Next Up: Sunday 5th May 12pm

A late change to the published schedule as we have been informed that Bogor Raya is over-booked next week and Permata Sentul has a competition this week: meaning we would only tee off at both courses at 1pm unless we changed plans. Not to lose out on the opportunity to play both these popular courses on a more agreeable timing, we have made some calls today and managed to achieve a simple solution by just swopping the weeks over. Many thanks to our Fixture Secretary Wina Nugraha for sorting out the arrangements with both courses at short notice.

Therefore, this week we start this special time of the year where the mix of Ramadan and what should be the dry season – written as it is pouring outside this evening : -(  ! enables us to schedule most of the Sundays down the Jagorawi Toll, as we hope to get better rates than normal, usually have less busy courses and less traffic & rain to slow us on the return trip.

This Sunday is our only scheduled visit of the year to one of the top courses in the area, Bogor Raya. Designed by internationally renowned Australian architect Graham Marsh on 72 hectares in a stunning natural setting, Bogor Raya is a real treat to play and visually one of the best courses we play on all year.

The price is Rp900,000 with carts and our tee time is 12.00pm but often we can get off a little earlier which would leave additional time afterwards to enjoy a relaxing time in the clubhouse; please try and arrive early just in case. If you wish to join us please register here.

Rancamaya weekend 25th – 26th May 2019: 3 weeks to go!

This ever popular event is 3 weeks away and so its time to plan for a great get-away week-end. A big thank you to Mark Johnson for taking the lead in coordinating the arrangements for both DOGS and Tee Set again. The full details are on the web-site menu page so please check it out here and contact Mark to make your hotel booking as soon as possible.

Please see the attached list of who Mark has registered as signed up so far. Please check your details and if you have not already done so please advise on any guests under your booking and for those staying Saturday night, please confirm numbers for the BBQ.

Sunday 28th April 2018 Cengkareng Monthly Medal

The Day

Although a few regulars were on the return trip back to Jakarta after Easter, we had an improved turnout with 34 Tee Setters joining us for the Monthly Medal at Cengkareng this week.

Heavy rain had interrupted Saturday’s round for some of our players and the clouds were very threatening prior to tee time ensuring some chatter of how many holes we may get in. However, we were to head out on time and after a few holes, to enjoy a bright, sunny and clear round. Most were finshed well before 5pm leaving plenty of time to enjoy the good hospitality and refreshments on offer in the clubhouse as the scoring was completed and prize giving announced.

One newcomer on the day, Byung Ho Park, pictured left above and who was given a warm Tee Set welcome. Amongst our welcome backs were Michael Seabrook (37 weeks) and Brett Shields (27 weeks) but the loudest cheer of the day was for Brenda Mayland who joined us the first time since the Championship and made sure the day went smoothly.

A pleasure to have Brenda join us this week and many thanks for taking care of arrangements. Pictures of the day can be found here.

The Play

An improved harvest of skirts this month with several of our winners also contributing to the fines; called up for the ubiquitous photo were VP Ric Wymer and his playing partners Michael Seabrook & Mike Riley as well as Eric Mary and Indah Dhaliwal. Congratulating himself on not getting a skirt but up Monster Putter was Tan Chee Hwa.

Most Strokes went to Jari Antikainen after 12 on a hole whilst back to recover their fines were Indah Dhaliwal for First Sandy and Ric Wymer for Low Putts.

Also back up was Michael Seabrook who claimed First Par for Handicaps >=30 whilst Graham Parsonage claimed First Birdie and James Ross Most Improved.

Low Gross was Tim Knight after a 77 off the stick whilst our Monthly Medal skill prizes went for Long Driver to Santi Miller and Lorenzo Marengo and for NTP to Fernando Gaggino. Pipped at the post for the Monthly Medal after all being tied on net 68’s and 40 stableford points, Lorenzo Marengo, Eric Mary and Aurelie Neufkens had to be content with Low Net for A, B and C grades, respectively.

