Sunday 19th January 2020 Riverside

The Day

Although not far down the Jagorawi Toll, we were back at Riverside early in the year due to us getting rained out during our December visit. Still being the heart of the rainy season, there was a lot of second guessing on this scheduling but we need not have worried as we arrived to a perfectly dry, sunny “made for golfing” day and to a golf course in top condition after being refreshed by recent rains. With a mini shot-gun start arranged for our group, we could all complete our rounds in good time to enable the prize giving to be completed by just after 5pm. Topping the day off was a smooth trip home up the toll.

We had 4 newcomers amongst our 41 players with a warm Tee Set welcome being given to Stuart Bennett, Chang Hyun Park, Peter Casement and Shouichi Nishimura. Notable welcome backs to Ronald Hioka after 63 weeks and Petri Lahdekorpi and Fitrat Ameer after 22 weeks.

Sunday saw plenty of refreshments shared with Ronald kindly bringing 3 cases of water for us to use on the course and Jeff Durham emptying the contents of his liquor cabinet as Sunday was his expected last day at Tee Set before returning home to live. Jeff made a short speech to those assembled and was thanked by the Committee for his contributions and support to Tee Set over the years.

Whilst everything went fairly smoothly on Sunday, the gloss on the day was sadly taken off with an untimely reminder that golf can be dangerous if due care is not taken for the other players around you when playing your shot or if something goes accidentally awry with the intended swing. Our fingers are crossed that there is no lasting effects and best wishes for a full and speedy recovery to Dave. Thanks to Keith for helping to look after him en route to the ER.

Thank you to Beby for doing the registrations and scoring on the day and photos are here.

The Play

With some tricky holes, a large score is always possible at Riverside and a log jam on 10 strokes saw 5 players relieved that Peter Casement and Ric Wymer shot 11 strokes on a hole to share Most Strokes. 5 skirts on the day shared by Dan Javier, James Bristow, Mark Johnson, Shouichi Nishimori and Weera Limjirakajorn.

Weera, First Par handicaps >=30, and Shouichi, Most Improved, were both up again to recover their fines. Petri Lahdekorpi was our master of the flat stick this week as Low Putter.

Fast out the gate were Richard Mau and Jari Antikainen taking 1st Birdie and First Sandy on their opening holes, respectively whilst steady all the way round was Low Gross winner, Fitrat Ameer.

Some good scores returned on the day with 8 players at or better than net par. Top of the grades were Andy Briston, Craig Edwards on a count-back from Mike Webb and Harry Lopez on a count-back from Tribhuvan Singh.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Riverside results 19-01-20

2020 Tee Set Match-Play Championship

A thank you firstly to our Match-Play Supremo, James Ross, who has stepped up again to manage the 2020 Match-Play Championship. Participants will be playing for the Ric Wymer Match-Play Trophy presently held by President Roger Finnie.

The 2020 Tee Set Match-Play Championship is now open for registrations and sign ups will close on Sunday 26th January 2020 after our January monthly medal at Cengkareng. All entrants are guaranteed at least 2 matches in the competition which will follow the format and rules as per 2019. We will hold the drawing for the bracket placement round on Sunday, 26th January 2020 and games will then be scheduled to be completed in an approximately 4-5 week cycle such that the final can be completed by the end of October 2020 and the Champion for the year recognized in the Tee Set Championships as usual.

Everyone is welcome to join and please submit your details on the form here to join the competition. We will also be happy to slot in any late sign-ups but depending upon when you sign-up this may be directly to the knock-out bracket.

Next Up: Cengkareng Monthly Medal and Eclectic XII First Round Sunday 26th January 2020 12pm tee off

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2020.

In addition to being the first Monthly Medal of 2020, this week will also be the 1st round of Cycle XII of the Tee Set Eclectic.

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual and the green fee will be advise asap as we await the new pricing – not expected to be significantly different to last years amount of Rp850,000.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng has available a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts

Next Up: Sunday 19th January 2020 Riverside

Riverside

This Sunday we take the short trip down to Junction 19 on the Jagorawi toll to visit Riverside. This Greg Norman designed course is always one of the most interesting challenges on the Tee Set schedule with the Shark’s trademark optical illusions regularly fooling the unwary. In addition to playing the excellent layout which is normally in great condition, we are also well looked after by the team at Riverside all making for a great day out on the golf course.

