NEXT WEEK: GAME # 2041 2 GADING RAYA

HIGHLIGHTS:

Cenkareng giveth and Cengkareng taketh away. On the plus side a beautiful golfing day with the course in super shape despite the recent downpours. On the minus side the overbooked morning and/or general snail’s pace of play left many Tee Setters frustrated with some finishing in the dark. However, there was a variety of sparkling shots worth noting:
Bobby Cangkrama birdied the first two holes the second of which when he sailed a chip into the jungle only to see it hit the pin and drop straight in.
Sami ‘Bryson’ Kekonen used his trusty driver/wedge combo to reach a par5 but missed the eagle putt.
Sally Deane, eyeing the setting sun, decided to hurry things up by stroking in a 16m putt. Center cut!
Mark Johnson pulled out some of his short-game magic with a sandy par using his putter from the bunker.
Bobby C. wasn’t finished .. on 18 he played a four (4!) skip water shot and converted the birdie. The legend grows.

Mike/Jeff over John/Sarah 2&1
JP/Patrick 3&1
Arnold/Nick A/S

HIGHLIGHTS:

Super day for golf at Riverside. High overcast, no rain. A bit slow for reasons unknown but all’s well that ends well.
Some outstanding performances and spectacular shot-making.
Sami pulled a John Daly: drive/wedge/eagle.
Axel (75) was awesome for the opposition and Adrian (77) almost as good. Both had best-evers and won their JIL matches. The Axel/Shawn/Adrian/Dougy fourball recorded 8 birdies.
Patrick and JP hit their opponents with the old right/left combination and triumphed 3&1.
The US of A (Mike and Jeff) bolstered the American presence in SE Asia with a 2&1 win.
Nick and Arnold kept the DOGS at bay and finished all-square.
Tee Set came out ahead against DOGS by a 7-3 count. A big thank you to those who threw their hats in the ring and helped notch an impressive ‘W’.

WORLD CUP 2022

At this early stage everything looks like another great event. I don’t see an Australian 🇦🇺team registered. There must be a couple of Ozies out there that can be competitive. If you haven’t done so please enter your team now.

NEXT WEEK: game 2041 Monthly Medal @ Cengkareng.

Thank you all for your great effort to bring Tee Set back to life.

Also a big thank you the George and the committee and of course Ms Adhe for their devotion to the administration of our events. 🙏🏻

I look forward to seeing you in mid June.

TEE SET MATCH PLAY 2022

Kayla Graham 2 up over Tom Grace.
Cucu Chandra and Velma Yolanda tied. To be replayed.
Michael Seabrook and Diana Budiarti rained out. To be replayed.

HIGHLIGHTS:

With a huge development in progress all around it Kedaton continues to see improvements in grooming, greens, and fairway conditions. Tee Set arrived with a great 50+ contingent, broad nationality support, terrific turnout by the ladies, and several MP’s on tap.
The skies opened up after 6 to 8 holes for most players but we sat it out and continued post deluge on the surprisingly playable course. The second downpour ended the round for some groups but others soldiered on and finished in the gloaming.
MP results had Velma and Cucu all-square through 18; Michael and Diana rained out; Kayla 2-up over Tom including a short-putt birdie on Index 1 hole to end the round in style.

Afters @ TELAGA

After the rain soaked round Tee Setters joined the Wolfpack for a superb seafood dinner at Telaga Resto just minutes from Kedaton. Live band, great food variety, lively repartee – a super follow-up to golf.
But wait, there’s more! Most of the crowd caravanned over to Rav’s lair and partied on. With Jeremy tending bar, Roger holding forth on topics of the day and the ladies wearing out the indoor putting mat, winding down lasted into the wee hours.

Another great Tee Set event at Cengkareng! The course was in perfect condition, the weather hot and muggy, and the golfers in good spirits. Thanks to all for joining and your participation. Cucu led prize giving proceedings in commemoration of Kartini Day (21 April – woman’s emancipation day) and demonstrated her successful business executive skills.

Solid performances by the winners all round.

Special note about a very rare shot: Nick Goodwin drove the green on #3 PAR 4 😇 💪

Rancamaya Trilogy, World Cup of Tee Set and Monthly Medal

Rancamaya week-end and Match versus D.O.G.S.

The ever popular weekend away at Rancamaya for our annual match versus D.O.G.S. took on a new flavour this year with JAWS joining in the fun to create a long weekend of golf and to support the collective fund raising efforts for our chosen charity, The Fiona Unity Foundation. Around 65 different players participated at some point in the weekend with 130 rounds being played over the 3 days and 50 players and partners joining for a lively BBQ event on Saturday night.

JAWS’s regular Friday event kicked off the week-end and although the weather was less than kind, a steady drizzle falling through out the afternoon, we were all able to warm up again at the charity whisky tasting event in the evening. Details of the day are already posted in JAWS and can be found here: https://jawsgolfsociety.com/2022/04/25/jaws-rancamaya-22-04-22/

Saturday was the second part of our charity activities with 24 teams entered for the 2-player scramble event. Some great scores were returned and more importantly, an excellent evening BBQ and prize-giving rolled deep into the night. Congratulations to all our winners:

Low Gross: Simon Reynolds/Booby Cangkrama with a Gross 66 pipping Willi Noronha/Srinivas Murthy who returned a Gross 69

Low Net: A two way tie on 61.45 saw first place shared between David Baglivo/Dan Swinburne and Gaurav Shirke/Chris Lever – with all the prizes being the same we didn’t bother with a countback – and in 3rd place were Alex MacGregor/Mark Johnson on 62.2.

