their Bahasa will see from this trip down memory lane to January 2012 that slotting in golfers at the 10th hole is a time humoured trick of the PGM starter – and right from Tee Set’s very first round there as you will read.

Good to be brought back memories of Jim “Fog Horn” Noller, a man who was never more worthy of his nickname 🙂

The sharper eyed might also notice that it is a Tuesday and the following Sunday’s venue is still something of an issue. Golden days …..

Dear All,

The rainy season continues to keep the Bogor mountain courses off limits so consultation with the rain gurus are needed to select alternatives.

Last Sunday was the first time for the group to try out the Padang Golf Modern track in Tangerang but after the round all the criteria boxes for a return visit were ticked by our chief fun day appraiser, Geoff Thwaites. If there was a down side it would have to be the starter slotting in groups ahead of Tee Set as we made the turn but this is an inherent trait of most courses in Indonesia and will not be overcome unless we have a 5 star general or bold movie star playing in our group. James Noller (now known as fog horn Jim) berated the starter for his lack of golf etiquette which was good for entertainment value but had zero effect of getting rid of the two groups of VIP Asians rudely placed in front of our groups at the turn.

Estimated traffic congestion is a consideration that cannot be overlooked when choosing a course but with the Chinese New Year holiday looming the day after it was rightly adjudged that traffic would be light. For those not getting lost on the way or getting run down by a TransJakarta bus while trying to enter the toll road, only fifty minutes were required from Kemang Dalam to the course car park.

Thank god that so many courses around Jakarta are reachable within one hours on a Sunday. Twenty players registered to play and only a hand full of them had ever played the course before.

Keith Miller showed up without his clubs on the pretext of forgoing the game to instead run secretary Liza through his new sexy scoring software. Lovely piece of data manipulation and as a result proof of our weekly golf failings will be recorded and there for all to see for ever and ever. Makes life easier for me because now just have to attach the pdf of the results to the newsletter.

I’m happy to report that Liza has managed to find a decent camera so the monster putter mug shot is posted here for all to see. Robin is trying hard to kick the smoking habit but is finding it tough.

Ladies tees were pretty close to the blue tee boxes so no skirts last Sunday. Liza was most unhappy since it means less money in the bank for her end of year jaunt to Bali.

No new players this week but a bunch of returnees that included Marni and Cameron Fisher, Robin Martin, Bob Fleischmann, Peter Carver, Craig Binks, Cathy Brownell, Jeff Leaver and Stefan Merchant. The final incident to report was three freshly showered orang bule seen in the car park pushing a Panther diesel in the hope of clutch starting the beast. Certainly good entertainment value for the locals.

Still looking around for the venue for next Sunday. Watch this space or check out http://www.teesetgolf.com later in the week.

Cheers,
Ric

Kedaton, Sunday 5th June 2011

A piece of history as Mrs Pie came across this e-mail Newsletter by the Vice-President of Almost Everything from 2011 – interesting to see so many familiar names, a familiar gripe over Kedaton beer pricing and indeed how few words (and no graphics or photos) it took in those days to get over the essence!!!

Dear All,

Final attempt to get a quick write up out before the end of the week.

Wina as a Kedaton club member managed to get us a good rate although sadly failed to get a members discount on the richly overpriced beer. Suggest bringing our own next time.

I understand Wina has been a club member for 10 years and has never once 4 putted……until last Sunday! That’s a fabulous record Wina and a shame you had to blow it playing Tee Set. Nevertheless it fired her up for the rest of the round enabling her to take low nett with a 70.

Santi Miller also played inspired golf and took out low gross despite dumping her second shot into the water on the very last hole. Her final putt was from 20’ and she nailed it.

Welcome to new player Jeff Leaver from South Africa. Welcome back players were Jesse Baker, Jean and Martin Zachary, Peter Carver, Craig Binks, Peter Wallace, Chipper, Sandy and Wally Walters.

Sandy has developed a copybook swing of late but just needs a rocket assisted ball to get her more distance.

Overall everyone enjoyed the day and was thankful of not having to take on the Jagorawi toll traffic on the way home. The quick drive (1 hour) back to Kemang Star Deli completed an excellent day.

Results as follows:

Low Gross with 88 by Santi Miller

Low Nett with 70 by Wina

Low Putts with 29 by James Ross

1st birdie on #2 by Rob Chugg

1st Sandy on #11 by Geoff Thwaites

1st par >30 went to Sandy Walters on #16

Most Improved with 10 strokes by Alex Holl

Monster Putter with 45 by JK Foster

Most Strokes on a hole also went to JK for picking up. That’s a certain way to win this penalty.

Only one skirt and this was from G.W.Hall

Next Sunday June 12th 2011 we are at Jagorawi Country Club for the next round of Interleague Match Play. Tee Set will tee off straight after the match players are away. Hope to see you all there.

