Sunday 11th August 2019 Pondok Cabe

The Day

After the semi-organized chaos which was our birthday bash at Matoa, we moved a short way west around South Jakarta to visit Pondok Cabe this week. Never many frills, the course and the staff always deliver a good value for money experience and with a flurry of late sign-ups we ended up with 27 Tee Setters turning out to join us this week. Sunday being a holiday meant the roads were much quieter than normal so everyone was signed up in good time to be ready to head out when the cashier’s system allowed us to pay for the afternoon rate.

With little to disturb the sleeping cats in the clubhouse and the course being equally quiet, we were round in very good time under bright sunshine. All groups were in by 4pm and with presentations done by 4.30pm we were able to enjoy some refreshments and still head out in good time for an early trip home.

This week we welcomed 2 father and son pairings with long time Tee Set member Peter Bosterli, back after 2 1/2 years, bringing his son Lucas and Tim Henssen bringing Ruben, both sons playing their first games with Tee Set. Our other notable welcome back was Richard Green after 48 weeks. We hope to see you all out again soon.

Thank you to Ric Wymer for managing the scoring and prize giving on the day and the photos can be found here.

The Play

Rubbing his hands with glee at the thought of a 12-way tie for Most Strokes, the Treasurer eventually had to be content with just a tie of 2 as our Skirt winner, Michael Seabrook, and our Monster Putter, Oliver Fritz, shared this prize.

Most Improved went to new-comer Ruben Henssen whist Roger Finnie won First Sandy and Michael Mueller First Birdie, Michael benefiting from our 1-prize rule.

Master of the flat stick was James Ross whilst Richard Mau turned in the best score of the day to win Low Gross. Low Net honours on the day went to Simon Oxley, Richard Green and Lis Wymer.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Form_ Current Results pondok cabe 11819

Next Up: Pondok Cabe 11th August 2019 11.30am

Sandwiched between the 36th Anniversary scramble and the Tee Set World Cup events, this week we take the relatively short drive south to Pondok Cabe for a regular Sunday event.

The straight-forward layout and relaxed atmosphere is perfect for a pleasant stroll around the fairways and the usually quick round should see everyone free to enjoy some refreshments after the round and not be too late returning home.

Tee time is 11.30am and the price is Rp600,000 walking or Rp712,500 with a shared cart. Please sign up here if you are interested to join us.

Note: for the keen watchers of the schedule we had planned a BBQ afterwards but due to competing requirements on Sunday, we will need to reschedule this social event to another week-end.

Tee Set Anniversary Scramble 4th August 2019

Matoa Nasional

An excellent turnout on the day with 91 players joining us at a hot and very dry Matoa Nasional for the celebration of Tee Set’s 36th Anniversary. We held our now traditional annual scramble event for the Birthday Bash which also makes it a good opportunity to welcome some new players as well as teams from the other Societies with whom we play across the year. This year we had 17 newcomers and teams entered from Sentul Swingers, DOGS, T-Drivers, Tin Cups and Pocksia, making it one of our more successful celebrations; thank you all for the support and we hope you enjoyed the day.

The day was well supported by our sponsors and our support teams with a huge thank you to Hot Hed, Asia Serv, JS Luwansa Hotel, PT Delta (Anker), Matoa Nasional, Jeff Durham, Asian Tigers, Cengkareng and Riverside for their contributions to the event and to Brenda, Ric, Bill, Keith, Aisha & The Star Deli Team and all the Matoa staff for helping to make the day pass smoothly.

The day itself went with few hiccups; registrations were well arranged by Matoa, Brenda and Ric and for once, few changes to teams as almost everyone registered turned up and in good time. We were therefore able to take the group photo just before 12pm and head out onto the course a little ahead of schedule. The weather was sunny all day, course itself very dry and with the greens being in good condition, many low scores were returned on the day.

As usual we had our mix of novelty holes and it was interesting to see the different strategies with the pool cues on 18th Hole. Several birdies on the hole indicated we have some sharks amongst us…

After the play, we all headed upstairs to the function room for some refreshments and to enjoy a nice social late afternoon whilst all the prize presentations were held.

The Presentations

President Roger Finnie opened the presentations by welcoming everyone to the Anniversary Event and thanking our sponsors, the team at Matoa and the Tee Set committee members and all the volunteers who had all contributed to making the day special.