The real winner was the charity with Rp24.7j being raised between Friday and Saturday and this will be presented to Fiona at her upcoming golf event on behalf of JAWS, D.O.G.S. and Tee Set players. A big thank you to all our sponsors and organisers, including the representatives from the committees of the 3 societies, KOJO, Anker Beer, Meadow and Bone and our prize and raffle sponsors Cengkareng, Rancamaya, Jakarta Golf Club, John Brown, Roger Finnie, Willi Goldschmidt, Holger Molendyk and Jeremy Oberoi.

A few sore heads arrived Sunday morning to be greeted by the cheery faces of those joining just for Sunday as we gathered for the annual Tee Set versus D.O.G.S. match in honour of Juergen Degert, the instigator of the event. With 22 players on each side being evenly matched, there were many titanic games played with D.O.G.S. just edging out Tee Set 5 to 3 with 3 games halved…. just as well as D.O.G.S. forgot to bring the trophy!! The Sunday regular game was combined with the DOGS final round eclectic and the report on the day can be found on their website: https://www.djakartaoldgolfsociety.com/blog

World Cup of Tee Set

Due to some scheduling clashes, namely the travel plans of the key organisers, the event is being rescheduled from its published date of 5th June to 3rd July – still at Riverside. Last year we had 91 players across 23 teams and we hope to surpass this number for 2022’s event. Event leaders Cucu Chandra and President Geoff Thwaites are looking for captains to lead their countries into golfing battle – teams of 4 with best 3 scores per hole counting to the team score. Please answer the call if they tap you on the shoulder or better still, contact either of them and let them know your team… thank you Indar for being the first in for 2022 with Team Malaysia….

Sunday 1st May 2022: Monthly Medal at Cengkareng

Moved back a week from it’s normal last Sunday of the month slot to accommodate the Rancamaya event, this Sunday we head for Cengkareng for our April Monthly Medal. As always a fun day out and our usual prizes are on offer… please sign up on mygolf2u as usual so we can advise the course on numbers and flights. With most of us being on holiday, I’m sure there will be a few margarita’s to be consumed afterwards as the sun descends on another week-end.

Sunday 17th April 2022 at Cengkareng Golf Club

Our planned Easter scramble fell victim to no less than 13 call offs in the 24 hours before our scheduled game and so with 19 players making it to the first tee box, 2 involved in a matchplay, we decided to switch the format to our regular stableford game. A wonderful sunny day and hard, fast fairways greeted us and with all the arrangements going smoothly we were all round in quick time, showered and finished well before 5.30pm; leaving many who chose to stay to enjoy some refreshments over dinner as the sun went down.

In the matchplay, Simon Reynolds continued his fine form of the week-end to shoot gross 75 which got him over the line winning 4&3 over Hitoshi Maruyama and also to secure Low Gross on the day. Excellent rounds from Simon Oxley and Juju Juhaeriah scoring 40 and 42 points, respectively, and securing our runner-up spots. Both were pipped by Jane Finnie who put aside the disappointment of the monthly medal round being abandoned a couple of weeks ago to shoot another impressive round, earning her 44 points and the winners spot for the week. All scores on mygolf2u.

Next Up: Rancamaya

Tee Set, D.O.G.S. and JAWS Weekend 22-24th April

We need to finalise arrangements for the BBQ and with the course for both days – please sign up as soon as possible to confirm you are playing and on which days… details as previously posted below:

Next week-end, 22nd, 23rd and 24th April the 3 Societies are combining activities to make for a great week-end at Rancamaya, building on the excellent camaraderie and competition which has been built up over several years as Tee Set and D.O.G.S. play off on Sunday for the Juergen Degert Trophy.

The weekend begins Friday afternoon, approximately 12pm tee off with the regular JAWS game and please sign up to JAWS on mygolf2u to register. After the round and in the clubhouse, there will be the usual prize giving and refreshments post round together with an opportunity to taste a variety of whiskies, rums, gin and other spirits.. all for a very modest donation to the charity pot for the week-end which is going like last year to the Fiona Unity Foundation.

Saturday is the main charity day and the competition format will be 2-person scramble with men playing from the white tees; Tee off around 12pm shot gun start. Your competition fee of Rp200k will be going to the charity and will get you a super mulligan (1 drive/1 fairway/1 putt) and 3 raffle tickets for the lucky draw to be held at the BBQ after the game. Additional mulligans, Rp50k each or Rp100k with 3 more raffle tickets are available for players to buy and raffle tickets will be on sale by themselves for players and non-players alike. Please sign up for the scramble on mygolf2u (Charity scramble under D.O.G.S. for 23rd April) and please advise Roger Finnie (08113891350) on your scramble partner so we can prepare the pairings accordingly.

