Next Up: Jagorawi Sunday 20th October 2019

With JIL having moved to Riverside this season, we have not had a visit to Jagorawi in recent months. This week we get to change this and look forward to playing the excellent but tricky golfing challenge of the New Course where you really need to think through many of your shots, particularly off the tee.

Tee time is 12.30pm officially but we are expecting to get off a little earlier and possibly with a shot-gun start so we ask all of you to be at the course before 12pm please.

We will play white tees this week for men and if you are interested to join us please sign up here. Price is Rp950k with carts.

Sunday 13th October 2019

The Day

Sunday was the second of our rearranged weeks this month and the value of signing up early and reading carefully the Tee Set blogs was demonstrated by some plaintive cries from Riverside where a couple of our members had headed in error only to find we were not there this week. Nevertheless, 29 Tee Setters turned up at Gading Raya to enjoy a relaxed round and were well looked after as usual by the team there.

Overall the course was in good nick, especially the greens where some of our fringe dwellers were to enjoy a good day with their putting stats! Kudos to Richard Mau who joined us after a morning round and thank you Mike Webb & Shawn Berg who brought along a couple of newcomers and help sell some Tee Set shirts. Thank you also to Bill LLoyd and Geoff Thwaites who coordinated to help us supply a left handed set of clubs to one of our newcomers.

4 newcomers this week and a warm Tee Set welcome to Jay Kim, Djamel Derguini, Markus Karonen and Matthew Makarenko.  Back for their annual visit and therefore 50 weeks between rounds were Anna and Frank Wilson and we had another warm welcome back to Cory Packard after 20 weeks.

Many thanks to Jens Roestel and Lis Wymer for assisting VP Ric Wymer with the scoring and presentations. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

With the greens in good condition there was no Monster Putter on the day but despite the fast fairways, a couple of players did manage to pull up on their drives before the red tees meaning we welcomed Mike Webb and Cory Packard up for the Skirt photo. Cory did get his revenge with an eagle on his 1oth hole whilst the Treasurer had a field day with a 4-way tie for Most Strokes of 9 shared between Albert Arcenas, Zander Watt, Arnold Castillon and Bill Lloyd.

First Par for Handicaps =>30 went to Timo Karonen, whilst Ezra Alexander was our Most Improved and newcomer, Djamel Derguini won First Sandy. First Birdie went to Marcelo De Jesus.

Paul Daud took home Low Putts whilst our Low Gross was the returning Frank Wilson with an excellent 82 off the stick. Low Net winners saw Michal Lubasik up for the second week in a row where he was joined by Jens Roestel and Jochen Overberg.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Gading Raya Results131019

2019 Tee Set Match Play Final

With 2018 Champion Jens Roestel on hand to support the finalists, Tee Set Inter-League Captain Simon Oxley and President Roger Finnie were back this week to battle out round 2 of the Match Play Final after last week’s draw.

Early skirmishes saw Roger take a 2 up lead which by the turn had grown to 4 up but a thrilling run of pars and birdies on the back 9 saw Simon pull himself back to only 1 down by the time they reached hole 16. An exchange of birdies on 16 and 17 saw the pair head down the 18th with Roger still 1 up and visions of a repeat of last week’s draw in both players minds. However, this week a steady par on the last saw Roger take the Ric Wymer Trophy with a 2up win.  Commiserations to our losing finalist, Simon Oxley and congratulations to both players for a well played match which ultimately took 36 holes to settle.

At the prize giving, our winner, Roger Finnie, was presented the Ric Wymer Match Play Trophy by the man himself and 2018’s champion.

The Day

Sunday was a rearranged game having advanced our visit to the challenging Riverside course by a week after Emeralda were unable to confirm a suitable time for our scheduled visit there.

A thank you to GM Peng Siong and the team at Riverside for making sure we had an enjoyable visit with the course in excellent condition and the bright sunshine ensuring we had a great day on the fast fairways and greens.

Our mini shot gun start saw the 29 Tee Setters head out as scheduled at 12pm and steady progress saw us finish in good time albeit sadly having lost a couple of our contingent to illness part of the way round. Hope you are feeling better today guys.!

5 newcomers this week and a warm Tee Set welcome was given to Richard Berg, Timo Landgren, Tapio Jarvenpaa, Warut Waramit ad Leith Day. A warm welcome back to Dan Brod after 2 years and Michal Lukasik after 4 months.

Many thanks to VP Ric Wymer for managing all the registrations and scoring with the President being somewhat distracted with the Match Play final and to Lis Wymer for her assistance in the prize giving. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

With the course playing fast those hitting it straight got some good roll but anything wayward would be punished by some tricky holes and unforgiving bushes along side the fairways. The challenge Riverside presents was seen in the results where only 4 players beat net par this week.

The fast fairways were not enough to help our lone skirt on the day with Michael Mueller relishing his time in the spotlight once all dressed up. No Monster putter this week with the greens playing so well but Most Strokes was picked up by newcomer, Warut Waramit. Warut was to recover his fine however with Most Improved.

First Sandy went to Samret Raungrit and First Birdie to Joseph D’Cruz whilst Low Putts went to Christine Lie.

First Par handicaps => 30 went to Mike Riley whilst GM Peng Siong took home Low Gross. Low Net honours went to Roger Finnie, Arnold Castillon and Michal Lukasik although an initial input error saw Michael Mueller stepping up for the photo – I trust you sorted out the beers gentlemen later on :- ) but in the meantime a quick edit of the photo to ensure we have the right faces in the picture….

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Results riverside 061019

Next Up: Riverside Sunday 6th October 2019 12pm

Riverside

A change to our advertised schedule has been forced upon us as Emeralda are unable to confirm a tee time for us next Sunday due to a large competition on that morning. With Inter-League also being postponed the following week, we have therefore decided to head a week early back to Riverside to enjoy this excellent but challenging Greg Norman design.