A warm welcome to their first Tee Set event was extended to John & Sarah Brown, CK Algie, Aleksi Tiihonen, Andrew Bradley, Bernaud Stuckart, Billy Variava, Fuad Abu, Jason Millsm Ken Dalrymple, Lee Barnes, Oliver Fritz, Risky Fabriyando, Stuart Grinton,, Satya Santoso, Tapio Javenpaa and Timo Karonen – apologies if we missed someone. Welcome backs with over 100 weeks included Tim Supple, Iris Rothenberg, Mark Souders, Nenden Fleischman and Bob McLeod. We hope to see you all back soon.

The Singing President Craig Ewers then shared a few words on the history of and his own connections to Tee Set before long time member, Past President and sponsor Jack Calcote was asked to raise a toast to absent friends. A few words by various Tee Setters who knew them best were said for Ivan Byriel, Jack Sandford, Big Rob and Clive Bissel who all passed away during the year.

Before moving onto the prizes for the day, we had our cutting of the cake for which Tom Grace, celebrating his birthday last week, was called up to be serenaded by The Singing President. We also conducted our lucky door prize draws whilst our photographer of the day, Keith Miller snapped away to ensure we captured everything for prosperity.

Last player teeing off on hole 4, Ken Dalrymple, was our closest to the pin – almost winning the year’s membership sponsored by Matoa. Impressive with the 1980’s drivers were the 2 SB’s: Sarah Brown and Shawn Berg, both of whom hit impressive drives with throw-back clubs. The President did note that the grips also looked like they were put on in 1983 and maybe we would think about investing in new grips for next year. Our iron-players, anchoring their teams off the tee, were King Tirto, Rob Nichols and CK Algie for handicaps >=30 and Dave Prosser for the lower handicaps.

We then invited HOGS to come forward and say a few words on the great work they do supporting Cleft Palate operations here before presenting them with a cheque of Rp10 juta on behalf of all Tee Set members. A further whip round with the hat raised another Rp6.7 juta for which a huge thanks was given to all by the HOGS team.

Our main prize winners were then recognized with Low Gross going to Kenny & the Vets (62): Howard Short, Ken Dalrymple, Andrew Bradley and Bob McLeod. Also shooting 62 but securing 3rd place net was team Koach Ken’s Kids: Bill Lloyd, Ken Runyon, Shawn Berg and Richard Mau. The Raht Pack team of Jari Rahtu, Jari Antikainen, Tapio Jarvenpaa and Timo Karonen were our runners-up whilst the last team entered was best dressed with Daylight Robbers: Rob Algie, CK Algie, Rob McAuley and Jason Mills being our winners on the day.

With all the thank you’s, prize draws and presentations done and dusted, we turned up the music and enjoyed the rest of the evening finishing off the various refreshments remaining in the eskys. See you all next year for our 37th Anniversary.!!

Sunday 4th August 2019 Tee Set 36th Anniversary Scramble Matoa Nasional

With Jakarta undergoing a power blackout on Sunday, the 91 players and many event supporters experienced few interruptions from the outside world as we enjoyed a very successful celebration of Tee Set’s 36th Anniversary. However, it has also meant that collating all the photos and reports on the day are a little delayed and so the write up will follow a little later in the week.

In the interim, a huge thank you to everyone who turned up on the day, our sponsors, our helpers and all the Matoa staff who collectively ensured the day went off smoothly.

Sunday 28th July 2019 Cengkareng Monthly Medal

The Day

A bright sunny day welcomed 38 Tee Setters to Cengkareng for our July Monthly Medal and with the traffic being relatively light for most players, plenty of us arrived a little ahead of plans which gave us time to enjoy the excellent service and relaxed atmosphere of the club house or to have a gentle stretch and warm up ahead of the round.

Although the tee boxes were a little busy for the afternoon starters, we were to head off on time as usual and enjoyed a relatively untroubled and relaxed round with the firm fairways and smooth greens enabling those playing well to return some good scores reflected by 25% of players returning scores better than their handicaps on the day.