Regards,

Ric

Tee Set Chamionship, 12th December 2010

A walk down memory lane to the Tee Set’s e-mail newsletter days of fond memory penned, rather inevitably, by the Immediate Past President of Almost Everything.

Dear All,

I think almost everyone went home last Sunday with a smile on their face. If not it must have been due to an underserved penalty as a result of the monster putter, skirt or most stokes on any hole incident.

Thanks to all for their support on this event especially the sponsors. Helping out on the day with the registrations and other duties were Lis, Ovie, Hina, Siska, and secretary Liza. Riding the drinks cart were Ita, Febi, Tatar (Star Deli) and Rosie (Maxi Bar) while Dave Edwards and Brian Wilson did a great job of driving the carts. The Bloody Marys mixed by Jamal were so good we went through 4 bottles of Vodka in about an hour. Thank god we had Jack Calcote’s smoothies to fall back on while we sent out the SOS for more Vodka.

Thanks also to Graham McGeady for donating some door prizes on behalf of Thiess, as did Edwin Palmer from Jagorawi Golf Club, Nick Grant PGA pro and Claudia from Medic One. Clyde Wickiser donated a beautiful wine rack which I believe was auctioned off and is now winging its way to the Zachary residence in the States.

The ultimate objective of the day was to award the Des Murray Perpetual Trophy to the lowest net score. A total of 73 golfers turned out to do battle for this title and in the process put away as many Bloody Mary’s, smoothies and beer as time allowed.

The weather was cool and the course in really fine nick so there were no excuses for not shooting low scores. At the end of it all two net scores were tied on 68 but on using a count back for the lowest 9 holes played, Bill Sayers was adjudicated the overall winner and JW Hall the runner-up. Mike Garwood blew the course away with the best gross score of 77 but just missed out on the top prize because of his impressive single digit h/c. Congratulations to Bill Sayers the 2010 Tee Set Champion. I hope Geoff has a decent picture of you to put on the web page because it will stay there for all to see for the next twelve months.

Last Sunday was focused on finding the new Tee Set Champion however by coincidence rather than planning the Tee Set Match Play Champion was also decided on the day and what a match it turned out to be. Anthony King up by two holes for most of the day was pushed aside on the last 4 holes to go down to a strong finishing Peter Reichlmeier 1 up. Fantastic effort from Peter considering the amount of organizing he was involved in for the days events but just highlights his multi tasking abilities. Can smoke, drink and hit golf balls almost in the same movement. Thanks to Dave Tarcy for organizing this competition and keeping it ticking over during the year.

A lot of back slapping and pocket pissing occurred during the presentations so rather than go over ground already covered on Sunday here is a quick summary of results.

Bill Sayers low nett with a 68

GW Hall runner up on the same score (second on a count back)

Andy Hartsteen shot a net 66 to win lowest net for a non regular Tee Setter

Mike Garwood took low gross A grade with 77

Peter Reichlmeier took low gross B grade with 90

Ed Bender Jnr took low grass C grade with 103

Longest drive men went to Narash Lala with a massive 278m (wind assisted?)

Longest drive women to Santi Miller with 182m

Closest to the pin was Mike Garwood with 15cm (nearly a hole-in-one)

1st Birdie went to Dave Tarcy on hole #1 (hard to beat)

1st sandy on hole #3 shared by Rasmus Kilde and Yan Stanberg

1st par h/c > 30 went to recently married Alan Fenwick (mind in honeymoon mode)

Lowest putts went to Mal Robbins with an incredibly low 26.

Wouldn’t be Tee Set if we didn’t complete the loop by mentioning the underachievers. Tim Supple with monster putter (41), Alex Holl with most stokes on a hole (13) and skirts to A graders Matt Harter, Bob Shearer, Bob McLeod, Keith Miller and Dave Mills.

On the skirt front in B grade we had Bob Davis and Jurgen Degert while in C grade where you would expect the most we actually had the least with just Ed Bender Jnr and Alex Holl qualifying for the cross dressing walk of shame.

Sentul Highlands, Sunday 23rd May 2010

The Vice-President of Almost Everything has been sticking to the task of recovering Tee Set history like a bulldog and has unearthed a veritable treasure trove in the Thwaites family archives, or the Kojo server as it is also known. Many thanks to Sam Thwaites for doing the digging.

If Ric can ever find the key to Jack Calcote’s garage then the Web Guy will be up to his eyes in it.

We will publish all of them over time but here is one to whet your appetite from 2010 – a report from which it is clear that Alan Fenwick had a mixed day – and that Tee Set had yet to discover the enormous advantages that a Pawang Hujan can bring to golfing life here in Indonesia.

