Next Up: Gading Raya Sunday 21st June 2020

Originally advertised as being at Rainbow Hills but with Gading Raya having reopened we have substituted the visit on the schedule to make up for missing it a couple of weeks ago when we went to Emeralda instead. Note that the course is operating a restricted schedule so we have booked 12 tee times, the most they could offer us of the just 22 available on the day. It means we have a maximum player list of 48 players so please sign up early as we will be managing the list based on first come, first registered. If you sign up and then cannot make it, please also let us know so we can substitute a player from the waiting list should we be over subscribed. Tee times are from 11.10a.m. so we’ll be finished nice and early with plenty of time to enjoy the service and refreshments in the clubhouse afterwards.

Tee times off 1 & 10 at 11.10am have been confirmed along with the attractive pricing of Rp850,000 with carts. We presently have 32 players registered, so 16 slots remain open: if you are able to join us please sign up here and we look forward to seeing all who can make it on Sunday.

Tee Set Match Play Championships

A reminder that the rest of the first knock-out round matches are due to be completed within the next 2 weeks, 28th June (previously 12th April) so we can complete the tournament by November as usual. Please also remember to submit your results by email to James Ross so he can update the competition’s progress.

Forthcoming Tee Set Events

We are still busy sorting out the schedule and some dates which we are earmarking over the next couple of months are as follows:

  • JIL July 12th @ Riverside: Usual Tee Set Sunday event and next round of JIL (postponed from above date);
  • World Cup of Tee Set August 2nd @ Riverside: Tentative date for this event, moved from 12th July. Event Supremos Craig Edwards and Jens Roestel will be tapping up the captains to help arrange the teams for this popular event so please put your hand up to submit a team and participate in this fun event. Last year 20 teams battled it out for the trophy with the United Nations edging everyone out;
  • Birthday Anniversary Scramble 9th August @ Matoa: As the current schedule and details to follow shortly.

Both of the latter 2 events are now open and team sign-ups for the World Cup is here and the Scramble here.

Sunday 14th June 2020 Riverside and Juergen Degert Trophy

The Day

Sunday saw Djakarta Old Golf Society (DOGS) and Tee Set team up for a highly successful joint day with both their regular society days and the match for the Juergen Degert Trophy being held at the excellent Riverside venue. In total, we had 64 players turn out on the day and judging by the response after the round, its a format we should look at for another event. Juergen, a stalwart of both groups and the inspiration for the creation of the match, would have been proud to see the spirit of camaraderie and competition on display during the day, and perhaps even the consumption of it afterwards….

As always, a lot of work went into making the day run smoothly and so a big thank you to the following for their partnership with us:

  • The Riverside team and management for their support on the starting and restaurant arrangements: the pool side area was a great after-round venue and a lot of work went into setting it up on our behalf;
  • Werner and his team from Jason’s Meats for the BBQ and for offering to look after the stragglers who missed out on the full selection due to their late finish;
  • John Brown, Kevin Dobson and Craig Edwards from the DOGS Committee;
  • Team Captains Simon Reynolds and Doug McQuater

An early start for your President to ensure the set up was ready for the arrival of the players saw our sponsors buckets put to good use as collection receptacles in the morning and for their more normal usage during the post match festivities. A team photo before tee off captured the mood and we all headed out on schedule for a smooth and enjoyable round under perfect blue skies.

After play was finished, we gathered around the pool to enjoy a social evening with the BBQ whilst the scoring was completed and the winners on the day determined.

Thanks to the DOGS Committee for conducting the prize giving and to Jens Roestel for his help at registrations in the morning.

The Play

Although not everyone clearly read the pre-round posts, we had announced that the prizes on the day would be following the DOGS format and held as one competition to keep it simple.

Nearest the Pins were won by Takahash-san and Eric Mary, Drive & Pitches by Doug McQuater and Jari Antikainen and the Long Drives by Chris Cromarty and Edwin Thieroff – the latter quite an exceptional distance and for which there was much discussion afterwards as to whether it was all man-powered or sprinkler head assisted …. one which seemed to take several drinks to resolve.