Sunday was the last round for a couple of our regular players over the last couple of years with both Matthew Powell (Calgary) and Chris Lever (Egypt) leaving us – for the time being – to pastures new. Both gave a small speech of thanks to the group and were kind enough to spend their last rupiah on a few jugs which were shared around. We wish you both bon voyage and hopefully see you back for your holidays soon.

Refreshing our ranks were 4 newcomers and a warm Tee Set welcome was given to Ezra Alexander, Jude Alexander (no relation), Paul Chenier and Tanta Tarigan. Welcome backs this week included Howard Short after an impressive 393 weeks and Zeno Barburia after 124 weeks. We hope to see you all out again soon.

Thank you to Brenda Mayland for managing all the sign-ups and scoring on the day and to VP Ric Wymer for the weekly registrations.

The Play

Our first presentation of the day was actually a hangover from last month with June’s Monthly Medal winner, Ronald Lim, being on hand to be presented with his medal and for us to capture of photo of him with the Trophy. Congratulations again Ronald.

As usual, we then went onto the fun awards and although we had no Monster Putter this week, we did capture 4 skirts with newcomer Jude Alexander being joined by Rakesh Surampudi, Andrew Shaw and Mike Riggs for the photo. Most Strokes went to Audie Kaunang and Most Improved to Roger Finnie.

Impressive though his double Sandy Par was, Mark Johnson was still to receive our regular reward for this skill prize along with Jude Alexander and Ronald Lim. First Birdie went to Ezra Alexander whilst Low Putts went to Tanta Tarigan and Low Gross to Tim Knight.

Our Low Net winners on the day were the departing Matthew Powell, Arnold Castillon and Rakesh Surampudi. For the Monthly Medal skill prizes, Long Drive went to Simon Reynolds and Nearest the Pin to Grant Lutz.

Our 7th Monthly Medalist for 2019 was Joe Callahan who returned 40 points to claim the shield for this month.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed results are here: Form_ Current Results for CGK 28 Jul 19

Tee Set Eclectic X

Heading into the final round, Eclectic VII winner, James Ross, had a small but important lead over a chasing pack headed by round 2 leader Matthew Powell. Whilst most of the chasing pack improved by 2 -3 strokes, James was unfortunate not convert an otherwise below handicap round into an improvement in his Eclectic score. As a result, Matthew Powell’s birdie on his last hole before departing Jakarta was enough to sneak him past James and take home the Trophy as our Eclectic X winner. Commiserations to James and congratulations to Matthew.

Our wait for a repeat winner goes on and with the board wiped clean, Eclectic XI will commence with August’s Monthly Medal round.

Tee Set Match Play

The last Quarter-final match was played on Sunday with Divya Prakash Ahuja defeating   Simon Reynolds  3&2.  Divya moves onto the Emas Bracket final to play Roger Finnie for a place in the final where the winner will square off against Kuning Bracket winner, Simon Oxley, for the Ric Wymer Match-Play Cup.

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2019.

In addition to being the 7th Monthly Medal of 2019, this week will also be the final round of Cycle X of the Tee Set Eclectic. If you are interested to see the leaderboard and/or your own scores, please check out the Eclectic page.

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

Sunday 21st July 2019 Gunung Geulis

The Day

With Tee Set making arrangements for a week-end at Gunung Guelis playing both courses and D.O.G.S. playing near-by at Rainbow Hills on Saturday, several Tee Setters took advantage to enjoy a relaxing evening in the Sentul area and a leisurely hop to the golf course on Sunday morning. The rest of our group obviously had a trouble free trip as we were all signed in and sitting on carts in good time to tee off on schedule.

The 2 courses at Gunung Geulis were both spectacular and challenging in their own ways. However, as was mentioned more than once during the week-end, it is so rare that every hole on a course is so picturesque so none of us minded finding them a little more of a challenge than usual. With the West course being relatively quiet on Sunday, the cool air and bright sunshine making conditions ideal on the fast running fairways, the day was certainly one to enjoy and despite some initial concerns for the journey home, the toll was also free running so we got home in good time once getting off the mountain.

3 new comers this week and we gave a warm Tee Set welcome to Christophe Beau, Ian Law and Phongthep. Welcome backs after 24 weeks to Nick Gleeson and 16 weeks to Peraphon.

