Sunday 2nd June 2019 Rainbow Hills

The Day

With the longer holiday period than normal, a lot of Tee Setters were away travelling or otherwise busy preparing for next weeks family activities resulting in a very small gathering on Sunday at the excellent Rainbow Hills. Our numbers were further depleted by 5 no-shows who seemed to mostly have been up late watching the Euro final or golf based on the apologies received.

The smallness of our group was not to take away from a fun day played on an almost empty course which led to a fairly quick round albeit with one group caught in the late afternoon shower and choosing to enjoy a couple of beers in the shelter before finishing their round.

We did welcome 3 newcomers and a warm Tee Set welcome was given to Genyu Nakamura, Pepi Kurniawan and Volker Hamann. All purchased shirts on the day and so we were able to capture each of them resplendent in their new Tee Set livery.

Many thanks to VP Ric Wymer for his efforts in coordinating the day’s registrations and scoring and the pictures can be found here.

The Play

The smallness of our group  was also  reflected in a smaller than usual prize giving with 3 prizes not being claimed on the day. However, we did have a full collection of fines with Michal Lubasik claiming both Most Strokes and a skirt, where he was joined by Tom Grace, and with Pepi Kurniawan taking home Monster Putter.

Some impressive Most Improved this week and both Genyu Nakamura and Michal Lubasik were ultimately to receive this prize after a small miscalculation by the President. Low Gross was taken home by President Roger Finnie whilst Low Putts went to Volker Hamann.

As the only player in B grade this week Audie Kaunang was guaranteed the Low Net prize after finishing his round whilst Simon Oxley took home A grade’s Low Net. Happiest player on the day was Michael Mueller who shot a career best net 65 to claim Low Net C.

Congratulations to all our winners and the detailed scoring can be found here: Form_ Current Results rainbow

Sunday 26th May 2019 Rancamaya

The Day

Our now annual week-end trip to Rancamaya during Ramadan in conjunction with the D.O.G.S. is always a popular week-end. Many members of both societies come down for a full weekend to enjoy a practice round on Saturday, the Saturday night BBQ where 40 enjoyed a good evening and then the usual Sunday competitions held in parallel to a match-play game between the 2 societies. A big thank you to Mark Johnson for all the advance arrangements with the hotel, to John & Sarah Brown for coordinating the course bookings for both groups and to VP Ric Wymer for taking care of the Tee Set arrangements along with Lis Wymer and Brenda Mayland whilst the President was away.

As usual for the Bogor area, the weather gave us some threatening clouds but the day went off smoothly apart from a couple of our senior members suffering from something eaten the day before and not able to fully enjoy the day. We had an early start but got backed up a little on the front 9; after the turn the round went quickly and the prize giving was able to start in time to allow all of us to enjoy some food and drinks at the clubhouse afterwards before returning to Jakarta.

1 newcomer to welcome on the day and a warm Tee Set welcome to Cory Packard as well as notable welcome back to George Baptiste after 329 weeks, Richie Tiblani and 32 weeks and the newly repaired Tom Grace after 21 weeks.

In the match-play, D.O.G.S. edged Tee Set 5-3 to recover the trophy after a year’s hiatus and at the presentation a warm toast in memory of the inspiration behind the week-end, Juergen Degert, was raised. Congratulations to D.O.G.S. and a full week-end was best summed up by the picture captured here:

The Play

Last seen struggling on one hole, we were pleased to see Rudie Basson back in time to participate to the prize giving in being recognized for his Most Strokes of 16 on a hole. Only 1 skirt on the day as a rusty Tom Grace got to enjoy the dress up outfit to himself whilst Andrew Clydesdale and Joe Callahan both struggled on the recently cored greens and racked up 42 putts to share Monster Putter.

Most Improved was Matthias Coessens who was 12 strokes better on his second 9 whilst First Sandy and First Birdie went to Matt Otto and Fernando Gaggino, respectively

Low Putts went to Richie Tiblani who pipped 4 others on 29 putts with his 28 stroke effort on the day whilst Low Gross was won by Andrew Waite after an excellent 83. Our Low Net winners on the day were Shawn Berg, Eric Mary and Indar Dhaliwal.

Thank you to everyone who participated to the week-end; detailed results are here and photos here.

Sunday 19th May 2019 Cengkareng Monthly Medal

The Day

A healthy turnout of 40 Tee Setters for our monthly medal last Sunday which was being held 1 week early to avoid the heavy maintenance which occurs at this time of year on the greens. As usual, we were well looked after at Cengkareng and after teeing off as scheduled, we were to enjoy a clear round and good weather on the course. Play as a result went smoothly and most players were finished faster than normal such that we were all completed by just after 6pm; leaving plenty of time for several to relax and enjoy some refreshments in the club house after the prize giving.

4 newcomers this week and we gave a warm Tee Set welcome to Andrew Clydesdale, Gimmy Panata, Keith Erickson and Tae-Young Kim. Notable welcome backs to Gordon Anderson after 137 weeks, Banphot Wongvisavakorn (46 weeks) and Jaturaporn Pibankul (28 weeks). We look forward to welcoming you all again soon.