Sentul Highlands Golf ClubDear All,

Unfortunately the unseasonal weather brought us unstuck for the second week in a row. This time Tee Set was rained off the lovely Sentul Highlands course, or more appropriately …’fire hosed’ off the course. Some groups almost finished but the last completed hole for all groups was lucky 13 so the Modified Dictator Adjustment method was used to calculate the winners.

Low Gross to Mal Robbins
(despite a great round he could not shake of the tenacious Chipper who stuck with him during their match play round. The game to be replayed since Mal couldn’t finish him off before the rain)
Low Nett to Ric Wymer
(no doubt there will be some murmurs about match fixing but all handicaps were adjusted equally using the factor 0.72222 approved by the match secretary. I wonder who pays her salary?)
Low Putts to Chipper
(explains why he was able to stay in touch with Mal during their match play)
1st Birdie on #4 to Steve Wood
1st Sandy to Simon Seymour on #7
1st Par over 30 to Alan Fenwick. Shut the door on this one on hole #1

++++And then we go to the fines++++
Monster putter went to Alan Fenwick

Most strokes of 10 shared by Alan Fenwick, Shawn Berg and Weis.

No skirts reported. Probably because we played off the whites.

Welcome to new players Brenda (survived the hang over) and Jack Simon who had to swim back to the club house but luckily has some prior experience with swimming. Alan Corbett one of the last to leave the bar for home which is a sign of a true Tee Setter.

Welcome Back to Juergen Degert and his never rusty irons. Also to Derick King doing some talent scouting for the Sentul Swingers. Been a while since we’ve seen Jessie Baker playing both days of the weekend.

Next week being the last Sunday of the month we are at Pangkalan Jati with tee time 10:30AM. See ya there.

Regards, Ric

Tee Set Championship, Sunday 6th December 2009

DCF 1.0

Blackwell’s Bane

Another piece of history, this one the 2009 Championship held at Jagorawi, including the 9 hole Z course, to decide the first winner of the Des Murray Perpetual Trophy.

They clearly had handicaps sorted in those days with a mere net 73 being the winning score from Ian Barr and with 3 Tee Setters tied for the runner up spot.

Interestingly skirts etc. were not mentioned in the report, however, the VP of Almost Everything distinctly remembers one Geoff Blackwell shooting 22 on one of the Z course holes at the event, a quite stunning total and one that has yet to be surpassed.

Dear All.

Sunday 6th December saw our last high-profile event played for 2009, the Tee Set Championship. Of the 72 players registered for the event we ended up with 67 starters and 65 finishers. Mel Meeds and John Suermondt disappeared for an early shower after succumbing to the gruelling conditions. Nevertheless it was probably the best turn out ever for a Championship event.

A one-off opportunity to secure a quality Pin High golf shirt embossed with the TS logo and other goodies on offer for participating players no doubt helped to build the numbers. The goodie bag, trophies, wine, lucky draw prizes, smooothies, Bloody Marys, beer and other cold drinks, breakfast, lunch and other give aways were all made possible due to the contributions from our sponsors who were as follows:

Geoff Thwaites of Kojo, OB of Control Risks, Peter Reichlmeier of Seascape Surveys, Ric Wymer of Fugro, Mark Aitken of Hotel Kristal, Jack Calcote of Asiaserv, Anthony Sinclair and Paul Cross of Sinar Nirwana Distriusi, Peter Wallace of JIB FP. Edwin Palmer of Jagorawi Country Club made the course available to us on a Sunday at an affordable rate.

Thanks to the girls of Star Deli and The Bar (Rosie and her sister, Tata, Rindi, Ita) that came down to help out with the registration and on the course keeping everyone lubricated with smoothies. Also thanks to Jamal, Lis, Tammy who helped out on the day and to Peter Reichlmeier who did the majority of the chasing and running around getting sponsors, trophies, caterers, post scoring and fixing the handicaps.

Since this was the Tee Set Championship event the main trophy for lowest net result could only be won by a Tee Set regular. Nevertheless all other categories were up for grabs and competition was fierce as seen in the attached results sheet. In summary winners were:

Lowest Net and inaugural holder of the “Des Murray Perpetual Trophy”

73                     Ian Barr                                  Champion 2009

75                     Peter Reichlmeier                    Runner up

Also on 75 but lost on a count back…. Wina N, John Durham

Lowest Gross A

79                     Simon Seymour                     Winner

84                     Stephan Hadiutomo              Runner up

Lowest Gross B

94                     Penny Wen                             Winner

97                     Peter Reichlmeier                  Runner up

Lowest Gross C

97                     Shane Stevenson                   Winner

Lowest Putts

28                     Jean Zachary                          Winner

Chipper Barwick, John Durham, Siska Selby lost on a count back.

