Next Up: Monthly Medal Cengkareng Sunday 30th August 2020

Another month has whizzed by with the World Cup, Birthday Scramble and Inter-league all being held these past few weeks, so we find ourselves at the end of August and ready for our Monthly Medal.  Thus, on Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and certainly one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng. We will have our August Monthly Medal and the first round of the Eclectic Cycle XIII – 12 in the books and still no 2 time winner!.

A lot to compete for but those just wanting a relaxing round whilst being taken care of by the excellent team at Cengkareng should also sign up.

If you are able to join us please sign up here. First tee time is 12.oopm as usual and the green fee is Rp.875,000. Please note that Cengkareng have in place procedures to comply with social distancing requirements; these will apply both pre- & post round plus on the course and we are all expected to follow these whilst at the Club.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng has available a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts

Committee Message

Your scribe and President has failed his MOT and gone in to the chop shop for running repairs, expected time frame to be operational again is 10-12 weeks and Tee Set will be under the safe guidance of VPs Ric Wymer and Bill Lloyd in the meantime. Please direct inquiries on arrangements over the next few weeks to them –  the schedule thankfully is now up to date and confirmed for most of this time frame so please see the website page for this. Thank you in advance to those who usually step up to assist week to week for their support to the Committee and see you all on the other side…..

Sunday 23rd August 2020 Riverside & JIL Rd III

The Day

Sunday saw our regular Tee Set event and JIL Round III at Riverside with 68 golfers turning out to play and 38 of these also joining into the Tee Set game. The course was in good condition and the weather spectacular all day which made for an excellent round once we got out onto the course.

Our only hiccup was a slightly delayed start for those scheduled on the back 9 semi shot gun as we needed to wait for carts and caddies to be available from the morning. A little frustrating at the time due to a lack of information but thank you to the Riverside GM for calling afterwards to apologize and explain that an unannounced, unscheduled  VVVIP group had decided to come and somewhat thrown arrangements awry. That said, we all finished in good time and despite fear of the long weekend traffic, the ride home was quick.

A warm Tee Set welcome to our newcomers, Steve Tucker and Rolf and Kikki Keil (pictured). Eric Mary at 10 weeks our only notable welcome back.  We look forward to seeing you all out again soon.

Thank you to the Singing President for his assistance with the morning’s registrations and to Lis Wymer for assisting with the scoring after the round.

The Play

No skirts today but as is often the case, our new-comers were recognized during the prize-giving, this week Rolf Keil for Most Strokes and Kikki Keil for Monster Putter. Bob Fleischmann was our Most Improved and Mark Johnson  First Sandy. Andy Coop won First Birdie and Roger Finnie was our Low Putter on the day. Some excellent scoring on the day, net and gross, and Tee Set Captain Simon Reynolds led the way with his excellent Low Gross of 76.

Our Low Net winners (after a flight correction) were Fernando Gaggino, Marcelo de Jesus and Christine Lie. Detailed results are here: Riverside 2308 Results

Christine was back up again for her Long Drive in the JIL novelty holes where she was joined by Harry Lopez (LD) and Alastair Livingston (NTP).

On the day Tee Set lost 3 matches by a very close margin and were pipped by JIL ladder leaders Cloggies 4-6 whilst elsewhere Sandbaggers beat Tin Cups 6-4 and Pocksia beat Sentul Swingers 8-2.

Thank you to everyone for turning out and congratulations to all the winners on the day.

Next Up: Monthly Medal Cengkareng Sunday 30th August 2020

Although we did a quick roll call of winners last night at Riverside, a few cards were missing some critical details and a couple of questions came up on the results as a consequence. We will review the results over the next day or so and in the meantime we roll over to next week-end to give everyone plenty of time to sign-up.

Another month has whizzed by with the World Cup, Birthday Scramble and Inter-league so we find ourselves at the end of August and ready for our Monthly Medal.  Thus, on Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and certainly one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng. Next-Up: Riverside Sunday 23rd August 2020

Riverside

This Sunday we again take the short trip back down to Junction 19 on the Jagorawi toll as we visit the excellent Riverside course. The Greg Norman designed Riverside is always one of the most interesting challenges on the Tee Set schedule with the Shark’s trademark optical illusions regularly fooling the unwary.

In addition to our weekly schedule, this Sunday is also the 3rd round of the 2020 Jakarta Inter-League (JIL) season as Tee Set’s team, under the leadership of this year’s Captain Simon Reynolds, seeks to regain the crown last won in 2015. For those interested in more details of JIL please see the website page here.

