Your scribe is in transit to Jakarta and will return only later in the week so the report for Cengkareng will follow shortly once he can assess the system for photos etc…; however Tee Set waits for no man and so we launch next week’s game in the interim.

This week we take a small trip down the Jagorawi toll to the excellent Emeralda which has proven popular with Tee Setters over the last couple of years, if somewhat hard to get a confirmed booking! Thank you to VP Ric Wymer for his perseverance for securing this week’s arrangements. With its 27 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer you can walk the footsteps of legends whilst enjoying one of the more picturesque courses we will play all year.

The rate is Rp999k including cart and with an 11.30am tee time we will be able to enjoy fully the day and not be too late returning home. To come and join in all the fun of a Tee Set Sunday please sign up here.

Next Up: Cenkareng Sunday 23rd February 2020

On Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and certainly one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2020.

In addition to being the second Monthly Medal of 2020, this week will also be the 2nd round of Cycle XII of the Tee Set Eclectic.

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of the courses deservedly famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us please sign up here. First tee time is midday as usual and the green fee will be advised asap after we are advised of the new pricing – not expected to be significantly different to last year’s Rp.875,000.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng has available a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts

Tee Set Match Play

A quick reminder that this week is the last week for the preliminary round games after which all the registered participants will be placed into the 2 knock-out brackets. Sunday also represents the last week for any last minute sign-ups as we have a few places remaining and can slot people straight into the knock-out round. Please visit the website if you would like to join:  teesetgolf.wordpress.com/match-play

 Jakarta Inter-League

Tee Set will be entering a team in the 2020 JIL competition and so Captain Simon Reynolds is canvassing for players interested to join the team. An enjoyment of match-play is the main criteria and we will be seeking players from across the grades as a balanced team usually gives the best opportunity for success; the only limitation which may affect selection is that the handicap limit in JIL is set at 27 so players with a handicap higher than this will be restricted to claiming 27 strokes in the games (less of course the handicap of the lowest handicapped player in the game).

If you are interested to represent Tee Set in JIL please contact Simon directly on WhatsApp +6287882094706 or catch him at a Tee Set game and let him know. JIL will now start on 8th March 2020.

Other Events

As always, there are other interesting golf events going on outside of Tee Set Sundays and other Golf Society regular days so please check our Classified Page regularly to keep up to date with what is going on.

Sunday 16th February 2020 Imperial Golf Klub

The Day

Sunday saw us stay west to try and avoid the rains with a return after 8 months to Imperial Golf Klub. Unfortunately, our best laid plans were scuppered by blanket rain all around Jakarta but the 24 players who braved the day mostly persevered through the showers to finish in good time despite the delays.

The geese certainly enjoyed the day and we also were able to see the continued renovations ongoing at the course for the new properties been built around the 10th and 11th holes. Whilst marked as a water hazard, fortunately we only lost a few balls and no golfers as getting up the steep banks would have required some effort.

No new-comers this week and our welcome backs were only 19 weeks to Supachai Suesomboom and Warut Waramit.

As always we were well looked after by the team at Imperial and thank you to VP’s Ric Wymer and Bill Lloyd for looking after the day and Beby for managing the scoring.

The Play

Imperial always provides a challenge and the rain made conditions a little harder which was reflected in the scoring. 2 skirts on the day for Weera Limjirakajorn and Tan Chee Hwa with Timo Karonen taking Most Strokes and Indar Dhaliwal Monster Putter.

Obviously refreshed after the rains, David Baglivo took home Most Improved whilst Indar recovered his fine with First Par for handicaps >=30. Missing out on First Birdie after his 3rd shot landed directly into the hole from the fairway only to bounce out, Bill Lloyd nevertheless sank the putt for First Sandy having been in the fairway bunker off the tee. Jari Antikainen took home Low Putts and Mark Johnson First Birdie.

Low Gross went to Richard Mau whilst our Low Net’s, all on 70, were taken by Marcelo de Jesus, Leon Bivolaru and Weera Limjorakajorn.

Detailed results are here: Form_ Current Results 16-02-20

Next Up Imperial Golf Klub Sunday 16th February 2020 11.55am

Tee time is 11.55 a.m. and the price Rp995,000 with carts. We will need to provide names to the course on Saturday morning latest so please sign up as soon as you can to help us with the administration with Imperial. Those that can join us please sign up here.

Note: Given all the heavy rains recently, we have decided that we will play lift clean & place on the fairways only until the end of March unless announced separately before the commencement of any week’s games. The exception will be at Riverside for Inter-league where a decision with the other captains will be made on the day.

A reminder also that the first round of the match play finishes at Cengkareng the week after so please make sure your games are played before the cut-off.

Rancamaya and Gunung Geulis during Ramadan

You will note on the schedule the forthcoming visit to Rancamaya on the week-end of 9th/10th May. As usual we will be making a week-end of it with a casual round on Saturday, a pre-match BBQ sponsored for Tee Set members and the Sunday regular event and annual match versus the Djakarta Old Golfing Society. Sign-ups and booking information will be opened up shortly so please look out for this.