Our Monthly Medal honours went to President Roger Finnie after his low round of the day of 76 gross to return 41 points and get his name on the shield for the first time.

Congratulations to all our winners and details of the scoring can be found here.

Match Play Championship

The first week of the 2nd knock-out round saw 3 matches played. Simon Oxley and Santi Miller both overcame their opponents, Mike Webb and John Birch, respectively, 3 & 2 and will face off in the next round. Our 3rd match saw Matthew Powell and Fernando Gaggino finish all square after 18 with Matthew prevailing down the 19th hole to win 1up.

For the remaining matches, please be conscious that the holiday season means people are often away for a few weeks so it is recommended to try and get your matches completed early. Details of the opponents in each match are on the website here.

Next Up: Monthly Medal Eclectic X Cengkareng Sunday 28th April 2019

This Sunday we head back to one of Jakarta’s finest courses and one of Tee Set’s most popular venues, Cengkareng, home for Tee Set’s Monthly Medal for 2019.

In addition to being the 4th Monthly Medal of the year, this week will also be the second (or first if the cards from last month continue to remain elusive!) round of Cycle X of the Tee Set Eclectic and so a good opportunity to lay down a marker in seeking to wrest the Eclectic Trophy from our current Champion, Lorenzo Marengo. We’ve not had a 2-time winner yet so will this be the cycle when someone breaks the rhythm?

Whilst there is a lot to attract players for this week, we also welcome those who just wish to enjoy a pleasant trip across the rolling fairways, guided round by Cengkareng’s well trained caddies and then to sit and enjoy one of its famous Margaritas to cool you down afterwards.

If you are able to join us for a very reasonable Rp850,000 walking please sign up here. Tee time is 12pm as usual.

Reminder: For those who would prefer not to walk, in addition to the hover boards to glide across the rolling fairways, Cengkareng management have purchased a limited number of golf carts. If you wish to reserve one please contact the Golf reservations staff at Cengkareng directly. As the carts are limited in number and we do not have visibility to those already booked on the day, your Tee Set Committee is not involved to the reservation of the carts.

Tee Set Match-Play

Last Sunday was the end of the first knock-out round of the Match Play and the players for the next round of matches has now been determined. This round will run until 30 June so please make arrangements to get your matches played as soon as possible.

Details of who is playing who can be found on the Match Play page of the web-site.

Sunday 21st April 2019 Senayan National

The Day

Easter week-end, Bandung Bash, post-election holiday, school holidays…. a long list of events on this week-end which resulted in a rather select group of Tee Setters arriving on Easter Sunday at Senayan National to take on the challenges of this short but tricky lay-out in the heart of Jakarta. The challenges of the course were evident in the scoring with only 1 player being within 5 strokes of their handicap and the treasurer being almost able to recoup the prize money from the fines.

The course itself was quiet so we were able to head off a little earlier than scheduled and enjoyed an unhurried game under generally good conditions; albeit with a light sprinkling of rain take the heat of the afternoon making it a pleasant end to the round.

Scoring was quick with such a small group so VP Ric Wymer was able to make short work of it to be all finished by just after 5pm. Some chose to head to the new bar over-looking the 16th green (ed: something to consider for an evening of golf and wine perhaps) whilst most took the opportunity for an early trip home.

1 newcomer this week and a warm Tee Set welcome to Megat whilst our notable welcome backs were to Matthew Cherrett and Keith Miller after 35 and 21 weeks, respectively. Thank you to Ric for taking care of the administration for the day and photos of the day can be found here.

The Play

Although our overall putting was marginally improved from our last visit to Senayan, the fast and undulating greens got the better of many of us with Andy Vincent being top of the Monster Putter stats after his 43 stroke effort. Jari Antikainen was a 2 booby prize winner with Leon Bivolaru, Megat and Mike Riley joining him for the skirt photo and Graham Parsonage, James Ross and Matthew Cherrett sharing Most Strokes with after their respective 10 strokes on a hole.

Jari’s revenge was to win Most Improved after coming home 8 better than going out. Simon Oxley was our only Sandy and James Ross had our First Birdie on hole 8 to also recover his fine.