As usual, for those Tee Set players participating in JIL (whether for Tee Set or otherwise), please also sign up as normal for the weekly competition so we can capture you for both events.

To join us for the fun of one of Jakarta’s finest courses on Sunday just sign up here as usual. Green fees of Rp850,000 including a shared cart and some free range balls with a tee time of 11.30pm.

Notes:

(1) please be registered before 11.00am as we will have a shot-gun start and it takes a little more time to get bags/players organized out to the respective holes

(2) as JIL will be played off the white tees for men, we will play the white tees for Tee Set too. Ladies remain on the red tees.

Sunday 16th August 2020 Bogor Raya

The Day

An excellent turnout of 46 Tee Setters for this popular course on what was at the start of the day, a bright, warm sunny day. With a few late sign-ups, the course advanced our tee time by 30 minutes to ensure we all got off on time and so with groups completed and submitted to the starter at 11am as requested, we headed down to the practice area with keen anticipation of an excellent day.

Sadly, the early promise of a smooth day evaporated fairly quickly as the starter staff and management failed to coordinate such that the team loading carts had no clue on the pairings when we descended en-mass to start. After some confusion rained, groups were finally connected together and sent out to start on the 2 nines close to our original start time. Having held back other bookings to enable us to start as booked, the starter then proceeded to throw the waiting groups out in front of us which only served to concertina everyone together with only the first groups getting a relatively clean round. All would have OK but the rains then descended on the course at around 5.15pm and when they finally opened and pushed us off the course, most groups still had 2 or 3 holes to play, some 5 1/2 hours after we started. Chaos continued to beset us but enough on all of that for now…. feedback has been provided to Bogor Raya who offer their apologies…..

A warm Tee Set welcome to 3 newcomers on the day, Terrance Martin, Paul Sweeney and Sebastian Braun. Thank you for coming out and joining us and we hope to see you back soon. A warm welcome back to Chakkapong Yingwatt after an impressive 168 weeks and to Aaron Davies after a more modest 21 weeks.

Thank you to Mark Johnson and Craig Edwards for their support on registrations and to Mark for helping out with the scoring input and calculations of the equitable adjustments required for those who could not complete the round.

The Play No skirts on the day but newcomer Sebastian Braun managed a trifecta of awards in adding 1st Par for Handicaps >=30 to his Most Strokes and Monster Putter. Feeling curious, another of our new comers, Paul Sweeney decided to get a practice pose in with the monkey…. much to the delight of Michael Seabrook.

First Sandy was shared between Alastair Livingston and Mark Johnson whilst First Birdie went to Brett Shields and Low Putts to David Baglivo.

Richard Mau won Low Gross and our Low Net winners were Roger Finnie, Matthew Makarenko and Holger Molendyk.

Thank to everyone for their patience on the day and apologies again for the less than smooth arrangements. Congratulations to our winners and detailed results of the day are here: Bogor Ray 1608 Results

Tee Set Match-play

One match decided on the day with our only 2-time winner David Baglivo defeating Tee Set Captain Simon Reynolds 4&2.

Tee Set 37th Anniversary Scramble Matoa Nasional Sunday 9th August 2020

Sunday saw 82 Tee Setters gather at Matoa Nasional for our Anniversary Scramble event as we celebrated our 37th Birthday and “never a week-end missed” of golf in Jakarta. With numbers on the course restricted due to social distancing and the weather turning up with a bright, sunny, still day, we were all to have a smooth and enjoyable day.

With the Hot Hed BBQ in full swing at the clubhouse, Asia Serv smoothies & PT Delta beers on hand and our excellent support team making sure drinks got round the course, we were able to keep refreshed as we plotted our way around the fairways. The course itself was in good condition after some maintenance work done in preparation for the day on our behalf.

As always the novelty holes provided some entertainment and a break from the regular flow of the game with the pool cue putter hole particularly throwing up some interesting styles; Santi Miller leading her Pie Men from the front with her birdie putt on 8.