1st birdie   #3                           Simon Seymour

1st Sandy   #2                           Mark Hupka

1st Par>30                                 OB

Longest Drive (men)             Kenny Black  –  240 metres

Longest drive (women)        Wina Nugraha –  190 metres

Nearest Pin (men)                  Bob Shearer

Nearest Pin (Women)            Siska Selby

All in all it was a great day and worthy of a Championship event. Can’t wait for next year.

Next week Tee Set will be at Pangkalan Jati to support Lynleigh Evens in her quest to break 90 before her return to Sydney at the end of the month. Lynleigh has been a keen participant of Tee Set over the last couple of years and we won’t let her go without a booze party. A B-B-Q lunch has been organized after Sunday’s game but you have to come and join Lynleigh to find out where it will be.

So come on down this Sunday to PJ for the 08:00 tee time. Unfortunately the course is closed to the public after 12PM so we have to take this early tee time.

Regards, Ric

Rainbow Hills, Sunday 24th February 2008

Another blast from the past, from a time before spell checking was invented apparently, and the very oldest newsletter on the Vice President of Nearly Everything’s server, this one from February 2008 with former President Dave Tarcy on the quill. Rather intriguingly it records the genesis of the dreaded skirt award – with the first recipients being one Graham Stewart and another former president, Peter Reichlmeier. Well done guys!!

Interesting to note that Ivan was causing problems back then too 🙂

Startling to note also that the start time for Rainbow Hills was 8:30 – none of that sort of nonsense these days of course as we guarantee a bit of a lie in on a Sunday morning for the most obvious of reasons. I

Possibilities are two fold of course, they were tougher in the old days – or we party more now!

Subject: Teeset at bukit pelangi

24 Feb. was another great day for Tee Set. 16 players played but only 15 finished. Jose ( George) retired hurt after 9.

Welcome new members: Mal Robbins, Eric Welbourne

Welcome backs: Iven Byriel (he led us astray- he said he was going away- he didn’t)

Thanks to Jean Zachary for providing us with a dress for the boys who could not hit past the Ladies Red tee. This was the first week we tried this out and we had two intiates Graham Stewart and Peter Reichlmeier.

The rules for this are simple; If you fail to make the ladies tee box then you ware the skirt from that hole to the end of the round. Have your photo taken in full robe and give the dress back to the person in-charge.  Just to make it fair we will have one for each group.   See the results and photos at www.teesetgolf.com

Don’t forget to register for the long weekend away to Bandung. Sat. March 8 and Sunday March 9 at Girih Grahana.  Contact Geoff@kojo.co.id to register.

This week it’s back to Bukit Pelangi, Rainbow Hills.  Registration required so contact Geoff for that as well

This week: Rainbow Hills.  8:30 AM. Registration required

Riverside, Sunday October 1st 2006

Another in our occasional series from Down Memory Lane, this one from nearly ten years ago when you will see a reference to Tee Set’s first ever Interleague win that same year -and indeed to the dangers of entrusting anything to a sojourn in Jack Calcote’s garage, a garage possessing qualities equalled only by that of Dr. Who’s Tardis 😦

520,000 for the Riverside round seems something of a bargain, but taking into account the exchange rate against the currency you think in, today’s rates are actually much cheaper.

If you are confused about the many courses being referred to and where and when and who was playing where that day, then join the queue. Ric who wrote it of course – and doubtless he will be able to shed light!

RiversideThis week was the Interleague scramble and still 10 Tee Setters managed to play a round.

The Tee Set received a special Ramadan rate from Riverside and had a nice turnout. 27 players showed up.

The following were results of the competition:

Low Net Uning Thompson with a 66 – There needs to be an adjustment here

Low Gross Mal Robbing with an 92

Low Putts Peter Hatton with 32 putts, actually Uning had the low putts but claimed the low net instead..

1st Birdie John Thompson hole # 11 – looks like they’re keeping the awards in the family.

1st Sandy None.

1st Par over 30 Hdcp – I think Rod Mercx made it but it wasn’t recorded anywhere.

Last but not least – MONSTER PUTTER – Philip Constable with a 40…seems like the somewhere, I think greens weren’t that smooth.

During the scramble, the Tee Setters had to settle for second low net due to a hole in one by the cloggies and we lost this on the countback. Incidentally, the Tee Setters collected the Interleague Trophy once again…it seems it has been at Jack Calcote’s place for at least 2 or 3 years so I guess it didn’t have to move very far. Congrat’s to fellow T-Setters!!!

The next outing will be this Sunday, October 8 and we’re trying to get Riverside for the same price for the Ramadhan Special of Rp. 520,000.

Another thing was that none of the Tee Set winners this week were remaining after the dinner upstairs at Pangkalan Jati, so the only real winners were the PJ Starters and they got Rp 150,000 split between the three of them.

Regards, Ric