Booby Prize (23 points) went to Craig Edwards and Kathy Scalabre got Most Exercise for her 115 gross. Richard Mau was the Putting Champion with just 24 putts required during the round whilst Alastair Livingston and Roger Finnie both navigated the course in 78 strokes, Roger winning the prize on a back nine count-back.

With great golfing conditions, the course playing well and bragging rights the line, there was no surprise that a number of great scores were turned in. A couple of 43 pointers were expecting to be in the hunt but they were eclipsed by Sami Kekonen who’s 47 points secured only the runners-up spot as Michael Seabrook found some long lost form to score 48 points on the day and secure the Little Dog trophy on offer this week.

In the match, a few close matches all fell the DOGS side of the ledger which led to a comfortable victory 7-3 and the trophy remaining in their cabinet for another year. Captain Doug McQuater was up to receive the trophy after the Captains had thanked their teams for their participation in what was an excellent match-up. Congratulations to DOGS and to all the winners on the day…. looking forward to the next one!

Next Up: Riverside and Match vs D.O.G.S. 14th June 2020

With the current round of the Jakarta Inter-League due to be held at Riverside this week being postponed until July 12th, we have taken the opportunity to re-arrange our annual fixture with the D.O.G.S. for the Juergen Degert Trophy. With D.O.G.S playing their current Eclectic cycle at Riverside too, the stars were obviously aligned for us to be able to slot in the fixture which has been running since 2015 and is named in honour of Juergen Degert, a long-time member of both Societies and the inspiration for the event. Captains Simon Reynolds (Tee Set) and Doug McQuater (DOGS) are putting the final touches on their teams as both Societies seek to win the trophy and bragging rights for the year… presently D.O.G.S. hold the trophy and a 3-1 lead in the series after the initial match in 2015 was drawn.

The day is open to everyone, whether playing in the match or just looking for a quiet Sunday round of golf with friends. To keep administration simple, both Societies will be running the skill and playing prizes as a joint event following the D.O.G.S. format of play so your weekly scorecard will follow a slightly different format but with the usual scoring for gross, stableford points, putts etc…. Following the round, there is a BBQ arranged around the Riverside pool and those wishing to partake in a dip should bring a towel and appropriate bathing wear.  When signing up, please confirm if you will be joining for the BBQ as we need to advise the chef of the numbers to prepare for… we will also be collecting the BBQ fee of Rp150k at the same time as the registration fee for the day so we will all be free to enjoy the post match celebrations and prize giving.

In terms of play, the match pairings will be arranged to play first and the rest of the players from both Societies will follow the match but we ask you be available and registered by 10.30am so we can inform the course on all the pairings and take advantage of an early start, semi shot gun or otherwise as we can arrange with the starter.

To join us for the fun of one of Jakarta’s finest courses on Sunday just sign up here as usual. Green fees of Rp800,000 including cart. As we are running a joint event there is no need to sign up to both Societies so please sign up here if you have not already signed up via D.O.G.S. & vice versa.

For those in the match, you may find the handicap on your match scorecard is a little different from the that on your daily play scorecard, this is not an administrative error but only a reflection that the match pairings were done on last week-end’s handicaps and the weekly cards reflect the latest handicap indices….

Forthcoming Tee Set Events

We are still busy sorting out the schedule and some dates which we are earmarking over the next couple of months are as follows:

  • JIL July 12th @ Riverside: Usual Tee Set Sunday event and next round of JIL (postponed from above date);
  • World Cup of Tee Set August 2nd @ Riverside: Tentative date for this event, moved from 12th July. PCR Swab Tests

With these tests now required for travel amongst other reasons, our sponsor Mayapada Hospitals has put together a package for the performance of these tests and details of the tests are available on the Classifieds page.

Sunday 7th June 2020 Emeralda

The Day

Another excellent turn-out for the pretty, challenging Emeralda course and with an early tee off planned for 11.00am, a big thank you to everyone who arrived early on what was a warm and sunny day.