We welcomed several newcomers on the day: Andre Kaunang, Efa Siahaan, Antonio Wahono, Park HR, Kimberly Dressler, Firman and Affandy Zulkarnain. We hope you all had an enjoyable day and to see you back out again soon,

A warm appreciation and thank to all our sponsors who supported the day: Hot Hed, Asia Serv, PT Delta & San Miguel, JS Luwansa, Asian Tigers, Riverside, Matoa Nasional, Andy Coop, James Bristow, Jeff Durham and Doug McQuater. Your contributions and assistance all make the day so much more successful. Thank you also to all the Matoa team and our assistants on the day, Brenda, Aisha and Taupan for all your efforts to make everything run smoothly.

After the round we retired to the upstairs function room where we conducted the prize giving and then enjoyed a fairly late finish as the tales of the day got recounted. Lots of photos of the day here.

The Prize-Giving

After VP Bill Lloyd welcomed everyone to the event, VP Ric Wymer said a few words on the recently departed Tee Setters, Stan Cook and Ian Barr which was followed by a customary toast. President Roger Finnie gave a warm thanks to all our sponsors and then welcomed all the past Presidents to the stage to cut the cake as the Singing President led the chorus of Happy Birthday to our birthday boy, Richard Mau. The Clyde Wickiser Trophy for Clubman of the Year was then presented to Keith Miller for all his support and work on the committee over the last 10 years. With Keith returning to the UK later this month we also gave him a small token of our appreciation to be consumed beforehand. We also gave our long time Secretary Brenda Mayland our warm thanks and appreciation and wished her all the best as she heads off to get married.

After a lucky draw we called up our friends from HOGS to say a few words about their charity work for cleft palate which was followed by a pass around of the hat with Tee Setters contributing generously. Richard Mau and JS Luwansa had donated a lucky draw prize which was then auctioned off for the charity thanks to Alastair Livingston putting it back into the hat. Overall Rp8,584,000 was donated to HOGS on the day and this will support at least 1 more operation.

Onto the prizes and first up were our best dressed team winners with Hustlers (John & Sarah Brown, Andy and Octa Abram) being squeezed into 2nd place by the 4 Maskerteers (Cucu Chandra, Tom Grace, Steve Sutton and Doug McQuater) but both getting some wine for their excellent efforts to coordinate outfits on the day.

Most drives contributed went to Arnold Castillon and for handicaps >=30 to Dimitri Burge for their anchoring of their team’s efforts. Long drive with the 1980’s driver went to Andre Kaunang whilst NTP went to Philip Schaferdiek. Best gross, not otherwise in the prizes, went to Fishy Tales (Jeff Durham, Fitrat Ameer, Efan Siahaan and Antonio Wahono).

In the net prizes, in 3rd place were 3 Poms and a Convict (Craig Edwards, Andy Coop, Mick Dodsworth and Dave Prosser) whilst our runners up were Bags of Tricks (David Baglivo, James Bristow, Gaurav Shirke and Tribhuvan Singh). Our winners on the day were Par-Tee-On (Philip Schaferdiek, Riahana Ariestya, Jay Croakley and Kimberly Dressler).

Thank you to everyone who made the day a special celebration for Tee Set and congratulations to all our winners on the day. Our final results table is below.

Next Up: Bogor Raya Sunday 16th August 2020 @ 12pm

Sunday 2nd August 2020 Riverside

The Day

Sunday saw us head down to the home of the Tee Set World Cup, Riverside for our 5th edition of this now, very popular event. At the starting gate we had 19 teams vying to succeed the UN team of Mark Fiorello, Jude Alexander, Billy Viriava and Jaco Zaayman as winners after they finally manage to wrestle the trophy off the 3-time defending Champions, Srikandi, last year.

In addition to our 19 teams, we had a group of 5 players who joined us just for the fun of the day and the 81 players were treated to an excellent day of golf. Our start was planned for 12pm to enable us to have the course to ourselves and the Riverside team did a wonderful job of sorting out all the arrangements to get us off on time, in the right groups and on the right holes.! With the weather being sunny, the course playing hard and fast and only a gentle wind, we were all able to get round in good time so that the prize-giving could be done early, leaving plenty of time to share what might have been.

In addition to the Riverside team, our appreciation to our friends from DOGS, Sentul Swingers, Tee Drivers and JAWS who came out to support the day. We hope to see many of you back next Sunday at the scramble….

A big thank you to Event Supremos Craig Edwards and Jens Roestel who did a super job in getting so many teams signed up, to Dan Javier and PT Delta for their support on the prizes and Alastair Livingston for his support in getting the scores entered with minimal delay. As you will note from the prize-giving below, there were just rewards from the golfing gods for most of these efforts!