Dirk Kruip won Low Putts after his 32 stroke effort after Roger Finnie was awarded Low Gross. Our best net effort and the only player shooting handicap was Leon Bivolaru who was joined by Santi Miller and Mike Riley as our division winners on the day.

Congratulations to all our winners and detailed scoring can be found here.

Tee Set Match-Play

Sunday was the last week-end in the first knock-out round of the Match Play. In our one match played at Senayan, Santi Miller defeated Matthew Cherrett 5 & 4 to advance.

The next round of matches has now been determined and will run until 30 June so please make arrangements to get your matches played as soon as possible. Details of who is playing who can be found on the Match Play page of the web-site.

Next Up: Senayan National 21st April 2019

IMG_7579

Next up, and with Sunday being on a long holiday week-end, we make the very short trip to the excellent but tricky Senayan National golf course in the heart of Jakarta. Although shorter than the other courses we play, Senayan tests all the clubs in the bag and has the ability to catch out the unwary.

However the pleasant walk  and shorter course usually makes for a quicker round and with traffic lighter over the holiday week-end, we can all expect to be finished in good time to enjoy a longer beverage after the round and still get home early.

If you are not away celebrating Easter and are  interested to join us, please sign up here.

Cost is Rp750,000: this price is lower than last year and includes the buggy so for those who have previously put off walking and/or the high cost of the buggy, this is an excellent chance to join us.

Sunday 14th April 2019 Riverside

The Day

Sunday saw Tee Set head to Riverside long with the other Jakarta Inter-leagues teams for the 2nd round of this year’s competition and our regular Tee Set Sunday game. As usual, many of the regular Tee Setters were out in force but not all playing for Tee Set but nevertheless we had 28 players in our weekly prize pot.

VP Ric Wymer ably assisted by Matthew Powell did a good job of sorting out the starting holes and groups with the Team Captains and we were able to head out for our shot-gun start about on time at 11.30am. A couple of early starters were a little slow and therefore got swamped by our players as we headed to our respective holes but with the aid of the marshalls we were able to all slot in appropriately and proceeded to have a smooth round untroubled by the weather.

No newcomers today and modest welcome backs to Franz Heuken and Juju Juhairiah after 3 months.

Thank you to Ric, Matthew and Simon Oxley for assisting with the administration and announcements as the President needed to head out early.

The Play

Despite the long carries to the red tees, fully 1,200 yards on the card over 18 holes, we had a surprisingly modest return of skirts with Detlef Bluemke, playing partner Franz Heuken and Matthias Coessens all getting up for the dress up photo. Most Strokes was an out of form Michael Mueller with 10.

Matthias stayed up for the Monster Putter photo too being joined by Simon Reynolds who had 40 putts in an otherwise solid round of 84. First Sandy went to Mark Johnson and First Birdie to Jes Roestel for their efforts on hole 13 and 2, respectively.

Low Gross went to our regular winner Tim Knight after his 79 off the stick whilst our Low Net winners were Fernando Gaggino, Arnold Castillon and Franz Heuken, on a count-back from Detlef Bluemke.

In the JIL, Tee Set went down 6-4 to Sentul Swingers whilst 2018 Champions Tin Cups bounced back from the first round set-back to beat Cloggies 8-2 and Sandbaggers & Pocksia shared a 5-5 tie. This leaves the table very tight with 3 rounds to go and all to play for when we reconvene in June. Cloggies however could console themselves with the JIL skill prizes on the day winning both Long Drive (Roger) and NTP (Hans).

1 match-play result on the day with Simon Reynolds beating Marcelo de Jesus 3&2.

Detailed results are here and photos here.

Sunday 7th April 2019 Imperial

The Day

Sunday saw 32 Tee Setters head west again as we made a return visit to Imperial where we were greeted by glorious sunshine and a course looking in picturesque condition. Although there was quite a bit of maintenance work going on around the course, the fairways were in good condition and the greens presented some challenges especially if you got on the wrong side of the hole and left yourself a down-hill putt.