To join us for the fun of one of Jakarta’s finest courses on Sunday just sign up here as usual. Green fees of Rp800,000 with a tee time of 11.30pm: anyone who still holds a rain-check voucher from the game which was interrupted by the storms on 22nd December may use it this week and the cost will then be Rp415,000.

Sunday 12th January 2020 Padang Modern

The Day

Fresh from completing his first Fun Run event in Jakarta with fellow Tee Setter Mike Ha and team mates from Dungeon X, President Roger Finnie was in situ very early to welcome the rest of the 33 Tee Setters who turned out to Padang Modern this week for our second game of 2020. Whilst this, along with VP Bill Lloyd’s ensemble were both note-worthy in their own right, pride of place this week goes to the Landau family for which 3 generations turned out on Sunday – perhaps the first occasion for us to welcome 3 generations of one family at an event. Very proud Grandpa Mike, visiting Jakarta and returning to Tee Set after 176 weeks was joined by son Jeff and grandson Dillon, who was out for his first round with Tee Set.

Although the rain had been heavy in the week, we were to enjoy a very warm and dry day with the gentle breeze being just enough to ensure careful club selection was needed. The course itself showed a few signs of the wet weather it had endured in recent days but overall, the ball rolled well and the greens retained most of their usual quickness for those trying to bump and run around them. The morning’s bookings were quiet so we were able to head out ahead of the scheduled tee time and the first groups were back in the clubhouse well before 4pm after a smooth, traffic free round.

In addition to Dillon Landau, we gave warm Tee Set welcomes to newcomers Kelsey Tanabe and JP Salgado. Joining Mike Landau in this weeks welcome backs were Stefan Thiele after 53 weeks and Andy Vincent, Gimmy Panata, Jaturaporn Pibankul and Banphot Wongvisava, all after 34 weeks.

Thank you to Beby who managed the registrations and scoring and photos of the day can be found here.

The Play

Whilst the conditions were quite favourable, the overall challenge which Modern presents, particularly when not completely dry and rolling fast on the fairways, was reflected in the fact that only 1 player was able to beat their handicap on the day. With VP Ric Wymer having omitted the Tee Set bag from his packing this morning, our fine winners were spared the dress up accessories on the day but not the pleasure of being recognized in the prize-giving. 7 skirts were secured on the day shared between Axel Hertzke, Jaturaporn Pibankul, JP Salgado, Kelsey Tanabe, Matthias Coessens, Michael Mueller and Michael SeabrookKelsey was back for Monster Putter while Most Strokes was awarded to Banphot Wongvisava.

First Par for Handicaps >=30 went to Michael Seabrook whilst Tom Grace took home Most Improved. First Sandy went to Geary Bowles and First Birdie to Andy Vincent. Low Putts was secured by Roger Finnie

Low Gross on the day was awarded to Tim Knight whilst Richard Mau, Lis Wymer and Timo Karonen (on a count-back from Michael Seabrook) took home our Low Net honours. After narrowly missing out on Saturday, Lis’s round also saw her bounce back to secure the Wymer Family Cup for this week….

Congratulations to all our winners on the day and detailed results can be seen here: Form_ Current Results Modern 12-01-20

Next Up Padang Modern Sunday 12th January 2020 12pm

With several of our desired visits in 2019 clashing with other events at the course, we have not visited Modern in a few months. With no tournaments planned on the same date and the rainy season in full swing making the west side more attractive weather wise, we have booked to come back to Padang Modern this week, a former home for our monthly medal. We are generally well looked after and have an enjoyable round making it a relaxed day out.

Tee time is confirmed for 12.00pm and the cost including cart is Rp870,000. If you are interested to join us please sign up here to register.

2020 Tee Set Charity Drive

In 2019 Tee Set members donated over 160kg of unwanted clothes which went to support the relief efforts in Palu and Lombok helping those affected by the earthquakes which badly hit those regions. For the current year, we would like to launch a new effort, appropriately named Tee Set Vision 20/20.