The Play

Some excellent scores with 8 players breaking 80 gross on the day, a feast of birdies (26 players) and a lone eagle on the last to Giles Taarland. Many players were at or below their net par with a special mention to Paud Daud (64) and Tribhuvan Singh (65) for their excellent returns and no surprise, these helped their teams to the top 2 placings in the standings.

For the non-world cup competitors, we gave a prize for low net among the 5 players with Christine Lie being the winner of a sleeve of balls. Our skill prize winners were Fitrat Ameer for NTP and Rosie Putri and Bayu Juluis for LD.

Dan Javier was called up to present the prizes along with Bill Lloyd and his first order of business was to present to himself as the PT Delta Force team (Dan, Jude Alexander, Marcelo de Jesus and Ronald Lim) placed 3rd in the net competition. Second in the net competition was Jai Ho (Vinay Mathur, Tribuhvan Singh, Holger Molendyk and Shashvat Pandey). Also not having to move far was VP Bill Lloyd who’s team Old Glory (Bill, Richard Mau, Mark Souders and David Baglivo) placed 2nd in the gross competition.

No less surprised than themselves, the winners came from the event organizers with Men at Work (Paud Daud, Craig Edwards, Craig Ewers and a reluctant Aussie for the day, Andy Hyndman) winning the net competition and the Kilted Warriors (Phil Murray, Doug McQuater, Roger Finnie and Peng Siong) winning the gross competition – both by narrow margins.

A huge thank you to everyone again for making the day such a success and below are the final standings.

Sunday 26th July 2020 Cengkareng Monthly Medal

The Day

A warm sunny Sunday and our Monthly Medal event saw 42 Tee Setters turn out for our regular end of month visit to the excellent Cengkareng. The course was in great condition and the greens running a little faster than recent visits so we all enjoyed a good day out whilst being well looked after by the Cengkareng team and management.

A warm welcome to Ronnie Knowles and Andy Gillan who joined us for the first time and notable welcome backs to Andy Vincent, Ezra Alexander, Karl Park and Matthew Marakenko.

A big thank you to Craig Edwards who managed all the pairings and registrations in the morning whilst the Committee had a side-bar meeting on arrangements for the next couple of weeks and VP Ric Wymer who managed the scoring and prize-giving as the President went home early to recuperate following a long night after Saturday’s St Andrew’s vs St George’s match. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

A rusty Andy Vincent took some time to adjust to the greens so took home our Monster Putter and the tricky conditions were reflected in the number contenders for the prize. Andy was however to recover his touch on the back 9 and win Most Improved. Mike Riley edged Most Strokes and our skirt photo was shared by Gaurav Shirke, Holger Molendyk, Jude Alexander, Mike Riley and Tom Grace.

Doug McQuater was our first Sandy and Ruth Lajousky birdied the First to take that prize. Juju Juhaeriah was our Low Putter saving the Treasurer’s blushes by beating 5 others who were just a putt behind. Low Gross went to President Roger Finnie.

Our Low Net winners were James Bristow, Sami Kekonen and Tom Grace whilst our Monthly Medal skill prizes saw James and Juju up again for their Long Drives and Sami for NTP.

Pipping Sami and James who tied second on 40 points was our Monthly Medal winner Karl Park who scored 42 points to secure July’s honours.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Cengkareng July20 Results

Sunday was also the end of Eclectic XII but the scores have yet to be input to calculate the winner so this will be announced at our next event.

Tee Set Match Play

Sunday being the last date for the current round saw a couple of games played with David Baglivo using his hot start to win 5&4 over Chris Lever whilst in a match of fluctuating fortunes on the front 9, Mark Johnson recovered from an early deficit to win 4&3 over Leon Bivolaru. Please remember to submit your scores to our Match Play Supremo, James Ross, to make the results official.

The Event Supremos, Craig Edwards and Jens Roestel have already got 19 teams registered for the competition so due to the social distancing protocols in place, there are just a few spaces (8 to be exact) left for Sunday after which we will create a waiting list…names and teams signed up so far are here: 20200608 World Cup event signup 2707

Remember teams are by nationality/logical geographical regions with national bragging rights on the line, so please sign up here when you are ready with your team.

For those not yet in a team or just wanting to come along and join the day, registrations are open for single players and please sign up here.

Please note we will have a  shot-gun start at 12.00pm so please be at the course by 11.00am so can complete registrations and prepare carts to the allocated starting holes.