Thank you to Lis for helping to take some photos on the day and to Beby for managing all the scoring and results. Pictures of the day can be found here.

The Play

Some stellar play on the day but as usual we started our prize giving by topping up the Treasurer’s coffers. A slightly light return of 5 skirts awarded to Banphot Wongvisavakorn, Divya Prakash Ahuja, Jaturaporn Pibankul, Keith Erickson and Matt Otto was balanced by a 5-way tie for Most Strokes with Andrew Shaw, Gordon Anderson, Indar Dhaliwal and James Ross joining Banphot for the photo. Not complete, Banphot completed the trifecta of booby prizes after being tied with Dave Prosser for Monster Putter.

Both Gordon Anderson for Most Improved and Indar Dhaliwal for 1st par Handicaps >=30 were able to recover their fines. First Sandy went to Fernando Gaggino.

Newcomer Gimmy Panata led the way on the greens to win Low Putts whilst Tim Knight was Low Gross on the day. 1st Birdie went to Shawn Berg who also took Long Drive and so was joined by our Nearest the Pin Winner, Andy Vincent, for the photo.

Just pipped for the Monthly Medal despite an excellent 64 was Andrew Shaw who had to be content with Low Net C Grade where he was joined by Albert Arcenas and Amol Singhal (on count-back from Marcelo de Jesus) for the Low Net awards.

Our Monthly Medalist for June was Matthew Powell who shot an incredible 74 gross to record 47 points on the day; a record equaling return for the Monthly Medal!

Congratulations to all our winners and the detailed results are here: Form_ Current Results 190519

Tee Set Match Play

In the last quarter-final game in the Kunning Bracket, after a great match Keith Gorman edged Matthias Coessens 1up on the 19th hole to complete the semi-final line up. None of the current round of Emas bracket matches have been played so please arrange these matches as soon as possible so they are completed with the deadline of 30th June.

Next Up: Monthly Medal Cengkareng Sunday 19th May 2019

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2019. We are holding our Monthly Medal one week earlier than normal thanks to the Cengkareng management team for advising us that the greens will be cored next week and offering us the opportunity to play earlier in the month. The support is much appreciated thank you.

In addition to being the 5th Monthly Medal of the year, this week will also be the second round of Cycle X of the Tee Set Eclectic and so a good opportunity to lay down a marker (or improve your score) in seeking to wrest the Eclectic Trophy from our current Champion, Lorenzo Marengo. We’ve not had a 2-time winner yet so will this be the cycle when someone breaks the rhythm?

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp850,000 walking please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng management have purchased a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.

Tee Set Match-Play

We are now 3 weeks into the current round which will run until 30 June. Whilst it seems a long window, many will be taking some holidays  over the next few weeks so please be pro-active to make arrangements to get your matches played as soon as possible.

Details of who is playing who can be found on the Match Play page of the web-site

Rancamaya 25th – 26th May 2019: Only 9 Days to go!

This ever popular event is only 1 1/2 weeks away and so its a last call to plan for a great get-away week-end. A big thank you to Mark Johnson for taking the lead in coordinating the arrangements for both DOGS and Tee Set again. The full details are on the web-site menu page so please check it out here and contact Mark to make your hotel booking as soon as possible.

Please see the attached list of who Mark has registered as signed up so far. Please check your details and if you have not already done so please advise on any guests under your booking and for those staying Saturday night, please confirm numbers for the BBQ.

Jakarta Hotel Association Event 28th June 2019

One of the best golf days on the calendar will be held this year at Rancamaya on 28th June 2019. Please see the Classified page on our website to access more information and download the registration form if you are interested to join.

Survarna outing…. any interested players?

Survarna have published their Ramadan rates as attached and word is they wish to contact us about a Tee Set visit.

The reports on the course are very positive from a number of Tee Setters but the facilities remain a low priority on their investment planning so there is not really an area to host our post round event.

Likelihood is they will only have a deal for us during the week and so is anyone interested say the week of 27th May? Please send President Roger Finnie a whatsapp message if you are and we’ll see what they come up with.!

Sunday 12th May 2019 Permata Sentul

The Day

A quiet Sunday on the Jagorawi Toll saw 20 Tee Setters take advantage of the smooth traffic conditions to have a quick trip down to Permata Sentul for our only visit of the year  to take on its rolling and hilly layout.

The toll may have been relatively traffic free but that does not help the map reading skills of taxi drivers as 2 of our group were to discover; once they arrived we were to share their adventures as they ended up well off the tarmac somewhere in the back reaches of Sentul thus arriving a little later than planned. A good reminder to all that it is best to check where you are going and monitor the directions being taken if you are not using your usual driver.

Apart from the late arrivals, we had a relatively untroubled day as the course was quiet and despite some thunder, the rain stayed away until well after the round was completed. The heavily cored greens, whilst usual for this time of year, made putting a lottery but otherwise the course played well with the elevation changes providing a good test of how much extra club to take. The challenge of the layout reflected in only 3 of our group scoring net par or better on the day.