That we were a slightly smaller group of players turned out to be fortunate as later in the afternoon, the storms arrived and lightening closed the course with 2 or 3 groups having a couple of holes left to play. Nevertheless, we equitably scored the remaining holes and headed to the clubhouse where we enjoyed the excellent food and service whilst sharing stories over a few refreshments; the last group heading home well after 7.30pm.

5 newcomers this week with Michal Lukasik and Tuomas Kangasvieri joining our Hawaiian visitors Rod Mau (brother of Richard), Dalton Tanonaka and Wade Suzuki. Also back after 21 weeks was Chuck Jeffrey. We look forward to welcoming you all back soon.

Many thanks to Rudie Basson and VP Ric Wymer who managed all the scoring on the day.

The Play

Most strokes was a modest 10 but shared 3 ways with Arthur Mallari, Lorenzo Marengo and Mikko Heinonen whilst Monster Putter was taken by Jack Harkness after his 40 putts on the greens. Despite the best efforts of a wayward drive and tree rebound back to the edge of the red tees which almost gave the President his 2nd skirt, he remained fortunate much to the disappointment of his playing partners and so VP Ric Wymer was left to enjoy the dress up photo alone this week as our only skirt on the day. Most Improved went to Tim Knight whilst Indar Dhaliwal won First Par for Handicaps >= 30.

2 newcomers in the money with Rod Mau winning First Sandy Par on hole 5 and Tuomas Kangasvieri joining Simon Oxley for a first hole Birdie and winning that prize. Ensuring family harmony was Richard Mau taking home Low Gross for his 81 off the stick.

Low Putts on the day went to John Birch with 26 whilst our net winners were Fernando Gaggino, Keith Gorman and Werner Muchitsch.

Congratulations to all our winners and the detailed results are posted here.

Sunday 31st March 2019; Cengkareng

The Day

With the start of the school holidays resulting in several regulars being away, a modest turnout of 34 Tee Setters joined us at Cengkareng this week for our Monthly Medal and round 1 of Eclectic X.  Returning after 3 weeks away, the President was left wondering whether he was with the right group as there were more players out on the practice area, led by the VP of Almost Everything, than in the club-house enjoying a beer before the round – quite un-Tee Set! but equally encouraging to see everyone working on their games.

As usual we were treated to a great day out with the friendly and well trained caddies looking after us on the course and the team in the club house ensuring we were well fed and watered both before and after the round. The course was in good condition, recovering from the recent rains, and the weather stayed dry all day despite us needing to take a 20 minute break near the end of the round due to the lightening & thunderstorms which rolled overhead, thankfully without blessing us with any drops of rain.

2 new comers this week as we gave Suprachai Suesomboon and Peraphon a warm Tee Set welcome. In addition to enjoying their rounds, they joined our growing and regular whisky group which was in full swing quite late into the evening.

A warm welcome back to Divya Prakash Ahuja after 27 weeks. Pictures of the day are here and a big thank you to Craig Edwards & Matthew Powell for the pre-game coordination and to VP Ric Wymer & Dave Prosser for the post round scoring.

The Play

As usual at Cengkareng, we had both some excellent scores and a few fines to keep the Treasurer happy. On the latter, we invited Mark Johnson and Arthur Mallari to come and take their pick of the Tee Set dress up outfits for their Skirts whilst Albert Arcenas (42) and Matt Otto (12) were pictured with the accessories for Monster Putter and Most Strokes, respectively.

Albert was able to make a net return winning back his fine with his First Sandy Par on hole 4 whilst Samret Raungrit won First Birdie with his effort on hole 6. Most Improved went to Richie Tiblani after coming home 11 strokes better.

Low Gross went to Tim Knight after his 81 off the stick whilst our Monthly Medal skill prizes went to James Ross (NTP) and Lorenzo Marengo (Long Drive).