Unfortunately, after 3 recent good experiences, we were to be let down by the course who firstly were not ready for us to tee off as scheduled, eventually the first ball was hit close to 45 minutes late, and when we did get onto the course, a constant stream of groups being inserted into our flights meant we were over 5 1/2 hours out on the course. Our first groups in were back some 6 1/2 hours after the scheduled start which meant we did not do our usual prize giving – winners to receive their prizes next time we see you.

We were able to use the morning’s delay to get last week’s monthly medal into the right hands with Hana passing over the trophy and the medal to the winner Mikko. We also were able to welcome our 7 newcomers: Willy Noronha, Shlok Rajeev, father and son Shivashish & Shashvat Pandey, Rajeev Rajeshwaren, Matt Roberts and Elena Viktoria Holovcsak. Welcome to Tee Set and we look forward to seeing you out with us again soon.

One award we did not miss however was the skirt which also gathered our 7 winners together briefly: Andy wood, Benedikt Blenk, David Baglivo, Fred Papachristidis-Bove, Jari Antikainen, Matt Roberts and Peter Bosterli who were also joined by last week’s awardees.

Thank you to Fred Papachristidis-Bove and Jens Roestel for their assistance before and after the round to help with the administration on the day.

The Play

Some excellent play with a fifth of the group being at or below handicap so congratulations to all our winners on the day. Detailed results are here: Emeralda 706 Results

Tee Set Match Play Championships

2 further matches were completed on Sunday, both at the second attempt as the first games were both halved. Timo Karonen won 4&2 against Santi Miller and David Baglivo beat Dan Javier 5&4.

A reminder that the rest of the first knock-out round matches are due to be completed by 28th June (previously 12th April) so we can complete the tournament by November as usual. Please also remember to submit your results by email to James Ross so he can update the competition’s progress.

Sunday 31st May 2020 Cengkareng

The Day

Our first formal game back in over 2 months and an excellent turnout at the ever popular Cengkareng. With social distancing arrangements in place, we minimized the pre- and post-match gathering with the prize-giving announcements/prizes mostly postponed for another week: meaning that our winners on the day are sitting with a small credit in the Tee Set coffers. It didn’t prevent a large snafu in the awards however… more of which below.

The Cengkareng team were excellent as usual despite the players being suitably spread out, never more so in the professionalism with which they took care of Craig Edwards when he accidentally stood on a cobra near the 13th hole. A quick trip to the hospital and an anti-venom treatment saw him back to reassure us all of his good fortune before we departed in the evening. Many thanks to the GM Kurt and all his team.

Out on the course, the fairways and greens were in excellent shape, the rough a little gnarly and with the weather fair through-out, there were some excellent scores returned. With a slightly earlier start, we were also able to get round in good time despite the higher than booked turn-out.

A pleasure to welcome 3 newcomers Tim Fehling, Rosalia Tjokro and Jay Croakley. Everybody was officially a welcome back after 2 months of Tee Set hibernation!

The Play

As mentioned we did a very curtailed prize-giving so all the winners from the regular prizes will be receiving their prizes at a future event…. As will our actual Monthly Medal winner Mikko Koskiverta who had made an error in adding up his scorecard which we only picked up on when entering scores today, meaning he and not Hana Ariestya took home the shield. Thank you to Hana for her understanding on the matter and we will arrange the photo with the shield next week Mikko.

Less difficult were the Monthly Medal skill prizes with Juju Juhaeriah and Simon Reynolds winning the Long Drives and Emiliano Marcelo stiffing his shot to 2 feet to win NTP on the day.

Thanks for everyone’s understanding on the day as we managed our come-back and to Jens Roestel and VP Ric Wymer for their assistance with the administration on the day.

Tee Set Match Play Championships

Sunday saw the resumption of play in the competition with Santi Miller and Timo Karonen playing out a thrilling draw. Both decided to replay their match so they will recommence battle next Sunday.

A reminder that the rest of the first knock-out round matches are due to be completed by 28th June (previously 12th April) so we can complete the tournament by November as usual.