Saturday evening is the traditional BBQ, Rp350k a head and partners and spouses welcome. We have some generous sponsorship from Anker Beer, Kojo and others which will supplement the BBQ fare and oil the evening. As always you are welcome to bring a special bottle or 2 as well. Start time around 6.30pm and we will do the prize giving and raffle draw during the evening – wine, whisky, green fee vouchers and several other prizes have been generously donated for the lucky draw and all proceeds of the day will go to the charity pot. Please let Roger Finnie (08113891350) know that you are coming to the bbq and if you are bringing a non-golfer along with you so we can cater for the correct numbers.

Sunday is the regular D.O.G.S. day with the big dog on the line so Tee Set is joining the day to keep prize giving simple at the end – all registrations and pairings will be managed by Rod Williams and please register in mygolf2u. Tee off at 12pm shot gun start. To help those suffering from the night before, Meadow and Bone are organising a breakfast roll and tasting at hole 4 and other thanks and appreciation to them for the support. In parallel to the normal round, Tee Set Captain Tom Grace will be looking for 24 sharp shooters to take on the best that Doug McQuater can muster from the D.O.G.S. contingent there on the day as they battle for bragging rights for another year and the Juergen Degert Trophy. Please let Tom know if you are keen, willing and available. Golf on Saturday and Sunday is Rp950k a round.

Lastly, please look on the DOGS website for arrangements for the R Hotel if you want to book a room for one of the evenings or even the full week-end. Knowing that several players prefer to make their own arrangements we are leaving it up to players to contact the hotel, other another establishment of their choosing, directly.

Don’t Miss out on all the Fun

Sunday 17th April at Cengkareng Golf Club

With the Easter weekend upon us, and several players taking advantage of the holiday week-end to get some extra rounds in, we decided to make Sunday a 2-person scramble event with partners being blind drawn before the round. Sign up to enjoy all the fun on mygolf2u… even if you don’t want to join the organised game – completing match play for instance – still sign and just let Roger Finnie know ahead of time so as to arrange a suitable pairing.

PHOTO GALLERY:

Winner Geoff Thwaites with 41 points and 84 off the stick, Holger Molendyk second with 38 points followed by Richard Mau with 36 points. Not a bad effort considering it rained all day.

Low gross went to Roger Finnie on a count back from Simon Reynolds both with 82 strokes. The Bogor Raya Golf Club put on free beer and snacks for everyone “thank you” 🙏🏻

ANKER MATCH PLAY 2022:

There were two match play games played today with the following results;

Roger over Diarmuid 4&3.

Craig and Cucu all-square over 18 holes after a rain soaked see-saw battle. Darkness prevented any tie-breaking holes.

Mark Johnson over Reysia Moore 1up. played Saturday Rancamaya

The graphic update will follow.

HIGHLIGHTS:😃😃

Perseverance paid off for players who waited out the Bogor inclement interlude. Finishes were in fading, but nevertheless playable, light.

Richard Mau’s sandals were stolen but after shooting 77 he said the sacrifice was worth it.

With the President’s gross only 6 strokes off his age, Tee Set is considering adding a new statistic to myGolf2u. As a reference a couple of other golfers in their 8th decade managed 24 and 27 off their ages.

I want to thank Bogor Raya and in particular Ms Cindy for their great organisation and tolerance in getting us away on a 4 hole mini shotgun start. It is not the fault of BR that it rained in the dry season but they were very graceful in providing everyone with free beer and snacks as a compensation as well as cash back and vouchers for some of those that finished before 9 holes.

LOWLIGHTS: 😡

Unfortunately there were two incidents that gave Tee Set a bad image.

The first was a poor choice of words in claiming a rain check. Even if you are correct you should always remain respectful. In this case only a few minutes was needed to resolved in our members favour, if he had waited.

The second was an incident at the marshalling area where our perennial winger made unnecessary comments about the Flights and Tee Boxes. The committee are there to help and we don’t need to hear grizzling at every encounter. Furthermore, the good name of Tee Set is much more important than any individual. This can be seen in the incident that occurred many years ago at Emeralda where one persons indiscretion has had us banned from Emeralda until today. So please remember that we are guests at our golf courses and if we want them to give us preferential rates etc. then we need to show respect.

If you are unable to control yourself then we respectfully request that you find another group to play with.

DOGS DINNER:

A further reminder about this great weekend at Rancamaya

Friday, April 22: JAWS golf day and evening dinner at the clubhouse.

Saturday, April 23: DODS and Open Charity day 2 person scramble and Barbecue / Party

Sunday, April 24: DOGS vs Tee Set Match Play and Tee Set regular game. Please sign up for Tee Set Match Play team, we need all the help we can get.

Hotel rooms at R Hotel are still available but you need to book your own accommodation.

BANDUNG BASH 2022:

THERE ARE STILL SOME PLACES AVAILABLE. To register please logon to mygolf2u and select Bandung Bash, I will now open this to all players as it has been an invitation only event up to now.

Our website has all the info you need – bandungbash.com –

Next Sunday at Rainbow Hills is a must do. Spectacular course. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Enjoy