Our main winners in the net category, all with great scores, were Len Ogembo (68), James Ross (66) and Joe Callahan (68) whilst our Monthly Medalist for March was David Prosser after his best of the day 74 gross returned him an excellent 43 points to squeeze out James Ross by a stroke.

Congratulations to all our winners on the day and detailed results are here.

Tee Set Match-Play Championship

2 more matches played with Divya Prakash Ahuja defeating Matt Otto 4&3 whilst Matthew Powell edged Ric Wymer 3&1.

A reminder to everyone still to complete the first knock-out round that the matches should be completed by 21st April 2019 so there are just 3 Sundays left. Please visit the Match Play tab to find your opponent and make the arrangements to complete your match before the deadline.

Rancamaya weekend 25th – 26th May 2019

The ever popular week-end is only 8 weeks away and so its time to plan for a great get-away week-end. A big thank you to Mark Johnson for taking the lead in coordinating the arrangements for this event again and please read on as there is important information and instructions below. The details are also on the web-site menu page

Have you ever wondered what golf heaven might be like? … if so then come and join us for a weekend away at Tee Set’s beloved Rancamaya – and find out!

The outline program for the weekend, based at the “R Hotel”  is as follows:

Saturday May 25th, 2019

Check in for families from 11 am, grab an early lunch, just chill out, practice your short game or stretch it out on the range in case you need/want it.

After paying your green fees (will be about Rp700k including cart but tbc) and topping up your cool boxes, we should be ready to try to conquer the course with an unofficial tee off time of 12:30pm. Just form up into flights and get out there, nothing formal today as this is not an official Tee Set round, i.e. no skirts or Low Net and all that stuff, that’s tomorrow!

If you have not already done so, check in after playing at the hotel for the unencumbered (or do it before if you feel like it, as they may have rooms ready).

For those who felt they came out second best to the course the masseuses in the hotel will be ready to put you back into shape.

Those finding the mountain climate too cool can warm up in the sauna or Jacuzzi throughout their stay.

From 19:00 till late, there will a BBQ in, and in front of, the Club House for all registered  paid for by Tee Set funds (don’t worry, the distance from the club house to the hotel is no longer than a short par 3), during which we will fraternize with tomorrow’s competition, the D.O.G.S. You are greatly encouraged to bring a or a few bottles of wine, as well as any other beverages you might want to consume or share, but don’t forget to buy a beer or two from the club as well.

Sunday May 26th, 2019

Breakfast in the hotel restaurant (own account but included in room fee if booked with us below).  Check out of the hotel for those without families or accompanying partners.

Pay your green fees, etc. (tbc as above).

Tee Set registration in the Clubhouse from 10.00am approximately for those who came just for the Sunday game, although we expect only few such pilgrims because certainly nobody will want to miss out on a weekend like this unless they really have to.

With a likely tee off time of 11:30 based on prior year’s experience, be ready to get out on the course as soon as the Starter calls.

Play your round, including if you have been selected to play against the D.O.G.S. to help Tee Set retain the trophy, otherwise it is a normal Tee Set round.

After submission of all score cards, fines payment, prize giving and a few beers for the road it is off you go – just don’t forget to check your family out of the hotel if you brought them and are not staying over until the Monday as we expect a few to do – and take them back to Jakarta with you.

Rooms

There are a variety of room types on offer at the following special rates (inclusive of the 21% government tax & service charge) for any night of that weekend:

As some of the popular room types are in short supply, these fill up quickly – Deluxe rooms will be queen twin rooms only as the king bedded rooms are already full. To secure your desired room type and to make your booking, please email directly to Mark Johnson at markstevenjohnson56@gmail.com as soon as possible. Rooms will be allocated based on first come, first served and Mark will advise you to select another room type if your first choice is not available.

Please advise Mark how many & which nights of Friday/Saturday/Sunday you wish to stay and also whether:

(1) You are playing golf on Saturday

(2) You are joining the BBQ on Saturday night

(3) How many guests you will be bringing to the BBQ – all are welcome but we will charge non-Tee Set players a small fee for the BBQ

See you all at Rancamaya!!