Like your President, I am sure many of you have old glasses and/or outdated prescriptions which are lying in your drawers at home. We will be happy to collect these from you over the next few months and once we have a sizable collection, we will distribute them amongst the poor and needy where they can make a difference to the quality of life for many. Please bring them along to any Tee Set game and pass them to any committee members to add to the collection. If you know the actual prescription please put a small note in the glasses box or on the frames – if not we’ll sort it out! Thank you in advance for your contributions to this worthy effort.

Handicaps: New E-mail Address for Scorecards

Just a reminder to send all scorecards for handicaps to our new address dedicated for this purpose: teesetcards@gmail.com.

Scorecards submitted to the Tee Set account or handed over to the Secretary/Committee on a Sunday afternoon will still be processed but it may not be as quick.

Sunday 5th January 2020 Gading Raya

The Day

A healthy sign up sheet this week did not translate into quite the turnout expected as a variety of ailments, family commitments and a not unsubstantial amount of rain overnight on Saturday all conspired to cull our numbers. However a keen and eager group of 24 Tee Setters made it to Gading Raya and were rewarded with a relatively dry day as the rains stopped just as the planned tee time arrived –  greatly assisted by the purchase of a new rain jacket by one of our contingent in the pro shop on arrival. The morning rain brought the added benefits of a cool golfing day and a quiet course meaning we could get out early and enjoy a relaxed round.

Popular amongst the regulars, we unusually had no new comers and no notable welcome backs either this week so just a final comment on the day to thank our Secretary Beby and VP Ric Wymer for managing all the registrations, scoring and presentations.

The Play

With the usually faster greens slowed by the rains and a couple of errant drives finding just enough roll on the fairways, our Treasurer needed to be content with just the 2 fines for Most Strokes shared by Karan Khetan and Michael Mueller. Repeating the prize for first Par Handicaps >= 30 from last week but avoiding the fines this week saw Kim Pham claim her full reward whilst Karan was able to off set his fine with Most Improved.

First Birdie was claimed on the opening hole by Matthew Makarenko whilst Low Putts went to Jeff Landau and Low Gross to Richard Mau.

After shooting a net 77 on his last visit to Gading Raya, Graham Parsonage extracted some measure of revenge shooting a Gross 77 this week to lead all comers and was joined in our Low Net winner category by Juju Juhaeriah (on a count-back from Jochen Overberg and Andy Coop) and Jari Antikainen.

Congratulations to all our winners. Detailed results of the day are here: Gading Raya 050120 results and photos here.

Up Next: Gading Raya 5th January 2020

Having also kicked-off the new Tee Set year at Gading Raya, we have decided to minimize the risks of rain interruptions by staying on the west side of Jakarta for the New Year and therefore return there to visit one of our more popular courses. In addition to being close to many Tee Setters’ homes, the Gading Raya team make a good effort to look after us and thus it is a pleasure to go back for another round there.

Tee times off 1 & 10 at 11.30am have been confirmed along with the attractive pricing of Rp850,000 with carts. If you are able to join us please sign up here and we look forward to seeing all who can make it on Sunday

Handicaps: New E-mail Address for Scorecards

In 2019 we merged our handicap process with D.O.G.S. and this has been a positive development in getting more rounds played by the respective memberships entered into a single handicap system thanks to the efforts of the Committees of both Societies. We have also seen an uptick in the number of scorecards being submitted, as they all should be, for games played outside of the regular events hosted by the 2 societies. Thank you all for this effort to ensure we have the most accurate and update handicaps available for both sets of members.

It has of course also meant an increase in the number of emails being received to the regular Tee Set email account. To better manage those related solely to scorecards being submitted, we have set up a dedicated email for this purpose: teesetcards@gmail.com.

Please can future scorecards you are sending be submitted to this account going forward. Scorecards submitted to the Tee Set account or handed over to the Secretary/Committee on a Sunday afternoon will still be processed but it may not be as quick.

Whilst on the subject of handicaps…. As many of you are aware, the new global handicap system is being rolled out in 2020. It is not a one-shot exercise but a progressive roll-out where-by those unions, USGA and Australia Golf notably, which are already broadly in line with the new system will change over early in 2020 and those for which it is a more extensive process of change, notably the UK unions under the current CONGU system, will change over later in the year – around November from the latest announcements by the R&A.