Thank you to VP Bill Lloyd for coordinating the hotel arrangements for Saturday night and to VP Ric Wymer for managing all the scoring on the day; pictures of the day can be found here.

The Play

The challenges of the West course were reflected in the scoring with no one managing to hit handicap but this masked some excellent play nonetheless. Our Treasurer was happy to see some skirts for the first time in 3 weeks, so much so he was up for the photo with Ric Wymer being joined by newcomer Ian Law, Nick Gleeson, Zander Watt and Rakesh Surampudi. Rakesh also had Monster Putter whilst Andrew Shaw and Brett Shields shared Most Strokes.

Divya Ahjua had Low Putts and Mike Riggs was always in the money with a First Birdie on hole 1 as part of an outward gross 37. recovering his fine, Ian Law improved by 12 on the back 9 to take home Most Improved whist Tim Knight shot an impressive 34 coming home to win Low Gross.

Clearly in resort mode, Paul Daud and Bill Lloyd were split for the Low Net Winners photo by the mono-chrome shirted Roger Finnie.

Congratulations to all our winners and the detailed results can be found here: Form_ Current Results-Gunung Geulis

Tee Set Match-Play Championship

Sunday saw the Kuning Bracket final played with Simon Oxley winning 4&2 against Keith Gorman to proceed to the Match Play Championship Final where he awaits the winner of the Emas Bracket to play for the Ric Wymer Cup.

Next Up: Cengkareng Sunday 28th July Monthly Medal

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2019.

In addition to being the 7th Monthly Medal of 2019, this week will also be the final round of Cycle X of the Tee Set Eclectic. Will former Eclectic champion James Ross retain his lead and become our first 2-time winner or will someone else surge through to succeed Lorenzo Marengo as Champion.

If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp850,000 walking please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng management have purchased a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.

Sunday 14th July 2019 Imperial Golf Klub

The Day

Another oddly quiet Tee Set Sunday but the lower numbers did not detract from an otherwise great day as we headed west to play at Imperial Klub Golf. The roads were quiet and many of us arrived in good time to enjoy the excellent service in the Club House and/or practise facilities and unusually, the wedding fair which was occupying most of the seating area for the day.

With only 4 flights to arrange we were ready in good time and the starter took advantage of a gap in the field to get us off 10 minutes early which meant one of our players was still putting on golf shoes on the way to the 1st Tee whilst ensuring his food was delivered to the course too.

Once going, we had a smooth round under warm, bright but hazy skies and were all finished with scoring by just after 4.40pm. This fortunately coincided with a break in the wedding fair entertainment, allowing the prize giving to be completed without needing to compete with the music which had entertained us as we came off the course.

One new-comer this week and a warm Tee Set welcome to Mike Riggs and one notable welcome back to Tony Wood after 106 weeks. We hope to see you both out again soon.

Thanks you to VP Ric Wymer for managing the scoring on the day and pictures can be found here.

The Play

A firm course and benign conditions ensured we all had the opportunity to play well and there were some excellent results turned in on the day. For the second week in a row there were no skirts and despite the quicker greens, we all putted well or managed our fringe dwelling sufficiently to avoid any risks of a Monster Putter prize. Inescapable however is Most Strokes and Leon Bivolaru and Mike Riggs saved an otherwise log jam of players on 8 with their return of 9 on a hole to share this award. Mike won his money back with the only Sandy Par of the day and Keith Gorman came back an impressive 9 strokes better to win Most Improved.

First Birdie went to Simon Oxley with James Ross winning Low Putts whilst Roger Finnie picked up First Eagle and Low Gross on the day.

Only needing to finish as the only player in C grade this week, Jari Antikainen picked that Low Net award where he was joined by the in-form Graham Parsonage and the ever-green former President, Geoff Thwaites.

Congratulations to all our winners and the detailed results are here: Form_ Current Results Imperial

Tee Set Match Play Championship

The 3rd of 4 Quarter final matches was completed on Sunday with Keith Gorman riding his great back 9 to win 2Up against Matthew Powell. Keith moves onto the Kunning Bracket Final where he will play Simon Oxley for a place in the Final. On the other side of the draw, President Roger Finnie awaits the outcome of the remaining QF between Simon Reynolds and Divya Prakash Ahuja.