Next Up: Sunday 31st May 2020 Cengkareng

On Sunday we make our first tentative steps in returning to our usual schedule of events and head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and certainly one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng. We will kick-off events with the May Monthly Medal but Round III of the Eclectic Cycle XII will be held in June once everything is expected to be more back to whatever normal will look like going forward.

Your Committee is still doing some work on the rest of the year’s schedule and slotting in the key events which we wish to hold: JIL, World Cup, Birthday Scramble, Championships, Match with DOGS etc… but to fit in the Tee Set Match-Play we have already determined that the current first knock-out round needs to recommence from this week. There are 6 or 7 match-ups still to be decided and the deadline is extended to 28th June for these to be completed. We will send out the schedule for the remainder of the competition along with the other Tee Set events once it is settled but can those with outstanding match-ups please try and complete them as soon as possible.

If you are able to join us please sign up here. First tee time is midday as usual and the green fee is Rp.875,000. A reminder that Cengkareng have in place procedures to comply with social distancing requirements; these will apply both pre- & post round plus on the course and we are all expected to follow these whilst at the Club.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng has available a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts

Tee Set Committee Message to All Members

We trust all of you and your families have managed to stay safe and well during the last couple of months. Whilst some continue to remain largely within the safety of their homes and a few are overseas awaiting the lifting of travel restrictions to return to Jakarta, there is also a desire for a partial return to golfing normality amongst many of the Group. After canvassing some of the active players and taking into account the current situation, our plan presently is to return to official events with the Monthly Medal at Cengkareng on Sunday 31st May. Pre- & Post-match social distancing arrangements and on course protocols will follow the arrangements set out with the Club Management.

This is assuming the current social distancing restrictions do not get updated and/or extended after they are due to expire on 22nd May 2020. Please look out for further news on this early next week. If we are able to recommence as planned, we will work out the schedule for Tee Set events through the rest of the year, including the revised Match Play schedule, and advise everyone in due course.

In the meantime, there is a casual game booked at Riverside for this Saturday, Sunday being the beginning of Idul Fitri based on present information. Should Idul Fitri be announced later in the week as commencing on Saturday then the game will be moved to Sunday (as the course will be closed Saturday) and we will update you. Please sign up as usual here and we will advise the course of those planning to play.

Congratulations to VP Bill Lloyd for his Hole-In-One last Sunday at Bogor Raya. Bill is seen here picking the ball out the hole on 11th green with a truly local track-man of the shot being laid out on the green thanks to Richard Mau’s recently purchased hand of bananas. Bill was able to celebrate his 2nd ever hole-in-one with everyone who joined him at the restaurant afterwards.

For everyone celebrating, we wish you Selamat Hari Raya Idul Fitri for next Sunday… or Saturday should it change….

Tee Set Committee Message

As per our communication last week, Tee Set has postponed all official events and competitions until improvements in the current situation are seen. This includes the current round of the Match Play, the Eclectic, the Monthly Medal and our participation in the Jakarta Inter-League in addition to our regular weekly competitions. As such there will be no further weekly posts or updates sent out to members until such time as we are ready to restart our regular games; at that time we will publish a new schedule for these events as needed.

For clarity, this will also include our planned week-ends on 1-3 May at Gunung Geulis (course is closed) and on 9-10 May at Rancamaya.

A few players are still wishing to get out in the current environment and as we have bookings for the next few weeks already made, we will update the “Yes I’m Playing” page with the details of the arrangements so individual players can make their own decisions whether to play or not. We will inform the course of players wishing to fulfill the booking but the games will not be convened by the Committee. There will be no further reminder posts or other communication through the blog regarding this. If there are any questions for the Committee regarding any matter pertaining to Tee Set please contact us directly or via the Tee Set email: tee.set.jakarta@gmail.com.

Anybody who has scores to report can continue to send them into our Secretary as normal: Teesetcards@gmail.com.

Stay safe everyone and we are looking forward to seeing you all on the other side soon.