The week-end before, we will be at Gunung Geulis and will be coordinating rounds at both courses over this long week-end. Look out for more details shortly.

Sunday 9th February 2020 Gading Raya

The Day

Despite managing the final round of an Indonesian Amateur world ranking event and some other big groups on the day, the Gading Raya team were very accommodating to our late booking and secured our usual 2 tee start at 11.30am for the 43 players who turned up on Sunday to enjoy their round. Encouraged by the starter several groups headed to the tee early only to find a small queue but we were to tee off on time and enjoy a smooth round apart from a wait at the turn for 4 flights which had got in ahead of us on the change over.

The recent rains had left the course quite wet and together with the strong breeze which blew for most of our round, it made conditions a little more challenging than usual which was reflected in the scores. However, the course played well and despite the heavy traffic, we were round in reasonable time. The breeze also kept the rain away with only a short shower interrupting the otherwise pleasant golfing weather.

A warm Tee Set welcome was given to Steven Conlin and a welcome back to Matthew Cherrett after 23 weeks. Many thanks to VP Ric Wymer who took care of the scoring and announcements and photos of the day are here.

The Play

No Monster Putter this week but a 3 way tie for both skirts and Most Strokes kept the treasurer happy. Oliver Fritz was joined by Michael Mueller and David Baglivo for the skirt photo and by Timo Karonen and Holger Molendyk for Most Strokes. Indah Dhaliwal secured First Par for Handicaps >=30 and Weera Limjirakajorn was Most Improved.

First Sandy went to Matthias Coessens, First Birdie to Chris Lever and Low Putts was won by Mick Mongold. Tim Knight and Simon Oxley couldn’t be separated for Low Gross so were both rewarded with the prize.

Our Low Net winners were Graham Parsonage who had the best round of the day, Andy Coop on a count-back from Matthew Cherrett and Aurelie Neufkens.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Gading 090220 Results

Next Up Gading Raya Sunday 9th February 2020 11.32 AM

Originally advertised as being at BSD but our price negotiations having been unresolved by the time we needed to confirm this week, we have booked to return to Gading Raya instead. A thank you to the Gading Raya team for accommodating us at short notice and we will continue to try and secure a reasonable deal with BSD so we can return there shortly.

Congratulations to Simon Oxley who secured his first Hole-in-One last week whilst spending CNY golfing in Bali with some friends. As Simon may be playing this week its another good reason to join to help him celebrate, assuming he makes it of course.

Tee times off 1 & 10 at 11.32am have been confirmed along with the attractive pricing of Rp850,000 with carts. If you are able to join us please sign up here and we look forward to seeing all who can make it on Sunday.

2020 Tee Set Schedule

After much negotiation on some of the courses, we have finally developed the initial schedule for the year. This is posted on the web-site and you can download the schedule should you wish. Note it remains fluid as always so look out for the regular posts for what is happening week to week.

We also remain open for helpful ideas on strengthening the schedule, like adding Takara this year and re-considering Palm Springs (Sedana) now that the toll way is better. Please let Roger know if you have come across a hidden gem or have a good contact at one of the courses we have not visited for a while due to difficulties in getting a suitable arrangement for the group.

Sunday 2nd February 2020 Takara Golf Resort

R.I.P Ian Barr

We start this week’s post with the sad news of the passing of Ian Barr on 20th January after a battle with cancer. Ian was someone who carried himself with a sense of humility and  generosity, always a smile on the face and looking to enjoy life’s experiences to the fullest. A regular at Tee Set and across other golf groups here in Jakarta, Ian remains the only Tee Setter to have won both the Tee Set Championship and Tee Set Match Play which he achieved in the same year, 2009.

Our condolences to Jan Barron, Ian’s partner, and all his family.

The Day

A wet morning, a longer than normal drive to a new course, the night after the BWA Ball … many of the reasons circulating for not coming on Sunday but for those 21 Tee Setters who made the effort, we were rewarded with an excellent day of golf on an enjoyable lay out offering a fair challenge for all levels of players; fairways were relatively wide and open, the bunkers and greens in good condition despite the obvious recent rains and a few holes required careful shot selection off the tees. The general consensus was that we should add a couple more visits to Takara for the calendar making it a good addition to our schedule even with the journey being around 75-90 minutes from central Jakarta.

We were also blessed with the weather as apart from a brief shower, the day was dry and the end of the round finished in warm sunshine as we gathered in the clubhouse for the prize giving after a smooth round.

We welcomed 2 new Tee Setters on Sunday with Prosad Biswas and Perry Wang joining us for the first time. No notable welcome backs in terms of time but it was a pleasure to see Dave Prosser back in action.