Our handicap system provider, under the USGA system, has advised that the 2020 module will be compliant to the World Handicap System and so when we roll over to the new module, usually January each year, our handicaps will be recalculated under this new rules. The only major change which will be notable for us is that the handicap will become the average of the best 8 cards versus best 10 presently (for those with 20 counting cards) and handicaps will tighten slightly as a result.

There are also administrative caps on how quickly a handicap can rise and adjustments on the daily playing conditions which may impact the overall results of the group on a particular day versus the standard ratings for the course. These will be handled within the system and therefore require no additional work on our part. We do not know when other Societies and Clubs will change over but we expect it to be sooner rather than later since all largely follow the USGA process for which the January transition is slated.

Festive Golf

A Happy New Year to all Tee Setters and best wishes to you and your families for a healthy, prosperous and golf filled 2020. For those on Deemples, the games are posted there too under the T-Drivers account.

Sunday 29th December 2019 BSD

The Day

Sunday was our final game of 2019 and although most Tee Setters were away making the most of the extended holiday period, we welcomed a keen and happy group of 22 players for our visit to BSD. Morning showers gave us a little concern about being able to finish our round uninterrupted from the weather again this week but our concerns were to unnecessary as we had perfect weather for our day’s golf and evening soiree.

The starter got us out as the first groups in the afternoon schedule and with an empty course ahead of us, we whizzed round to be all finished at an unheard of, 3.50pm; prize-giving and all! The course itself was in great shape after a few weeks of rain and with the greens receptive, there were several very good scores returned on the day as can be read below.

A warm welcome to Christopher Berg and Drew Franklin, holiday visitors to Jakarta who came out and joined us on Sunday. Warm welcome backs to David Collecot after 79 weeks and David O’Shea and Ryan McPhee after 40 weeks.

With an early finish and the promise of some Tee Set refreshments on offer, most of the group retired to the restaurant to help Mark Johnson celebrate his birthday and to enjoy a pleasant and relaxed finish to the golfing year.

Many thanks to VP Ric Wymer for managing all the scoring on the day. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

Heading a list of good gross scores this week was Simon Reynolds after his impressive 75 on the day. Grand Master of the flat stick this week was a very happy Jochen Overberg whilst Christopher Berg collected First Birdie.

First Sandy went to Roger Finnie and our Low Net winners were Axel Hertzke, David O’Shea and Tan Chee Hua. No skirts today but our big prize getter of the day was Kim Pham who collected Most Improved and First Par Handicaps >=30 which were offset by Most Strokes and Monster Putter – the one prize/one fine rule resulting in a net gain of Rp50k only…

Sunday 22nd December 2019 Riverside

The Day

Our pre-Christmas 2BBB stableford event hosted with members from the Djakarta Old Golfing Society and Pocksia has, over the last 3 years, become a popular event on the calendar. On Sunday we had 26 golfers turn-up in good time for our 11.30am shot-gun start and put their names into the “hat” for the blind draw pairings.

Freshly rediscovered in the dark recesses of the garage after being MIA for 3 years, the Christmas hats made a reappearance and were put into active service for the pre-tee off group photos.

President Roger Finnie and Mark Johnson then conducted the team blind draw which threw up some strong and interesting pairings. Teams and starting holes sorted, we headed to the starter hut for our shot-gun start under bright sunshine, with the gentle breeze making its best efforts to keep us cool amongst the humidity coming from the course which was drying off from the previous nights rain.

With no-one in front of us we were all making good time and returning some excellent scores up to the turn, many teams being 4-6 strokes under par. However, as most teams reached their 9th or 10th hole, a large lightening storm followed by heavy rains hit the course quite suddenly. This pushed us into the storm shelters or half way house where, after drinking the hut dry, it was decided that the storms would not abate soon enough for us to complete the game and so the round was abandoned.

All showered and with no prize giving to conduct, we used the day’s prize fund to purchase several buckets of refreshments which were enjoyed by everyone as we chatted the rest of the afternoon away. A huge thank you to Riverside management for their generous offer of a rain check to everyone present so that we could all come back on a, hopefully, drier day.