Visually stunning off the tee boxes, the trademark optical illusions of the Shark’s designs can fool the unwary but the good service and facilities ensure we can all have a nice day out.

To join us for the excellent value of Rp775,000 with a mini-shotgun start at 12.00pm please sign up here.

Sunday 29th September 2019 Cengkareng

The Day

The excellent hospitality, cold margaritas and the opportunity to play one of Jakarta’s nicest and friendliest courses made for an attractive offer this week as we headed out as usual to Cengkareng on the last Sunday of the month. A few late cancellations saw 32 Tee Setters arrive for our Monthly Medal, round 2 of Cycle XI of the Eclectic, to witness the presentation of the Tee Set Match-Play Championship and generally to enjoy a round with friends under bright sunny skies with a gentle breeze blowing to keep things interesting.

2017 Match-Play Champion Jari Antikainen took the opportunity to lay his hands on the Ric Wymer Cup one more time capturing a great photo in front the 18th green before the round.

4 newcomers this week with a warm Tee Set welcome to Wayne Rideout, Dave Barnes, Michael Ha and Jeremy Halma. Some long welcome backs also headed by Weera Limjirakajorn after 66 weeks followed not too far behind for Minoj Mishra and Chris Cromarty who were 1 year between games.

Many thanks to our Secretary on the day, Brenda Mayland and VP Ric Wymer for managing all the registrations and scoring.

Lots of photos this week too so check them out here.

The Play

After a pre-match photo with VP Ric Wymer and his eponymous Cup , our finalists Simon Oxley and Roger Finnie were unable to separate themselves over 18 holes in the Tee Set Match-Play final. Neither managed to get more than 1 hole up and the lead changed on 12 occasions as both players put aside a nervy start to shoot back 9’s of 38 strokes to finish all square. With 6 weeks to go before the final winner must be determined, they have decided to to do it all again over 18 holes at the next Tee Set event.

Whilst our protagonists were reliving the final, we carried on with the rest of the presentations which as usual started with the skirts; 3 on the day with Amol Singhal, Shawn Berg and Andrew Shaw all being called up for the photo. Weera Limjirakajorn was our Monster Putter and Richard D’Cruz had Most Strokes in our other fines on the day.

A tie for First Par Handicaps >=30 saw Timo Karonen and Indar Dhaliwal both awarded the prize with Matt Otto taking Most Improved. Low Putts also resulted in a tie with Mark Johnson and Joseph D’Cruz being our awardees on the day.

First Birdie went to Chris Cromarty, First Sandy Andy Briston and Low Gross to Wayne Rideout.

Our net winners on the day were Chris Cromarty, Matt McGowan and Andrew Shaw (Matt Otto losing on a count-back but standing up to collect on his behalf..)

On the Monthly Medal prizes, Long Drive went to Manoj Mishra and Nearest the Pin to Matt Otto.

Our Monthly Medalist for September with an excellent 43 points despite wiping the last was Tom Grace.

Congratulations to all our winners on the day and detailed scores are here: Form_ Current Results for CGK 29 Sep 19

Next Up: Cengkareng Sunday 29th September Monthly Medal

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2019.

In addition to being the 9th Monthly Medal of 2019, this week will also be the 2nd round of Cycle XI of the Tee Set Eclectic. With Cycle X winner, Matthew Powell, having departed Jakarta, we will definitely have a new winner: will it be another new name on the Trophy or will one of our past Champions rise to the occasion again.?

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp850,000 walking please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual.

Sunday will see the final of the Tee Set Match Play Championship being played with either Inter-League Captain, Simon Oxley, or President, Roger Finnie, being crowned as the 2019 Champion. The winner will also be the recipient of the Ric Wymer Trophy presently held by 2018 champion, Jens Roestel.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng has available a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts

Sunday 22nd September 2019 Padang Modern

The Day

A quiet day at Modern with a few late cancellations and other events elsewhere on Sunday seeing just 4 flights heading out for our weekly event. With the starter getting us off bang on time and placing the other groups opposite to us, we were to enjoy a quick round under bright sunny skies.

Play was finished by just after 4pm and with the small numbers, we were all completed with the scoring by 4.30pm. This left us plenty of time to celebrate with our 2 birthday boys, Geoff Thwaites and Jeff Durham before heading home in time to catch which-ever sporting event was the preferred flavour on what was a busy Sunday evening of events.

Rafa Hussein was our sole newcomer on the day and he was given a warm Tee Set welcome. Welcome backs to Richard D’Cruz and father Joseph D’Cruz along with Jochen Overberg, Pieter Nielen-Groen and Matt McGowan.

14 players made it to the results sheet with just Tan Chee Hwa failing to get a mention at the end of the day; so you are note left out Tan 🙂 ….

Some winners were also fined with our sole skirt on the day, Pieter Nielen-Groen taking home first Birdie and Most Strokes awardee Geoff Thwaites also winning First Sandy. Geoff was joined by Jari Antikainen, Jochen Overberg and Timo Karonen for Most Strokes. Completing the fines was Richard D’Cruz who had trouble on the greens and thus was awarded Monster Putter.

Not to be out-done by his playing partner, our other birthday boy, Jeff Durham celebrated winning Most Improved. VP Ric Wymer’s hot putter saw him take home Low Putts whilst Roger Finnie won Low Gross. Our Low Net winners on the day were Simon Reynolds, Joseph D’ Cruz and Laurie O’Connor.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results can be found here: Form_ Current Results modern220919

Next Up: Monthly Medal Cengkareng Sunday 29th September 2019