Many thanks to Simon Reynolds for making the arrangements with the course and to Ric Wymer for the scoring and registrations on the day. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

A trifecta of booby prizes for our newcomer Prosad Biswas who took home Monster Putter, Most Strokes and a skirt, the latter shared with Marcelo de Jesus and Keith Gorman.

Most Improved went to Alastair Livingston, First Birdie to Roger Finnie and Low Putts to Keith Gorman on a count back from Mick Mongold.  Low Gross on the day went to Tim Knight.

Our Low Net prizes went to James Bristow, Matt McGowan and Tribhuvan Singh (eventually after his handicap was updated but not before Jari Antikainen could collect his reward as the announced winner : – )!)

In the Tee Set Match Play, our first game was completed with Tribhuvan Singh continuing his rich vein of form to win 7&6 against new Tee Set JIL Captain Simon Reynolds. Detailed results from the day are here: Takara Results

Next Up: Takara Golf Resort Sunday 2nd February 2020 11.30am

For the first time in a couple of years, this Sunday we add a new course to the Tee Set schedule as we head out way west, actually just a little further west than before, to Takara Golf Resort. Several Tee Setters have visited the course in recent months and come back with good reports so we have decided to give it a go.

Takara is around 55 km west of Jakarta on the Tangerang-Merak Toll, exit one later than Kedaton at the East Balaraja Toll Gate 1 and head south – best look it up on google maps. We have negotiated a good rate for this inaugural visit at Rp750,000 including cart (usually Rp725,000 walking) and the tee time is 11.30am. If you are interested to sign up and try our this new venue with us please do so here.

The distance is around the same as Rancamaya or Lotus Lakes but for those who usually taxi, we would be happy to help coordinate with other Tee Setters to arrange lift sharing if you are not able to find someone yourselves. Please make a note when signing up in the comments box so we can get onto it early in the week.

Tee Set Match Play

The drawing for the 2020 first round matches to determine the 2 brackets was held on Sunday as planned with the current 23 registered players matched up by a draw. There are still some places left in the competition and so we can accept additional entries through the end of February when the Emas and Kunning brackets will be determined and the competition moves to its knock-out stage.

If you are still interested to join up please register here. For those already registered, please check out the same page to check your first round opponent and to arrange your matches with-in the deadline of 23rd February 2020.

Late sign ups will be placed directly to the knock-out round so do not worry if your name is not there but you have already registered.

Schedule

We are still playing with the schedule as we balance maintaining a reasonable value proposition for our games with the rainy season challenges and a variety of courses. We will post the first semester later this week but the current planning for February, after this week is:

  • 9th February BSD
  • 16th February Senayan
  • 23rd February Cengkareng Monthly Medal

Sunday 26th January 2020 Cengkareng Monthly Medal

The Day

A very weary President Roger Finnie arrived fairly early but with coordination an issue after the excellent Burns Supper the night before, he was most appreciative of Craig Edwards and VP Ric Wymer taking the reins for the day. Although the day itself was a perfect sunny day, that we were able to be playing at all after several days of rain is a testament to the quality of the course drainage as can be seen from the contrasting pictures of the 18th green from Friday afternoon and Sunday morning. The 10th tee box must however have been very soft as the VP of Almost Everything appeared to have sunk up to his knees whilst warming up before the round.

Clearly some softer areas on the course but over all it played very well, if just a little longer than normal which was reflected in the scoring on the day. As always, we were well looked after by the Cengkareng team and a good day was had by all.

No welcome backs of note this week but 4 new-comers were given a warm Tee Set welcome: Dean Callaway, Gary Wilkinson, Kwang Sik Kim and Paul Robertson.

Pictures of the day can be found here and many thanks to our Secretary Beby for doing all the registrations and scoring on the day.

The Play

5 players tied on 10 strokes escaped a group photo thanks to Timo Karonen’s Most Strokes of 11 but joining him for the skirt photo were Andrew Shaw, Andy Briston, Bill Lloyd, Graham Parsonage, Jari Antikainen, Paul Robertson and Stuart Bennett.

2 two-way tie on Monster Putter with newcomers Paul Robertson and Kwang Sik Kim needing some more practise on Cengkareng’s smooth greens. First Par for Handicaps>=30 went to Cory Packard whilst James Ross took home Most Improved. Recovering his fine with 1st Sandy was Andy Briston with 1st Birdie being secured by Doug McQuater.

Principal Fringe dweller for a second week was Petri Lahdekorpi whilst Tim Knight was our double winner on the day for both NTP and Low Gross. Long Drive Men went to Lorenzo Marengo whilst both ladies playing conspired to miss the fairway leaving that prize unclaimed.

Low Net winners on the day were Simon Reynolds, Leon Bivolaru and Stefan Thiele whilst taking home the Monthly Medal for the first time was Tribhuvan Singh.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Form_ Current Results 26-01-20

In addition to being the first Monthly Medal of 2020, this week will also be the 1st round of Cycle XII of the Tee Set Eclectic.