No newcomers but a big welcome back to Glen Menyennett after 31 weeks. Thank you to VP Ric Wymer for taking care of the registrations and scoring on the day. Photos of the day are here.

The Play

Our small group meant that almost everyone managed to get their name in the highlights sheet. A 3 way tie for Most Strokes of 10 by Matt Otto, Jari Antikainen and Indar Dhaliwal and 2 skirts by James Ross and Mike Webb ensured the Treasurer could collect some fines as despite the greens condition, no Monster Putter was recorded on the day. With the Clubhouse being quiet, some of the staff decided to photo-b0mb our prize giving as can been seen in the pictures.

Our First Sandy was by Roger Finnie who was recognized for another prize whilst First Birdie went to James Ross ensuring he could recover his fine. Most Improved was Lorenzo Marengo whilst Low Putts was shared by Craig Binks and Geoff Thwaites but both were gone by the time of the presentation. Low Gross went to Simon Oxley.

Our Low Next prizes went to best net of the day Jeff Durham, a clearly not too rusty Glen Menyennett and to Roger Finnie.

Congratulations to all our winners and the detailed scoring can be found here.

Rancamaya 25th – 26th May 2019: Only 12 Days to go!

This ever popular event is less than 2 weeks away and so its a last call to plan for a great get-away week-end. A big thank you to Mark Johnson for taking the lead in coordinating the arrangements for both DOGS and Tee Set again. The full details are on the web-site menu page so please check it out here and contact Mark to make your hotel booking as soon as possible.

Details of who is playing who can be found on the Match Play page of the web-site.

Next Up: Permata Sentul 12th May 2019 12pm

Continuing the Bogor courses theme to Tee Set golf this month, Sunday sees us visit Permata Sentul Golf Club. This is another one of those courses which we visit infrequently but which is always an interesting golfing challenge with its rolling topography and 3 Par 3s in 4 holes to finish the front 9.  We are pleased to have it back on the schedule for the first time in 24 months as several members have been asking to include it again.

If you want to join us for a mere 750,000 Rp including cart and a tee off time of 12:00pm, please register here.

In memorandum…

Last week-end brought us the sad news of the passing of 2 members of the wider ex-pat golfing community, “Big” Rob Jagodzinski and Clive Bissell. Our commiserations go out to their families and friends.

Up coming events….

(1) A reminder for those wanting to join all the fun of the BWA Pink Golf Day in support of Breast Cancer awareness that the early bird registrations will open shortly.

(2) Before that, there is a Legends Golf event where you can again get to play and mingle with some of cricket’s former stars on the golf course. The event will be held next month, 14th June, and is looking for both players and sponsors as the organizers look to raise funds for an international standard pitch to be developed in Indonesia through renovations to the existing facilities.

Both are on our Classifieds page.

Sunday 5th May 2019 Bogor Raya

The Day

The beginning of our May 2019 Jagorawi Toll swing saw 34 Tee Setters head south for our first foray of the year into the Bogor area. The picturesque and well laid out Bogor Raya course is always a treat to play and the caddies and staff look after us to ensure we have a memorable day.

The speed of play was impacted by which tee was allocated as the starting hole with the front 9 starters getting round in just under 4 hours and missing the afternoon storms despite some early heavenly grumbles mid-way through their back 9. Unfortunately whilst most managed to finish up, those starting on hole 10 got held up by some other groups and so caught the storm as it broke whilst still on their final couple of holes.

One newcomer on the day and a warm Tee Set welcome was given to Adam Leigh-Smith.

Lots of welcome backs this week with our list headed by Nicki Stuart after 1 year, closely followed by Christine Lie after 50 weeks. Honorable mentions to Stefan Skibinski, Bill Bigelow and Sean Hill.

Photos of the day are here.

The Play

Our fines came in groups of 3 this week with Indah Dhaliwal being joined by Andrew Shaw and Harry Lopez for their Most Strokes of 10 on a hole and by Rudie Basson and Sean Hill for the Skirt photo. Indah was however saved from the trifecta by Matthias Coessens who had Monster Putter after 43 strokes on the greens. It got better for Indah as he was back up to claim First Par for Handicaps >=30 and recover his fine.

Also recovering his fine was Rudie Basson who had First Sandy whilst First Birdie went to Samret Raungrit.  Completing the skills awards was Low Putter, President Roger Finnie.

Most Improved was Joe Callahan whilst our Low Gross on the day went to Tim Knight. Completing the list of winners were our Low Net awardees of Simon Oxley, Craig Edwards and our best net on the day, Mike Webb.

Thank you to VP Ric Wymer and Secretary Beby for managing all the arrangements for the day. Congratulations to all the winners and the detailed scoring is here Bogor Raya Master 050519

Match Play

A quick reminder that if both players are present on any particular week, the Match Play rules do require that the match be played unless the Match Play convener has been informed and agrees to a postponement. Whilst our Secretary and Committee endeavor to pair you up, it is the players responsibility to arrange the match and inform the person doing the registrations if it has been missed. The rule is there to encourage timely completion of each round so please help us if you spot we have missed a match-up.
